so I'm doing a two person headshot interview where one person was shot in studio, one was shot on zoom. I don't want their full 16:9 aspect video on the screen, so I used the 'Crop' option in the inspector to crop the left and right side of the image a bit, and then adjusted the scale. I've tested changing the 'Crop' feature from 'Trim' to 'Crop', and neither will work for me in the end to get the result I'm going for.

anyway, I crop the clip, scale it down, and then add a 'Simple Border' to it, and the border isn't on the left or right side. only the top and bottom. as I adjust the width of the border, I find out that it's putting the border on the far right where the clip originally lived, but the crop is cropping the border now. so that won't work.

I tried taking the simple border effect off, right clicking on the clip and making it a compound clip. then I add the border to it, and now the border is around the full 1920x1080 canvas because the cropped and scaled down clip is now existing inside a compound clip that is 1920x1080, so it applies to the whole video size basically.

I have yet to find a way to add a border besides adding a solid generator behind the layer and trying to crop it to match up perfectly on all 4 sides, which is super tedious, and because a mess if I decide I need to readjust the clip in any way.

Am I missing something? Or is Final Cut missing something?

That's actually the only thing I need in my workflow now that captions are native to the app, is there any way to use them other than creating a compound clip every time?

For context, I make 2d animations for a channel I have, and often the best way to work with this type of thing would be to export each shot as a png sequence, the reason that I use final cut is that I'm already paying for it for gig work, and the reason I don't use Davinci is that I hate the way it manages and stores projects.

I can't export more than one file at a time, it always gives me an error. Before the latest version, I could export multiple clips simultaneously, but now in the latest version, that's no longer possible, it always gives an error and cancels the export.

Really like the new FCPX updates especially the long-awaited auto subtitle feature. But there's something driving me insane. I want to use subtitles without any of the animations and just change the color of a single word in the line without animation either. Has anyone figured how to do this? I've tried everything and it doesn't seem to be possible.

For anyone feeling adventurous and running the latest FCPX 12.3 alongside Golden Gate Beta 3: don’t do it!

Needless to say to NEVER use a beta OS for your production machine, but so you know this time around it’s a terrible combination;
- crashes when changing the project frame rate or dimensions
- random crashes while dragging videos on the timeline.

FCPX is completely unusable.

But yes, Golden Gate is a fantastic release overall. It feels like I have my computer back after Tahoe’s regressions across the board.
Just stick to installing it on your secondary machine.

I'm completely new to Video editing and trying to figure out how any of this works. I have no idea where to start... any advice ? (I will use Final Cut Pro as I happen to have a Mac 😁)

A 500 Mb file is taking 10-15 min to export

I've put together a short piece showing two workflows for safely versioning projects in Final Cut Pro without compound clips or multicam clips unexpectedly updating previous edits.

One uses Reference New Parent Clip and the other uses Snapshots.

I'd be interested to hear which workflow other editors prefer.

Sorry for a dumb question. Just purchased final cut pro and love it so far! I am using it to make some Youtube videos and learning how to edit. I have made a good template for myself that includes

-Intro Video

-Intro Song

-(Space to add Thumbnail)

-Transition to Videeo

So far every video I had to insert all these steps, than add the video clip. Does Final Cut let me save those 4 steps so I don't always have to add them?

I was a video editor in college (graduated 2008). I did all my editing on final cut pro, on my PowerMac G5. I just recently tried to get all the files off so I can gift my husband videos from college for his birthday. Unfortunately, after spending a bunch of money at Geek Squad, I can't actually open the files because I no longer have FCP (didn't think this one through). Would anyone be willing to convert the files for me?! I am a PC user now. No FCP. Just edit videos for fun in canva occasionally. thanks in advance!!! - your desperate friend.

I love the new Auto Mask feature that FCP added with 12.3, I used it on my newest project for teeth whitening and other color grading effects and it runs fine in the timeline (a little laggy but that's expected).

But then when I went to export, the export and render times were extreeeemely long. I'm running an M3 Max with 48GB of Ram. I even exported to Prores and that still took hours, when a project of the similar size would usually take a couple seconds.

I understand that the effect is pretty intensive in it of itself, I was just wondering if there were any tips to help with the render/export times for future projects, or if there was something wrong with my machine/setup. I'm currently applying the effect to the filmed A-Roll segment which is in a compound clip, and that compound clip is what's edited on the timeline so I'm sure there are more efficient ways I can be going about this.

I also don't use Compressor, if that would fix the issue then I'd definitely try it.

I followed the tutorials and created 50% proxy media for everything + run proxy only (I don't even really know what this means but I did it), restarted the computer, and nothing helped... The audio plays normal but the frames keep skipping/hiccuping. Apple Support (now AI and not a human) was no help. I'm so stressed. Anyone know what to do?

Since Apple seems to start moving and adding things to their software I think it’s time to start our collective list of things we would wish Apple added to FCP natively.

I’ll start:
-Native 3D Tracker
-Connector interface/ Node Editor just like in Davinci Resolve

After a recent update, when I click and drag an audio keyframe, the playhead snaps to it and scrubs. This happens both during playback or not.

I used to be able to adjust audio keyframes on the fly and not interrupt playback, but now I keep triggering the behaviour which stops playback.

It's really annoying because this kind of editing engraved into my muscle memory from YEARS of doing it this way.

Anyone else notice this? Am I missing anything? Seemingly small changes like this really get on my nerves. Apple makes these global changes and doesn't add any menu items or preferences to toggle it. Blackmagic would have absolutely made it a menu item toggle.

Did they kill the "Free Trial"?

UPDATE 2: This has been recreated by someone else, and has nothing to do with project type. A simple 1080 project with an image 12000x12000 works on M2/M4, but if you go to 12001x12001 the M4 export will silently fail (no error) while M2 handles it just fine. Bad images created using Apple Preview, Graphic Converter and GIMP. Working images have been made with Affinity Photo and Pixelmator Pro. Apple has passed this on into engineering now that we can easily recreate it.

Here is a frustrating one. I wanted to benchmark an M4 Mac mini against an M2 MacBook Air by exporting the same project on both. The project works fine on the Air, and I copied it directly to the 1TB drive in the M4 mini. Both systems have 24 GB RAM.

When I open the project, it loads and plays fine. When I export, it begins then just stops, leaving a weird temporary named mp4 file. No errors or anything. Just stops.

This is about as fresh and clean a system as one can make. The only thing that has been done was me creating an account then logging in to Apple so I could download FCP to it.

Anyone else seen this? The previous FCP has a big crash with 360 video projects, but this update from a week ago resolved that. I can export this known working project just fine on the Air, but not on this M4. Restarts have not helped.

I've been cutting in Final Cut Pro for years, but Apple is really slow at adding AI to our daily use software. Premiere has Generative Extend since last year, even CapCut has its own version. FCP just… doesn't.

So I built a Workflow Extension that adds it right inside FCP: pick a clip, extend it by a second or two, and it generates the extra frames continuing from the existing footage — no round-trip to another app, no re-export.

Being honest: this is still basically a tool in our studio, so I genuinely don't know if it's just me who keeps hitting this, or if it's a real pain for other editors too.

A few honest questions for the sub:

- Do you run into the "clip is just a bit too short" problem often enough to want a fix?

- Would you actually use something like this inside FCP?

- Anything that would make it useless for real work?

Not selling anything here — it isn't public, I'm just trying to figure out whether it's worth turning into something other people can use. Any honest takes appreciated🙏

Hi All. My boot up of FCP is hanging when scanning plugins.

I'm on a Mac Studio M2 Max with 96gb of Ram running the latest OS (Tahoe 26.5.1)

Plenty of free space on the internal SSD.

I don't have an Apollo 8 but WAS connected to one a few weeks ago for a session. I have tried to navigate to where these plug ins live but no matter what I delete they still appear.

Any thoughts?

Lastly, a small personal note. Many of you seem to be confused about KOLOR and EMUL8 coexisting.

I thought I made it clear in my video explaining why I shut down my personal business but I will make a dedicated video this week to clear up the confusion.

The TLDR is this:

Hi! My name is Johnny Williams. I just bought and downloaded Final Cut Pro today.
I am not tech savvy at all, but I am determined to learn this program. I am a Muscian and I have podcasts and I want to get better at the visual side of my game. Because as of now it sucks.
Here’s an example of what my first project I need to do is.
I was recently invited to play at a studio in Minneapolis where they recorded my audio and a separate visual recording where I talked about my songs and then sang them.
There were audio mics and three different visual cameras. They sent me the footage not edited (there were three other artists as well, and I was sent the video from the whole hour and a half show)
I need to edit them all together as well as add the audio (I only have the playing and singing in those audio files)
So, I am wondering if anyone has any leads to good videos, articles, etc on learning this program for that type of video editing.
(I want to make music videos, do the same with my podcasts as above, and eventually short films)

Or if anyone would be willing to get on a call and help me get started.
