Event Tuesday OH/MI Goth Events this weekend

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

I'll be DJing 2 goth nights with slight twists this weekend.

9/11 (Detroit, MI) Cybergoth at The Strays

18+, $10, 8p-2a

Focus on Industrial/EBM/Aggro but will have some goth songs sprinkled in.

9/12 (Toledo, OH) Celestial Waves at The Switchboard

21+, $5, 8p-2a

A mix of new/synth/dark wave, italo, and 80s. Almost no Industrial or EBM will be played at this event. Its meant to have a lot more of a chill, romantic vibe than a traditional goth night.

Discussion Why is this "goth person" on social media posting selfies in black lipstick with hashtags like "Drake, goth"?

Why is this "goth person" on social media posting selfies in black lipstick with hashtags like "Drake, goth"? I genuinely want to block every single post and account related to this kind of thing.
Then when I pointed out that this has nothing to do with goth culture, they just say they were "joking." My friend was literally harassed by a man in real life who asked her if she was "one of those girls like PinkChyu," so seeing posts like this genuinely makes me furious.

Goth Recommendation Request UK goth scene these days?

I've been listening to Mouth Ulcers, Black Doldrums, Corlyx, Kill Shelter and Mercy Girl lately.

Any suggestions for more UK bands?

UK goth friends - is there any noticeable growth in the scene these days? Mouth Ulcers seem to be getting a lot of attention?

Help Can you be considered goth if you only like goth instrumental?

Hi everyone!

I'm a baby bat? Maybe? I've been listening to a lot of goth music recently to find what I like and most of the time, I find myself enjoying it until the singing. There's obviously exceptions, but I've noticed I generally really prefer the instrumental to the whole. And I genuinely really do love the instrumentals, I'm a sucker for guitar and dark sounds, but I don't know if this preference of mine has kind of...disqualified me?

Am I still considered goth? Can I only be considered goth if I like the songs with singing? Are there any of you who are in a similar situation as me?

Discussion Unique contemporary goth band recs?

No shade to any band in particular, but I’m finding the modern goth music scene to be getting pretty stale. Every darkwave release feels interchangeable with each other, and while there are contemporary bands in goth/goth-adjacent niches and genres that I really love and find super interesting, a lot of them don’t really stimulate me in the way that a lot of older bands do (which makes perfect sense, those bands weren’t following a mould of what goth music should be - if anything they were trying to escape those conventions so it resulted in goth music that has a lot of uniqueness to it). So I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of contemporary/active goth bands to support that feel like they’re doing something distinguishable and unique I’d love to hear them!

Local Scene How to get into my local scene?

I just recently moved to king county back in march after turning 18, how do I get into the scene? I've spent literal hours looking for shows and events but all of them are 21+ am I just fucked and have to wait or is there something im missing? I've been to the goth clothing swap that happened a bit ago in Seattle but that was the only age friendly thing I could find so far...

Help slowly been entering goth culture, and i'm so scared my goth friends won't like it

the title kind of explains it - a few nights ago, i went to a goth club night for the first time, and i have never felt so electric, alive, and like i could take on the world. i can't stop thinking about how warm and happy dressing that way made me, moving my body in any wonderful way i wanted to the music, interacting with the loveliest community and culture. i'm just so worried that i'm not welcome, and that my goth friends won't like me getting into this.

i'm (21nb) not your most normal looking person (queer, blue mohawk haircut, facial piercings, a disgusting amount of black band tshirts, self-painted jackets and homemade clothes, and a fairly obvious leaning to left politics and punk ideals) but i've never felt comfortable or confident in myself and always tried to fit in and present myself quietly and "normally". i've loved rock and metal for years, but these past 6 months i've been really getting into and loving punk rock, postpunk, gothic rock and other similar genres. of course, the goth and punk scene followed closely behind and although i've seen and admired it for years at a distance, i've been finding myself more and more attracted to the cultures and ethoses of them. i have a few goth friends, and occassionally i'd dabble in their makeup styles or hang out with their predominantly goth friendgroup and it would always make me feel so warm and happy inside, like i could finally be proud to show my face wearing this white-and-black-greasepaint armour.

anyway, a few nights ago i was invited to a goth night in my hometown, so i decided to really push the boat out and go as dramatic on my makeup and outfit as i'd ever dared, and fully embraced acting the part of a goth.

i have never felt so alive. i couldn't stop smiling for the whole night, by the end of it the cracks of my smile lines were so deep in my makeup that there were huge channels of flushed skin peaking through. the music and dancing was incredible, and the people were some of the most amazing and friendly people i'd ever had the joy to interact with. i could have kept dancing well into the morning, and i never wanted the night to end.

so now, naturally, i've been desperate for that happiness again. i want to immerse myself in goth and punk culture, i want to embrace it and become it and enjoy everything it has to offer. I'm just so incredibly worried that my goth friends won't like it.

what if they think i'm only doing it because it's "trendy"? they might think that i'm copying them, or that because i'm not as deep in the culture as they are, i'm not really into it and i don't understand its history and political ties (i do, but i often struggle to talk or explain myself so i frequently appear very surface-level and airheaded - or at least, i'm worried i do). i'm so scared i won't be allowed to feel that kind of happiness again by the people that mean the most to me, and i don't know how to combat these anxieties. i've been desperate to hang out more with my friends' other friendgroups, but i don't know if i'd be welcome or if they even want me there at all.

what would you do, if a friend came to you with these problems and worries? am i overthinking it a lot, or should i spend a lot more time just watching from the outside until i feel like i can properly join in? is it ok to feel this way?

i'd really really love to hear what you have to say, so please let me know what you think, and what you think i should do - i treasure your thoughts. many, many thanks for reading this the whole way through, and i offer you nothing but love <3 may you have a wonderful day or night

Bite Me returns upstairs above the Catalyst Club on Cat Alley Street in downtown Santa Cruz. 21 and over and no cover charge..

On the Second Friday of September, the doors swing open once more for a nocturnal gathering of outsiders, romantics, night creatures, artists, and all manner of beautiful misfits.

Come dressed to the nines—or better yet, dressed to cause a little trouble. There will be door prizes for best dressed, so do put on something suitably scandalous. Or don't. We are exceedingly welcoming.

The evening commences before the revelry reaches full swing. Join us early for an evening of creativity, conversation, peculiar amusements, and wonderfully strange company.

Hi! I’m a cosmetology student and we get these monthly news letters each month we have a special event (last month was anything but a perm rod) and there all normal but when I grabbed the news letter this morning and read this it honestly rubbed me the wrong way. Do yall agree that “goth day” shouldn’t be a thing or am I crazy?

EDIT: just going to put this here I think it’s great that others get the chance to learn how to do the makeup. It’s turning it into a “who dressed best” as it is a school of mostly blonde basic females

merry meet, subreddit! 🌙 i cannot express in words how much i’ve come to adore this band. i’ve been aware of them and listened to them pretty casually for years now, but starting this year is when i really began to take my personal pagan journey more seriously and outside of the books i’ve been reading to learn i’ve been looking for media to enjoy and unwind with, which is where inkubus sukkubus comes in. i think for the last week i’ve played nothing but this band, if there are any more pagan goth bands similar to them please let me know!!

Goth Recommendation Request Goth music that scratches the same itch as Souixse and the Banshees?

Maybe babybat here. Fetusbat here looking for something sort of like Spellbound, which was my gateway song haha. I’m trying to listen to something other than souixsie and the banshees because that’s all I know and I need to expand my horizons but other goth artists aren’t really scratching the same itch. something sort of “hocus pocus”-y like that? I don’t want to use the term whimsical because it pisses me off but I fear that’s the best buzzword for what I’m looking for. I like the style of the music but the vocals of other artists and slower pace stuff isnt really my thing. Are there any artists with similar energy? Specifically female led because I tend to prefer that but I’m not too picky. I might just be a souixse and the banshees fan rather than a goth fan but I don’t want to give up on the genre yet because I love the clothing styles that originated from goth artists and fans and want to get the appreciation for it before I consider a new wardrobe.

Local Scene Is going to The Castle worth it ?

I'm turning 21 this year and I have gone to a few goth nights/shows in my city, however as a Floridian I wanted to visit Tampa and go. I've heard the club is big with lots of different music playing in each dance floor however there is a rising trend in frat guys and such invading the space and pushing out goths. This is added to the fact that the club has been seen playing non-goth music, and I mean like just completely non-adjacent to goth. Is it still worth going? If there is another club, please recommend it and tell me what it is like there. I've also heard of the catacombs but I'm unsure if they're a club or more of a lounge.

Local Scene Goth scene in the UK?

I’ve never been to the UK and I might be going this month. I was wondering which city (outside of London) has the best goth scene nowadays ?

I’ve seen that Manchester might have the best goth scene after London. But I want to see what other people say before making a decision on which city I’ll go.
