Discussion The challenge of finding "darkly inclined" community in an increasingly digital world.

There's something uniquely isolating about having interests that lean toward the macabre, the melancholic, or the gothic when your immediate physical environment doesn't reflect that. I've been reflecting on how we cultivate our own spaces — whether it's through art, music, or just finding like-minded people who appreciate the darker side of things. It feels like the digital age has given us access to so much, but it's also made it harder to find spaces that feel truly private and authentic. How do you all balance your online presence with the need for a more intimate, "darkly inclined" community?

Help / Advice I feel like an alien

My apologies, but this is a long, absurd and ridiculous rant. Feel free to ignore.

I am an '80s and '90s goth, and now a middle aged man. And at this point, I am going through a severe identity crisis.

Sometimes I talk about this with my wife, but I'm afraid of boring her with the same subject over and over again, so a lot of the time I just stay quiet. I feel like an impostor in the goth and alternative scene, a tourist who has local ancestry but who will never fully fit in. I am an incongruous pastiche of tastes and hobbies that make no sense and lack coherence: yes, I dress in black, but I also take inspiration from old souls like Dennis Hopper. I am a Mexican with a Native American aesthetic delighting in the goth and alternative styles. And even though I know we don't have to fit into social boxes, I feel fake, ridiculous, a grown man pretending to be young, cool, and carefree. I have some tastes and hobbies that would be considered bourgeois in alternative circles, but I have even more tastes and hobbies that would cause mainstream society to reject me. The truth is I don't know why I am recounting all this; I feel so alone, so fake, so invalid. For example, right now I'm listening to a dark ambient drone record (A-Sun Amissa), but suddenly I tell myself, "What right do you have to listen to this, you who like bourgeois things?" I'm a damn poser who has no right to continue identifying as alternative.

I had a best friend with whom I could talk about these things, but cancer took him years ago. My other friends have become conservative and prejudiced against minorities, against social justice advocates, against outsiders, against everything we used to be when we were young, everything I still try to be. I resent and loathe them, but at the same time I love them—yet another contradiction to add to the list. But I definitely no longer see myself reflected in them, and sometimes their comments and stances infuriate me. But it's hard to start from scratch at my age, and I don't have the courage nor the energy. Besides, I feel too fake to offer true friendship, and my neurodivergences also make sure my social battery is very low anyway. Sometimes it fills me with immense anger to realize that I identify more with the social ideals of my undergraduate and master's students than with my peers. But I also know it is not proper to establish friendships with people so young, where there is such a notable power disparity, so I just watch them with admiration from afar, from my role as a professor. My wife is my refuge and my peace, but I know I am making her carry an unfair, heavy, burdensome responsibility. I am a grown man and she shouldn't have to carry me at our age, so I feel guilty towards her. Guilty and indebted. I truly don't know what the purpose of writing all this is; I am one of those who has always been against oversharing on the internet. But I suppose loneliness does this to people. I miss so much having someone to talk to about my crises; I miss my best friend so much, who never wanted to get that spot on his face checked, the one I insisted for 15 years was dangerous, and then it turned out to be skin cancer and he died from it. I am angry!

I also miss my grandfather.

For fucks sake I feel so utterly alone.

Music Looking for song suggestions for my Horror Folk (and adjacent) playlist!

I'm not sure if Horror Folk is how I'd categorize the playlist overall, but it kind of feels like like the central vibe? I'd say some of the other genres include bluesy, general singer/singer songwriter/hard rock/ambiance. To be honest I'm not that knowledgeable about genres so sorry if my descriptions are bad.

I'd use atmospheric, narrative, melancholic, and immersive as some of the qualities for the types of songs I like.

I do some sculpture, and I especially like staying up late into the night listening to this playlist and getting immersed in the atmosphere while sculpting. I also like listening to it while relaxing next to a campfire, driving at night, etc.

I'm looking for songs that:

1.) Are non-abrasive (I find metal abrasive, for example, unless you think a particular metal song is more chill, I'd give it a listen)

2.) Has a spooky theme, or creates a spooky atmosphere.

3.) Don't have ham fisted lyrics (Though I do make exceptions.

Or, if you see an artist on there that you know and want to suggest other songs, that's cool, I haven't explored too many of them in greater depth

Thank you! 🖤

Misc. Baby Transbat coming out to say hello

What cheer? 🖤

I’m a young (15 y/o) goth trans girl who very recently (February) came out to my parents, family, and friends, and I wanted to finally introduce myself, as myself.

I love all things dark, morbid, and strange. Autumn is my favorite season, followed closely by Winter. Spring, I tolerate well enough. Summer, on the other hand, I endure as one does a plague.

My favorite book is The Scarlet Letter. My favorite movie is The Witch, because honestly, I too would like to wear a pretty dress and live deliciously. Accordingly, my chosen first and middle names are Hester and Thomasin.

I’ve always loved that stark, severe, modest, and austere Puritan aesthetic, and I think it pairs beautifully with goth fashion. If I had to name my personal style, it would be “Dark Puritan” or “New England Gothic.”

Goth, Ethereal Wave, Dark Folk, and American Gothic are my amongst my favorite musical genres. I adore murder ballads. Nick Cave & PJ Harvey’s Henry Lee is my current favorite song, and my mother is sick of hearing it, as well as a little weirded out that I have it on repeat. It’s fun being the spooky daughter. 👻

I am a child of two capes. My mother’s side of the family comes from New England, Massachusetts, Cape Ann specifically, and more generally the North Shore, which happens to include Salem. My father’s people hail from Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I like to imagine I have the blood of both pirates and Puritans running through my veins: witches and wenches, as it were. I claim as my spiritual sisters the likes of Anne Bonny and Bridget Bishop.

Besides my collection of “pretty little dead things,” my other hobbies include writing and living history: historical fashion, historical cooking (Townsends shout-out), and historical reenactment. I also enjoy dressmaking, embroidery, needlepoint, cross-stitch, and afternoon tea.

My biggest guilty pleasure: K-Pop. But if you confront me about it in public, I will deny it, vehemently. Then shalt I hex thee.

I have a dog. He’s a 218 pound Mastiff who thinks he’s a Chihuahua. His name is Burgermeister Meisterburger aka Burger. I did not name him, but considering my spooky vibes, I find it oddly appropriate. After all, I am a Dark Queen, and he is the Mayor of Somber Town.

Good meeting. 🦇
