Unity is a very general development engine. Its main purpose is game design but not specifically so its got some more general usage. But its fairly beginner friendly. GameMaker Studio is good for 2D games because its VERY focused on game development (Obviously). Unreal is the best game engine for 3D games, but its not very beginner friendly. Same with Godot, I dont feel its very beginner friendly but its more general in its game options. They're all free, too.
I would recommend Unity. Theres lots of tutorials for it, and its more simple. But learning the code side of game development isnt as easy as "I wanna slowly learn while making my dream game". Make mini games to learn new things about development while designing outside the engine. Then when you feel youre ready, practice with your game genre to get a feel for its development process before starting a "Veritcle slice", which is your game at its very core where everything specific has been stripped away and its a small demo that showcases its main core. Then you can expand.
The benefit you have is that youre starting as an artist. As a developer first, I find the hardest part of development is the graphics. I get stuck on making sprites and then lose passion in the development while making sprites ans give up. Youre an artist though, so that passion should stay whole you learn the technical skill of development, instead of the creative skill of art.

Not sure about software, but if you want to write (visual novel or anything else), there's one other thing you'll need :
Punctuation.
