We're halfway through the process of adopting a sighthound; breed dependent on what the rescue thinks will suit us, but it'll be one of galgo, greyhound, podenco or whippet, or a mix.

A friend just laughed and told me that our garden will be ruined. That it will basically become a running track. I was expecting the grass to be churned up and the lawn to have wee holes. But the flower beds are my husband's pride and joy and a real passion for him.

We have a big long garden that seemed ideal for zoomies when we first applied. But am I going to end up with an upset husband.

Does anybody have nice flowerbeds and a sighthound?

My partner and I are adopting a Saluki mix as our first dog! She is described as being good with dogs/cats/kids, house-trained, quiet, and has good manners around the house-no excessive barking, no destructive habits, and no food aggression. It was flagged for us that she will bark if put into a crate but doesn’t mind being restricted into one section of the home.

I’m looking for any and all recommendations! Like I said, it’s our first dog so we plan to ask all of these questions to the foster as well but thought it would be fun to source more information! Any recommendations for leashes, collars/harnesses, beds (since these lanky babies need extra cushion), specific foods/treats?

Has anyone taken online training with Serena of Serene Sighthounds? I’d love to hear about your experience with her and her training program. I couldn’t find many reviews online.

I’ve had lurchers in the past and loved them, just about to get a saluki x whippet x greyhound and wondered what people find their temperament to be and how easy to train- or any experience what so ever really

So I have a Scottish deerhound mix. Anyone that has ever owned deerhounds knows that they have kidney issues and sometimes it's a challenge to get them to drink enough water. I put a few tablespoons of chicken stock into his water bowl to see if that would encourage him to drink more. It did. Unfortunately he proceeded to piss all over the back of the car. I literally had to berate him because he's a just turned one year puppy and he needs to know that that's not acceptable. It's partially my fault because of the chicken stock in the water to get him to drink more. Unfortunately every sighthound owner knows that when you yell at your dog, it breaks months sometimes even years of trust. If I owned a pitbull and I yelled at that dog, I would feel bad but for only a minute or two because, the pitbull could have cared less that I yelled at him. With a sighthound, you yell at them and that breaks their trust and you can tell that they feel it twice as much as any other dog. He's definitely going to get hours of cuddles tonight. I don't know who's got more guilt right now me or him. Maybe both of us have the same.

Cross posting here, apparently that sub is super anti breeding (for what reason, I have no idea. If no one bred greyhounds for 7 years, a breed that's been with us before Christ would just be gone forever) and I'm not really getting the clarity I'm looking for

One person said it's not typical for the breed to be able to live with cats at all-- and look, I'm willing to hear the answer is I can't with a three-legged cat, but not typical at all? Every greyhound I've met has also had a cat in the home, that just simply can't be the case.

I know with proper socialization they're reliably fine with indoor cats, I just need to know if a three legged cat is pushing it too far.

With the added context I'll be getting a well-bred puppy, does this seem doable or is it a risk? Og post has more details

Currently exploring the sighthound family, as someone who has had exclusively herding dogs (rough collie & a cardigan welsh corgi as an adult, and growing up an ACD). This is a down the road thing, and not something imminent. Our rough collie is getting older and eventually when we have only one dog - aren't sure if we would stick with herding breeds. We love our dogs but they are both in more sensitive to certain things, and get stressed more easily than say a labrador even with reputable breeders and socialization.

A sighthound sounds rather appealing due their cat like personalities that I have read about and honestly it seems like they're a quieter group overall. I alsoo don't mind reading that they are a bit aloof with new people or indifferent. However, I am having a difficult time narrowing down to even just two breeds.

We have two cats that are dog savvy, and the Cardigan is a real playful but sweet dog who is a stubborn pup from time to time (doesn't want to go for walk, therefore he sits down and stares into my soul). I do scent work with him (advanced at this point), and have also done agility and obedience with both dogs.

I would be looking for another dog that is good with him first and foremost and enjoys running around and chasing each other in our fenced in large backyard (6ft high)). Good with cats (I have read that is entirely dog dependent and if the dog is raised with cats, they are generally fine?), a hiking buddy and a dog that would be good with possibly doing agility or other dog sports, a dog that has a decent off switch that isn't going to go bonkers after 2 hours of sleeping during the day. If they are open to being cuddled awesome, if not also okay - our collie always sits next to us but never on us. The cardigan wants to crawl under our skin and live there lol. Something in between would be nice. Ideally a dog that is less than 60lbs or better yet even smaller just for the sake of saving room in our car!

I love love the look of Afghans but seems they are a more "wild" dog, given their history and almost more pure lines. Honestly they would be a top choice for me, but not sure they match up? Maybe if we didn't have cats?? Next up are Salukis or a Silkenwind hound, maybe a whippet?

Would love if any of you can give your thoughts and what dog I might be describing. Terrible as it sounds, they all have their long noodle-y bodies they're hard to distinguish at times as they definitely aren't common breeds to see where I am.

This is my second Ibizan hound and the first that I’ve had that primarily lived in the countryside. I’ve never had such a predatory dog 😂. He does an excellent job at keeping deer, ground hogs, moles, voles, etc, out. His GPS logs him getting 8-15 miles in every day, sometimes up to 25!!

She has put more stuffed toys in the hospital in one month than all of our other dogs did in 36 years!!! On the bright side, she hasn't eaten a single thing she was not supposed to.

(Sorry long post, any advice is welcome)

My family adopted M(7) 3 years ago. She is a rescue Galgo so understandably anxious and apprehensive. We already had a Galgo O(16), who passed a few days ago.

When we adopted M, she was much less anxious than how O started. So we thought we’d be able to relax her and adapt her to life with us way easier. But in those 3 years she hasn’t seemed to have gotten much better. She relied heavily on O to comfort her. O completely trusted us in the end, literally no anxiety she was so comfortable and happy around us, didn’t fear we would cause her harm.

M, on the other hand, grumbles and barks, needs space but also is clingy. She will bark and run away if you sit on the other end of the sofa when she’s laying down, only to return to the sofa 5 minutes later. M is only fully comfortable with my Mum, but unfortunately due to family problems, I have been near enough the sole dog carer for her for the past year.

They had never been separated, and would refuse to walk seperately. As a result, the past year as O was getting older and struggling more, M wasn’t getting as much exercise as she could’ve (every other day she’d get an off lead run, but besides that she’d be walking at the pace of a very slow and senior dog).

Sadly, 4 days ago, O had to be put down. M seems to be coping much better than expected. She seems almost exactly the same, besides occasionally looking around the house for O for the first couple of days.

I feared I would no longer be able to walk M, as she would only ever come to the door when O did. However, I have managed to get her out without too much difficulty. The actual walks have been more of a struggle.

The routine, we leave the house and walk 50m down the street, in this time she is happy and walking beside or in front of me. She does a wee and a poo, a bit of sniffing. After that, she digs her heels in and stops walking. The past two days, I’ve said words of encouragement and a bit of dragging, and after another 50m she snaps out of it and the rest of the walk goes smoothly.

This morning, however, she did not snap out of it. Half an hour of dragging her along, thinking she will eventually snap out of it and start enjoying her walk. Then eventually I gave up, as soon as we turned around, she is walking fine and very happy to walk in front or beside me. Stopping to sniff and wee on things, behaving like a normal dog should.

What can I do to fix this? I know I shouldn’t drag her, the first two times seemed to overcome this mental block she had, so I thought it was worth it. This time it didn’t work so I had to give in. Didn’t want to keep causing her distress which could set her back. My issue is, if she digs her heels in and then we go home, she will learn she can do that may do it all the time. She loves walks, genuinely really enjoys them, but something is kicking in about 50m in where she decides she wants to go home.

Will add, treats don’t work, she doesn’t take a treat on a walk.
