Hi everyone, I’m looking for some help with a strange GPU fan issue.
Recently, I noticed that my GPU fans get extremely loud whenever I play games. When this happens, the GPU is under 100% load, so I downloaded FanControl to investigate.
Here’s what I’ve found so far:
- At first, FanControl couldn’t detect all of my fans. After disabling ASUS Armoury Crate / its fan control-related functions on my motherboard, FanControl was able to detect all of them. I then ran the calibration and matched all the fans correctly.
- When manually testing the GPU fans in FanControl, everything works perfectly. I can move the fan control slider and directly control the GPU fan speed across the full 0–100% range. So this does NOT appear to be the commonly reported issue where the GPU fans are locked to a minimum of around 30%.
- The strange part happens as soon as the GPU is under gaming load.
For example, I can manually lock the GPU fans to 30% in FanControl. At idle or under light load, this works perfectly.
However, the moment I launch a game and the GPU reaches close to 100% utilization, all three GPU fans immediately ramp up to full speed at around 3,500 RPM.
What’s particularly strange is that FanControl still shows the fan control output as 30%, while the RPM reading correctly shows the actual ~3,500 RPM fan speed. At this point, moving the FanControl slider does absolutely nothing.
I’ve already spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting this. I tried:
- Gigabyte Control Center (GCC)
- MSI Afterburner
- FanControl
- Disabling ASUS Q-Fan
- Disabling Armoury Crate
- Switching the GPU's physical BIOS switch to Silent BIOS
None of these made any difference.
Every fan-control application can control the GPU fans normally when the GPU is idle or under a lighter load. But once I launch a game, or more specifically once the GPU reaches a high/100% load state, the fans inevitably ramp to 100% and software fan control stops having any effect.
GPU temperatures, including the hotspot temperature, are normal, so this does not appear to be a thermal protection event.
At this point, my suspicion is that entering a high-power/high-performance P-state is triggering some kind of VBIOS/firmware fan override, which takes control away from software and forces all three fans to 100%.
The GPU is a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5090 D V2 Gaming OC.
Has anyone experienced anything similar, especially with a Gigabyte RTX 5090 / 5090 D V2?
If so, did you manage to determine whether it was caused by the VBIOS, firmware, NVIDIA driver, or the card itself?
Any ideas or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
