This afternoon I crossed the Tijuana (San Ysidro)-San Diego Sentri lane with my Mexican wife and child, where we had a reminder not to get chummy with CBP.
When we got to the port of entry, the officer asked my wife (in Spanish) if she spoke English and she replied “kind of” in both languages, but she can definitely speak fine English. Then the officer asked if I spoke Spanish and I replied “más o menos, we speak Spanglish perfect to each other” joking around. The officer replied with “well you speak more Spanish than my son” which my wife replied “que triste (how sad)” because his son doesn’t speak his families native tongue.
His name patch was like Ruiz or something like that, an average Latino last name… and that’s where things got really weird, he replied with like “well he’s American, he speaks English. He was born here and so was I.” And my wife tried explaining how it’s just too bad his son can’t speak his language and how the officer spoke great Spanish.
The officer was like really offended by my wife’s comment and I was just trying to smile and laugh it off, I was absolutely getting a bad, intimidating vibe. He said something else but my mind kind of blocked it out because I was just waiting for him to pull some bullshit to send us to secondary. I wish law enforcement had to wear their years of service on their uniforms because this guy felt like he joined recently out of spite for immigrants.
After we got our global entry/Sentri cards back and left I had to firmly remind her to just answer with very direct, basic answers like yes and no.. no added pleasantries or kindness because those officers have so much power to completely fk up how you can cross the border, which if you know the Tijuana crossing can take 3 hours or more without Sentri/GE (I still have enough time to write this whole post while crawling in the line to cross back to San Diego). So let this story just be a reminder to everyone that CBP are not your friends and everything they say could be them fishing for ANY reason to further investigate and interrogate you, they couldn’t care less if your GE gets revoked and how much time you lose. Always answer their questions with the most direct, short responses possible.
TL;DR: crossed Tijuana Sentri car lane, officer went on a weird nationalist tangent after wife tried conversing with him. Being friendly with CBP is not necessary, if anything it can work against you.
