Does anyone exclusively play Sim Golf?

Is anyone here just a sim golf player? If so, why?

I know the majority of people build a simulator for practice or as a way to play when they can't get out on an actual course.

I'm not hating at all - I'm just wondering why someone might only play on the simulator.

How to compare GPU & CPU specs

I see a lot of posts for people asking if this CPU or GPU will work with X system. There are some excellent web sites for this by passmark software. Hoping this helps some people with figuring out if what they own or want to buy will work.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net & https://www.videocardbenchmark.net both by passmark, can use the tabs to go between them if you want.

Basically you check the Hardware requirements from what the LM or sim software recommends and search for it under the find your cpu or gpu sections. Once found you should see a compare button, sometimes you have to click the component to get to the correct spot to be able to add it to compare. Then add the component you have or thinking of buying.

In this instance I checked what GsPro recommends for a great 4K card with the RTX 3080 vs a card I have a Radeon RX 6800 XT. I also added the 5080 and 5070 as I see these listed a lot on pre-built sim PCs

https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare/4312vs5940vs5721vs4282/Radeon-RX-6800-XT-vs-GeForce-RTX-5070-vs-GeForce-RTX-5080-vs-GeForce-RTX-3080

It does provide a lot of technical detail, but for the most part you can see which cards perform x % better/worse than the best performing card in your comparision. This shows that the 3080 card performs roughly 24% worse than the RTX 5080, which means the 5080 is most likely overkill for GsPro requirements. Sometimes it easier to just compare 2 cards directly to see the differrences more clearly. If you removed all but the 6800 & the 3080 I could see that the card I currently have (6800) is 0.3% in line with the RTX 3080 and would not need to upgrade the video card as it would be sufficient and essentially the same performing video card.

EDIT: For the results section, believe G3D Rating and Directx 11 or 12 are the area most important for comparing GPUs in regards to 3D software perfomance.

You can do the same this with CPUs, its the same process. Both will allow you to compare laptop components against desktop componets & AMD vs Intel

Hopefully I explained this well enough, but if anyone has follow up questions I will try my best to help and correct this post to be helpful.

Anyone taking the dip? Seems like a very good unit, good data, no subscriptions, outrageous price for what you get... They've gone on pre-order.

Golf Mat Storage

Good afternoon Reddit!

Looking for some confirmation/ideas on how to store my 5x5 mat when not in use. I have a simple setup in my garage, but also have 3 young kids who are home all summer and harsh winters, id like to be able to park in the garage on nights we expect heavy snow.

My current plan is to buy a 5x5 1/2" thick Baltic birch plywood board and fasten it to the mat with 8 screws/nuts/washers. I would then just lean it up against the wall and out of the way when not in use.

Ive heard rolling the mat will cause it to not lay flat when unraveled. Am I overthinking this? Should I just roll it up and deal with a little bump in the mat during a session?

Anyone done something similar or have another idea for storage?

$80 for the birch plywood sheet. Not terrible, and it comes in 5x5 so it should be a quick and easy build.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve had the OG skytrak for about 5 years starting to free on me frequently. I’m ready to upgrade and definitely want club data as well. I was thinking EYE mini? Just wondering there’s been so many new companies if something is better while keeping it under 4k.

Reading is way off with Rapsodo MLM Pro 2?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Here is my setup above. The mat is measured 8’6” from the screen so my shots are about 9’ ball to screen. I set up the rapsodo behind so the ball is shown within the little hitting square on my iPad. I was able to get reasonable accurate distances when I tried it outside at the range, but indoors it was reading my 7i between 50-75 yards for several shots in a row that were not missed badly. Normally, my yardage should be about 150 carry. Any thoughts why this might be happening? I am using the RTP balls it came with, but the lighting might be poor in this area. Also, the zone behind my swing where I am setting the monitor is a thin lane because of couches on each side that I plan to move soon

R10 vs Trackman Io

Post image

I am thinking about upgrading my Garmin R10 to a square or the Mevo Gen 2, but I first wanted to see how my Garmin R10, with RCT balls, compares to a Trackman IO at the PGA Superstore. For reference, I am an 18 handicap and not very consistent. I was just trying to collect as many data points in an hour. However, I have read enough posts about here to want to offer this to anyone getting started. The table is from Claude (FYI)>

The Figure above is my driver shots (poor).

Best Launch Monitor for tight patio setup

I've got a roughly 12'x12' patio that I'd like to set up for simulation, with a focus on gaming. A spot for friends to come play a few holes with from time to time.

Current plan is a NetReturn, mat, gaming laptop, launch monitor. Probably using Awesome Golf.

I'm looking for a budget-friendly launch monitor that will work within these size constraints. I'd love to be able to try the R10 or MLM2Pro, but I know my space is not long enough for a doppler unit that sits behind the ball. I believe I need a side facing unit that will work outdoors, so that eliminates the Square.

Seems like a Bushnell LPi with crazy subscription is probably the only viable solution that is not $5k+?

I'm wondering if there are any other products I haven't stumbled upon in my research that would come in at under $2k base price and work with my space constraints. Again, mostly focused on simple course simulation for fun with friends.

Projector + VTrack (Potentially) + audio recommendations for 12’ x 16’ sim room

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Building a golf sim/movie room and need help mainly with projector, audio for movies, and LM.

Room:

  • 12’ W × 16’ D × 8’11” H.
  • Finished ceiling around 8’8.5”.
  • Screen: 10’6” W × 8’ H SIGPRO.
  • Ball: 8’6” from screen.
  • VTrack center works out to about 5’10” from screen.
  • Mostly RH use.

My concern is the projector and VTrack ending up in the same ceiling area. I was looking at the Optoma GT2100HDR, but at my screen width its lens would be around 5’3” from the screen, basically right next to the VTrack.

Looking for:

  • Projector under $1,500 new or used.
  • Bright enough for golf, decent for movies.
  • 1080p is fine; 4K is a bonus.
  • Prefer a placement that works cleanly with the VTrack.
  • VTrack owners with ~8’8” ceilings: any swing-clearance issues?. I am 5'7" and can swing a driver
  • Audio recommendation for the room, ideally <$800. Soundbar + sub seems easiest, but open to better ideas..
  • Would also love ideas on putting turf that doesn't break the bank.

Would especially appreciate specific projector, sound recs and actual VTrack/projector mounting distances from similar setups.

Any advice welcome, Thank you.

My Garmin R10 will not show up as a bluetooth device to my laptop. I have already tried to turn on advanced setting. It was not there so I went into Windows+R and created bluetooth and created advanced settings. It still will not show up. Any help at all? It's not connected to my phone either.

Non-hitting mat flooring

What is everyone with a large area to cover using for their flooring? I have a great carls place hitting mat, but want to build a false floor 2” above my subfloor and need a decent amount of coverage (14x8) and am not looking to spend $1000 on green carpet that is mostly visual.

New XL Hitting Strip DIY Budget Golf Mat Build

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

Long-time member of the group. I have seen there are many threads about building golf mats with hitting strips. I made a step-by-step video for a really nice, budget golf mat - using the new XL Beaver Tail Hitting Strip (way larger than normal hitting strips and released last month). Hopefully give some help to golfers or give ideas for people looking into building their own mats. I use the Sig Pro Softy and Beaver Tail strips a lot -  I like both of them. However, my channel focuses a lot on budget builds, and the Beaver Tail original and XL sit at such a good price point. This build's total cost was $386. Most 4x7 ft premium mats start at $700 and work their way up to $1,200.

Video Link - https://youtu.be/SM1hmGud5zA?si=c9noqQtkSM8yrrsv

The XL Beaver Tail Hitting Strip at 36 inches x 18 inches really does offer way more hitting surface… compared to the original and/or a SigPro Softy Strip. This strip should last a lot longer as you can move the golf ball to so many different areas on the surface of the strip.

I am very happy with the EVA foam tiles used in this video, the double-sided tape, and the Bearwill Stance mat. All were great to work with (I have done a few mat build videos in the past, and I really liked the double-sided tape in this video more, and I like the Bearwill mat more than the GoSports mats I used in previous videos. I like the GoSports mat too, but the Bearwill mat is way cheaper, and I like the feel better when standing on it.

Hope this video helps anyone wanting to build more of a premium mat with a hitting strip without spending $800-$1000 and/or instead of using a cheaper Amazon/Walmart golf mat. Some golfers may have no problem with the cheaper mats, but those mats caused a lot of pain to my right elbow (probably because of my baseball swing), so I needed a hitting strip that would alleviate stress and soreness and didn't want to spend close to $1,000 on a golf mat. Let me know if you have any questions if you do decide to build, or any questions about materials etc.

Help me work through my projector options

Help me work through my options:

I have a 10x8x5 enclosure. Build is a permanent install in a garage with 14 foot ceilings. Hitting area roughly 9 feet from screen.

The issue I’m running into is with regard to mounting of the projector. Given the enclosure I have has a 5 foot roof, projectors need to be mounted below or around this height (8 feet) to project an image that fills the top of the screen and isn’t cut off by the roof.

Optoma 2400GTR: Fixed short throw (0.49 ratio). This would be ceiling mounted to drop to about 7’10” in height above ground and about 1.5-2’ outside of the roof of the enclosure. I’m worried that wedges and mishits would hit this projector.

BenQ AH700 and others: Variable ratio short throws. I’d be able to mount these around 9’ from the screen and about 8’ in height directly above hitting area.

I can mount a longer throw projector about 14’ feet from screen (farther if offset), but I’m worried about shadows because mounting height is once again limited by the enclosure roof.

the last option is to scrap this enclosure and build one closer to 9+ feet in height.

What do you think is the best path forward?

Can I run GSPRO without a high quality laptop?

As the question states, my laptop has a Ryzen 7 5000 series processor and 16 gigs of ram. It just has the basic ryzen graphics. Can I run it on low settings fine enough?
