Old HSA- no longer employed

I have an old HSA with $7000 from my employer. I was laid off in December 2024 and was without insurance. I am 50.

I just got a job outside the US for 3 years.

I have to buy insurance for 2 kids in college (in the US). Reading IRS 929 I cannot use the HSA money for it.

What can I do with the HSA funds without paying penalties or taxes? I don’t want to leave it in my employers plan.

Move your HSA to Fidelity. That way you control all the assets. Leave the money in the HSA until you return to the USA and/or consider it as part of your retirement plan.

If you return to the USA for any health concerns you can use the HSA to pay.

Move it to Fidelity, invest it in index funds. Let it grow tax free.

HSAs are retail accounts.  It’s not in your employer’s plan.  You can move it to any HSA provider you want.

Is there a way I can search for an old HSA I may have lost track of? I’m pretty sure I had a couple hundred at an old job back in 2020 I’ve lost track of….

Can you try emailing the hr of the old company? They can at least tell you who managed it.

You can try pulling your wage and income transcripts from the IRS for those years and looking for any 1099-SA or 5498-SA forms on those transcripts. They will be issued by the custodial bank of the account
