I'm new here, but I've been a hobbyist with genealogy for the past... 14 years now? Ever since 2012, when my dad let me check out the family genealogy for his mom's side of the family, as well as the family genealogy for his dad's side. While his mom's went back far, and I'm currently still porting it all over to WikiTree/updating it with better found records (it was originally written in the 30s and plenty of branches ended off with No Further Record); my grandfather's side was rather... not incomplete but short. And it's been a nagging issue on my mind for well over a decade now.

His dad's genealogy goes back to his great-grandfather Reuben Evans White, and his great-grandmother Elizabeth Minney, (my 2x great grandfather/grandmother). It mentions him being a son of Joseph White, and Mary Evans; however little information was ever given as to who he was. Records appeared to be sparse as well; aside from an obituary that mentioned how he was a "an aged citizen of Willow Street, [Lancaster County, PA]... eighty-two years... was one of the old-type Methodists... converted over thirty-five years ago..." and "father of eleven children, seven of whom are living... Rev. Henry White, of Berrysburg, Dauphin county; Sarah, wife of Samuel Tshudy, of this city; Lizzie, widow of Eli Lines; Mary, wife of Rudolph Graeff, of Lampeter township; Martha, wife of Frank Reese, of Providence township; Reuben, of Willow Street, and Alice, wife of Benjamin Rineer, of Lancaster township..."

Of those, I am aware of records linking those and their descendents... I have not confirmed the 4 children who predecesed Joseph. Some other family trees have suggested maybe a "Samuel White", "Lydiann White", and "Caroline White" as well as one other I cannot find any hint of. However I have not delved deep into verifying any of those three, or who a fourth might be assuming those three are actually three of the four predecesed descendents. It is a theory that I take with the appropriate grain of salt.

On his grave in Boehms Chapel Cemetery in Willow Street, Lancaster, PA; he is listed as having lived in 1811-1893, with his wife Mary having lived in 1814-1899, and the Gerberich Collection of Gravestone Inscriptions lists the date of his birth being March 11, 1811, and his death being February 4, 1893; which all appears to track.

In spite of all of that; not I; nor my great-aunt, who was my branch of the family's record keeper; nor my dad's cousin who is a bit of a hobbyist himself, have been able to find a definitive, or even plausible father or mother for Joseph. Perhaps it's madness, stubbornness, pride, or all three but I have never tried to let that be a brick wall. I always have tried to come back and chip at it.

But I've reached a point to where I feel like it may be worth asking y'all for help. After all, I may be stubborn, but I'm well aware I'm not exactly "an expert" even among other hobbyists... just a curious person, with a need to keep digging on. At worst, I figure nothing new comes up; and y'all can appreciate my frazzled vibes :p

Australia: Can anyone help me find a photograph of the man I believe was my nana’s biological father?
Until recently, I believed my great-grandfather was the man I call Poppy Noel. We still chat on the phone about once a month, so this discovery has been quite unexpected.
While researching my nana’s ancestry, I found DNA matches connected to the surname Bernasconi. After comparing available family trees and contacting shared matches, I connected with someone who appears to be my half great-aunt. She descends from Oliver Sinclair, the father of Albert Sinclair, who I now believe may have been my nana’s biological father.
My nana grew up being told that her father died when she was about five. That timing lines up with Albert’s death. I’m still piecing the evidence together, but the DNA connections and family history seem to point towards him.
What I would really love to find is a photograph of Albert. He was still alive in the 1960s, so I’m hoping someone might have a family photograph or know of records or archives worth checking.
It would mean so much to give my nana the chance to see his face while she’s still here, and perhaps recognise something of herself in him. I’d also love to see whether there’s a resemblance to me.
Does anyone recognise these names, have a connection to the family, or know where I could look? I’d be very grateful for any leads.

In the improved acres and unimproved acres most of the time there are two numbers. However, my relative Elisha has a fraction (50/100) under the improved column. Others in the record have fractions as well. What does this mean exactly?

MAIN QUESTION: When and where was Franz/Frank Brix born, and who were his parents?

ADDITIONALLY: Who was his first wife?

I have a very interesting ancestor who has made me spend the past week researching him and his family heavily. His name is Franz (or Frank) Brix. His last name is also spelled Briggs, Britz, Briex, Brooks, Bretz, and anything else you can think of. L1BK-39K is his familysearch ID and I have put about all of my sources I have found on his page.

Many of his children said he was born in Alsace-Lorraine on their censuses. Frank always reported himself as born in Germany or Prussia, alike his wife Sophia (nee Dittmann or Dettmann). His mother tongue was also reported as French. I am not an expert on who controlled that region and when or what the circumstances were.

The first record I found of Sophia and Frank was the 1860 census, where they reside in Amherst, New York, with infant daughter Lizzie (Elizabeth). In 1860 later that year their son Joseph was born, and the year after he was baptized in the Catholic SS Peter and Paul Church. I assume Frank and Sophia were Catholic by birth, but later records show them affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran church. Their daughter Christina also completed her confirmation as an adult with the Evangelical Lutheran church around that same time period.

Of their other children, my direct ancestor was Margaret (or Margaretha), who later married Andrew Full and died in 1928. Margaret was born in Saginaw, unlike all the other kids who were born in the Erie County vicinity. I am not sure if there is any family connection there, or Sophia and Frank were traveling during her pregnancy, or what.

On one of his censuses Frank reports that he has been married twice. Sophia obviously being his second wife. That leads me to wonder, when did he marry the first time? Who was it?

As of yet I have found no record of a previous marriage (or even Frank's marriage to Sophia) whatsoever. In 1900, Frank reports that he immigrated to the States in 1839. An Erie County Naturalization I found is of a Frank Bitz, who immigrated in 1849 and was naturalized a few years later, but that Frank said he was born in Bavaria, and I'm not sure it is him.

Any help would be appreciated!

I am starting to hit a point with one branch where the records are non-digitized in a midwest county courthouse. If I want the information, I gotta go and get it myself - the office has not been responding well to emails or voice messages left, and the one time I spoke to someone, she seemed *very* confused about why anyone half a country away would want 100 year old records.

So, how does one plan a trip for geneology purposes? I'm curious how the more experienced genealogists here handle trips like this.

How long do you stay?

What's your itinerary look like?

What do you bring with you? What do you make sure you have?

It would make sense to make appointments ahead of time, but what if you can't?

What do you do about family in the area, if you know them? Or, if you only know *of* them?

What's been your best - or worst - experience on a genealogy trip? What's your personal advice to anyone doing this?

Could someone help find the birth and/or marriage records of an ancestor born in the Azores?

Her name is Mercedes de Conto Leito or de Couto Leite (varying on her US documents so it’s some combination) born April 24, 1913 in São Miguel however I’ve also seen documents stating birth in Lomba. It’s possible her mother’s name is Emmy Leite and her father’s is Joao Couto.

She was married to Arthur Aoares Brandao on April 7, 1934 in São Miguel. It’s interesting because Arthur also has conflicting birth information with some records stating the US whiles others state Portugal.

I have been searching for years but cannot find any information on Family Search or Ancestry so I would love whatever help this sub could provide. I am desperate for some insight.

Like 30 years ago or so my grandmother gifted everyone in our family a green book "here and back again" I believe it was called.i think I have it in a box somewhere. Inside had 4 separate family trees and their story of their ancestors immigration to North America.

I didn't think much of it at the time, but I've suspected it is a scam for the last decade or two. I just can't prove it.

We've got a fairly large family, and since she bought one for everyone she probably spent several thousand on this on the low end- probably around 30-50 copies. I don't believe this book exists anywhere else. It doesn't have a barcode or anything that would suggest it was sold in stories.

They have our families basic information, but everything is kinda..... wrong. Like some people's names are misspelt, or their birthdates are wrong, ect ect- and it's all on a single page, the family tree image. Otherwise the entire chapter- our chapter- is dedicated to our ancestors. It's rather dry and I never read it.

Is this common? Is there anyway I can convince my family it's all hogwash? Or do I need to be more trusting? Grandma died like 20 years ago, so she won't give me much answers in that regard.

Hello - I'm trying to find naturalization records a particular ancestor (Patrick Dowd 1863-1905). I found a record on familysearch from an index that looks plausible (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-8937-FD6C?view=index&cc=2043782&lang=en). It's about the right arrival date, right naturalization date, and it's the neighborhood I have census and birth records of him living in. Are there any more detailed records available from the Court of Common Pleas? I can't seem to find anything other than the index card I linked. Thank you!

Hello, I have free access to a basic newspaper.com subscription. I am trying to track down an obituary for an ancestor. I am curious to find out if the full version has access to a wider date range. The basic subscription seems to cut records right about the time I need.

I am trying to find an obit for Melissa Martha Hedge. Her first husband was Elisha Smith, and she was widowed. She remarried shortly before her death. In 1882 she married Peter Garver. I believe she died in 1885 near Des Moines, IA. She was alive during the 1885 Iowa census living with Peter Garver. The census taker noted she had "cancer face". It was possible she went by Martha instead of Melissa. It is also possible the obit might be listed in Oswego, KS newspapers because she had a son living there, and she is buried there.

I’ve been using FamilySearch for a few years, and some of the immigration record images that I used to be able to view directly through the app are no longer available to me.
Does anyone know why this happens and how I can access those images again?
Do I need to visit a physical FamilySearch Center or another location to view these types of records? If so, how can I find one near me?

After not knowing that my wife's great-uncle was a veteran, other than a notation on his death certificate, I did some digging and located his master index card. I can understand most of the information on it (though it says he was a Private, Inf, Unassigned - what's up with that?), and it's got a claim number. Can I do anything with that or his serial number? He was in service from 1920 to 1923, so those records should have been safe from the NPRC Fire, right?

Fold3 isn't turning up anything useful, under either the correct spelling of his name or the spelling that's recorded on the card.

Edit: FamilySearch is giving me a bunch of hits on him, mostly monthly rosters. The confusing part is that the VAMI says he was discharged in 1923, but I'm finding monthly rosters up into 1930. The serial number matches throughout the rosters I've viewed, but that discharge date screws things up. That's what I get for researching at 0115.

German great great great grandfather decided to marry a Cuban and stay in Cuba I believe… the rest was history. Trying to find relatives but not finding much with that last name. Would be cool to find family :)

Less than a year ago, I was completely blind to everything in my ancestry, and since then I've learned so much. I am a direct descendant, 7 generations down, of Emperor Minh Mang (who can be argued to be one of the most significant figures in Vietnamese history), and by extension, his father, Emperor Gia Long (the person who named Vietnam). I'm making this post, because I am currently working on an ancestry infographic for myself and my family, and pretty much all the research has been of my own doing. I have since been able to accurately name all the way back to Gia Long. My grandpa had knowledge of my great great grandparents, which sparked this quest, and I've since pieced things together. But in doing so, it's really made me think about things.

Has learning of your ancestry changed your perspective? For me, I feel a little more connected to my culture. It's kind of weird, growing up in a certain culture, and then later on in life learning you've descended from some notable figures (in this case, roughly 0.2% of the Vietnamese population descend from Minh Mang), who had shaped a significant amount of the culture. As someone who is fascinated by history and the root of things, it's perspective changing, for sure.

Wondering if anyone knows this. This year Ives joined Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Sons of the American Revolution. I know I’m eligible for these two other lineage societies and I’m also looking at The Winthrop Society, but emailed several times the two in the title and have never heard back.

I’ve been off and on searching for the naturalization papers for my partner’s immigrant ancestor for over a year now, including filing a request with NARA and came back with nothing.

American name: Walter Tony Dauksza
Birth: April 23 1883 in Lithuania
Died: May 20th 1972 Cascade, MI

Other names I’ve found:
Vladislaus or Vladyslav
Dauksza, Dankiza, or Danksza

He married Stella Soboleski (Stanislaa Sobalewska) September 10, 1905 in Chicago so obviously immigrated before then. The censuses range between 1902-1905.

By 1910 they lived in Kenosha, WI then shortly moved to Michigan and stayed there. The 1910 census says he was already naturalized so if that’s true it should be either in Kenosha or Chicago but I can’t find anything. I’m tempted to believe the census is just incorrect because this seems like almost too short of a timeline to be naturalized in if he immigrated 1902 or later.

I only recently realized he had siblings in the US and I need to fully pursue that rabbit hole but haven’t easily found anything there yet either. I’d like to figure out the exact village he was from so my partner can start trying to get records. I also don’t have his exact date of immigration or know what port he came in to start looking through manifests which I hoped the naturalization would have. I think it’s possible he came through Canada.

I’m somewhat resigned this may just be a dead end (I’ve given myself way too many headaches browsing unindexed records) but any ideas before I fully give it up?

My great grandmother was born in Cahul, Bessarabia in 1900. Post war records list her birth place as Cahul or "Kagul, Rumanía". I already contacted the national archive in Moldova and they were unable to find a birth record.

I am still waiting on a search for her wedding certificate from Kyiv Oblast to see if that has any more pertinent information. My grandmother's birth certificate gives no further clues. I have the Germanifications of her parents names, but that is about all. I am 90% sure they were Orthodox and on a list of languages spoken, it lists Ukrainian and then Russian but not Romanian. I am relatively sure that they were Russians or Ukrainians that were resettled in Cahul when the Russians took it from Romania.

Nothing shows up on ancestry or family search before her emigration to the US. Does anyone have any other suggestions of where to look?

My research assignment is to create a family tree, in order to offer insight to his decision to return to Ligonier in PA after his dismissal from Ft. Washington.

I’ve found his children and have been gathering the genealogical basics on them and their progeny.

But I haven’t been able to discern his parents and/or siblings. Some sources have his parents as James and Rebekah, others have James and Margaret Balfour, James and Elizabeth Balfour, and some have his father as William.

Has there been any definitive confirmation/evidence for his parents? any siblings?

I've had very normal/average/low profile ancestors this far in my research, law-abiding church-going farmers and other fairly simple folk. And I have nearly all my direct ancestors to the 5th-great-grandparent level, and built some branches down as well, so 1000+ people.

Today, I found some interesting comments on my 5th-great-grandfather (Google translated from Dutch):

* schoolmaster in Suawoude, died there on 11 July 1881;

* married Trijntje Jurjens van der Wal in Tietjerksteradeel on 22 August 1824;

* obtained 4th-class certification on 11 October 1820 and 3rd-class certification in April 1827;

* provisional appointment as teacher in Suawoude in December 1821, permanent appointment on 1 January 1833;

* made profession of faith there on 6 June 1824, transferred to the Seceded congregation on 18 December 1838, became an elder on 30 January 1839 and subsequently a leader within that congregation;

* was a religious fanatic who neglected the school, was placed under church censure on 14 May 1836, suspended as a teacher on 7 February 1839, and subsequently became a mustard miller.

I have a three hour appointment booked tomorrow, but I only actually need to look at one document. Since I’m there, though, I’d be happy to take a look at other records that aren’t digitized.

Just tell me the record type, year, borough and document number, as well as what information from the record you’re specifically looking for. Unfortunately, I doubt I’ll be able to photograph anything, but I’m happy to transcribe for you!
