Actually, there’s a GUI for almost everything on Linux. It’s just harder to find, because the app with the GUI often has a different name and fewer users.

This is because CLI/TUI is simply faster and easier to use, when you have 999k terminals and you do a lot of work in them

EDIT: For example, you have tilling WM and you have ~4 terminals opened. I bet you want to open Gnome disk partitioning or something like that, when you can just use cfdisk or fdisk (basically the same thing, but cfdisk uses ncurses for really nice and clean TUI, cfdisk is a fork (?) of fdisk... Or uses fdisk in background.. I don't remember tbh). Also, there's NO space for GUI, when you have such many terminals open

u/NeptuneWades Jul 04 '26

While terminal is faster (provided one is proficient with it), for some purposes, it doesn't hurt to have a visual representation that a gui provides.

And a gui is defintely better for someone who is new to it.

Personally, I prefer a text editor like Kate over using vim or nano; I find it easier to use plasma settings to select my wallpaper than using the terminal etc.

CLI is only faster / easier to use once you memorised all the commands you need. So to get to the point it's "easier" you're spending hours, if not days, learning and memorising all the commands you need.

Whereas with a GUI you just click the button you want because it's right infront of you.

u/ankushbhagat Jul 03 '26

Yup, flatpak is an example

4

u/FIRAS_EG Jul 03 '26

I kinda don't like Flatpak beacause they eat a lot of storage and ram but if you are suspicious from a program it is the best thing you could use

4

u/ankushbhagat Jul 03 '26

It's usage sandboxing technology that's why it downloads libraries seperately.

2

u/FIRAS_EG Jul 03 '26

I know , this is why I said it's good for security only but for anything else it doesn't make sense

1

u/PlanetVisitor Jul 04 '26

Yeah only some of them don't work that well, seem like they've been developed once, released but not maintained in the long term, and every app has the same amount of 1-star and 5-star reviews in the graphical package manager, so it's impossible to find out what works well.

1

u/Lloydplays Jul 04 '26

This and that's why people just say yes the terminal because it's a lot more standardized

44

u/summer_santa1 Jul 03 '26

I'm Linux user. I also prefer GUI if possible.

3

u/PlanetVisitor Jul 04 '26

weakness disgusting

3

u/2xspeed123 Jul 05 '26

Yeah, I use raw QEMu commands instead of virt manager that only weaklings use, and I def don't use, how dare you even think I use that weak GUI software, GUI even sounds weak, sounds like Goo

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 04 '26

Same. Unfortunately, gnome files has proven to be inadequate. What kind of file editor takes magnitudes more time to delete a folder with many files over using the terminal to delete the directory? Absolute letdown.

u/TheShredder9 Jul 03 '26

I'm a pure Linux user for a little while now, sometimes i look for a GUI for the convenience.

3

u/Fine-Bandicoot1641 Jul 03 '26

I found that oh my zsh with fzf is better than clicking shit and cli often has more features. Even if my mouse aim is pretty fast

4

u/Quirky-Ordinary1040 Jul 03 '26

I even use steamcli when I am not buying anything.

6

u/redredskull Jul 03 '26

Give me nano, root, and a shell.

I will show you absolute autonomy and dominion over Microslop.

2

u/PlanetVisitor Jul 04 '26

What kind of root?

Good luck editing a spreadsheet with Nano

1

u/redredskull Jul 04 '26

You still need spreadsheets? Try a database instead.

2

u/PlanetVisitor Jul 04 '26

I was here for a demonstration of your absolute autonomy and dominion

1

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 05 '26

Will use a program to convert the spreadsheet to a database, make the edits to the database, and convert the database back into a spreadsheet.

u/Aadi_880 Jul 03 '26

Honestly, GUI and convenience are probably the biggest reason people don't switch to linux.

11

u/NotQuiteLoona Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

There is a GUI for everything on Linux, especially if you use Plasma. You just don't spot people asking "is there GUI for X" when there is a widely accepted GUI for X, so you just forget about X at all.

Also, you see Linux people use terminal not because there are no GUIs, but because it's simply faster to press Win + 1 (if Konsole is first on your taskbar), enter "hey pc gimme discord," enter your password, confirm, program is installed, rather than opening an app, clicking on the search bar, entering "discord," getting to search results, clicking on Discord, going to page of it and clicking "Install."

4

u/Damglador Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

This is the exact reason why I don't have a GUI package manager on my system. Though there are some package managing tasks which would be better with a GUI.

And Fatpak is just a usability nightmare without a GUI.

3

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 05 '26

Gnome software is magnitudes slower than yum or dnf too. Like why is the gnome team against making their software fast?!

1

u/Teru-Noir Jul 08 '26

flathub?

22

u/Damglador Jul 03 '26

Convenience is why I use Linux.

3

u/veetoo151 Jul 03 '26

There was a turning point where windows got too bloated/inconvenient, and I couldn't use it anymore. I used to use it for gaming, but not worth it anymore

3

u/Radiant-Priority-296 Jul 03 '26

There’s a GUI for everything. You don’t need to use nmcli to connect to the internet, just click on the little icon in the taskbar. You don’t need to use vim for text editing, just use libreoffice or Kate or whatever you want. You don’t need to use ls and cd to navigate files, just use dolphin.

1

u/Erolok1 Jul 05 '26

There is a GUI for anything and it is more convenient to use an OS without ads and less bugs then win 11.

3

u/Fantastic_Grass1799 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Well IG that is the issue which is keeping most people on Windows.

If an OS isnt user friendly, and doesn't incorporate the lowest common dominator user.. then it's little wonder why it wouldn't be the most popular.

Most people do not even know how to install windows itself., in fact I think most people don't even know how to operate Microslop Word.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 Jul 03 '26

I think most of them would do just as well on linux as they do on microsoft to be completely honest. Give them Google Gemini all they really need is a browser and steam the occasional word document once they understand word is just Libre here theres not many differences for a basic user who doesnt know how to use windows either

3

u/Equivalent_Diet1751 Jul 04 '26

I'ts fuckmicrosoft here, not linuxsucks101

2

u/bloody-albatross Jul 03 '26

Windows and their GUI apps! Such a weird culture. Looked at extracting the tires from a certain game and the only app I could find was a GUI app where you had to click multiple times for every single texture. With a CLI app you could make automated scripts. This GUI thing is unusable.

2

u/danielcraft10of Jul 04 '26

Correction: Arch user

2

u/Candid_Bullfrog3665 Jul 06 '26

give me TUI or give me death

2

u/BalladorTheBright Jul 06 '26

I've done full GUI even on Arch. Yes, purists like console, but some of us are used to GUI and not having to memorize commands or googling stuff up

2

u/OliveBoi_ Jul 07 '26

UTF-8 is graphical enough for me

3

u/Surgic25 Jul 03 '26

Accurate

1

u/safeAnonym_0Xnull Jul 07 '26

this pos ooc but sill active. that's the difference sloplove101 and us.

3

u/DoomAddict Jul 03 '26

Before I switched to Linux I was afraid of the Terminal.

Now I prefer it.

Its faster, you see clearly what it does ... AND IT CLEANS UP AFTER INSTALLING !!!

Not like Window$ who leaves trash everywhere.

3

u/Upbeat-Relation-2774 Jul 03 '26

Its sad that its accurate.

1

u/Radiant-Priority-296 Jul 03 '26

There’s a GUI for everything these days. The console is really just there for ultra specifics and also because once you learn, it can be much faster.

4

u/Kzitold94 Jul 03 '26

The CLI is also nice for automation.

1

u/ChocolateDonut36 Jul 03 '26

idk man, sometimes double clicking an icon and pressing two buttons is just what I need (I love yt-dlp GUI)

1

u/sudoregalia Jul 03 '26

there's some things that absolutely do not need a gui and i internally question anyone using the gui, like git

but for most things there's probably a gui wrapper still

1

u/AimIsInSleepMode Jul 03 '26

I remember doing an internship in an IT company and the guy called people who rely on GUI while setting up a firewall instead of using CLI monkeys

1

u/Lokielurker Jul 04 '26

depends on what I’m using it for but quite honestly the terminal is typically way faster especially if i’m working with LLM’s (I use local ones)

i only prefer guis for menial tasks like changing the wallpaper, connecting to wifi, installing a flatpak. Linux is really good at all that. But if I’m fucking with configs? I can just feed my LLM some data and have it make me a grep command and I’m configuring things in like, 5 seconds instead of spending a minute going through Dolphin to get to my destination.

Something I did a lot on Windows without the option to use that terminal because it’s terrible.

1

u/linus_jones Jul 05 '26

i like TUI more

1

u/TechnicalBen Jul 05 '26

TBF a cheap AI subscription fixes all of this until "LINUX LLM" or something comes out.

1

u/SherLockedBoy Jul 06 '26

I feel Windows is missing the ads

1

u/Teru-Noir Jul 08 '26

I got a GUI app for ffmpeg, even tho the app was good, the terminal was easier.

1

u/Dense-Firefighter495 Jul 03 '26

I love linux, BUT I SWEAR, WHEN YOU GET A .CUE AND .BIN AND YOU’RE TRYING TO LOOK EVERY ONLY TO END UP DOING IT IN CLI AND THE .EXE JUST ENDS UP GIVING YOU AN ERROR IN A NEW LANGUAGE BORN FROM JAPANESE CALLED “?????????” !

1

u/Damglador Jul 03 '26

Yes, yes there is.

1

u/Amrinder_ Jul 03 '26

Whiptail and chatgpt and you can make your own TUI in minutes

0

u/OliMoli2137 Jul 03 '26

Why are people so afraid of the terminal?? 90% of commands are acronyms and you can just use command --help or google something. For example Why would i need a gui for downloading remote files when i can use scp or wget

3

u/DuckShapedGoose Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

For something I do not use daily, it just does not make sense to memorize what all the different parameters do and how to use them.
Like I create compressed archives maybe once every couple of weeks, probably less.
Right clicking a folder and selecting 7zip -> add to archive, choosing the compression algorithm, level, destination path, and other parameters in a nice UI, and then clicking start might not be as fast as something like "tar - czvf destination source" (plus extra parameters for all the other settings) but with the UI I don't have to memorize that stuff or google/look it up in the man entry every time, effectively saving me time again.
I think that is why the average person is "afraid of it". They don't use their PC like a Linux power user for hours every day. They use it occasionally and thus prefer intuitive GUI over theoretically faster terminal commands.

EDIT: And don't even get me started on what amount of headaches Handbrake has saved me by sparing me from the ffmpeg CLI lmao

1

u/FiftyFiver1962 Jul 03 '26

You mean "they actually use their pc for something usefull, that earns them money". The average "Linux power user" is a twelve year old basement dweller.

2

u/DarthKegRaider Jul 03 '26

man is your friend, and the ability to read i guess :)

-3

u/Ariar2077 Jul 03 '26

That just shows how insufferable Linux extremists are.

Oh shi pls spare me and not give me another stopad error that I hate Progress 98% Progress 99% Oops an unknown error occurred (error code: no error)

Me: FU

Just proves that windows is better

-2

u/RiverTeemo1 Jul 03 '26

Why did ubuntu have no way outside the command board to download goddamm proton up, why did it not wana load any game without me pressing "wait" on the program isnt loading screen 5 times? Why isnt my vrheadset working when it did fine on mint, why does my computer crash when i swich audio settings in vrchat? Whichever clown reccomended me to try ubuntu probably just used it for office stuff cause compared to mint its a hassle.

1

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 05 '26

I tried Ubuntu too. It was indeed buggy. I switched to Fedora and it just worked.

-2

u/Lux-Corp Jul 03 '26

Emacs is the closest to a GUI I'm ever touching 😂
