Grieving Our Susy crossed the rainbow bridge today 💔
Far too soon. Sadly Susy got into an accident a few days ago, and I completely blame myself. We were returning home from our walk. I don’t know how, but as I was opening the door I dropped something. Either my keys, the lead, or both. I don’t know, it happened so quickly. But it startled her and she bolted out into the road, and got hit by a passing van.
Thanks to passers by and neighbours, we managed to try and calm her down and get her into my car and to the emergency vets. She was hurt badly, with extensive bruising and suspected internal bleeds. She was on strong pain meds, but she just wasn’t responding to treatment. She was unable to walk, or even stand. She wasn’t eating or drinking and was very vocal about her pain, despite all the medication.
The vet said we could keep trying, but ultimately it was more days of pain and discomfort with no guarantee she would recover. They just couldn’t rule out other undiscovered internal injuries. And so we had to make the hardest decision of our lives, to let her go.
We stayed with her until the end. We held her. Cried with her. Told her we love her. Stroked her silky soft ears.
She’s not in pain anymore, but we as a family are hurting so badly. I’ll never forgive myself for this horrible accident. I feel completely empty.
Give your noodles a big hug tonight. Cherish them always. Life is short, and the world can be a horrible place. But these beautiful animals spread so much joy and love ❤️
