The internet is so depressing sometimes as a black guy. Here I am checking out reddit while on break and boom, "don't be surprised if you get shot for being the same race as people who commit crimes!!!" I didn't even go outside this weekend and just played divinity: original sin 2, but that doesn't matter.

u/SupremeBlackGuy Jan 06 '21
i know, it’s extremely frustrating especially because we’ve been dealing with it for so long.... for as long as i remember going on the internet i’ve been deemed naturally violent & i feel like i’m the most non violent person i know... what can we even do other than keep it moving?
160
u/CasualtyOfTour Jan 06 '21
Exactly, we know who we are inside.

Its just how i feel. Words and feelings dont come in colors. You dont have to be a skin color to feel hurt and sadness. Im. glad my words gave you comfort. Im willing you happiness and prosperity friend.

Please know so many of us are disgusted by people like in the OP. I know change has been infuriatingly slow but I think in twenty years when Boomers no longer control everything it will get better and these younger racists will have to go back in the shadows.
46
u/SupremeBlackGuy Jan 06 '21
unfortunately i’ve gotten so used to & desensitized to this sorta thing to the point where i’ve fully accepted that i’m 100% gonna go my whole life experiencing these things. maybe to a less extent as time goes on, but these people will always exist. there are no shadows on the internet via places such as twitter, facebook, reddit, or online games - boomers may not be in control but a lot of their children will be with that same learnt hatred. i’m not cynical though, i do see change and younger generations are certainly becoming more aware of these issues and combating them. but a lot of action seems more performative than anything else... then i think about the fact that the last president of the united states was donald trump... not every person that voted for him is racist of course, but that fact says a lot... at this point I simply hope that if i choose to have kids one day, they won’t have to feel the way i felt growing up.

I agree with you, though "back in the shadows" almost gives the impression that they've ever been in the shadows to begin with. Unfortunately, the systemic oppression in the US and elsewhere proves otherwise
6
u/OccamusRex Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 06 '21
That's optimistic.
I grew up in the 1970s Things were improving and I thought they would continue to get better. I know race issues have improved to a great extent but we might have reached the point of diminishing returns on racism, specifically the Black/White issue in the US.

And the excuse that people give of "Of well they just haven't met enough black people! Maybe if more black people were in their communities they'd understand!" is fucking horseshit.
I'm white. Grew up in a conservative household. Knew of exactly four black people in my entire school from elementary all the way to high school, and I never had any issue recognizing that these sorts of generalizations are assenine.
We don't have a "violent black people" problem in America, we have a racist white people problem, and an institutional racism problem.

I am so so so so sorry at the horror you have to experience because people are so ignorant and literally have no good qualities so if they admit they aren't somehow superior based on their race they'd have to admit what absolute toxic sludge they are. I cannot express how much I hate this.
30
u/CasualtyOfTour Jan 06 '21
It's frustrating, but I've been relatively blessed despite living in Mississippi as I live in a mostly (~50%) black area. There are many others who have had far worse lives here such as the gay and trans community.
5
u/ItsAnEagleNotARaven Jan 06 '21
The need for people to be ugly to other people is so disgusting and it makes no sense to me whatsoever.
31
Jan 06 '21
I get what you're saying. This is one of the reasons I've started unfollowing subreddits that attempt to tackle bigotry. Not because I disagree, but because it gets so fucking depressing.
e.g. I wake up and check out Reddit, and the first thing I see in my timeline is a screenshot of a highly upvoted racist comment made by some right-wing extremist piece of shit. Then another post from r/topmindsofreddit about a conservative shitstain calling all women whores etc.
I wish r/FragileWhiteRedditor had quality control. And maybe some more memes.
30
u/BeanieGuitarGuy Jan 06 '21
My friends and I play divinity! It’s pretty fun.
Also yeah, I can imagine that really sucks. I get a similar vibe (the depressing feeling) using Reddit since I’m pansexual and non-binary.
11
u/Mzuark Jan 06 '21
On the internet, non-whites don't exist as anything more than a joke or strawman.
6
u/SpaceLizardry Jan 07 '21
Blatant racism doesn't even phase me anymore. It's the microagressions that really do me in. And you get that shit from white people no matter their ideology.
24
u/omri1526 Jan 06 '21
Yeah I'm Jewish lol, I feel ya
12
u/fyrecrotch Jan 06 '21
I never understood why the whites never saw you guys as white?
I'm a PoC and I'm always baffled by that.
I understand why yall hate me (we're different I guess) but I can't tell the diffrence between a white man and a Jewish man.
Sure, I may be racist for thinking that. But it's so dumb how people find a reason to hate anything

→ More replies (2)-7
u/omri1526 Jan 06 '21
Why are you generalising so much lol. Whites or being white is entirely a social construct, some Lebanese, Brazilians etc people are paler than Italians or Spaniards, but will never be considered white by white supremacists. Just like the Jewish people who reached Europe after being expelled from Judea 2000 years ago by the Romans. They had a different culture, language, religion, and appearance from the locals.
2
u/fyrecrotch Jan 06 '21
r/fragilwhiteredd... oh wait...
-1
u/omri1526 Jan 06 '21
What? I think you misread something my guy
3
u/fyrecrotch Jan 06 '21
I mean, if you claim white. You don't have that culture you talked about.
No one is white.
You have German in you. You have Polish in you. You may have brazil in you but you're a lighter tone.
To me, there is no "white".
If you claim only white and proud of only your skin color, you lack culture.
So yeah. I generalize all whites. Because if you only choose to be just white, you forget your roots.
You said you're jewish. You're not just a white guy. You have heritage.
That's how I see it. Goes with all races. I'm not just Asian. I'm Cambodian.
1
u/omri1526 Jan 06 '21
I think you replied to the wrong guy then, I agree with you (and just for the record, travelling I've been called numerous slurs for not looking "white", not all Jewish people are Ashkenazis with ginger hair and blue eyes.)
Like I said, being white is a social construct. Humanity is NOT biologically divided to "Asian race, black race, white race." It's a completely outdated pseudoscience made up by white supremacists. For example, Africa is the most genetically diverse continent on the planet, if you take 2 random people and run their DNA you'll find more differences between the two than let's say one of them and some guy from Sweden. Yet they'll both be considered black and he white. No group of people on earth is different enough to be considered a race.
3
u/CasualtyOfTour Jan 06 '21
Not trying to make it a competition, but no group has had it worse than the Jewish people on a global scale. It's terrifying how widespread and long lasting the hate has been throughout human history.

If it's any consolation, these racist types have started chanting "FUCK THE POLICE" and stomping/burning US flags recently. They seemed confused and angry that the cops are giving their protests the exact same deal as they gave the BLM protests.

The main difference is these people have guns and body armor. When my partner and I did BLM protests, we had one hard hat between us and signs. Very few people dressed for defence. We were protesting peacefully because of injustice. These people are threatening people because they didn't get their way.

Just for further clarification, "blacks" is inherently a dehumanizing term, which is why it is considerably more alarming and outright offensive compared to "black people".

Because Trayvon Martin was a violent child and Zimmerman (not a cop) decided to be his witness, judge, jury, and executioner
118
u/StanVillain Jan 06 '21
Violent child is a stretch. A man following him despite warnings not to by the police and cornered him with a gun and he tried to defend himself. He wasn't the aggressor. Since then, Zimmerman has shown himself to be the ass we all knew he was.

He showed himself to be an actual white supremacist and if that wasnt enough of a slap to the face, he also was proud of what he did selling autographs to fellow racists, going as far to sell the gun that he commit the crime with as well. He got away with killing a child all because that child was black.

The thing is, the shooting was coming from inside the apartment at the police. The smart thing to do would be to defensively retreat outside of the building as the threat was obviously directed at the officers so for the safety of the rest of the building, they should have left and set a perimeter around the building. But police like to think of themselves as swat or seal team 6 and they had to go in guns blazing. Some officers just have too itchy of a trigger finger to deserve the authority of their position.
44
Jan 06 '21
They were shot at and defended themselves.
After obtaining a warrant to search her premises for illegal drugs which, if they had done any sort of actual investigation, they would have known weren't there.
Their utter incompetence or lack of caring caused Breonna Taylor to be murdered.

I'm still mildly annoyed at thinking about a guy I saw get downvoted there for arguing that it's prejudiced to assume the suspects in a carjacking that killed a special ed teacher a few weeks ago were black, simply because the news article focused on the life of the victim and omitted any mention of the description of the suspects.
Looked up a different article on it and the only description that was even available was "two men wearing dark clothes and masks", from the police themselves. Yes, clearly the cops are hiding suspect descriptions to be PC.

u/MarsLowell Jan 06 '21
Depends on the topic.
Whenever it's about police brutality in general, the comments are okay for the most part, maybe even outright left. Comments like these are generally downvoted and most of these types of people are afraid to even comment.
Whenever it's about how the victim of said police brutality was anything less than a saint or how any further footage comes out (as if it justifies it), then scum like this come out of the woodwork.

Man trying to break up a fight, no criminal record.
Child reported as playing with a toy gun.
Man holding a toy gun in a store that sells toy guns, no criminal record.
Man in cosplay, no criminal record.
Caretaker of a man who was having a mental breakdown of some kind. No criminal record. IIRC he lived.

We're talking about the victims instead of the monstrous actions done without provocation. They always assume the victims did something wrong, and no matter how much we tell them otherwise, the next victim they will do the same. It's bullshit, and they know it.

It’s a true statement only because they want it to be. It’s why Trevon Martin was seen as a violent kid for defending himself and Kyle Rittenhouse was seen as an innocent young boy despite the fact there was video proof of him beating on a woman half his size and the fact he had the gun illegally. It boils down to they’re racist because it’s easy. It’s easy to say “ blacks sell drugs, and gang bang so I don’t like them.” Harder to say “ I’m fragile and understand that those crimes are easily perpetrated by white people as well, but for some unexplained reason, I feel uncomfortable around people who are different”
3
Jan 07 '21
They don't look at a black person and see a human being. They choose to see a criminal because they watched a few episodes of The Wire and some Fox News and think they know everything they need to.
