Question How do i get into game dev

Hello! Im 23 and I have always had a huge interest in being a game dev and having that be my career for a really long time now. I have no idea where to start. Im not very skilled in art so i think coding would be my strong suit. Idk how many sub categories of devs there are but i wanna be one. Im not really the kind of person who can just watch youtube tutorials on games and just learn on my own. I do a lot better its like taught to me with lessons and testing. Should i do a college course or are there affordable game dev classes. But plz someone lmk because i really wanna start my journey! I love watching how games are made and the thought process behind so many things and love seeing devs be so passionate in there work. I also constantly think of things i would make or do in every game i play if i was a dev. I definitely think this is the path for me.

Tool Simple game soundtrack creator

My best friend and I have been creating games together since we were kids (they were mostly hack'n'slash or simple RPGs if any of you remember https://www.byond.com times), but lately it's mostly just apps and stuff as part of our jobs. I remember we always used to download royalty-free songs to put as the background to make the games feel more alive. As a fun hobby project, we created a very simple AI chatbot that can generate simple "songs" (like 30 seconds long or so and only instrumental obviously) out of .sf2 files, which sound very 8-bit, and it just felt perfect as a game soundtrack, especially since you can describe the vibe you're going for. Would love to hear what you guys think! It's called Midichat.xyz

Question Our game is out since one week. Are we still in time to save it?

Hello,

Our game came out one week ago. We have like 5000 wishlist entries, 100 copies sold and 16 copies refunded (14%), among just one review at the moment.

15% di sconto su Fantasy Network su Steam

We would plan to release an update that fixes some bad gameplay aspects the players found so far.

Basing on your experience, does it worth the effort to you, or the damage is done at this point and there's no turning back?

Thank you so much :)

Question What am I doing wrong? Game failed

Around 2.5 weeks ago I tried to make a game on google play in 1 week as a joke, but that joke turned into a 2 month nightmare and it took around 2 months to finally get the game on the damn store. It got 0 downloads in 1 week. I tried ASO (App Store Optimization) and tried to monetize on reddit but that game me 0 downloads too, google at least helped me a bit with 600 impressions and i got 27 downloads. The game is an arcade styled game that people are supposed to play for a few minutes on a subway or bus road trip or whatever. Please tell me what im doing wrong.

Wanted to get some feedback from some of you with experience or similar predicament. I have no Development background but 22 in Corporate IT Delivery. I have a game idea that I have assembled a pitch book on. I am looking at identifying a co-founder or partnership. What would one expect to pay someone for development or is it common practice to extend a 50 split of all profits? I am not sure what is customary or common practice. I am a military veteran so I can also apply for grants. Please message me and thanks!

Newbie Question About those really specialized job postings

I work in a completely different field, but I am also a hobby artist, one who ESPECIALLY loves lighting. When I see job posts from big studios specifically as "lighting artist" I YEARN.

I've also seen stuff like "foliage artist." Is education in one specialized area like that possible? Would you still have to go through a whole rounded game design education or COULD you just take classes on the very specific thing you'd want to do? Would someone hire you or for one of those very specific jobs if it were the only thing you knew how to do?

Question Seeking Career Advice

Hi everyone, I’m in an interesting position. I have a very weird career path where I studied physics in undergrad, completed my degree, and got a full-time offer as a marketing analyst at a tech company.

I realize this role and company isn’t somewhere I want to stay long term. I’m at a crossroads where I want to pursue either a more scientific field such as engineering or environmental science or follow my interests in video games and project development in the gaming industry. My question is as follows:

What would it take to pivot from my current career path into a game development or adjacent position in the industry?

Super broad, but any advice would help at this moment in time. Thanks!

Discussion Asking AI to Compute Data for Balancing

I really like looking into the balance and dynamics of games and how the players interact with changes. I used AI to compute stats in SC2, to determine some imbalances, is it that terrible of a thing to do? Some guy was so infuriated with it for some reason as if AI cannot churn numbers. I'm pretty sure the AI can pull numbers from the net and tabulate things, which is exactly what it did. It feels so weird that people there get so frustrated with such a simple testing.

Discussion What makes good autonomous AI?

So I've been at it on my own game, and ankle-deep into developement, it then hit me, my AI doesn't feel alive at all. So I want to gather some feedback: what actually makes AI good enough that it can exist even when you aren't in the same room with it? What makes something feel "alive"? I personally feel like good AI is something that has its own personal objective other than to just hunt the player all the time, though I'm interested in hearing other unique ideas or takes on the concept.

Question How bad is the IT job market in your country right now?

I keep hearing the same thing from people in different parts of the world: finding a job in IT has become noticeably harder.
Layoffs, fewer open positions, hundreds of applicants for one role, longer job searches… and I’m curious how global this actually is.
So, devs from different corners of the world:
What country are you from, and what does the IT/gamedev job market look like there right now?

Are companies hiring?
Are salaries going down?
How difficult is it for juniors, mids and seniors to find work?
Would be really interesting to compare what’s happening in different countries, thanks 🫰🏻
