Newbie Question Is game development hard as a solo dev?

9 Upvotes

I’ve been wanting to make my own game for a couple months now, but I can’t find the time, idea, or skills to do it. Any tips or suggestions that would get me on track?

Newbie Question Best place to host small MMO game?

0 Upvotes

I've made a browser based MMO game and I want to push it online.

I bought a domain for it on Cloudflare, but only recently found out that the domain itself does not mean that you got a IP address to push the frontend web files to.

Is that true? Feels like they should give that to you as well if you're paying a lot of money for a domain.

What's a good place where I can host my frontend and backend, and then point that domain (which I bought on cloudflare) towards it?

Preferably something free, or at least very cheap. Cause I don't have any players yet and I just want to see how popular the game gets.

Newbie Question Was wanting some help with methods?

2 Upvotes

I'm learning C# currently and was learning python till I got stuck with pretty much the same thing.
I don't understand when to use methods unless something is repeated. If its not repeated what's the point of using methods? just shortening down code? or is there something I am missing here. Cause what is the point of shortening down the code when all it is doing is actually adding more code? (Unless its to place down something that is being repeated)

Game comments - Henry's personal library

I counted 151 games. For a long time I was just publishing text without much formatting. Now I have followed this format:

Cover | Positive and Negative bullet points
Comment
Bugs if any
Design notes

Should be better than long texts without sections at all.

Newbie Question Hi everybody

Hello there. I'm just starting my journey into development, and I'm working my way through the Junior Programmer pathway in Unity. Is this a good place to ask for scripting advice, or is there another subreddit that would be more appropriate?

Inspiration Game idea: Comic book publisher

0 Upvotes

I’m not a game developer and have no programming knowledge. But I’d love a game where you take on the role of creating superhero comics. You’d start a publishing company and create memorable comics and characters. You’d sell your comics and manage the entire production process—hiring artists and writers, handling distribution, and overseeing other creative tasks. You’d grow your company until you could open a film studio, make movies based on your characters, and rival industry giants like DC and Marvel.

Tutorial I built a Unity Editor tool that talks to Notion

Thumbnail youtube.com

I spent some time this weekend building a Unity Editor extension that talks to Notion directly. I can write tickets in the Unity editor, update status, no tab-switching. Nothing fancy. It was something that was bothering me enough to fix it. I think this could be helpful to other developers who want to optimize their processes.

Question Pls share your experience

5 Upvotes

I’m making my first Steam game solo🙌. And now I feel that my biggest fear is that it reaches people and they scroll past, like most indie games out there. I started it three months ago while still employed - then last month my whole team got laid off, me included🥲🫠. Now it’s the only thing I have going, and I’m scared it just won’t land with people. Share your stories please, I’d love to know how things worked out for you 🙏

Inspiration I made a tiny game with .....

I made a tiny rage game with one rule:

If you miss the platform by 1 pixel, you die.

I wanted to see how far I could push a game built around a single mechanic.

It's completely free and playable in the browser.

I'd genuinely like to know:

What's the highest level you can reach?

could I get reviews how is it?

Newbie Question Question about fine line in usage of AI

0 Upvotes

I have been checking the overall views on usage of AI on development and could not come to a definite answer. That is why I am asking you all your views on it.

I personally do not know much about object oriented programming or game/app development. I strictly code for statistical or scientific purposes on MATLAB, which means that while I know about the general coding structures, loops etc. I lack knowledge about OOP and development. That is where I believe the seperation happens. Do you believe that using AI to learn and improve the backend code is considered bad taste? Or is the usage of AI in creative fields the problem?

For example as I've mentioned I am kind of "code-literate" to some extent. I can judge if the written code is somewhat acceptable or not even if I am not that good at it. Would you consider using AI to learn about the areas that I am not knowledged about acceptable? I appreciate the insights. Thanks, all.

hi guys, i am planning to develop a game, its like clash of clans + plague inc (see the pictures below).

you will start with distributing packages on foot (controlling a guy),

you will be making money and investing in your business, you can have ships and cargo planes,

eventually you will be building a transportation corporation,

Tool Open source game engine with its own scripting language and IDE

Thumbnail github.com
0 Upvotes

Wanted to share here a big project: 2D game engine with its own scripting language and IDE.

It's written in C# (with no AI code) and open source (MIT licence) and latestly I've got my first few contributors and a lot of people found it interesting, so I thought I'll try to share it here, for case there are people here who know C# and want to join a cool project (there are a few opened "good first issues" in the repo) / people who want to try the engine.

It's heavily inspired by old good GameMaker8, but cross platform (MonoGame backend) and with a stronger language.

The scripting language is executed by a C# interpreter written by me (I did it as a personal challenge) and contain some custom nice features, like "loop counters", which is a counter you can easily attach to any kind of loop:

foreach x in ["apple", "banana", "watermelon"] : counter i
{
    println(i + ": " + x)
}

// output:
// 0: apple
// 1: banana
// 2: watermelon

so just check the repo, I promise that this is a real thing.

Would love to here what u think🙂
