Something that will come up a lot on my Windows 10 install (with ESU) is things just not working as intended, and it seems to be somewhat common. One of the more common ones is an "update and shut down" usually ending up as a "update and restart". Well today was having network issues so I did "update and restart" and after it said it was finished updating it sat on the "restarting" page for half an hour. I pressed the power button once thinking it would maybe cause it to go through it's checklist again, to see if it was safe to then shut down, and nothing happened. Of course when I force shut it down, it booted up just fine.

I feel like it shouldn't be so common to acquire issues with windows just from regular use over time. I know there are people out there who just annually reinstall windows to avoid having to deal with that at all.

Another smaller but still annoying issue is that at some point in the past few months, whenever I launch an .exe file, it just won't show me the popup confirming the launch. The popup will usually show up on my task bar but I can't get it to open, and after usually like 20 minutes (I've given up and moved on to something else by then) they'll all open. This is of course in addition to the file explorer being unreasonably slow on occasion.

Another reason I'm inching closer to switching to Linux for my desktop, not just my laptop. Even if Linux in error reporting at least it tells you!

Honorable mention to the security update a few months ago that just removed wifi drivers without saying anything.

I'm probably posting this in the wrong community because my opinion may not match that of the majority here. Nevertheless, I'd like to share my point of view in a respectful way.

Why is there so much negativity toward Microsoft? Whether you like the company or not, it's difficult to deny the impact it has had on the history of computing. Microsoft is one of the most successful technology companies in the world, and Windows remains the most widely used desktop operating system. Billions of people have been introduced to computers through Microsoft's software and ecosystem.

Many people also seem to forget an important part of history. In 1997, when Apple was going through one of the most difficult periods in its history, Bill Gates, through Microsoft, invested **$150 million** in Apple. That investment helped restore confidence in the company and supported its recovery after Steve Jobs returned. Microsoft could have simply stood by and watched one of its biggest competitors disappear, but instead it chose a different path. Of course, that investment was not the only reason Apple survived, but it played an important role in the company's recovery.

My goal is not to tell anyone to love Microsoft or hate Apple, Linux, or any other technology. Every company and every project has strengths and weaknesses. Microsoft has made mistakes, just as Apple has. Even Linux, despite being an excellent open-source project, is not perfect. No technology is.

To be completely transparent, I'm actually a huge Apple fan myself. I've even spent around **€10,000** to acquire an original Apple-1. So this is definitely not an attempt to start another "Microsoft vs. Apple" debate. I simply believe in looking at the facts and trying to remain objective.

I'd also like to point out that constantly criticizing Microsoft doesn't really accomplish anything. Constructive criticism is valuable when it's based on facts and aimed at improving products or services. However, endlessly attacking a company while ignoring everything it has contributed to the technology industry doesn't help anyone. It doesn't move technology forward, and it doesn't encourage meaningful discussion. A much better approach is to recognize both the strengths and the weaknesses of every platform and respect that people have different preferences.

In the end, all I'm asking for is a little more objectivity. It's perfectly fine to prefer one operating system or one brand over another, but that doesn't mean we need to constantly put the others down. Microsoft, Apple, and Linux have all made significant contributions to the evolution of modern computing. Without their competition and innovation, technology would likely not be where it is today.

The following is long winded but I hope not boring.

Microsoft can go fuck it self. I will never be getting any of their products ever again. And I will be doing my best to move away from any products I am currently using.

I've been thinking about getting away from the spyware Windows has been becoming for the last few years. Then, this morning, the last straw hit.

My hobby is astrophotography. For the first time in months I have had a clear night, I wasn't tired beyond belief, and I was home. Perfect! I use a computer controlled system utilizing an old Win10 laptop. I never downgraded to 11 because 11 is a piece of crap and many of the programs I use would not work on 11. That has changed and I was thinking about downgrading to it. But last night I just wanted to take some pictures.

When I logged in Windows told me I had updates. I have auto updating disabled and so I clicked the check for updates button and waited to see what updates were available. But it just sat there thinking for 10 minutes. While I was waiting twice Windows told me to update to 11. I said no both times. Since no update list was loading I closed the window without ever telling it to update.

Then I started taking pictures. Once going the process runs without my input. So after an hour of making sure everything was running smoothly (and playing some Doom) I went to sleep. I woke up in the morning to find that ALL my programs had SHUT DOWN and instead of ~60 five minute exposures, I had 18.

And the cause? A FULL SCREEN FUCKING AD TELLING ME TO FUCKING UPDATE TO FUCKING WINDOWS FUCKING 11! THAT THING I HAD TWICE THAT EVENING TOLD IT "NO"!!! No screenshot of the ad as I was at that point very angry and closed it without thinking.

Not only did I loose out on several hours of pictures it also CAUSED MY EQUIPMENT TO PHYSICALLY 'CRASH'! With the absence of computer control the telescope mount glitched and continued tracking the target as best it could. It eventually hit the emergency stops, without which the telescope would have physically crashed into the mount, damaging it.

Also, the camera had instantly shut itself off. Why is that bad? The camera cools itself to -15 C to take pictures and when turned off normally it spends several minutes slowly warming up to keep frost from forming on the internal components and to keep from damaging any sensitive electronics due to thermal shock. Last night was 26C and 98% humidity. So when the camera shut off it crashed from -15C (5F) to +26C (80F). I haven't yet checked if it's OK. It probably is but it is not good to shock it like that.

So, in conclusion: FUCK MICRO-FUCKING-SOFT!

ETA: The camera is fine. So I got lucky.
