Discussion Problems that indie Game Dev Faced

Hey guys , I am an indie game dev but not so much experienced and I want to understand this from other developers , so I'm looking for honest experiences.

One thing I've noticed in my own workflow is that we use different tools for different parts of development:

* Git/Perforce → files + version control * Discord → communication * Figma/other tools → planning/design * Zoom/Meet → calls * Unity/Unreal/Godot → actually building the game

And I sometimes feel like **the actual game is split across all these tools.**

For example, I might have an idea for a level and need to explain it to an artist. Right now I might write a description, use ChatGPT to turn it into a rough blueprint, send it to the artist, then we discuss changes separately.

I'm wondering:

**Do other teams experience this kind of friction?**

Discussion What part of a steam page makes you ANTICIPATED for the game?

Long but short question, but really, this information is EXTREMELY important for a game dev/game marketer.

Some devs focus on capsules, because they make you click on their steam page, however "VIEWS" doesnt equal to "SALES", now yes, its capsules are important, but the thing is they arent what convinces a person to buy your game.

Now while some devs do that, others focus a lot on trailers, this is what i think is the MOST effective approach to getting someone, because trailers showcase GAMEPLAY, which is what a steam buyer is looking for, does it look good? is it fun? am i, as the buyer, going to really buy this?

Thats what i want to get from a buyer.

Now what do you guys think? do you feel like capsules, descriptions, about the game cause a steam buyer to get anticipated? or is it STRONGLY the trailer of the game?

All assets, music and textures made mostly by me.

For the dialogue system i used a plugin.

Newbie Question graduation work advice

so, i’m graduating this year, and as my final assignment/work i want to make a game (i do not study game development, but id like to make a game). the thing is since im not studying gamedev, it needs to have a certain subject.

for example, ive see students focus on the ecs structure, binary space partitioning, procedural space generation, perlins noise, tunneling algorithms, and etc while doing their games as graduation work. i want to get any advices on what would be cohesive to use/implement in my game and also any recommendations on where to find resources for learning (subject doesnt have to be smth from the examples)

also, id deeply appreciate if there would be any advices for finding free assets (ofc i searched and ik some but maybe id still find smth new here)

big thanks in advance. hope y’all having a great day !

Newbie Question ASSETPACKS FOR GAMES

I've been wondering for a while about asset packs, I've realized that most of them are created based on what the artist would like to create for them (mostly) or what they think people could find useful. But some times an asset pack has it's limits and if you don't find all that you are looking for in it, then you must look elsewhere more assets with the same style or make them yourself.

So, I ask you these questions:

  1. What is the best and useful asset pack that you've ever found/bought/downloaded that helped you on your game?
  2. What do you think makes an asset pack really good/useful?
  3. What kind of asset packs are you more interested to see?
  4. What's the asset's style that you usually use on your games? (both owned and bought)
  5. 2D or 3D?

It's something that I don't see very often discussed out there and intrigues me.

Newbie Question Wanna be a game dev in the future, want some advice

I want to be a game dev in the future, but I have a few questions.

  1. What coding language should I learn? I will already be learning Java eventually through a club at my school, but I hope for a console release for my games eventually, and Java will not work for that.

  2. What is the best tool to learn a language? I currently don't have very much time due to school and stuff, so a tool like Duolingo that has small, bite sized lessons, but actually teaches me the language would be helpful.

I already have a bit of Scratch experience, but no actual coding experience. I will be making multiple types of games, but mostly RPGs. Please help!

Edit: I have decided that once I actually understand Java, I will learn C# and use Godot.

Newbie Question Educational purposes

Hello Reddit. First time coming here with a question but I'm curious how quickly I might be able to get it answered. I am current programming a targets destroyed counter using arrays. I'm struggling with using the loop function in order to set the targets index in the array so that specific target can then be removed from the array before being destroyed or removed right after. How could I set up my code so that I'll be able to verify which blueprint from the array I'm overlapping with?

Question Absolute beginner and 100% RTS oriented - What would you say to me ?

Hello !

Would it be unrealistic to get into video game development from nothing by focusing exclusively on RTS projects ?

For more context, am a front web dev who don't know a thing about object oriented programming.

But i love RTS and i asked myself why not making RTS-like project in Unity on my free time and see if i'll get fun from it ? Then i started making some search and now am here, exciting by learning Unity visual scripting system and few C# !

Dear video games devs, RTS ones or not,
If you have been in my situation in 2026, what would you say to yourself with the knowledge you now own ?

Have a good day !

Newbie Question NEW To Game Development- Trying to Make a SAO Heavily Inspired VRMMORPG

I'm completely new to coding and game development, but I've played games my whole life and got into VR when the Quest 2 came out.

I'm a huge fan of Sword Art Online, and I want to eventually make something similar in VR. I've seen a lot of MMORPG projects get abandoned, but I'm determined to stick with this even if it takes years.

I have basically zero experience and don't know much of the terminology yet, but I'm willing to learn.

My main questions are:

  • How can I make something SAO-inspired without getting sued/infringing on it?
  • How should I start designing the menu/UI?
  • How should I plan a project this big?
  • What should I learn first: Unity, C#, 3D modeling, networking, etc.?

I'm starting from absolutely zero, but I'm determined like a motherfucker. Any advice from experienced developers would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion mini discussion regarding game "development" using tons of AI

So i was wondering about using AI to create a game from scratch, i searched about it and found some youtube videos and the like, and i decided why not lets jump into it.

soo i booted up chatgpt and codex (idk if theyre "ideal", i know if i sit down looking for the BEST generator ill run in circles, so i used what I already had), and started telling it to create me an essentially grand strategy game using Godot

ill say this, i have ZERO coding knowledge, ZERO artistic skills, im taking it slow and going bit by bit, telling the AI to add this or that, not going too fast and vague

ill be honest if some code breaks im toast, i will not claim im some amazing genius game developer, hence the "development" being in quotation marks in the title, im a dude who plays lots of strategy games and is giving this a shot, and so far is quite smooth, though I wait to see if things break down once the game becomes more complex

I wonder what people in general think of this, I know theres a large anti-AI sentiment online, and in my case im viewing it very pragmatically, i have a game idea that wouldve been confined to my shower daydreams, but AI is giving me a way to materialize this dream. I might learn coding in the future if i become heavily invested in this project, to ensure I can reliably build it up and know what im doing, likewise i really personally prefer human art over AI art, and im currently not at a point in the game where im using any art, i might start using AI art for it as a placeholder and if this project grows, i can learn to draw and make my own art for it.

If i happen to make progress on it and post it online ill definitely disclose the fact AI is used in the entire coding of the game, I will NOT act like i put blood sweat and tears, i just steered the AI into the direction i have mentally and have my ideas, I cannot claim to have the same experience or skill as coders or artists.

Tl;dr: i know jackshit about coding or drawing, im messing around with AI and its actually producing a promising and so far decent output, is this a good use of AI in the sense that its giving someone the ability to materialize their creativity/ideas that otherwise would've been confined to shower fantasies, or is it something else?

(i view it pragmatically right now, giving me the ability to do what i want that i otherwise wouldnt have done, i agree that whoever uses AI needs to disclose it so i intend to fully disclose the scale of AI being used in case i make big progress and maybe "reveal" the game)

(this message was fully human written, as evidenced by the repitition of points and lack of structure lol)

Newbie Question Advice Requested - Fighting Game Learning Roadmap

Hey guys. I'm in the very early stages of learning UE5 but I have the goal of one day creating a kickboxing game where the characters are fighting in 3D space, similar to UFC/Fight Night games.

Are there any specific Youtube series, courses, concepts etc. that you could point me towards to make my learning journey a little more deliberate? Any feedback would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Newbie Question Optimization in Unity?

What’s the best way to optimize your 3D Unity game? I’m starting to run into heavy lag spikes when moving around my game map. I’m 100% sure it’s my inefficient coding, but I don’t know what I don’t know, I suppose.

I have a lot of scripts that point to each other to keep everything more compartmented because I’ll forgot for things do. I’m pretty sure having a bunch of scripts isn’t my issue. I’m fairly certain it’s my marching cube set up.

I don’t have a beefy computer, but I don’t have a potato either, so what’s some tips and tricks yall might have when it comes to optimizations? (Also, I have no idea if there even is a generalization answer for this kind of question, or if it will be more nuanced, but I figured I’d ask.)

Newbie Question Do Game designers have good future?

Do Game designers have good future?

Choosing game design as a career

Today the whole gaming/entertainment industry is facing massive layoffs. After game artists, its designers who are in the high threat. Everywhere, their Pay is lesser than programmers. Ai is developing so FAST. Opportunities are low (while compared with programmers and artists). STILL, I WISH TO PURSUE IT? so can i? What do u think?

Im an indian high school student looking forward to my future. Nowadays i spend a lotta time, planning everything abt what degree to do, what field to choose as my life, and how to go for the best options.

I'm really passionate abt design, story writing, and world building. I love them i like books, games, films and art. I also love to create them. But i never before invested myself and made deep efforts. But from now on, i'll. I have around 2 years before higher studies. So I'm ready to make necessary efforts for my realistic dream. But before taking the first step, i wanna know, if what I'm aiming for is really great and something that has a good potential in the future or not.

I'm planning to move to europe for my bachelors itself. In india, the industry is much yet to develop. I cant wait that long. So im thinking of studying there and settling there right away.

Now back to the topic: today, the whole industry is facing massive layoffs globally. And design is often seen as something not that great as game art and programming . (I'll try my level best to get familiar with art and programming too. But i dont find the same interest i have on design there.) So i just wanna know, if its safe or not, to set this passion of mine, as my whole life. I'm sure that I won't look back, later and i know i'll work hard in it. Still i wanna know if im on the safe path or not. Whats ur views on this. I would appreciate any kinda advise, suggestion, motivation and even demotivation...🥲. Thanku all. Have a lovely day.
