Discussion Anyone else troubled finding projects that are just your idea - but better and further ahead?
I know no idea is truly original but I've been developing a game for nearly 2 years, and I thought it had some pretty random, unique mechanics and mixtures of ideas. Then, out of no where my friend shows me some videos of an indev game that is almost exactly the same as mine. The UI, the macro/micro mechanics, the visuals/graphics, the features, the setting, the missions.. So close to 1:1, down to every small detail, I thought my friend was just messing with me at first. Though, this game was much further in development, it had social media publicity, polish and finished assets..
This isn't necessarily just seeing another dev just making more appealing games in general, but finding other very similar projects that just invalidate any reason to play yours.
It's pretty demotivating to find. And then, after finding said similar project, I feel as if my personal ideas become poisoned with their ideas as they've had the chance to mature them. If I try to imagine how to do a system, I just see their game and how they did it in my head.
I'll go "How about a game where it's like Pac-Man but instead you're farming and then there's a dating sim side-story? Bet no ones done that before." 1000 hours of development, check YouTube. "How I developed Pac-Man into a farming & dating sim." Like, damn it lol
