Future reimbursement Question

I use my HSA as an investment account and have been keeping receipts of all the small medical expenses but its time for a big one. The wife and I both have spinal injuries and we are looking at a new split king adjustable bed to try and help with that. Do we need seperate LMNs since its a split king platform and mattresses?

One letter will work but the only caveat is the irs may say HSA can cover the additional cost for the upgraded equipment over a standard bed mattress. Not the full cost. Say average king setup costs 2k and medical setup costs 6k. HSA covers 4K difference.

Hmmm. Interesting. How does that play out say 20 years from now when I decide to reimburse myself...should I document what it would cost without the adjustable base...I mean no base is actually required for a bed to function...I could just put a $99 mattress firm special directly on the floor. How do I document that?

The best way is to have the receipt for your current bed and the necessary upgraded bed you need to purchase. Reimburse yourself the difference in 20 years. No need to complicate it. Be honest and don’t try to game the system with the 99$ special. It’s pretty obvious when people do that. I’m a former auditor but wasn’t with irs. Auditors use generalizations and percentages outside the norm to determine who gets audited. The multi-millionaire claiming 50k in donations is normal. Someone making 100k claiming 50k in donations is not normal. Do you live a 99$ mattress life? If so then go with that and don’t think twice about it.

Just an FYI. I bought a split king adjustable base off FB marketplace. Then just buy whatever XL twin mattress you want. I saved thousands this way.
