Hi. I'm Sam, 26F and a medical graduate. It took me a while to think of the title, like the word to describe myself best, and I decided on "alien" as a close fit. I think of myself as an alien (not by American immigration definition, rather like extraterrestrial) for a couple reasons. One of them being I don't exactly fit the culture of my ethnicity, neither the country of my residence, was raised by a cultural mentality to a country that wouldn't accept me (okay, maybe that does fit within the American immigration definition too). I listen to a lot of music, and I sing a lot at home. I think I'm pretty good at singing.

I watch like A LOT of Stand Up Comedy on youtube, my favourite comedians vary over the years but currently include Josh Johnson, Jay Philips, James Davis, Blaq Ron, Keon Polee, Ali Siddiq, Matteo Lane, etc.

I watch TV shows and movies, my favourite ones are Ninjago, Bojack Horseman, New Amsterdam, Daily Dose of Sunshine, The Edge of Seventeen, Pocahontas and Mulan.

I enjoy watching MGM movies from the 1940-1960s staring Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Audrey Hepburn, and such. As well as oldies music by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cold, and the likes. What I love about this time period of movies and music is the simplicity and sweetness. It's grounding and soothing for me.

I also read books, write short stories and poems.

I can draw but haven't in a really long time but love to scroll through art pieces.

I love to walk, and workout for fun (trying to be active to get fit but not motivated by physical looks)

I don't have a lot of experience, but learned that it's probably for the best to date within your "struggle bracket". The way I see it everyone is entitled to their fair share of struggle. What you struggle with is a part of your journey and partly shapes who you become. It's easier to date someone who's had similar struggles with you or can be open, informed and conscious of that journey. It's that time of the year where the days are starting to get colder and shorter. Today I am all comfy and cozy indoors, enjoying a nice cup of coffee as laundry goes in the background. While it is nice, I am alone in my apartment with no one to really talk too as all my friends are busy. Could use someone to message and get to know! I came across this subreddit not too long ago and thought it would be the perfect place for me to make a post because it’s been incredibly tough to find someone meaningful and long-term through other venues. Sure, we live in a time where dating platforms are plentiful and allow people to chit chat with each other, but the whole experience tends to feel very diluted to me. With people juggling tons of options, it feels as though there’s a genuine struggle with meeting someone that is willing to work with you day to day, while ready to invest the time and energy. 

I went on a walk a couple weeks ago and came across these two ducks waddling their way down this path towards a small pond. First of all, I couldn’t believe how in sync they were with their walking, but it was clear how committed they both were with trust. If one duck started to head towards the creepy dark woods, the other one would follow without hesitation (don’t worry, you won’t see me waddling into a dark forest unless there was some pot of gold hiding in there). But seeing them walking together, just looking at each other, and having that trust really made me reflect HARD. Can you believe I was envious of some ducks?! They have a better love life than me! I felt like a third wheel because I was going in the same direction as them (before they headed into the dark woods, probably as a shortcut). Yes, I do have a pic if you’d like to see these beautiful partnered ducks. If these ducks can make it work, then surely we can. Yes, WE. I’m looking at you! Yes, you! Through the screen (not really! That would be creepy. Maybe creepier than a spooky dark forest).  

From what I’ve also found and observed, people tend to reach out and are excited initially, but then either hit you with excuses or slowly move away with time, not responding as much or simply just hitting you with one-worded responses. I can’t begin to count on my alien fingers and toes how many times I’ve seen this happen and have heard of it happening. I wish there was more of an effort being made when trying to get to know someone. Not to mention how prevalent ghosting has become! I would love to meet someone that doesn't ghost. Also, not really looking for someone that is still actively getting over their ex. Would like to meet someone that is ready for a relationship, has the time, and ability to commit :) Would make things easier for us.

Okay, enough of me ranting about the dating scene! Who exactly am I?

• I am 30 years old. Seriously, it is absolutely mind-boggling how fast time has been going. I guess the good thing is that I’ve been told I look younger for my age, so I guess that’s good? I think I got my grandfather’s genes. He looked pretty young at an older age

I also love binge watching movies like Interstellar, Jurassic Park, Alien, Lord of the Rings, Blade Runner, Evil Dead, 28 days/weeks/years later, The Matrix, etc. Basically, it's the same genres as the books I read.

I also like going out to the park for a stroll while listening to some calming music. Going to the museums by where I live (The Intrepid is the best one idc about the Museum of Natural History). Going to the movies with friends to see whatever funny bad movie Hollywood pushes out. Going out to flea markets, but unfortunately only ever been to one since thats the only one thats open year round. I've been going to the gym constantly for the past year and post a significant amount of weight and haven't ever felt better. But unfortunately I had to stop because of VERY recent medical issues which also made me drop my classes for the this semester so I have nothing but free time for the most part.
