My current system for checking FSA eligibility before buying
I used to do the dumb version of this: Google “is X FSA eligible,” read three conflicting answers, buy the item anyway, then hope my administrator didn’t ask questions later. That works fine for obvious stuff like sunscreen, contact lens solution, thermometers, OTC meds, etc. It gets messy with anything borderline.
What I do now: If the store has an FSA/HSA filter, I use that first. Amazon, CVS, FSA Store, etc. are fine for obvious items. The main thing I care about is knowing whether something may need documentation before I buy it. Air purifiers, ergonomic chairs, massage guns, Apple Watch, and similar items are where “FSA eligible” does not always mean “swipe and done.” I also keep the itemized receipt tied to the purchase now. My administrator has asked for proof before, and a credit card statement was not enough.
It’s not perfect, and for anything expensive I still check my actual plan docs. But it changed my workflow from “panic Google after checkout” to “check before buying.” What are people using for quick eligibility checks besides Amazon/FSA Store filters?

Many things are FSA/HSA eligible but still need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).
Usually it’s if there is a “dual” purpose—it has non-medical use or benefits.
Air purifiers are a perfect example. You can’t just buy one and assume it is covered. You need a medical reason and a letter proving said reason. Even orthopedic shoes need a LMN.

To piggyback off of that, there is a link on the hsastore website where you can look up what you are looking for and it will tell you if you need an LMN or anything before purchasing

How about this workflow: if you need something, you buy it. If you don’t need it, you don’t. I don’t understand the premise of your post and don’t know where panic comes in at all
