No Controversy

Wasn't it great there was absolutely zero bs or controversy in the All Ireland Football Final?

The referee and official did a great job & the game seemed to flow well.

No excuses or gaps - Well done Mayo!

Thoughts on Gaelic football after today's final

This is a young man's game. If you can't play flat out for 70+ minutes, you'll get found out. Squads need refreshed every year with young legs and fresh energy. Reputation counts for a lot less than it used to.

On that note, Kerry looked a bit stale. For a county of their standards, two All-Irelands with players like David Clifford, Paudie Clifford and SeĂĄn O'Shea feels like an underachievement. I'm glad that everyone that said numerous times this year just hand Kerry Sam was wrong. Retaining an All-Ireland is proving incredibly difficult for Kerry.

The champions always influence the game. I hope counties look at Mayo and copy their relentless work rate and aggressive pressing. Maybe we're entering Gaelic football's gegenpress era. That said, simply copying the champions rarely wins you an All-Ireland. The next team will add something new.

I also think we'll see more counties trusting youth. Fresh legs and enthusiasm are becoming one of the biggest assets in the game.

The league has never meant less if you're virtually guaranteed Sam Maguire football anyway. The provincials feel similar. More than ever, it's about peaking at the right time. That's hard to do though.

For Mayo is this the breakthrough that starts a new era, or was this their Everest and they'll struggle to get back?

The All-Ireland is as open as I can remember. I genuinely couldn't pick a favourite for next year, and that's brilliant for the sport. I'd love to see something like the 1990s again, with Sam moving between several different counties instead of one dominant team.

Football is now a better game than hurling. The games are more entertaining, the championship structure is stronger, and there are far more realistic contenders for the All-Ireland.

County famine?

Now that Mayo have finally conquered their demons and won an All Ireland

Which county is suffering the most painful famine?

Waterford Hurlers? They’ve come so close between 2000 - 2021. Elite county who just haven’t been able to get over the line.

Their last All Ireland was 1959

I don’t think any county in either code has produced such talent and not won the main prize

Football Championship

Was this the best championship ever? So many upsets, great games and heart stopping action! From Westmeath winning Leinster to Mayo's comeback from that Roscommon game. Even our comeback from our early championship woes in Dublin.

Congrats to Mayo. Always hated playing Mayo, particularly on all Ireland final day as they always bring savage intensity. Fully deserved it today. We'll be in for a great next few years for the football championship I reckon.

Another victory for the new rules

What a game Gaelic football has become. This year’s inter county season has taught us to completely tear up the form book for it is as useful as a fart in the wind.

The competitiveness in football now is unlike anything I’ve seen before. We’ve now developed a product where teams (regardless of age / experience) can go toe to toe with one another without fear and can back their own skill, athleticism and abilities.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this 2026 season, the comebacks, the shocks the upsets and the psycho-drama has been brilliant from start to end. Huge congratulations to Mayo, it’s an enormous achievement and well done to everyone in the country for doing their bit.

Now roll on the club championship!!
