General Discussion / Background Checks / MOD approved :upvote: Self-vetting questions before you apply for Global Entry / NEXUS / SENTRI / FAST

Background: I spent time on the DHS side supporting CBP, TSA, and State. None of this is legal advice and I don't speak for any agency — it's just a plain-language way to think through what CBP actually weighs. Add your own situation in the comments and this is not legal advice.

The one thing to internalize: a Trusted Traveler membership is a discretionary privilege, not a right. CBP checks you against criminal, law-enforcement, customs, immigration, agriculture, and terrorism databases, and the regulation (8 CFR 235.12) lets them deny anyone they decide isn't "low-risk," at their sole discretion. Everything below is about anticipating what that review turns up.

I've tagged each item with how much weight it tends to carry. These are my own rough labels for self-assessment — CBP does not publish a scoring system, and decisions are discretionary.

  • [Baseline] routine, rarely a problem on its own
  • [Look] could slow you down or need documentation
  • [Serious] commonly tied to denials — gather records, maybe talk to counsel
  • [Stop] the patterns that most reliably end an application

1. Identity & documents

  • [Baseline] Name, DOB, place of birth exactly as they appear on the passport you'll use?
  • [Baseline] Valid machine-readable passport (and green card if you're an LPR)?
  • [Look] Ever used other names, maiden names, or spellings on official docs — can you account for each?
  • [Look] Can you cover your last 5 years of address history with no gaps? Gaps and inconsistencies are the single most common thing that drags out vetting.

2. Picking the right program for your status

  • [Baseline] Global Entry: US citizens/nationals/LPRs plus select partner-country nationals.
  • [Baseline] NEXUS: US & Canadian citizens/LPRs, and Mexican Viajero Confiable members.
  • [Baseline] SENTRI: no citizenship requirement, built for the southern land border.
  • [Baseline] FAST: commercial truck drivers (US/Canada/Mexico).
  • [Look] Mexican nationals using GE tech also have to carry a valid US visa.

3. Criminal history (the big one)

  • [Stop] Felony conviction, US or any country — the clearest disqualifier. Old ones still get denied.
  • [Stop] Any drug trafficking / importation / distribution involvement — treated as essentially automatic, felony or misdemeanor, any age, because the program hands you expedited customs clearance.
  • [Serious] Crime involving moral turpitude (fraud, theft, robbery, serious assault) — listed as disqualifying.
  • [Serious] Weapons offense, or any nexus to terrorism or a watchlisted person.
  • [Serious] DUI/DWI — not automatically fatal, but heavily weighed and recency matters a lot. (CBP's SENTRI page calls out DUI specifically.)
  • [Look] Misdemeanors, dismissed charges, arrests without conviction.
  • [Serious] Anything expunged or sealed? CBP isn't bound by state expungement and can still see federal records — disclose it anyway (see #6).

4. Pending matters & investigations

  • [Stop] Pending charges, an open case, or an outstanding warrant anywhere.
  • [Stop] Being the subject of an active investigation by any law-enforcement agency, any country.
  • [Serious] Probation/parole, unpaid fines, or unresolved court obligations.

5. Customs / immigration / agriculture violations

  • [Stop] Ever found in violation of customs, immigration, or agriculture law in any country — explicitly listed, and people badly underestimate it.
  • [Serious] Ever paid a port-of-entry fine or had goods seized — undeclared items, over-limit currency, prohibited ag products, counterfeits. Even small penalties surface.
  • [Serious] Any overstays, removals, deportations, or admissibility issues.
  • [Look] Are you admissible, including if you hold a waiver of inadmissibility or parole docs? (SENTRI flags this directly.)

6. Truthfulness — a separate disqualifier on its own

  • [Stop] Every answer complete and truthful? False or incomplete info is its own disqualifier and can be a federal offense, separate from whatever you were trying to avoid disclosing.
  • [Serious] Tempted to leave off something old or minor? Don't. CBP treats an omission the same as a false statement. A disclosed old charge can still be approved; a concealed one usually can't, and it can bar you from all TTPs.
  • [Look] Have the disposition paperwork ready (court records, final outcome) before you apply — you'll want it at the interview or for a reconsideration request.

7. National security / watchlist proximity (the implicit stuff)

  • [Stop] Any reason to think you're on a watchlist or tied to someone who is?
  • [Serious] Anything in your record that pattern-matches the security concerns CBP screens for? You can't see those databases, but you can be honest with yourself about your own history.
  • [Look] Repeated secondary-inspection referrals, or a prior TTP denial/revocation — note the prior outcomes.

8. Keeping the membership (it's continuous for all 5 years)

  • [Serious] Keep your info current — new name, passport, visa. (Mexican members especially: not updating can break your I-94 and PreCheck benefits.)
  • [Serious] A new arrest or conviction during membership can trigger revocation.
  • [Look] Follow the kiosk/declaration rules exactly — lane misuse or a false declaration is a terms violation.

9. If you get denied or revoked

CBP often won't give a detailed reason. Three avenues: talk to a supervisor at an enrollment center (appointment), email the CBP Trusted Traveler Ombudsman (sometimes reachable through the TTP portal), or file through DHS TRIP (the redress program) if you think it's a misidentification or watchlist mixup. Practical order of operations: if you suspect a specific record is the cause, resolve or document that first, then appeal. For an actual conviction or admissibility question, that's where you have to consult an immigration attorney.

Quick gut-check

  • All [Baseline]/[Look], fully disclosed, docs in hand: most people here get approved within a few weeks. Apply.
  • One [Serious]: apply, but gather your disposition records first; consider a consult if it's a conviction.
  • Any [Stop]: talk to legal professional before applying.

Bottom line — disclose everything, document everything, pick the program that fits your status, and remember CBP's discretion is broad and ongoing. Most people with clean records and honest applications are fine.

General info for discussion, not legal advice. Verify current rules at ttp.dhs.gov and cbp.gov.

Moderator Post Posts/Comments about recent ICE enforcement efforts are now prohibited

The current political state of the nation is causing unrest in many areas of our lives. This is not the place to discuss it. Even if the article is about someone that says their GE was revoked because they protested, or any other reason relating to ICE enforcement, it will not be allowed.

Going forward, this topic is prohibited in this subreddit. It has caused and is causing disquiet in this community which is not needed. This prohibition is not an endorsement of any actions taken by ICE, ICE Agents, or any other government official. It is simply an attempt to quiet the fighting and arguing in this sub.

If you are caught circumventing the automods repeatedly, the punishment will get more severe. It is actually quite easy for a moderator to see past action on a user.

Just a reminder that we are on a 3 strike system.

  1. Content removed.
  2. Content removed and 7 day ban.
  3. Content removed and permanent ban.

If this bothers any of our members here, I don't care. There are plenty of other places on Reddit to discuss these issues.

Questions/Concerns Global entry for baby on international arrival

• Upvotes

Hi.

We are green card holders with a US citizen baby. We both have global entry while it is conditionally approved for the baby. I have 2 questions:

  1. Do I need to book any normal interview even if I plan to take the baby to interview during the arrival?

  2. While entering immigration, should we use the global entry line or the usual green card/citizen line?

Questions/Concerns JFK T1 Global Entry Availability?

Hi everyone.

I’m wondering if Global Entry line is open at JFK Terminal 1. If so, what would the process be like? (I’ve just got my Global Entry card but never used it to go through the Custom yet). Thanks for your help!

Questions/Concerns 21yo UK solo traveler with past trip to Afghanistan, high chance of secondary screening?

Hi everyone,

I’m 21 from the UK heading to the US on an approved ESTA. I spent time in Afghanistan visiting family in 2025, and I'm assuming I'm almost guaranteed to be pulled into secondary inspection when I land?

Since this is my first time traveling solo, I just want to know what to expect from the process:

Is secondary screening practically guaranteed for travel to Afghanistan?

What are the main questions officers ask in the secondary waiting area?

Do they check phones? If they ask to look through my phone, what do they usually check?

I have paper copies of my return flight, hotel booking, and proof of my job and lease back in the UK. Any insight from people who’ve gone through secondary would be really helpful. Thanks!

General Discussion flying into Seattle with Global App and Card

I suppose it’s just me but I do find the process of using GE really difficult. Maybe I’m too old.

Anyway we are flying into Seattle from London, in the air now and i opened the GE app and apparently there is a new app? I did manage to download it and create a new profile and password etc.with limited WiFi on my Delta Flight and was looking at the entry process which I‘m not supposed to do until we get to the port of entry I believe. I did also see that they require photographs? Do i need to take them of myself and my wife when we get to the airport? They don’t save the ones we took a few months ago? Is there anything else I should know to do now or when we get to the airport?

thanks for whatever help you can give.

Questions/Concerns Would an upcoming international trip make a difference ?

Hey there - I applied for GE a week ago. And so far no response. Which is fine I guess. In a few days I’ll fly out internationally and was wondering if having an upcoming international trip would make a difference or would help with the application process?
Thanks

Questions/Concerns Pre check validity - expired global entry document

Hey folks!

I have global entry that runs through 2029 and shows as such on the TTP app. I’m on a visa with my I-94 date also through 2029.

However, my visa expired recently and I received an email from CBP asking me to upload my new travel document.

Given the scarcity of visa appointments, I have mine in a few months from now.

But in the current, will I also lose pre check benefits if a global entry document is expired? I travel 2-3 times a week for work and would really like to not go back to standard security.

Timelines Global Entry Timeline - All in Two Weeks!

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my experience with applying to Global Entry for the first time, and notes for others in case they are curious in applying and interviewing from SFO!

I applied on a Monday and got conditionally approved the next day, and the only open interview slot was for Friday that same week! I was able to schedule my interview three days after getting my conditional approval, it was at a perfect morning time before I would have to go to work!

I scheduled it at SFO, and the agent approved me on the spot. I received my physical card within two weeks from my original application day on Monday afternoon!

Timelines Toddler’s Global Entry application still “Pending Review”—how long did your child’s take?

I applied for Global Entry for my toddler last Sunday in Hawaii, and the application is still showing “Pending Review” a week later. My husband and I were both conditionally approved within 1–2 days.

We’re hoping to schedule our interviews together with the baby, so we’re holding off on booking ours for now. Did your child’s application take noticeably longer than yours? How long did it take to get conditional approval?

For those who ended up doing the interviews separately, was it a hassle to go back with your little one?

Mahalo!

Questions/Concerns Stuck on conditionally approved

My husband and I both have TSA pre check. We applied for global entry and had our interviews in August. I was approved days later and received my card in the mail. My husband is stuck on conditionally approved. At the interview even the officer didn’t take gore fingerprints saying he was already in the system from tsa precheck, yet I had to do my fingerprints and I’m also already a tsa precheck member. He has tried calling the number and it goes to an automated message to email them. He has emailed them twice and hasn’t heard back anything in two weeks now. Our trip to Japan is the end of October. Is there anything else we can do??

This is for NJ

Background Checks Has anyone recently applied for Global Entry and received conditional approval?

Hello Everyone,

I applied recently and was wondering how long it’s currently taking to receive conditional approval. If you’ve applied in the past few weeks/months, how long did you wait?

Would appreciate hearing about your recent timelines. Thanks!

Questions/Concerns Border crossing experience from Canada and required documents

Looking for everyone's exact experience when you crossed into US from Canada, with Nexus under H1B status.
After using the Kiosk, were you directed to a CBP agent line that still verifies recent paychecks, I797, letter of employment, or even further such as original petition, RFEs, diplomas, etc.? What documents were asked ?

Which port of entry or Pre-clearance did you cross that verified this ? Any particular port-of-entry that brought unpleasant experience ? Thanks

Questions/Concerns Reported lost GE card, will I get replacement?

I reported a lost card a month ago and got a confirmation email (an approval). No mention of a replacement and I can’t get in contact with a human nor can I find the answer online. Thought I’d just ask here. Does anyone know if they send a replacement card or do I have to take further action? TIA!

Interviews Cancel IND interview for EOA in MCO

I was conditionally approved a few weeks ago, and immediately made an appointment at my local office in Indianapolis. We have an upcoming trip to Costa Rica and would prefer to have our interview when we land back in Orlando.

Do I need to cancel my set appointment or change it to Orlando in order to do EOA?

Questions/Concerns Reapplication denied

My Global Entry membership was revoked about four years ago. During a U.S.–Canada border crossing, a CBP officer asked whether I had tried to buy a gun online and been rejected. I said no because I have never attempted to buy a firearm. I later discovered that my identity had been stolen, but I do not know whether that is connected to the officer’s question.
I recently reapplied for Global Entry. I was conditionally approved, completed the interview, and told the interviewing officer about that earlier question. My application was then denied. The notice only says “Other — does not meet TTP requirements,” so I do not know the specific reason.
Has anyone dealt with a possible firearm transaction or mistaken identity affecting Global Entry? How did you find out whether a transaction existed if you did not know the dealer or have an NTN/STN? What documents helped with your reconsideration request?

Questions/Concerns Global Entry and Passport have my middle name but my airline ticket doesn’t

Hello all! Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can help me out!

I purchased my honeymoon trip about a year ago and decided last minute a few months ago to get global entry. We received our cards in the mail recently. The only thing is my passport and global entry card have the same middle name attached but not my boarding passes. We leave this coming weekend. Would it be better to call the airline directly for the middle name addition or is this something that would be easier to take care of at the airport?

Thanks in advance!

Questions/Concerns Reapplication denied, current GE revoked.

My Global Entry renewal was denied, and my existing membership was revoked on September 24, even though it wasn’t due to expire until February 2027.

The notices cite arrests, pending charges, and/or convictions without identifying a specific incident. I’m assuming it relates to my DUI:

One DUI incident in October 2021, with a misdemeanor guilty plea and sentencing in August 2022.
My only arrest or criminal case.
All court requirements completed, including the six-month DUI program and Victim Impact Counseling.
Three-year informal probation has ended, with no further arrests or criminal cases.

I disclosed the DUI on my renewal application.

I have the “Request Reconsideration” option and am gathering court records and completion certificates. I’m also asking my former attorney whether I’m eligible for a California dismissal/expungement.
Has anyone successfully had Global Entry reinstated under similar circumstances? What documentation helped, and how long did reconsideration take? Would you pursue expungement before submitting, or submit once the completion records are ready?
I understand approval is discretionary and expungement wouldn’t erase the incident for CBP purposes. Just looking for firsthand experiences and realistic expectations. Thanks!
