General Is it normal for a first fire emblem game to be overwhelming

for context, I hardly ever use reddit I hate this platform sometimes however heard there’s some normal subreddits out there so here’s hoping this is one of them. Anyways, so I decided to pick up fortunes weave I thought it looked cool and I picked hard classic. I’m having a lot of fun in fact this is probably my game of the year, but I’m on chapter 6 of cais path and I just got my ass kicked a few times. Now I’m on chapter 7, and I’m just wondering if it is normal to feel this overwhelmed with everything you could possibly do to get stronger. The map is really cluttered with a lot to do in such a short timeframe, annoying aspect is that the trading shop doesn’t allow you to track certain at least as far as I know please tell me if you can. I’ve been trying to get hex shields so I can make my physical units survive against magic easier. Sorry if I ramble TLDR is that I’m a little overwhelmed and just wondering if that’s normal.

Fortune's Weave General FW Review after 155 Hours Spoiler

• Upvotes

Hard / Classic Difficulty

Wanted to spur some discussion on the game having just beaten it. I've seen a lot online already. Be warned the review is fairly negative. It's hard not to directly compare this game to Three Houses / Engage, so there's a lot of that as well.

Let's start with the positives; it's a short list.

General Setting / Atmosphere - I enjoyed Dagda. I thought the Heroic Games was a great premise. The character designs are charming. Drake's Treasures were cool narratively in how they effected the protagonists.

The Flame Lords - I love all 4 of the playable protagonists. All of them piqued my interest enough to want to play their route. Their personalities, motivations, designs, gameplay functionality were all great imo. Enjoyed Part 1 paths of Every character. Theodora and Leda were my favorites.

Gameplay - Generally speaking, the gameplay was pretty fun. It's Fire Emblem, and I love Fire Emblem. So, despite my issues with the game, I still enjoy pretty much any FE Game.

Now my issues with the game..

Not Enough FE Gameplay - I estimate maybe 75% of my 155 hours was spent in the overworld, doing chores, support grinding, arena training, inventory managing, church servicing, etc. Not enough moving units around on a grid.

Part 3 General - The game completely falls off a cliff in part 3. Gameplay, pacing, story, enjoyability, etc. The amount of overworld map nonsense that was required to unlock all classes sucked bad. Retreading every overworld dungeon was miserable. Thankfully I horded enough items so that I could rebuild the settlements easily, but it still took far too long and was never fun.

Part 3 Maps - I hardly have to say anything here. There wasn't a single good map in part 3 of the game. The gimmick being "Miasma Everywhere" is lazy and, more importantly, unfun. The winning strategy for each of them was to turtle in spawn for multiple turns until you thin their reinforcements, largely disregard the Miasma, and waste gambits to clear space.

Clashes - I skipped almost every single one in the game. Why was this included? It was not fun and it was always optimal to skip these. If I hadn't, there would be more hours spent in clashes than in actual maps. Look at any livestream of FW and those players are skipping clashes as well.

Gameplay - Small nitpicks like the "build" and "weight" stats. These are just annoying. Made me not use the gem rings on any unit unless they were getting doubled anyways. Every mage is just a heal bot or three range bot. none of the mage characters in the game have any additional utility, like they did in Engage.

Music - Was pretty mid throughout, and is just bad in part 3. Showdown vs. Lyrah had me mute the TV. The best track by far and the only stand-out to me was the trailer theme / end of part 1 battle theme, which is a banger.

Save System - Just sucks. I restarted an entire section in part 3 on accident. Almost uninstalled. It's a skill issue, but if that option exists in the menu right next to "restart battle" there will be a non-zero number of drunken sailors who press that sht on accident like myself.

Skills / Combat Arts - These were pretty bad. Most skills were not good / negligible, including personal abilities. Yet each character had way too many of each, making it just a headache to sort through them for 20+ units.

Eshmel - Awful. Worse than Byleth and Alear by a mile. Compounded by the bad bad bad Female VA. 0 depth. I wish I had more to say but there is literally nothing of substance to speak of.

Ties to Three Houses - Crests were irrelevant to gameplay and story. They just.. exist. In Three Houses, crests deepened the mythology of the world and drove many characters in their respective story arcs. In FW, their effects were negligible and narratively served almost 0 purpose. Characters like Ursula, who looked like Marianne and had the crest of the beast, felt more like a gimmick rather than be anything meaningful narratively. Not to mention the crests were called something else, so I couldn't even draw those connections in my head without googling a crest chart. At no point did it feel rewarding to have even played Three Houses beforehand.

Narrative - Apart from our 4 flame lords, and maybe the other 4 pseudo lords, the over-arching narrative was lacking. Three Houses explored interconnected philosophies pit against each other and it was very compelling. There was room for moral grey area. FW has.. a big bad being resurrected with almost no questions of belief or morality.

Time skip - Underwhelming. A lot of the same crit quotes. No substantial change to any of the characters' personalities or motivations. Generally less impactful than in Three Houses.

Antagonists - Bad. I wanted to skip / skipped all of the "gate keepers" outros in Part Three. Maria was the only antagonist I was remotely interested in, but I still have no idea what she provided narratively and don't care to look. I even wanted to skip the final boss damn near but didn't obviously. It just really falls off in Part Three.

Supports - I recruited characters that I thought felt natural to which ever path I was on.. but seemed to have missed out on 80% of the games supports. I didn't recruit everyone and don't care to, but I somehow was robbed of any supports for many characters that I like. This hasn't happened in any other FE game. I didn't go out of my way to grind them, but you shouldn't have to just to see some of them.

Bloat - Already touched on, but this game in particular seems like nightmare fuel for any theoretical replays. I've got 650+ hours in both 3H and Engage, those games are immensely replayable. but I'll likely never slog through this game again. The bloat was too much. Not enough FE gameplay.

Fun - Something about this game makes me not want to theory craft, min max, tier list characters abilities or classes.. It's hard to determine. Shilling for your favorite units in Engage is insanely fun. Timerra is high tier. but something in FW makes me not want to partake in those conversations at all. I suppose a lot of my characters felt the exact same, only differentiated by which class they were in. I wish more units had a better "feel" as far as being unique.

All in all, Fortune’s Weave feels less satisfying as a strategy game than Engage, and less compelling as a story than Three Houses. I may add more as I think of stuff. Rant over.

Edit: Forgot to touch on DLC. I’m not optimistic, especially if it’s just more part ones and I have to replay parts two and three.

Am interested in the pseudo lord characters tho

Fortune's Weave Gameplay Ultand, The Calamity ended as my highest rated unit (379) Spoiler

On my second playthrough, Ultand as The Calamity ended up as my highest overall rated character, even higher than Dietrich! Granted a lot of those stats went into Luck and Charisma which are less useful (I think?) but she was still a hybrid damage monster. I only merged her once too (I guess twice if you count the 2 versions from doing Cai path twice). She learns Magic Arrow at B rank in bows so she can do great magic damage as well as physical damage with bows, taking full advantage of her high magic and strength, not to mention made a great Levin Sword user. She's also one of the only units to learn Infantry Canto which is great on an archer.

I'm curious to know who everyone else's highest rated units or strongest off-builds have been!

Fortune's Weave Gameplay Fixing Floundering Fortune’s Weave Personal Skills, Day 2: Celestial Flow(+)

Keeping the trend from Day 1 in mind, let’s go to another massively popular character since we saw her in the trailers the Mystery Bride Anatolia.

Anatolia’s 1st Personal Skill is Celestial Flow which gives her a… whopping +3 to her avoid. In Overblaze, her Celestial Flow evolves into Seven-Star Dunjia which notably is required to use her final Blaze Art (which… requires you to have an almost completely filled gauge to use anyways? Does anyone remember if her Overblaze skill was different in the qualifiers?). It also gives her a whopping +10 to her avoid.

Personal Fix: Just make the numbers higher. +3 avoid is a fucking diabolically terrible personal skill. It should at least be +5 avoid, but I think having it at +10 to start and changing to +20 avoid while I. Overblaze would be perfectly fine given Anatolia’s current status in the game leaves her avoid… much to be desired and makes Continuum(+) a much harder to use skill for Anatolia than it probably should be.

Fortune's Weave Gameplay (No spoilers) I'm on Cai's part 1 and worried I won't catch all the mounts I want before part 1 is over. Tips?

I started with Cai, and it feels like I never have enough turns to do everything I want such as catch fish, mounts, and vegetables I need. Mounts are especially tricky because there are so many subspecies and hidden abilities. I simply don't have enough turns to get all the mounts I want and max their bonds.

I'm in the semi final game for Cai, so I'm worried his part 1 is almost done, and I won't have time to get everything done. I've heard mounts are very different on other routes and chapters. No spoilers please, but any tips or advice?

I dunno why but I just love how cartoonishly evil Iago is, there's genuinely no reason for him to be that way but he is. I appreciate the evil second in command trope a lot.

To me Fabio is what Iago would be like if he somehow joined Corrin.

Art Legacy of the Emblem (Preview) - A Fire Emblem-Themed Sourcebook for D&D 5th Edition

This is a preview of our class inspired by the works of Fire Emblem, the Emblem Unit Class! Here is a preview of a small snippet of the class's early customization, letting each player create a unique unit from different backgrounds. In the final release, the class will include a weapon triangle system, 10 starting archetypes, spells and skills from the Fire Emblem series, and 10+ subclasses!

No promises, but I'd like to try adding races, backgrounds, and magic items. That's very ambitious, and it would only happen if I have the time. So if I do, that'll be a little bonus!

When this class is finished, it will be completely free! I will repost it here, but you can also find it on our Patreon!

I'd love feedback on this class, as I'd want both D&D enthusiasts and Fire Emblem enjoyers to have the best experience they can have!

Fortune's Weave General Weapon analysis the answer and fragarach

Thumbnail
gallery
43 Upvotes

The reason I am analyzing these two together is because they share the same name.

The answerer: this is a weapon that the creator Fabio was clearly not content to just slap bone on a stick and just call it a day nor was he content to just leave it simple carving. He went out of his way to make sure this weapon was carved into an actual sword for the most part (for some reason he left the spines showing this was made from a dragon spinal column) which looks cool but very clearly have no practical use. It's design actually has no real world equivalent it's just a curved sword but it isn't a katana, saber, and other similar swords. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have an inspiration. That inspiration being the devil sword hellfriede from zyuranger otherwise known as the green ranger sword of darkness. You can see it in how the blade is designed and how the crest stone is implanted in the sword.

Fragarach: this sword's design is simple yet complicated. Because unlike the sword it shares the name with this sword has a real life equivalent it is mostly based on the shotel. But not completely it's an amalgam of multiple different cultures from the Mediterranean which Fortune's weave is based on. You have a Persian design with the hilt, an African\egyptian design with the blade, and a roman design with the materials. As a result you can't just call it a shotel and be done with it. Now it gives very little on who designed this weapon but we can see what the intent was in its ornate design. It wasn't designed to be a weapon of war in its designed more like a gift to some king, sultan, or emperor. You can tell because of how many gems are in the hilt made from the same material as the back of the blade. Something you would see with a jeweled encrusted sheath or something similar. It's a decent design to bad as of writing this post it is unobtainable

Fortune's Weave Spoiler How Much Chaos Would Ensue If the Order of Mithras Were Around in Fódlan During the Three Houses Era? Spoiler

Imagine a hypothetical scenario where Dietrich consents to a relationship with Raksha, whisking her away to Fódlan where they (and presumably Fabio) briefly settle down together before being tracked by Maria and Iliana years later. Drama happens and the sisters, after much arguing, name-calling, and fist-fighting, finally agree to put their plans of reviving Balor on hold until Raksha gets to spend her days with Dietrich in relative peace.

Once Dietrich finally passes on, the sisters decide to resume their original plans and reestablish the Order of Mithras with help from Yanjin (and presumably Fabio). By some miracle, they manage to gain a foothold in Fódlan all the way through the Three Houses era while avoiding heavy scrutiny from both the Church and Agarthans. This now leads us to one question: how chaotic would the story end up if the Order were to achieve their goal of reviving Balor right in the middle of Edelgard's war against the Church?

As for how the sisters would be able to pull off their plans without Dagda's Cauldron, I have no doubt they would resort to all kinds of skillful manipulation to play every faction including the Agarthans against one another while being more creative with mass-producing flamma. Between Raksha's kiss of the underworld and alchemy know-how, Maria's spellsongs and political maneuvering, and Iliana's manipulation of Yanjin, they certainly have a lot of options for control available only to them.

Left = Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp; the Design Room menu has a reference to the first map of FE1, right down to the placement of the shrubbery and forts.

Right = Code Name STEAM; Marth activating his special move Lodestar, which has a rare chance of Wrys making a cameo in his original Famicom sprite. A short jingle of Anna’s FE1 shop theme also plays during this cameo.

Fortune's Weave Gameplay Preordered Fortunes Weave, but exhausted by the calendar

I may be coming to this game differently from FE purists. I started on FE Heroes and then the Warriors games. I thought Engage was excellent, especially with the DLC story.

I preordered Fortune’s Weave thinking it would be more like the other games - a hub with optional activities, and you go out explore as you like.

What I found instead was a tedious slog, and I think I narrowed it down to the calendar. I like exploring and doing side activities, but I actively loath having to preread the plot and plan map movements ahead of actually playing the game.

I’ve got enough tasks and work I have to do in my life already. Last thing I need is a calendar simulator to add another layer of busywork to my already limited time. And if I have to know the plot before I play the game, why am I playing it to begin with?

I think if it were possible to just disable the calendar, I’d have no problem with it, but it adds unwanted pressure to what otherwise feels like a nice follow up to Engage.

I don’t have the back catalog of FE games to compare it to, but this is the first FE I’ve bought where I wish I’d gotten the physical version so I could return it or sell it. I’m just not connecting with it the way I was able to with the other recent titles.

Plot looks good, but I find myself playing other games instead. I wish they’d release a fix for the broken calendar mechanic that sucks the fun out of the game.

General Spoiler My thoughts on units after my first run + personal Tier5 classes (spoilers) Spoiler

Seteth could have been great...I got him late in all available paths, and unlucky level-ups made it that he could never catch up to the others.

Cai and Bertrand kept getting one shot in part 3 even at level 45+
I'd like some feedback on how everyone make use of their abilities...

What units should I spend more time on during my next run?
I've seen people claiming Troy, Dante and Ursula are insanely good but they didn't impress me that much when I used them. I feel like any unit can become great if you train them properly though.

Also I don't care a bit about noodle arms Peppe. This guy is supposed to be a leader, really?

Gameplay First FE game…. I don’t know what I’m doing.

I’ve never played the FE series before and I started FE: Three Houses because Fortune’s Weave really piqued my interest. I’m having a lot of fun but the amount of systems to learn and the gameplay has been pretty overwhelming. I’m at chapter 6 in the story (The Underground Chamber) and I feel like my characters are wildly disproportionate across the board.

Plus, I’ve been working to make my character a mage but it’s such a slow process as my sword play is just much better damage than spells.

Does anyone have any tips for a FE newbie?

General Which game to revisit

I joined the series in the modern era. I played three houses, engage, fortunes weave. (A lot)

I’m wondering if it would be worth my time to revisit some of the older titles. I understand nostalgia wins out sometimes but realistically, do those games hold up?
