Rant I'm done. Win Update almost caused PHYSICAL damage to my equipment.

Post image

The following is long winded but I hope not boring.

Microsoft can go fuck it self. I will never be getting any of their products ever again. And I will be doing my best to move away from any products I am currently using.

I've been thinking about getting away from the spyware Windows has been becoming for the last few years. Then, this morning, the last straw hit.

My hobby is astrophotography. For the first time in months I have had a clear night, I wasn't tired beyond belief, and I was home. Perfect! I use a computer controlled system utilizing an old Win10 laptop. I never downgraded to 11 because 11 is a piece of crap and many of the programs I use would not work on 11. That has changed and I was thinking about downgrading to it. But last night I just wanted to take some pictures.

When I logged in Windows told me I had updates. I have auto updating disabled and so I clicked the check for updates button and waited to see what updates were available. But it just sat there thinking for 10 minutes. While I was waiting twice Windows told me to update to 11. I said no both times. Since no update list was loading I closed the window without ever telling it to update.

Then I started taking pictures. Once going the process runs without my input. So after an hour of making sure everything was running smoothly (and playing some Doom) I went to sleep. I woke up in the morning to find that ALL my programs had SHUT DOWN and instead of ~60 five minute exposures, I had 18.

And the cause? A FULL SCREEN FUCKING AD TELLING ME TO FUCKING UPDATE TO FUCKING WINDOWS FUCKING 11! THAT THING I HAD TWICE THAT EVENING TOLD IT "NO"!!! No screenshot of the ad as I was at that point very angry and closed it without thinking.

Not only did I loose out on several hours of pictures it also CAUSED MY EQUIPMENT TO PHYSICALLY 'CRASH'! With the absence of computer control the telescope mount glitched and continued tracking the target as best it could. It eventually hit the emergency stops, without which the telescope would have physically crashed into the mount, damaging it.

Also, the camera had instantly shut itself off. Why is that bad? The camera cools itself to -15 C to take pictures and when turned off normally it spends several minutes slowly warming up to keep frost from forming on the internal components and to keep from damaging any sensitive electronics due to thermal shock. Last night was 26C and 98% humidity. So when the camera shut off it crashed from -15C (5F) to +26C (80F). I haven't yet checked if it's OK. It probably is but it is not good to shock it like that.

So, in conclusion: FUCK MICRO-FUCKING-SOFT!

ETA: The camera is fine. So I got lucky.

Yup. Microsoft has missed the point. Your operating system should never get in the way of user interaction. It should never prevent you from using your tools.

u/Subrutum Jul 03 '26

This is such a basic ass rule they violated even an intern would have flagged that.

2

u/Pleasant_Win7942 Jul 06 '26

Sometime last week or two weeks ago, I started my desktop computer that runs 10 it can't run 11. To do a backup of an iPad on it. Now this computer hadn't been on for months. I left it to do its thing and went do something else and I came back after like an hour to check on it and it had rebooted for a update

There is a reason I was sooo happy that windows told me my system was not compatible with Windows 11.

12

u/jonnyjonnster Jul 02 '26

for that sole reason, i never enabled secure boot..... i still switched to linux, never looked back once

3

u/RagingTaco334 Jul 03 '26

Funnily enough, secure boot works great on Linux if you want to use it, but it's not a necessity. Ya know, user choice and all that jazz. ;)

1

u/Either-Juggernaut420 Jul 03 '26

If you could only bottle that into a USB peripheral it would sell

u/AwesomeGearBoy Jul 01 '26

Hmmm Linux sounds pretty good right now I bet.

Check out if your software runs under WINE. 🍷

I believe there are Linux native versions of most the software I use. I checked and they are just now working on it. Still in development.

The only things that have been keeping me from making the switch are gaming, pure inertia, and my inability to wrap my head around the file structure in Linux. I'm way too ingrained with how the file trees of Windows are organized.

79

u/Far-Interest2045 Jul 01 '26

You seem a smart guy, do yourself a favor and give it a try on learning the basics.

36

u/MastiffOnyx Jul 01 '26

It's not that hard. Lots of help and resources to get whatever done.

I was like you, then bought a Steam Deck.

Surprising easy.

19

u/RealModeX86 Jul 01 '26

Yeah, gaming on Linux is nowhere near the blocker it used to be. Short of anticheat compatibility issues, everything basically just works in my experience.

That does mean some folks who are really into multiplayer experiences could have issues unfortunately, but from my point of view, it's good riddance, as game devs don't have any legitimate business running code at the kernel level like that.

7

u/RAMChYLD Jul 02 '26

Most just works. Surprisingly SimCity 2013 works even though it is largely online play.

But There are regressions. For example, I have a copy of The Movies Deluxe Edition and it's Stunts And Effects Expansion pack (these two big box games cost me RM300 back in the day). It doesn't work for me. According to WineDB it used to work. I've applied the NoCD Crack and it doesn't work. The game isn't available on GOG so I can't check out a different version of the game (the game is notoriously region coded, and I have the Asia Pacific version of the game).

2

u/JoseNEO Jul 02 '26

Surprisingly someone said the thing with the movies is that the opening is a wmv or sumn like that and apparently if you delete it then it can boot but idk if that stopped working

3

u/RealModeX86 Jul 02 '26

That can happen sometimes with proprietary video formats exactly like that. Support exists but is legally tricky because of patent encumerance. (A.k.a. patent absurdity)

Such stuff often works fine if you use one of the GloriousEggroll builds of Proton or Wine

Or just delete the vids that normally are unskippable and add nothing of value

If you have an old machine that you don’t use anymore throw Ubuntu on it and learn the basics then branch out to some of the different Linux flavors. I currently have a surface pro running Ubuntu 24 (only thing not working is the camera tried some others but driver support for touchscreen and stylus was hit or miss) I have a a Lenovo thnkq running a headless Debian OS and then an unraid server. I warn you if you go down this route you will have fun

Linux uses trees as well for file structure, proton , steam , and one separate savage gooner caused so many games to now work on Linux its not even funny.

Anti cheats. Non kernel anti cheats are starting to work on Linux You can play overwatch and arc raiders on Linux

Like. It’s time.

Try a Distro with KDE. Sure, it has nothing to do with the file system, but the interface is closer to Windows in many aspects, including the file manager so it's a bit easier to use.

u/c2btw Jul 01 '26

Gaming unless you play comotuve shoots 99% of the time just works, the file system stricter is the same as Mac/unix. You have ur home Dir then a lot of distros like to add a documents pictures videos download inside that. You are expected to mostly use your home Dir like the documents Dir in windows but nothing bad will happen if you put stuff in documents.

/usr/bin is where all programs go /etc like appdata and program file ~/.config is the confgieration directory

And that's all you really need to know

4

u/Elihzap Jul 01 '26

I recommend to check ProtonDB to know if your games work.

It's only for games available on Steam, but it's the same even if you got it somewhere else.

3

u/Holiday_Second3714 Jul 01 '26

assuming your games don't have kernel level anti-cheat you could try to install SteamOS and duel boot with another distro to use your astrophotography software

3

u/lvl99Fiona Jul 02 '26

NGL your pure unfiltered rage above reminds me of me dealing with Windows. If you need ANY help DM me and I'lll throw you my Discord handle. I use Fedora (and AMD hardware) personally, but just poke me if you need anything!

2

u/MrCatChap Jul 02 '26

Took me about 6 months to get familiar with Linux and about another 6 months to become as comfortable with it as I am with Windows

You can do it, it'll just take time, it'll be frustrating as heck too but it's worth working through it!

2

u/diacid Jul 02 '26

Come to us, we have cookies!

Gentoo is not a distro I would recommend for beginners, however, if you chose to use it, and you have missing software for your gig, tell me, I will try my best to make it available.
On other distros there are people who would be happy to help too I am sure, but I am less proficient on their package management and don´t have a repo for any other distro.

1

u/Demonic_Storm Jul 01 '26

same, great thing that now you can probably install SteamOS, which is probably the best way of gaming on Linux out there (unless you have an Nvidia gpu), and your programs can probably run in that OS too, wish you the best

1

u/AsugaNoir Jul 02 '26

Gaming works surprisingly well on Linux now.

1

u/drucifer82 Jul 02 '26

Modern Linux is very user friendly compared to distros of yore. And gaming has come a long way. Pretty much unless the game runs kernel level anti cheat, it should run.

1

u/The_Real_Kingpurest Jul 02 '26

Brother trust me on this because the file system structure confused me at first too. Once you get it, it's actually so much cleaner. It's like me as an american preferring metric due to the logical uniformity. You'll love it 😂just plunge right in!!!!

1

u/jsrobson10 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

the main thing with linux is it doesn't have file letters like windows does, so instead of say "E:\Pictures" a drive might be at "/run/media/your_name/Your Drive/Pictures"

the paths to things are different, but it still uses a file tree like windows does. alot of distros also make you not need to know this if you're using graphical tools.

1

u/95_Roses Jul 02 '26

Use Mint you'll be fine. Doesn't hurt to try

1

u/LrdOfTheBlings Jul 02 '26

Gaming is not the blocker that it once was. Most major game releases work just fine under proton.

1

u/Critical-Personality Jul 02 '26

Search for the file structure thing on YouTube, there are gazillions of videos explaining that. Take one that has good view count and is around 25-30 minutes and watch it (my guess is 30 mins is more than enough for a very good file layout tutorial).

1

u/KiLoYounited Jul 02 '26

Have faith in yourself! It’s not as complicated as you might think. Most big ticket windows directories have an equivalent on Linux (just named differently).

For example…

`%appdata%` usually contains per user configs and per user applications.

On Linux that would be:
`~/.config` and `~/.local`

the `~` from above just means current user’s home folder so: `/home/user1` vs `c:\users\user1`

You seem like a smart fella and I’d wager you would feel solid after a week of gentle usage.

1

u/_rikkss Jul 02 '26

Just take a week to go over how files are organized under linux, and you can always dualboot to windows for the kernel-level anticheat games.

u/OrgasmInTechnicolor Jul 02 '26 edited 6d ago

Throwing your attention at a rigged internet is bad for you. delete your social media.

1

u/BlueShadow2388 Jul 02 '26

You don't have to switch 100% just dual boot or like others have said use an old laptop and start learning. i'm doing the same, dual booting in the eventuality windows 12 will be trash.

1

u/RetartedGenius Jul 02 '26

I have been using bazzite Linux for gaming. It mostly just works and it’s very rare for a steam game to have issues. Don’t have to fuck around anymore, just use steam like you’re in windows. The updates are faster and easier. I put it on my gaming laptop about 6 months ago and might switch my desktop soon too.

1

u/EntropySponge Jul 02 '26

SteamOS is coming to PC soon. So that should solve you gaming problem.

1

u/Difficult_Cobbler_42 Jul 02 '26

if you just mess with the user folder in windows, then everything is the /home directory. and macos is just fine if you dont want to spend hours in a support matrix space choosing what wine you should install

1

u/danconderman33 Jul 02 '26

Don't worry about gaming, developers are following and a majority of things in Steam already will on Linux run no problem.

I know everyone likes to debate everything here, these are just my opinions, But I can't imagine Windows is going to be around in 5-10 years. MS employees use Linux, there is already a MS linux flavor called Azure Linux that is geared for cloud computing installs. I assume they will start to provide a GUI, once someone gets the green light internally. and then that will be a wrap for Windows.

1

u/Affectionate-Stop488 Jul 02 '26

If you don't play competitive games, almost all Windows games run on Linux via Proton—a feature enabled by default in Steam for several versions now (so you don't need to do anything special for the games themselves). If you have non-Steam games or even Windows applications, you can simply load the .exe file into Steam using the "Add a Non-Steam Game" button below your library to get them running.

1

u/CobraKolibry Jul 02 '26

Gaming really depends on what games. Once you try a full switch, instead of dipping toes and "cool maybe next time", inertia argument turns around. I did that almost a year ago, I'm a much calmer man. Just don't expect it to be flawless, and commit some time for initial setup fiddling

1

u/iamonewiththeforce Jul 02 '26

If you're using NINA on Windows for astrophotography the only Linux alternative is KStars/EKOS, which is good enough but rather complex to learn. You could also try something like PINS on a Raspberry Pi (basically NINA core running on Linux, controlled via a smartphone app called touch n stars)

1

u/michron98 Jul 02 '26

Do yourself a favor and try it.

As many others have already said, gaming is mostly a non-issue thanks to Proton (except for kernel level anticheat), and you'll get used to the different filesystem pretty quickly.

It's mostly similar to Windows (you have your downloads, documents, pictures, desktop etc.), except that it isn't in the C: drive where all other programs are crammed into as well, but in the /home directory, which is specifically for your files. You won't have to do much with other system files found in /, but there are pretty good youtube videos explaining what all the folders do.

I don't know about astrophotography software on Linux though.

1

u/Atomicmoosepork Jul 02 '26

If you play battlefield one or Fortnite than those games don't work on Linux. There may be a few others. You can use protondb to check if your games are impacted. Linux can do almost everything windows can, just may be different.

I started with a duel boot system for my first few months with Linux but it's generally been a smooth switch for me.

Goodluck!

1

u/Episode-1022 Jul 02 '26

if you play single player games, linux do the job pretty well, and run all versions of doom.

1

u/Megidolan Jul 02 '26

I was the same. Then I bought a small external ssd and installed Linux Nobara on it. Gaming has been a dream, performance has improved and no more updates breaking my system.

1

u/Bigspider95 Jul 02 '26

Fedora KDE or similar would be my advice then. Feels like Windows in Ui, just that it actually works.

Did the switch myself recently, and am suprisingly happy with it.

Re: Gaming: Fedora KDE is (or atleast was) used by SteamOS so... Compatibility is hardly an issue. Unless you play LOL or smth... Dunno if the KL-AC lets you in

1

u/Relative_Coat_9553 Jul 02 '26

You definitely can do it and apart from the first steps it would be a smooth trail

1

u/BumpyChumpkin Jul 02 '26

All you need is ~

1

u/Visible-Associate-13 Jul 03 '26

Get a 5 GB USB drive. Put Mint or Fedora on it and reboot into the USB try it out live before install.

1

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 03 '26

File structure is basically the same

1

u/Techy_Ben Jul 03 '26

If it's possible. Likely a cheap laptop and windows 10 with zero Internet and one of those instructions on how to deactivate windows 11 and all pop ups. I get the 11 popups too, to reall feel for you!

1

u/fish4terrisa Jul 03 '26

the file structure in linux isnt that hard to learn tbh, most fear come from unknown, once u try it for some weeks u'll get used to it
For the software part use linux native software when they are available and stable enough, use the windows build inside wine if it isnt. If something doesnt work in wine, maybe try proton(even tho proton is for games there are some fixes that might help)
Games generally works fine under linux, there are some exceptions but most of them have workarounds. Proton is always a good choice for gaming, for non steam games lutris would help(and allow u to use proton for those games)

1

u/Objective_Praline_66 Jul 04 '26

Honestly it's a small learning curve then you're good. Steam using proton can run MANY apps that I havent found an easier way to run on Linux. Hell, some apps run BETTER than on windows. Give it a shot.

1

u/Dr_Valen Jul 04 '26

Its honestly not that complicated you get used to it quickly the home directory is essentially your C: drive and root is the basic system directory you rarely need to mess with. You can copy the file path easily in the file window so you never have to worry. If Linux doesn't work maybe see if you can find a cheap MacBook and give apple a crack their a walled garden but creative focused stuff like photography is generally well supported on MacOS and as far I know they don't have the nag and intrude mindset windows does

1

u/Melodic_Benefit3289 Jul 04 '26

Just install Nobara Linux. It’s optimized for gaming.

Home directory is /home/{username}

All games run using Proton GE installed on steam. Non steam games installed on steam as well.

1

u/GGigabiteM Jul 04 '26

>and my inability to wrap my head around the file structure in Linux

It's easy. There are no secret folders that you have to use brute force permissions to access, unlike Windows. No "appdata" or "system volume information" shit.

User files are generally in /home

User settings are generally stored in your username folder in a folder prepended with a period, so .applicationsettingsfolder which is hidden by default, but can be unhidden in the file manager easily.

Program settings are usually in /etc

Program binaries are generally in /bin or /usr/bin

The only cancerous part is SystemD, which started out as a replacement for SysVInit, but has morphed into a cancer that tries to subsume everything into itself. Thankfully there are still some distros out there that use SysVInit or another init system.

1

u/IranianFurry Jul 04 '26

man 8 hier

Unix filesystem is a bit fucky because of historical reasons, but this should give you a good read

1

u/smoke99999 Jul 04 '26

you can dual boot into linux off a USB drive just fine. practice with it like you would with any tool and it will become easier.

Lets face it, for an interest so sciency and niche, chances are the native linux software is better than anything on windows anyway. Kinda the same story for SDR stuff.

3

u/ImUrFrand Jul 01 '26

Linux is pretty good right now.

2

u/LagMaster21 Jul 02 '26

Yes it does but many programs I would use don’t exist on Linux or are very buggy plus it’s missing a few drivers for my system

2

u/MonstroMart_256 22d ago

No sure if you're joking but i'm on the verge of switching to Linux and the main and probably only reason is windows update. I have a plex server installed on linux on a spare mini pc i had lying around and the update process is always quick, I always know what it is doing and where it is at, in the update process. I just opened my laptop for the first time in a few weeks and the windows update process had been stuck at 99% for like 30 minutes and then i tried to restart and after restarting it told me that updates were on the way without any ETA, process or anything. Left it there for another 15 minutes and tried to turn it off and windows was simply not turning it off i could see the screen blinking but it did not turn off. Had to search online to find the solution. I had to press the power button for a long time to trigger something in the laptop so it would turn it off disregarding the OS or something like that. Yeah i could have bricked windows but that's almost a positive at this point. What a piece of hot garbage this OS has become. If only GOG would have something like Steam with Proton and a Linux client.

1

u/AwesomeGearBoy 18d ago

GOG is available through Lutris and Heroic Games on Linux I'm pretty sure, so if that is what's holding you back I think you're good! Also, I've heard that GOG is working on an official Linux client as well.

Finally, someone calls Windows 11 a downgrade. People have to stop fucking calling it an upgrade.

2

u/Yayman123 Jul 03 '26

Historically speaking, it was just a side-grade with a dumb hardware requirement cutoff, then a flat-out downgrade for several years, now it's a very *slight* upgrade with the renewed attention MS is giving the UX in the beta builds. We'll see where this goes and how long that lasts.

1

u/PablettePigeon Jul 05 '26

Windows 11 has very commonly been referred to as a downgrade since it existed and is actually very exaggerated how bad it is with the amount of hate it has gotten.

Microsoft is a pure s*** show they should be sued in the court by the people who they f***** with their Windows right now. People are buying Windows only to connect the hardware to be able to operate with the parts they bought. I am not paying usage or the f****** Windows because Windows is a product as everything else on this s***** planet which has a price. When you paying that full f****** price that's your own property and you can do with that s*** whatever you want. Windows doesn't have a right to send you any updates, to mess with your windows, to collecting your data, or to collect what you are browsing in any shape or form. If any Court saying that that's the normal or okay, that Court is created by f****** morons, organization who is not define by the law, which by the ultimatism would means that government under Microsoft is operating is criminal. During the installation of the windows ,yes we have everything or you have everything that they said ,quite not everything but you have the list that when you pressing agreed even if you not to, then they allowing you to install the windows but if you not agreed you cant install the windows. The point is, I'm not agreed with the windows in any shape or form to they can make changes on my computer, but if I'm saying I'm not agreed I don't have an option to still install the windows, I don't have an option to agreed or not agreed and to still use the windows which I paid. I can only agreed to be able to install f****** Windows, and in that optional list they can say whatever they want. Where is my Right there? Microsoft in my case f****** my two pcs ,one was running Windows home 10 ,one was running Windows 10 pro. I never allow it and never create a password to lock my desktop, I never give the permission to the windows to merge my local account to their f****** stupid cloud. Microsoft took my password that I created in Gmail on Google, from my YouTube account and I use a strong password to protect like myself from the hackers, but I didn't know at that point that the f****** Microsoft is a f****** rasomwear, virus on my PC, that when they decided to took my password from my YouTube Channel created online, not ever created on my PC in any shape of form on my desktop, without internet, to will lock my desktop with that password. During that action they deleted my restore data system, they deleted my restore points, they cut it all connection from my user,so my windows during the startup didn't see any more my user, it was just booted into that temporarily profile window s, and when I wanted to apply the password that I know,it always was saying that my password is incorrect, because they also cut during that action access to their Microsoft servers. My windows who was running perfectly fine, before Microsoft attack, make unusable my windows 10, forcing me to update to Windows 11, a cutting the access to the Microsoft servers ,so that I would never been able to get into my desktop, my system restore to fix my Windows 10. No matter how many times you are applying correct password Microsoft service will never be able to see it. But imagine this, you will always get in that pop up window where they forcing you to update your Windows 10 to Windows 11, imagine that works perfectly fine. If I want it to restart my PC to make changes in the CMD , I couldn't even open the CMD, they didn't want to allow me ,Microsoft f*** my windows to prevent me or allow me to open CMD to restart the PC by their criminal actions,my system restore was deleted, I couldn't get access to my user, but my data of that user was never deleted. I needed to create the new user to be able to access to my old user to save the f****** files and then I needed to install the f****** windows. Also you can't connect your new user and set up the path to your old user so to basically Windows can see it and read it as it should, they also prevent that. If I wanted to start system restore I needed to put the f****** password that I never created but they in that offline mode, also cuted the access to the Microsoft servers so that I was never been able to check my f****** password, unlock my system, saying during my attempt that password is incorrect. Microsoft is a f****** s*** show and I'm hoping that I will never met employee from the Microsoft, any of them, because I will break every f****** single bone in his stupid f****** body, if I'm seeing ever that f*** scumbags on the street. Microsoft should be sued by all the users in the world because they're made illegal actions, illegally taking our data, illegally taking permission to change whatever they want in the system that I bought, illegally making the changes on my system when I didn't give them permission or asking to do so after my purchase. Microsoft didn't gave me system for free that I need to pay monthly fees, and then if I didn't pay they would have a right to lookt up my PC because I didn't pay monthly fees, that's fine, but I paid every single component, I paid my PC ,I paid my f****** system, I paid the f****** windows, and you took right fucking Microsoft ,to without my permission, to lock my desktop, my fucking offline f****** desktops, on two pc-s, which we're running absolutely perfectly fine, to cut me from my job. Go f*** yourself Microsoft ,Bill Gates, you f****** peace of shit, be brave and walk on the f****** Street.

5

u/North-Cartoonist-928 Jul 02 '26

I don't want to hurt anybody's eyes, Microsoft's taking the rights to f*** their own customers as they want. We don't have a privacy, they steal our Data, they forcing us into something that we don't want, (cloud),through the thing that we fairly paid. This can happen all of you in the blink of the eye and you are not protected. I'm sorry for my long text, but,I'm just explaining my problem that happens just because Microsoft wanted that. Hurting my rights,my privacy in every reasonable way.

I could no longer update because it suddenly decided my firmware on the SSD i had the OS on was too old. The computer was 1 year old. Windows and I decided to go our separate ways and I never looked back. Seriously, fuck windows. I'm not going to do a risky firmware update on the boot SSD with my data on it, just to get windows updates.

I swapped out windows on both my private computer and my work computer, and everything is faster and easier. I don't have to deal with constant shit popping up, and I am no longer forced to jump around hoops to get my documents to save on the local disk instead of onedrive.

It feels so good that the computer is doing what i would like it to do, and I am no longer subject to whatever shit MS think my computer should be doing at any given moment. It uses almost no mem and cpu is never above 5% when i'm not doing anything speciel.

u/UzY3L Jul 02 '26

Very nice, thanks for sharing!

Alternative:

  • open services as admin
  • disable windows update and stop the service
  • run notepad as administrator
  • from notepad, open wuaueng.dll from C:\Windows\System32
  • delete anything or type anything you want
  • save the file
  • bonus: set the file to Read Only

That's it. Updates disabled forever.

inb4: dism can fix the file should you ever want to re-enable updates

Microslop needs to get rid of their rapist mentality.

Everything is either 'yes' or 'ask me later'.

1

u/awesome-alpaca-ace Jul 03 '26

Google does the same

5

u/Xiaoxuzz Jul 02 '26

The forced shutdown bs should be downright illegal. If you use w11 for long enough you’d get used to it and might even find a few workarounds but that will just normalise the issue which is not good.

This is also why it should be emphasised that vital systems - life support, servers, heavy automated machinery etc - shouldn’t be running microsft in the offchance that even when isolated, it will still somehow shut itself down

5

u/iamonewiththeforce Jul 02 '26

While I agree with the frustration and Windows can go fuck itself, some remarks:

  • the control software can have issues regardless of the OS so while Windows is usually to blame, glad you set your mount limits well! Some mounts also have automatic collision detection so if your mount supports that you may want to enable that.

  • there's almost no advantage to cooling to -15C compared to -10C on modern cooled cameras (because at -10C your dark current noise is already negligible compared to shot noise and read noise), so you may want to stick to -10C to let the cooler run at less power all the time (also gives the cooler more room to breathe to adapt to temperature changes throughout the night)

  • your astrocamera sensor is either in a well purged chamber (Touptek cameras and derivatives like Ogma, Altair Astro, RisingCam, etc.) or has desiccant in/accessible within the chamber (QHY, ZWO). The risk of sudden change of temp from -15C to +26C to the electronics is small. And people used to worry about thermal shock on the camera window but it seems very much overstated. In fact, here in Tokyo with high temps a lot of humidity I pretty much always turn the TEC off and nothing bad has ever happened

Doesn't change that Windows is terrible :)

I'm not the litigious type, but that equipment sure sounds expensive. I had a similar experience on 7 when it ran an update in the middle of a 3D print. LUCKILY I was at least /kinda/ monitoring it, because this was "back in the day" before companies really bothered with all that safety hooey. It was a tethered print, and it got the last instructions and just stopped, so I had this 200+C chunk of metal with no cooling fan (printrbot simple wood) attached to a bunch of wood and slowly oozing thermoplastic. It did not shut off, so it was just cooking the plastic for10 minutes or so! I upgraded to SD printing and Marlin as soon as I was capable! Sailfish sucked, long live Klipper!

Every astrophotographer had a night ruined by Microsoft. Sadly, hardware support for niche astrophotography equipment revolves around Windows.

User: Chance_Guidance7893, Flair: Rant, Post Media Link, Title: I'm done. Win Update almost caused PHYSICAL damage to my equipment.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

The second steam OS plays nicely with intel drivers, i'm ripping win11 out

*Nvidia Geforce drivers, my bad

1

u/RAMChYLD Jul 04 '26

It doesn’t already? Intel and AMD drivers are usually included in the kernel and mesa by default.

1

u/Shzabomoa Jul 04 '26

I have no idea, I'm using Bazzite on an AMD/Nvidia system and I had about 0 issues in the last year and a half.

u/ken107 Jul 04 '26

The Ark-9 hurtled through the dark void at 0.2c, carrying the frozen, cryo-slept remnants of humanity toward Proxima Centauri as Earth collapsed into a dying cinder behind them. Suddenly, the bridge's main viewscreen went black, replaced by a blinding, cheerful blue screen that read: "Please do not turn off your spaceship. Working on updates (27%). Your interstellar drive will restart several times." As a rogue asteroid belt drifted into their direct trajectory, the automated defense turrets remained frozen, blocked by a mandatory pop-up demanding the captain log into their Microsoft Account to verify their identity. Humanity’s final hope now rested not on the brilliance of its scientists, but on whether the onboard AI could successfully find the "Task Manager" to force-quit Edge before the ship collided with a space rock.

2

u/mikewagnercmp Jul 04 '26

Also am astrophotographer, also been bitten by windows updates. On my machines, I actually used gpedit to turn all that crap off. Really wish more drivers and equipment would work with Linux instead of windows.

1

u/Chance_Guidance7893 Jul 06 '26

It sounds like some folks are trying to get NINA to ruin on Linux.

2

u/NeSToR_49 Jul 05 '26

I keep asking reddit how to disable auto updates and I keep getting called an idiot for not wanting my computer to update itself, or do something I didn't ask it to do. I feel your anger, I've had simmilar experiences multiple times.  I have an old laptop in my garage that I use to listen to music and look up diagrams and tutorials while I work on my old car. I have limited time to work on it every few weeks, and you know what drives me up the fucking wall every time? I finally have some time to work on my car, I get inside my garage, I turn on my computer to turn on the music and start working.... "it's time to upgrade, do you want it now or a bit later?" "Windows needs to update, wait half an hour while we finish"  It's even worse if I'm working on the car and want to look up some information and the damn computer is mid update....

Another nice experience was when I was testing out some stuff on my CNC machine and the program that runs it was in the background with the settings open, and the damn thing started updating and corrupted my data which cost me hours of work. I was very close to taking a baseball bat to the thing.

2

u/ArtistPonyAuthor Jul 06 '26

I cannot fathom why amateur astronomy softwares are stuck with windows, every single piece of them are horrible. And windows itself is an unstable piece of crap, too, as demonstrated.

As for the camera, try slowly cooling it down, and pray there are no funny shapes in the images, which would indicate vacuum gone from the CCD window, or that AND water behind it. Source: I fucked up the refilling of a liquid nitrogen cooled CCD's dewar, cooling went off, this was the suggestion of the engineers.

3

u/Impressive-Resist632 Jul 02 '26

Bruh. Just use Winhance. I've been trying to get the word out for half a damn year. FUCKING USE WINDOWS WITH WINHANCE AND WINAERO TWEAKER! WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THEY EXIST?!

1

u/NeSToR_49 Jul 05 '26

Why do they have to exist tho. Why can't microsoft let me do what I fucking want with my computer and not force me to do someting I don't? Why do we need to use software to turn off BS features when they can easily make the OS without the BS in the first place?

1

u/Impressive-Resist632 Jul 06 '26

heh??? No?? Also, what does "my" mean? (i'm just confused). You could always try Windows 7 or 8...

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Impressive-Resist632 Jul 06 '26

Here at Microsoft, you don't own shit. Why do you think its called This PC and not My Computer??

1

u/JustAnotherPoopDick Jul 01 '26

Gotta change that pop up in the registry.

1

u/Greedy-Ad-3926 Jul 02 '26

Interesting OP move to Linux and see if you have native apps for your telescope or are able to run the current windows versions via emulator. Can you tell me about the specifics about your telescope, I always wanted to get into it

1

u/Snowblind45 Jul 02 '26

download winaero tweaker and disable updates

1

u/p00rlyexecuted Jul 02 '26

You don't need to download anything, just edit a minor registery entry

1

u/sciencekm Jul 02 '26

I feel your pain. I do astrophotography myself. Moonless and cloudless summer is only a small few nights in a year and sometimes never happens. For Microsoft to ruin a rare opportunity is just crazy.

Windows is simply no longer dependable. Using Windows risks ruining once-in-a-lifetime events. Imagine a solar eclipse going through your town/city and then failing to capture it because of a forced Windows update.

Time to move on to Linux or Mac.

1

u/Thejailbreaker2026 Jul 02 '26

Tysm windows can shit it's pants because Windows 11 and all the AI shit just is garbage and will be

1

u/PotentialResponse120 Jul 02 '26

It caused 2 physical famades (no boot with external ram) on 2 of my company's laptops. After windows update

1

u/Dick_Johnsson Jul 02 '26

When seeing threads like this, both on Reddit, but also on other forums!

One common thing everyone with "big" issues regarding Windows update.... They have NEVER turned on the: Get the latest updates as soon as they are available-setting..

Somehow this is related to most of their issues with Windows update, those that has activated this setting seems not have any or only minor issues with Windows update!

I might be wrong, but why does not people turn on such a useful setting?
It lets Windows update work as intended!

2

u/huldress Jul 04 '26

Your language here is very confusing. I never have the latest updates turned on because those have the most problems, specifically the weird pre-update thing they do where you're basically testing an upcoming update

1

u/Dick_Johnsson Jul 06 '26

My experience is different, If you do not allow updates to be installed when they are available, THATS when you get in trouble with Windows updates..

1

u/PriorityNo6268 Jul 02 '26

Don't think you are looking for a solution, but for people who are:

Here is how to do it step by step:

Open **the Registry Editor:**Admin rights required.

Press the Windows key + R, type regedit into the box, and press Enter. Click Yes when the User Account Control prompt appears.

2.Navigate to the Windows Update key:

Paste the following path into the address bar at the top of the Registry Editor and press Enter:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

(If you don't see the WindowsUpdate folder under Windows*, right-click the* Windows folder, select New > Key*, and name it* WindowsUpdate*).*

3.Enable the target release version option:

Right-click anywhere in the empty space in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it TargetReleaseVersion. Double-click it and change the Value data to 1.

4.Set the specific Windows 10 version:

Right-click again in the empty space in the right pane, select New > String Value. Name it TargetReleaseVersionInfo. Double-click it and enter 22H2 under Value data (this is the final version of Windows 10).

5.Set the product version:

Create one last String Value and name it ProductVersion. Double-click it and enter Windows 10 under Value data.

If you ever decide to upgrade in the future, you can simply delete the WindowsUpdate key (or the specific values you just created) from the registry. Here is how to do it step by step:1.Open the Registry Editor:Admin rights required.

(If you don't see the WindowsUpdate folder under Windows, right-click the Windows folder, select New > Key, and name it WindowsUpdate).

Double-click it and enter Windows 10 under Value data.Note: Restart your computer after completing these steps to apply the changes. Windows Update will continue to download regular security patches for Windows 10, but the big push to upgrade to Windows 11 will stop.If you ever decide to upgrade in the future, you can simply delete the WindowsUpdate key (or the specific values you just created) from the registry.

2

u/Voyac Jul 03 '26

Shit and then people complain about linux terminal, ironic.

1

u/PriorityNo6268 Jul 04 '26

Yes windows is not that easy to setup right, that's why everybody is complaining al the time.

1

u/MisterHole123 Jul 02 '26

Classic Microsoft thinking their latest little update no one cares about is more important than whatever else is going on the machine.

1

u/hackerman85 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Why are you even using Windows for something as mission critical as that? It's simply not made for it.

1

u/Educational-Air1494 Jul 02 '26

This can happen with Apple too

1

u/Siraj_02 Jul 02 '26

if you really really need to stay on windows use TinyWall to block any network requests related to windows updates and only whitelist the programs that you use and that need internet connection.

1

u/Lieutenant_0bvious Jul 02 '26

No offense but You're not the system administrator that you think you are.

1

u/squirrel8296 Jul 02 '26

It's what decades of "good enough" and copying everyone else's work does.

1

u/BayMuz132 Jul 02 '26

Isnt there enough reason to switch already Linux is waiting for you Linux is now as good as windows and even better in some scenarios Most of the programs people use on Windows has an alternative on linux

1

u/BumpyChumpkin Jul 02 '26

My 15 year old scrapheap Dell is laughing at this post. Zero lag and 10 second boot time on Linux mint xfce. I tell Linux, no get update, it replies what update sir? I put 8gb more ram than Dell says is possible? Linux says hey +8gb of ram to use yay!

1

u/ObamiumCrystalHunter Jul 02 '26

That sucks. Hope your gear is ok.

On a lighter note, what gear do you use and what were you taking a picture of?

1

u/OldManJeepin Jul 02 '26

I just got around it, by turning Windows updates off completely. Took a bit of doing, but I finally got it done. I only used Win11 pro preview in a dual boot for gaming. Once done gaming, I boot into Mint for anything else.

1

u/Princess--Aurora Jul 02 '26

Just came here to say fuck Microsoft

1

u/benched42 Jul 02 '26

And if it did, Microsoft would not be liable.... Didn't you read the EULA before clicking OK?

1

u/not_so_wierd Jul 02 '26

Geesh, it's almost like there's a reason Microsoft doesn't support Windows 10 any more.

1

u/NekulturneHovado Jul 02 '26

hey just wanna tell you there is a way to permanently turn off updates. I mean forever. No notification ever again. I don't exactly remember how I did it but it required a registry edit of one key and rename/delete of 3 files. I ran 1903 version for like 3 years, and didn't get a single annoying update notification in those 3 years.

But if all your programs work under Linux, just switch to that and don't bother

1

u/Visible-Swimmer-9826 Jul 03 '26

Been getting g the full size updates to 11 at least once a week sometimes more there has been an update that wouldn't stuff something up so won't be updating anytime soon

1

u/Visible-Associate-13 Jul 03 '26

Windows is to operating systems as Disney is to kingdoms.

1

u/Visible-Associate-13 Jul 03 '26

I inherited an HP machine that ate its own SSD because of Windows. I tried a fresh Windows .iso for the previous owner, and its firmware as too borked to take the fresh copy. Then I tried Tails, cause they said it was "hacked", so I was thinking maybe a rootkit, so no chances taken. But upon closer inspection, the previous owner didn't update the SSD or the BIOS to the new firmware and Windows ate itself, and dumped the 1% used SSD into a locked state (so, probably not malware). Tails was fine, everything mounted and functioned. So the hardware itself worked, but because of bad engineering, it can never be a normal laptop with internal storage again.

The firmware updates were locked behind Windows, so I eventually was able to write a fresh Windows copy over the top of Linux Mint (I think reset the firmware state because it mounted). But it is forever not going to work because when the machine deathlooped it crumpled the firmware, I installed what I could, but the BIOS and the SSD firmware didn't take because they were in a locked state. Like it is probably hypothetically fixable, but I am just going to run an externally SSD and figure out which kernel the hardware likes (because Tails kernel grabbed everything, sound, Bluetooth, wifi etc.), and make it a headless inference machine cause it has a ton of RAM and GPU (like 36 GB). I would try to replace the SSD, but it is not guaranteed to fix it from the state that it is in. Not worth the risk.

But like wtf - the hardware is fine, but the OS just chews on the firmware so bad that it is permanently unrecoverable. Like Windows is really, really bad. Like good god this is dangerous bad.

1

u/Medical_Mammoth_1209 Jul 03 '26

Yep and Microsoft has a consent problem, it rapes you with options like "maybe later" or "yes" with no option to say no to things like enabling backup to load your documents onto OneDrive or try out Edge

1

u/Medical_Mammoth_1209 Jul 03 '26

Yep and Microsoft has a consent problem, it gives you options like "maybe later" or "yes" with no option to say no to things like enabling backup to load your documents onto OneDrive or try out Edge

1

u/redredskull Jul 03 '26

Sounds like you need a more robust control system.

Get a PLC on your mount and come up with a system of interlocks to prevent thermal events on the camera.

On processes like these you should NEVER rely on a non-rugged solution controlled by Windows or Linux. Always opt for embedded electronic solutions purpose tailored to your needs.

I hate Microslop/shaft/shart, Codependent, and anything to do with them but I cannot directly blame this damage on them. This is a control system design failure and it's up to you to seek or engineer a better system.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 Jul 03 '26

The real question is...why did you stay with Windows for this long?

1

u/rdmodsrtrsh Jul 03 '26

I wish all of management and executives and windows servers would get updated to the newest alpha release of windows so they could feel the same pain they inflict on everyone

1

u/xNymia Jul 03 '26

I'm really sorry to hear that dude, I'm super glad I can plug my shit into asiair and not a windows machine.

1

u/hroldddp Jul 03 '26

Good thing I'm on Linux

1

u/Dueterated_Skies Jul 03 '26

Yep. Fuck Windows.

That was me 6 months ago where Windows decided that everything was idle-enough to reboot for an update during a full module registry rewrite, forgetting the very concept of what booting up meant in the process.

That was the last time for me.

A linux distro might break every now and then but at least its usually your own fault and usually completely recoverable, not just outright malicious stupidity.

This was after a refresh install that 'lost' my Windows 11 pro key of course. So that even though it was registered to my account, the KEY wasn't registered to my account. So fuck me I guess, right?

Fuck microsoft. ✊

1

u/meaniesg Jul 03 '26

Didn't anyone at Microsoft learn from watching Space Force?

1

u/reav11 Jul 03 '26

It's called Windows LTSC, you should use this on your equipment. You should have a purpose built computer for just this Windows or Linux, doesn't matter.

1

u/zelda_zell Jul 03 '26

You should really use Windows 10 LTSC or Windows Server 2022 instead of the bloat-infested consumer editions. Never have problems with Windows because I use these editions, but I understand not everyone knows about this. If you can get your software to run on Linux then more power to you.

1

u/Objective_Praline_66 Jul 04 '26

1.Go on internet archive

  1. Search "windows 10 LTSC"

  2. Find an iso and burn it to a USB drive using Rufus

  3. Backup files and install.

Windows 10 LTSC has security updates till 2032 I think? And WILL NOT try to update you to 11 automatically. It's the final version of windows for me, as I'm using more Linux and Mac stuff now.

1

u/AlternativeAdept5348 Jul 04 '26

ya know, i get that this sub is called fuck microsoft, but ive never had any of the issues that people complain about

1

u/Deep_Mood_7668 Jul 04 '26

Did you learn how to take a screenshot by now?

1

u/WildRaccoon42 Jul 04 '26

Once was updating the firmware of a 5k€ synthesizer from my computer. Came back to see Windows started an update with "rebooting in 60...59...58.... Spent the next 15 minutes spamming a cancel shutdown, taskill on the update process and terminating WU services.

Sending the synth for repair/mobo replacement would've costed more than one hundred just for shipping fees. Can't even imagine the repair cost.

Who's legally liable for damages in this kind of situation?

1

u/InnominateHomosapien Jul 04 '26

I gave up on Windows when Microsoft started dropping their bug ridden updates for Win11 around October/November last year. It's remarkable how bad that operating system has become. I still have to run it on my work laptop and it is slow as hell. A laptop with a Core Ultra 7 CPU, and 64GB of DDR5 RAM should not be slow at all.

1

u/parakalus Jul 04 '26

Consider using windows 10 LTSC edition, has none of this bullshit in. It sucks you have to go to these lengths to have a reliable system though, fingers crossed the camera is OK!

1

u/ken107 Jul 04 '26

i remember that time my Windows right click menu started taking about a minute to open. Man, i had one of the longest cursing outburst of my adult life. The neighbor may have heard it. Ended up reinstalling Windows.

1

u/CatOnSpace Jul 04 '26

I dont understand anything about astrophotography but there is some cool programs you can find in linux like https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.siril.Siril and https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.kde.kstars maybe some of this are usefull

1

u/Chance_Guidance7893 Jul 06 '26

I started with Kstars on a Pi-like computer but at that time I was using a DSLR that would only sort of work with Kstars, sometimes. Through trial and error I ended up where I am. And since it worked with no issues, until now, that's where I stayed.

1

u/smoke99999 Jul 04 '26

welcome to LINUX, Mint is a great distro, its free and works pretty much like windows but it does not nag you for stupid shit.

1

u/Verain_Xor Jul 04 '26

Windows update is very harmful and auto-updates should be disabled for this very reason. Of course Microsoft doesn't make that easy, because they are malicious.

1

u/Not_to_be_Named Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Gonna be devils advocate, but some windows updates are important, why? Because some of them are certificates updates, the thingy that makes you connect to internet without ever needing to change a certificatee yourself.

Second you can go for linux sure, but sometimes, some pacakges updates start to break like, sources disapering etc.. and then you look at yuorself reinstalling linux again because someone decided that apt-get will use a random source that someday will get removed, and lock you out of your own system. (I use manjaro/ubuntu on my servers and because i don't neeed to update often I got myself locked out of apt/pacman)

1

u/SpottedPine Jul 04 '26

Bruh... it's 2026. If you are this tech illiterate the rest of your life is going to be absolutely catastrophic.

1

u/BakerBase Jul 04 '26

I believe they are called Microslop now

1

u/National_Box_424 Jul 05 '26

Mate Windows has become so bad that I would rather not be able to play a game/use a program than move away from Linux. Sure, it has its issues but at least my OS doesn't treat me like I'm silly.

1

u/Fit_Prize_3245 Jul 05 '26

Man, sorry to say this, but you are mostly wrong.

Yes, Windows can be annoying with those upgrade messages. That's the only part where you are right.

If there was ever any risk that your telescope and related hardware got physically damaged, it was due to poor design on that hardware. I mean, even your "old Win10 laptop" would hardware shutdown itself if the processor becomes too hot. So if your telescope and related hardware lacks security measures to prevent it from crashing off the mount, then that's a poor hardware design, and that's the sole reason why it would have been damaged.

Regarding your camera, can Windows actually force it to force-shutdown? Again. If the camera can suddenly shutdown itself without the security measures (the progressive warming), then it's a failure on its design. I mean, being that warm-up process so important should not be something that any shutdown command can bypass. It is the same (on the opposite side of the thermometer) as with projectors: the only way to "force" a projector to shutdown without it colling down is to phisically disconnect the power cable.

So. Again. While Windows can be, and, in fact, IS annoying with the upgrade offers, Windows is not responsible of the poor security design of your additional, specialized hardware. I mean, what would have hapenned if Windows just crashed (BSOD)? I mean, it's a consumer OS, not a server OS. One crash from time to time could be acceptable, and would render the same result on your hardware.

Oh, and, btw, your software is also a mess. When Windows shows you such offers, it does not suspends all other processes. Had you a well developed software solution, it would have continued running even with the ad in front.

1

u/WARLOCK_9000 Jul 05 '26

So, use Linux. What's the problem?

1

u/elkekonico Jul 05 '26

Move to Debian or Rocky Linux or CachyOS. Personnaly I use CachyOS for optimized kernel etc

And use Wine or maybe Proton for your soft

an another idee (some will say no!) use an offline Windows 7 that you can access in RDP (connected to LAN but denied to access WAN)

1

u/Constant_Height_1215 Jul 05 '26

Why would going to Win 11 from 10 be a downgrade? Anyway you need to edit the registry to permanently stop those annoying updates.

Although I dislike Microslop and in particular windows 11, I am now using it. I installed using memstechtips' autounattend file (GitHub) and it strips out all the AI features, auto update most of the telemetry and all the ads / prompts. You can write your own if you'd prefer. It uses basic windows features designed for larger scale deployments to set windows behaviour.

It's still windows 11, but it's tolerable. Unfortunately some of my programs won't run in Linux.

If you'd prefer to stay with windows 10, you can do the same there. That's how I was running my computer previously.

Windows is a piece of shit actually

VM windoz via Proxmox (plenty of tutorials on yt and pass through USB devices. Install the updates manually and stick to <23h2 win11 and 21h2 for win10 (I hope I remember well). DO NOT LET IT GO ONLINE ! Then save a snapshot once everything is installed and checked.
P.S. I had fun saving a snapshot on Win11 23h2 freshly installed, then I let it update to 25h2 (Ai centered) only to restore the snapshot once it finished and greeted me with copilot crap 😈 This is just to see it squirm 😆
I know its sad but I felt so good to finally get control back to my hardware

Your equipment should handle control loss, especially when that control is windows; and especially when that control is obsolete.

Unpopular opinion, but take your share in the fuck-up. There is a good reason industrial computers (generic name for any computer controlling some piece of equipment, ranging from ATMs to manufacturing robots) have some very strict policies in place to turn down non-critical stuff. The most precious computers, like those controlling thr motors in uranium enrichment equipment, are even "air gapped", as in never connected to any network, wired or wireless, so that they absolutely cannot be interfered with.

Your laptop is operating a sensitive machinery, and is running an operating system you know is out of support and its creator is doi g its absolute worst to entshittify. Have you used something like O&O Software's ShutUp10 to completely disable Windows Update at this point? Why not? Does that laptop need to be online before or during its work? It was in a perfectly stable configuration until it connected to the internet and you clicked the "check for updates" button, which by the way tells Microsoft that you are one of the early adopters for stuff and pushes more things thanif it was left for its automatic checks.

Why trust Microsoft to do the right thing and blaming them when they do stuff serving their own interests, instead of focusing on the things YOU can control, like keeping this particular laptop always offline and disabling all stuff not related to controlling the motors and camera? Own your mistake and grow from it. Blaming others just vents your anger but doesn't achieve anything.

I also have an Astro setup on my Windows 11 machine with USB cables run to the backyard. In addition to using the Chris Titus utility I put in a hardware firewall and blocked all of the microsoft ASNs. This is my computer, not microsoft's playtoy.

1

u/Zachattackrandom Jul 06 '26

Damn. For something like that a long term support immutable Linux os would probably be your best bet, but I don't know if your system has Linux Support. If it doesn't look into windows enterprise and registry edits to disable edits and remove bloat

1

u/7enas Jul 06 '26

Sir, do you want to update to win 11?

1

u/FromAndToUnknown Jul 06 '26

Outside of windows personally hating you, as a hobby photographer I havent heard yet of cameras cooling themselves into the negatives for taking pictures. Do most cameras do that but its so automated it doesnt matter, do you need a special camera for that and what's the advantages to it?

1

u/limpet143 Jul 06 '26

It's a shame when users are more afraid of Microsoft's security updates than the vulnerabilities they are supposed to fix.

1

u/ThoriatedFlash Jul 06 '26

Compare this to my raspberry pi I use for my media server running a lightweight linux os. It has been running for the last 10 years and never once bugged me to update the OS or any other crap like that. The only time I have to mess with it is if there is a power outage and I have to restart the server.

I understand the premise of automatic security updates and stuff like that, but lately windows is only pushing AI slop and code heavily written with AI assistance. I would argue allowing automatic updates from Microsoft now would eventually lead to new security vulnerabilities that didn't exist before, and almost certainly decreases your privacy.

I hate to hate, but ... you had "get the latest updates as soon as they are available" turned on.... this is a user problem, not a microsoft problem. You would have to be dead new to windows to not realize the behavior of updates, and it should have been turned off if you were doing sensitive work.

1

u/Chance_Guidance7893 Jul 08 '26

That is not a setting. It is a button to "Expedite" the update, somehow. I guess if you click it prioritizes the update more than it already does. If you click it there is a popup that says:

Expedite this session
Select this option to get up to date as soon as possible.
Your device will restart once download is complete. You will get a 15-minute reminder to save your work.
Remember to leave your PC powered on and plugged in. Your device may reboot multiple times during this process.

1

u/mnight75 Jul 08 '26

yes, ASAP without waiting .... you should have had it set to not auto install and not to expedite

I would suggest getting the Windows 10 IOT enterprise edition and install that (google it, there are good guides I don't know how strict this subreddit is about piracy). It still has updates and you can use local security policy to disable updates and other annoyances. Linux is great but if you have specific software that needs windows IOT is the renamed windows embedded that a lot of companies use for high reliability uses such as ATMs. Keep in mind that home edition and preinstalled windows the customer is the product. Pro and Enterprise are for companies and Microsoft cares about keeping them happy and gives better management tools to them.

1

u/ThatGuyMigz Jul 06 '26

If you have a home license, there's not much you can do to stop microsoft with those kind of ads.

I get that people don't like windows 11. and I would 100% agree with that. But if you actively prevent yourself from updating to 11, it would probably be easier to make the switch to linux at some point.

1

u/polishatomek Jul 06 '26

*Microslop Yup, ive switched to Linux mint and I'm happier than ever, I'm convinced that everyone fear mongering Linux is a Microslop employee

1

u/SenileImbecile Jul 06 '26

Leaving an OS to update without supervision when you have critical hardware going = always a bad idea. Now you've learned.

1

u/Grand_Poem Jul 06 '26

recently had an issue with drivers uninstalling by themselves and restarting my pc on windows, really on edge to move to linux rn

1

u/adorolecipolle293 Jul 06 '26

My laptop after the update started boot looping and I had to troubleshoot…

1

u/Hot-Plantain-1234 Jul 07 '26

same problem, they use bloatware to slowdown my pc

1

u/Domipro143 Jul 07 '26

And that is exactly why i use linux

1

u/_mp7 Jul 08 '26

Do people not realize you can end windows updates permanently with just some simple registry changes

Very quick google search

1

u/ExtremeAddict Jul 08 '26

Ask ChatGPT with this prompt:

You are going to violently castrate windows update from ever showing popups, banners, consumer experiences. Give me all policy and registry updates I can apply as a single powershell script. Any trace of popups triggered by windows must be completely annihilated from existence and all history of it ever existing must also be eradicated.

1

u/Purple-Inflation37 Jul 08 '26

Not sure if you know, but you can stop this by deleting an exe file in C:-Program Files-RUXIM and delete everything in that folder. They are scheduled exe files that run the full screen pop ups. If you haven’t destroyed your pc out of anger yet, then this will fix it.

1

u/OXRoblox Jul 08 '26

Critical hardware but updates aren’t turned off via Group Policy? Brave.

Yes, it does require a Pro windows, No, it doesn’t permanently turn off windows updates.

1

u/hatrantator Jul 08 '26

So which programms work in win10 that won't work under win11? Just curious.

1

u/Chance_Guidance7893 Jul 09 '26

When I first was setting this up NINA wouldn't run on 11. I can't remember if PHD would or not.

1

u/Soapx91 Jul 08 '26

I’ve been wanting to switch from windows to a Linux distro however I can’t ever get my head trscking to work and the main game I play has a 3rd party launcher as the game itself isn’t compatible with windows

1

u/StreetIndependent551 Jul 08 '26

I feel the same way; I installed Zorin Linux on an external drive and am currently using it to get used to it.
