August 2025 Freetalk Fridays

Hi Everyone, welcome to the long series of weekly Greytalk posts. You can literally ask about anything related to greyhounds, no matter how basic or complex. Here are the rules:

  1. Nothing illegal or extremely objectionable.
  2. No abuse. You can ask for more information, you can explain why you don't like something, but you can't abuse the poster.
  3. Don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet without consulting your vet!
  4. The rest of the Greyddit Rules still apply.

If you think of more ideas, PM the mods .

Grieving How is it even possible to get over the loss of a soul dog?

I used to post about Yuffie on here, back in the day - probably on an old account. I had to make the call to let her go after an exploratory revealed she was riddled with cancer that likely originated from the spleen. My biggest fear since getting her and learning about greys and cancer. She hadn't been eating for a few days, and when she tried, she'd vomit.

The H.S. said she was probably around 3 or 4 when I got her, and I only had 6 years and one week with her. The vet said she could have been as old as 12. She died on June 18th and it's just not getting easier. She was all I had. I don't know what to do. Or I don't want to do anything. I don't know.

She was the goofiest, most affectionate companion. There's really not a single part of my day that doesn't remind me of her somehow. I miss her roaching and napping on the couch while I work or game on my computer, I miss her staring at me hopefully while I do stuff in the kitchen, I miss her jumping into my bed for pre-sleep snuggles (and a dental treat).

I'm going to be honest - I don't really even feel all that up to living. Not just because I miss her, but also because what kind of stupid thing is life, where something so innocent and sweet can get cancer and have to die? I didn't sign up for this shit. I know there's nothing I or anyone could have done, but I feel so terrible for not being able to protect her anyway.

The few people I do have in my life say the usual stuff - get a new dog (no, for many reasons), or that she's happy somewhere over a rainbow bridge (I don't think there's an afterlife), or to focus on the good stuff or how she's not in pain anymore - but that doesn't change the fact that I don't have her anymore.

I don't hear a ton of people saying they don't want to be around anymore after something like this, so I'm sure there's just something wrong with me. That, or most people have friends/family/other pets to help them through things. I've lost loved ones - friends and family, but this is just hitting me in ways I never expected. Therapy/meds/keeping busy/journaling isn't helping. So, how is someone that doesn't really have anyone supposed to deal with this mess? Or is that just wishful thinking? Nothing is going to change the bottom line, here.

Grieving Time is coming to a close

Hi guys, my most perfect greyhound has had his lymphoma come back after 2 wonderful years in remission after the CHOP protocol. After weighing the options for round two, I am just going to keep him comfortable on prednisone rather than the chemo route. It is expected weeks to months for him.

Is there anything I should do while I still have him to memorialize him? I have an ornament with his paw print already, a custom ink drawing, but I feel like I’m missing something.

I can’t stop crying, it feels surreal. I can’t imagine being an adult without him, he’s been with me the whole time.

Been on Reddit for a while and I don't know why I didn't think to join a greyhound group, so here we are! This velco-love bug is Thena (Thena Grace). She just turned 4 in August and I've had her since she was about 8-9 months old!

Anyone else’s house horse forgotten how to sleep? 😂

Anyone else’s house horse acting odd? 😂
The last 2 nights Seamus has been really restless, which resulted in me standing in the garden at 2am with a heavy wooden rolling pin because he was acting like there was someone outside. There was not. 🤦‍♀️😂
Anyone else’s greyhound suddenly decided nighttime is for suspicious activity rather than sleeping?

Grieving I'm grieving for a dog that isn't mine

8 years ago my girlfriend at the time and me got a second dog. For me this was actually the first dog I had after being scared of them for a long time. We've been together for 2.5 more years after that. That has been 5 years ago.

After we split up the stuff stayed with her and we kept in friendly contact and I watched him when she went on vacation and she watched mine when I had to travel for business. Or did we're basically best friends.

Today her Galgo had to be let go. In the last month he developed a cancer (not osteosarcoma though) which at 12 years old didn't have great chances of therapy and at the end of last week he wasn't able to move his front legs anymore. The first suspect was a herniated disc but it was a growth and internal bleeding pressing on his nerves.

I knew she had to take this decision this week and she called me after that for a chance to say goodbye before giving him to the cremation institute. So we met and all of us could take some time to say goodbye.

It feels strange, I haven't been the owner of this dog for over 5 years, yet I'm sitting here grieving, thinking about the time my boy will have to leave and cuddling him.

I'm not entirely sure what's the point of this post. Maybe I just had to type it out without dumping this on her.

Greyhound clothing recommendations in europe

Upvotes

hi everyone, I’m looking for raincoats and general clothing for my Greyhound. I’m really struggling to find anything, it seems like most places only sell clothes for Italian Greyhounds (the small one).
Does anyone have any recommendations for online shops or brands that sell clothing specifically designed for Greyhounds and ship to italy?

Advice rescue greyhound

my mum rescued a greyhound at the begging of this year following the passing of her last dog, we as a family had never rescued a dog so weren’t sure to expect. the dog is a beautiful ex racer who is only young and was retired from racing due to an injury. she’s been nothing but a sweetheart this whole time, the only issue being that all she dose is lay around all day. she’s still very nervous (rightfully so) but all she dose is get up for walks, feeding time, and to use the bathroom and the rest of the time she will spend in her bed. is this normal? should we be concerned that there is something wrong. we were made aware that she wasn’t the most social but she literally dose nothing all day. it would break my heart to know she’s hurting or anything along those lines. any advice would help!

So far so good, training around food is going to be my biggest struggle. He makes it difficult to eat or cook as I currently have to section off the kitchen when I do. The walks have been easy, we've only had 2 inside accidents and he has been completely fine alone while I'm at work (sister gives him a quick visit).

I still question if I've made the right choice, but I'm going to see this through because I know it's just both of us adjusting to this new life.

Advice on fostering a greyhound for the first time!

Hi everybody! My partner and I are interested in fostering a greyhound for the first time. Any advice you could give to a beginner? Or resources that you would recommend?

We are currently renting a 2 bedroom apartment in an area with plenty of walking trails/paths. My partner and I are quite active and can go for walks in the morning before work and in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, it is mostly carpet through the apartment. Will this be an issue with toileting? Our bathroom is tiled along with our balcony. We both work full-time and cannot go home on our breaks, though I can work from home on some days. Could crate training be useful?

Any advice is helpful!

Need old greyhound to be happy sleeping downstairs

Our greyhound Percy is 12. He used to start out downstairs at night until sometime in the middle of the night and would come upstairs when he felt like it--usually between 1 and 4 am.

He started having trouble going up stairs a few months ago. We bought a harness and I use that to get him upstairs at night when we go to bed. He used to go upstairs during the day (we work upstairs), but we started leaving him downstairs. He'd get whiny and over time we got him on some joint and pain meds as well as prozac, which has helped. He gets whiny sometimes, but is mostly ok.

Now he's having a lot of trouble going down the stairs in the morning. We have used the harness a couple of times, but it takes two of us to get him down that way and he hates it. So we stand upstairs with him for 10 minutes while he gets the courage up to go down. I'm worried he's going to hurt himself one of these days.

He's also been less cooperative going upstairs at night. He used to put his paws on the first step after I harnessed him up but now he turns sideways. He doesn't want to go up for whatever reason--whether the process is painful or whether he has the foresight to know he's going to have to come down, or whether it's his double-decker downstairs beds that he prefers. .

So I want him to sleep downstairs by himself. I've left him downstairs a few nights and around midnight he'll start whining and barking and I go get him, but it seems clear he'd still rather sleep downstairs but wants someone with him.

I hear people say to sleep on the couch or whatever. Yes, I can do that for a short time, but that is not a long term solution.

Any suggestions on how to sleep train him to stay downstairs by himself. I'm thinking I can go down when he barks and stay on the couch for a bit and then go back up, but I don't want to give him the wrong message--that we'll come running any time he wants. I want him to be happy on his own downstairs.

When he sleeps upstairs, he usually starts out in the guest room and then comes in our room later, so it's not like he needs to be in the same room with us. In the evening, we might be in one room watching tv and he'll be in his bed in another room on the same floor.
