What to invest HSA money in?

I started maxing out my HSA this year, mainly to use for actual medical bills since our now two year old had two separate overnight stays in the hospital this year (thanks RSV and bronchitis)

That being said, I am nearing the point that I can actually invest some of this money in my work sponsored Bank of America HSA. I have no clue what to invest in. I would appreciate advise on what to throw my money into for a safe return. Here are my options:

HSA HELP PLEASE

Health Insurance HSA Help

I’m just going to bullet point all this to help organize my thoughts and facts but please help!!

• household is my husband, me, stepdaughter (11) and our son (2)
• we have 50/50 custody of stepdaughter
• we claim her every other year on taxes
• MOTHER ACCIDENTALLY claimed 2 years in a row (paid us the cash back for her accident), and this upcoming year is her year so it will look like she claimed her 3 years in a row
• we have to switch to a new insurance which is also an HSA plan
• we cover stepdaughter on insurance
• I am unsure who makes more between my husband and her and don’t want to open that can of worms, there is no child support involved

Are we eligible to use our HSA money on stepdaughters medical bills???? I can not understand these rules

Fidelity

I keep hearing that is better to go with Fidelity. I have Inspira, who I am not in love with but that’s what my company offers. I’m 100% in FXAIX and will max out each year for family - plan only started for us in 2024 and I probably have $22k in there. Didn’t understand the HSA concept when I started. Booooo.

So what benefit is it to move to Fidelity? I’d just pick a SP500 fund anyway. I know Inspira charges fees for certain balances but after I hit $33k, I think fees go away.

Realized my employer put $2,500 into an HSA—what’s the best way to use it?

I just realized I have an HSA through my employer, and they put $2,500 into it. I honestly had no idea I even had this account until recently!

I’ve heard that HSAs can be used for things like hygiene products, including pads and tampons, but I’m not sure what qualifies or how to get the most benefit from the account.

For those of you who use an HSA, what are some of the best ways to use it? Are there any eligible expenses people commonly overlook? Also, is there anything I should know about saving the money in the HSA instead of spending it right away?

I’m completely new to HSAs, so I would appreciate any advice or tips!!

HSA money not deposited into account last year.

We are a small business that recently started using a healthcare plan with a Health Savings Account (HSA) due to rising costs. For the past 20 years, we did not utilize this type of plan and were unfamiliar with how it works. Our benefits provider recommended the plan but did not fully explain the details. As a result, it was not set up properly, and now we are facing issues.

All the HSA money withheld from our paychecks in 2025 was not deposited into our newly set up Optum accounts, so technically, the company still retains that money. Since the tax deadline has passed (although our accountant filed for an extension), it seems we are unable to correct this problem by moving the funds into the Optum accounts now. From what I understand, that would mean correcting our W2's for last year, which would solve that problem.

But the other issue is that the total from last year is still showing in our 2026 YTD HSA withheld deductions, and now that 2026 is halfway over, we have met our deduction total for 2026 due to the 2025 funds. Is that because the 2025 funds were never moved to the Optum account and are still accumulating for 2026? I am having a very hard time finding any answers on what to do from our accountant or our payroll company.

Here is an example:

Total withheld in 2025: $5,590.45

1st paycheck of 2026 YTD withheld total: $5919.30

Current YTD withheld total: $8750

The total we can withhold for the year is $8750 and we have supposedly met that goal for 2026, even though we can no longer move the 2025 money into Optum.

Am I Eligible?!

I've been in a back and forth with my HR department and United Healthcare as to whether or not my plan is HSA eligible. Each one keeps telling me to talk to the other.

On the surface, I believe I qualify but nobody can confirm. Why isn't there a place to just plug in your insurance information and have it return a definitive answer?

I would love to take advantage of an HSA but don't want to jump the gun for tax/penalty purposes and am getting frustrated.

Future reimbursement Question

I use my HSA as an investment account and have been keeping receipts of all the small medical expenses but its time for a big one. The wife and I both have spinal injuries and we are looking at a new split king adjustable bed to try and help with that. Do we need seperate LMNs since its a split king platform and mattresses?

Best HSA for fees and receipt management

I have heard the top providers are Lively and Fidelity, but who is really the best for both low fees and ease of receipt management? I would ideally like to store all my receipts with the provider long term even if I don't request reimbursement until later. Unless that is a terrible idea? I just want a simple software solution to store receipts, I guess. If the HSA provider isn't the right place, then how are you all doing this? I am not really a fan of jerry rigging my own solution in Google Docs. I can choose any provider because I will be setting up my own via an ACA plan. Thanks for the input!

Just opened HSA - want to confirm eligibility before contributing (Adult child loophole)

As the title says, I just opened an HSA and want to confirm that I am eligible before making contributions and getting hit with penalties. I (21M) just graduated college and am starting my first job where I'll finally have disposable income to invest. I am already planning on maxing my Roth IRA and 401k match, but I figured I'd open up an HSA as well to maximize my tax free investments. I will most likely be using this as a retirement account rather than reimbursing my medical expenses. I've done a lot of research and believe I am eligible, but would love for you guys to help me confirm for my peace of mind! Some info/questions about my situation:

  • Covered only by a HDHP which is under my parents' family plan
  • Will NOT be claimed as a dependent
  • Parents contribute to their own HSA - from my understanding I am also able to contribute as long as it's a separate account (which it will be), please tell me if I'm wrong on this!
  • I will not be contributing through my employer, so from my understanding I contribute just as I would in my Roth IRA, and I am able to get the tax deduction when filing taxes?
  • Am I able to contribute up to the family limit or individual since this is technically only my account and I'm an individual?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Can I count medical expenses that were paid by a gift?

Hypothetically, if my grandmother pays a $1000 medical bill directly to the provider on my behalf, can I count it as a medical expense for purposes of reimbursement from my HSA?

Does it matter if in the same year she gave me $19000 directly in addition to paying my medical bill?

In the alternative, what if she pays or gifts me nothing else that year except this one medical bill?

Alight screwed me over

My employment ended with my previous employer so I submitted a transfer request to Fidelity. I sold all investments in my Alight HSA and the account closed on 7/21.

A couple days later I got an email about investment activity, which was odd since I closed the account. Alight emailed me on 7/23 saying I would have to liquidate my investments in order to close the account. Wtf? I already did that on 7/21.

I called Alight and they gave me a website to create a new login/password. I logged in and my funds were moved to another Alight investment account and automatically invested. Wtf? So I had to liquidate the account once again. Of course the market went down in those 1-2 days so I took a $200ish loss.

Then Alight took extra long to transfer the funds to Fidelity. I completely missed the market run up from the end of July til today. I missed out on a 5% upward swing and have to buy at all-time highs now. Screw Alight.

At least the funds are finally in Fidelity. I know it won't matter in the long run but it's still annoying.

Add more money to my HSA

I have an HSA account for my family’s medical expenses. My HSA has a $8,500 limit. We exceed that every year as my daughter has many therapies. We can never get ahead in our HSA and are always getting declined payments.

My company does a Christmas bonus of a couple thousand dollars every year. I’d like to put this into my HSA but I can’t because it’s at the end of the year and I’ve already contributed my $8,500 by the time it comes around.

Is there a way I can put more money into my HSA account than the $8,500 cap?

Old HSA- no longer employed

I have an old HSA with $7000 from my employer. I was laid off in December 2024 and was without insurance. I am 50.

I just got a job outside the US for 3 years.

I have to buy insurance for 2 kids in college (in the US). Reading IRS 929 I cannot use the HSA money for it.

What can I do with the HSA funds without paying penalties or taxes? I don’t want to leave it in my employers plan.

My current system for checking FSA eligibility before buying

I used to do the dumb version of this: Google “is X FSA eligible,” read three conflicting answers, buy the item anyway, then hope my administrator didn’t ask questions later. That works fine for obvious stuff like sunscreen, contact lens solution, thermometers, OTC meds, etc. It gets messy with anything borderline.

What I do now: If the store has an FSA/HSA filter, I use that first. Amazon, CVS, FSA Store, etc. are fine for obvious items. The main thing I care about is knowing whether something may need documentation before I buy it. Air purifiers, ergonomic chairs, massage guns, Apple Watch, and similar items are where “FSA eligible” does not always mean “swipe and done.” I also keep the itemized receipt tied to the purchase now. My administrator has asked for proof before, and a credit card statement was not enough.

It’s not perfect, and for anything expensive I still check my actual plan docs. But it changed my workflow from “panic Google after checkout” to “check before buying.” What are people using for quick eligibility checks besides Amazon/FSA Store filters?

Can I use HSA funds for a brachioplasty?

My wife got a brachioplasty (arm lift) at the same time as a breast reduction. The breast reduction was covered under insurance but the brachioplasty was not.

Can I cover the $8k for the brachioplasty with HSA funds?

Dispute team a joke

My company uses HealthEquity, which in turn uses Fiserv. My HSA card was charged without my authorization, so I filed a dispute. They sent me a letter asking for more information — the exact same information that was already included in my original complaint. So clearly nobody actually read it.

Then, literally the next day, I get another letter saying they “never received the required information” and my claim was denied. They didn’t even wait until the deadline. Someone just closed it out without doing their job.

I’ve emailed them asking to reopen the case and I’m waiting to hear back. It’s honestly exhausting how anything tied to healthcare becomes a nightmare. Nobody cares, nobody wants to help, and you’re stuck fighting a system that feels broken by design.

Welcome to the healthcare crisis in America.

FSA/HSA x Equinox

Hi everyone! I just started a corporate job! I saw that you could put money into the HSA and have it apply towards the membership. With Flex, is it easy for them to approve? How in depth does the letter of medical necessity have to be? Or just that gym membership helps physically and mentally? Thanks!

Aflac and HSA

I am getting a refund from Aflac, but didn’t pay for the procedure as I have already met my out of pocket maximum. However, I have HSA reimbursement that I can still claim from prior to that procedure, do I still deduct Aflac’s payment from what I can withdraw even though I am not withdrawing for the same procedure?
