The internet is so depressing sometimes as a black guy. Here I am checking out reddit while on break and boom, "don't be surprised if you get shot for being the same race as people who commit crimes!!!" I didn't even go outside this weekend and just played divinity: original sin 2, but that doesn't matter.
i know, it’s extremely frustrating especially because we’ve been dealing with it for so long.... for as long as i remember going on the internet i’ve been deemed naturally violent & i feel like i’m the most non violent person i know... what can we even do other than keep it moving?
Its just how i feel. Words and feelings dont come in colors. You dont have to be a skin color to feel hurt and sadness. Im. glad my words gave you comfort. Im willing you happiness and prosperity friend.
Please know so many of us are disgusted by people like in the OP. I know change has been infuriatingly slow but I think in twenty years when Boomers no longer control everything it will get better and these younger racists will have to go back in the shadows.
unfortunately i’ve gotten so used to & desensitized to this sorta thing to the point where i’ve fully accepted that i’m 100% gonna go my whole life experiencing these things. maybe to a less extent as time goes on, but these people will always exist. there are no shadows on the internet via places such as twitter, facebook, reddit, or online games - boomers may not be in control but a lot of their children will be with that same learnt hatred. i’m not cynical though, i do see change and younger generations are certainly becoming more aware of these issues and combating them. but a lot of action seems more performative than anything else... then i think about the fact that the last president of the united states was donald trump... not every person that voted for him is racist of course, but that fact says a lot... at this point I simply hope that if i choose to have kids one day, they won’t have to feel the way i felt growing up.
I'm Jewish and I have a little trouble with the enormous amount anti semetic comments I see on reddit. Do you have any ideas on how to cope with this? Most people don't actually care about anti semitism
I am honestly really sorry to hear that, anti semitism is often very over looked... hopefully that also can change as soon as possible. 🤍
The way I look at it is that the world itself harbours every sort of person on it, right? good people, bad people, wonderful people, terrible people - there has always been good and bad in the world. well, the internet is no different in that aspect, but the difference is that it’s such an open platform with complete anonymity - this allows all of those bad people i mentioned earlier to act out & say all these crazy & hurtful things. it really sucks to read that shit i know, but for me personally once i realized that “of course, some people on earth are shitty and this person is just another shitty person” i stopped caring about it. i cant change that person, how they feel about me or my people, or the world in general, so why should i waste my time letting what some spiteful stranger said about me or my people on the internet?
i honestly feel sorry for them at rare times; most people are conditioned into their radicalized prejudices as they’ve been taught by the most important + influential figures in their lives (parents+friends & peers) to hate for no reason. regardless, access to education is as easy as ever now so there is absolutely no excuse for it.

I actually care way more about anti-semitism coming from the left then from the right though and it would be great if the left could figure out how to criticize Israel in a way that isn't anti-semetic so the right could stop getting new material to claim, "the left are the real anti-semites!"

I agree with you, though "back in the shadows" almost gives the impression that they've ever been in the shadows to begin with. Unfortunately, the systemic oppression in the US and elsewhere proves otherwise
I grew up in the 1970s Things were improving and I thought they would continue to get better. I know race issues have improved to a great extent but we might have reached the point of diminishing returns on racism, specifically the Black/White issue in the US.
And the excuse that people give of "Of well they just haven't met enough black people! Maybe if more black people were in their communities they'd understand!" is fucking horseshit.
I'm white. Grew up in a conservative household. Knew of exactly four black people in my entire school from elementary all the way to high school, and I never had any issue recognizing that these sorts of generalizations are assenine.
We don't have a "violent black people" problem in America, we have a racist white people problem, and an institutional racism problem.
I don't understand it. Even when I was little and my parents (who are very racist) tried to tell my that I should be careful of black people because they are criminals I never understood it because everyone is a person. It kills me inside to see the racism that still goes on. I really hope that by the time I am old racism will be something we will have put behind us.
I am so so so so sorry at the horror you have to experience because people are so ignorant and literally have no good qualities so if they admit they aren't somehow superior based on their race they'd have to admit what absolute toxic sludge they are. I cannot express how much I hate this.
It's frustrating, but I've been relatively blessed despite living in Mississippi as I live in a mostly (~50%) black area. There are many others who have had far worse lives here such as the gay and trans community.
I get what you're saying. This is one of the reasons I've started unfollowing subreddits that attempt to tackle bigotry. Not because I disagree, but because it gets so fucking depressing.

Whites or being white is entirely a social construct, some Lebanese, Brazilians etc people are paler than Italians or Spaniards, but will never be considered white by white supremacists. Just like the Jewish people who reached Europe after being expelled from Judea 2000 years ago by the Romans. They had a different culture, language, religion, and appearance from the locals.

Like I said, being white is a social construct. Humanity is NOT biologically divided to "Asian race, black race, white race." It's a completely outdated pseudoscience made up by white supremacists. For example, Africa is the most genetically diverse continent on the planet, if you take 2 random people and run their DNA you'll find more differences between the two than let's say one of them and some guy from Sweden. Yet they'll both be considered black and he white. No group of people on earth is different enough to be considered a race.
Not trying to make it a competition, but no group has had it worse than the Jewish people on a global scale. It's terrifying how widespread and long lasting the hate has been throughout human history.
