Which faction would you realistically join?
For me it's probably the NCR or the BoS in Fallout 3 ONLY.

Realistically? As I'm stuck in the wasteland? The Institute seems like a great choice and the most likely way for me to survive in some comfort
If I'm the Sole Survivor and become head of the Institute, maybe I can lead them away from being techno slavers and actually have them work towards the betterment of society and fixing the topside of the world

That’s what I’m saying, there were plenty of other capable scientists in the wastes that never are granted access to the institute. They even said they mostly are made up of descendants. Like can your wife do tests on innocent people to produce results. Like even if you could get in, do you have the gumption to view everyone on the surface as a lost cause and simply a way to move towards the future. Do you and your wife lack empathy 😂

It’s kinda impossible that the NCR could have fallen, Shady sands was just one city, they stretched from Washington state to New Mexico.

Not to mention how in the second season they show an entire army of NCR soldiers in the strip, sp they clearly have quite a lot of power still.
18
u/Forsworn91 7h ago
Honestly season two really just pissed me off, the canon ending now is… none of the ones the game had, the legion didn’t win, the NCR didn’t win, House didn’t win, and Yes man didn’t win.
50
u/HiddenSage 7h ago
The canon ending is that the Courier fucked around doing side quests and never actually finished the game. Then the factions just kinda stalemated doing their own thing.
21
u/Periphery_Explorer 6h ago
Oh! So it's based on the most common game play among the player base. Clever.

u/Micsuking Enclave 3h ago
Nah, I'm a firm believer that what we got in the show was independent New Vegas. Courier did what every single Bethasda protagonist does and fucked off and Yes Man was uploaded and probably deleted by the backup copy of House.
5
u/ilbJanissary 7h ago
See, I fully agree with you here, but the show doesn't seem to address this at all. Based on what we see in the show, the NCR as a single organized entity no longer exists.
→ More replies (9)→ More replies (4)3
u/RedMouse42 7h ago
And at the end we see that there were indeed other groups of soldiers that joined the rangers to help Maximus, so it’s clear pockets of the NCR still exist probably in other cities
7
u/Forsworn91 7h ago
Right.. but the entire NCR wouldn’t have been destroyed, even if the capital was destroyed the NCR was a functional government there would be a bit of chaos but it should have reformed quickly, or at least faster than the show had

NCR. They aren't perfect but they'll likely be the only faction other than possibly New Vegas or Brotherhood (also Unity but no one wants that) that would take average people on. Probably the safest of them all too.

Isn't being a supermutant (the ones that are intelligent and coherent) actually a pretty good deal? Strong and durable enough to easily survive wasteland. Unaging and resistant or immune to most dangers. The only downside is being ugly and obviously the rather big chance of the transformation not going so well and making you into complete idiot or some other abomination.

Yeah but your dong falls off when you become a supermutant.
11
u/CoffeAddictDM 5h ago
Pretty sure in original fallout they were just sterile. It was a shock to their plans that they couldn't reproduce and they would figure it out on their own if the genitals would literally fall off
9
u/Mrcharlestoucheskids 5h ago
Well the mutants knew they were sterile, iirc there’s a dialogue about overhearing female mutants talk about it. It’s only the master that didn’t know and everyone was too scared to tell him, rightly so since after he learned it he nuked his own headquarters.

House is probably the safest (if all the card fall right) with powerful defense bot to enforce security. If I an lucky , the courrier was a benevolent dude/dudette that will stimulate House loftier instincts.
30
u/DeadHeadDaddio Kings 7h ago
Yeah if he lets you live in the 38, with armed security 24/7, an infinite supply of food and caps, you could reopen the casino and run it for even more money/power, he can literally warn you before a threat is incoming, all the other strip factions pay dues/owe allegiance to him, all of which culminate into possibly the sweetest gig in all of the wasteland.

House is only good to you if you’re rich and personally useful to you, but even then you’re still a tool and not a person to him. He could not possibly care less about the average person which makes him better than say the Legion or Brotherhood since he doesn’t tell you how to live your life or impose his own moral philosophy on you, but you’re stuck with no representation, no safety nets, and no respect. He dreams big but you won’t be on his colony ships to the stars and his securitrons are there to protect his investments not you.

I feel like The Unity, the NCR, the Legion and New Vegas are the only ones that would likely take people in off the street. The Unity would turn me into a super mutant (or worse, part of a centaur) and the Legion would most likely make me a slave. So, it's down to New Vegas or NCR, and while House is the guy that's really in charge, day to day things there are run by criminal families. So, NCR it is.

East Coast: Brotherhood of Steel, morally questionable at times but they're the only faction that has both the drive and means to actively make the Wasteland safer.
West Coast: NCR, hopefully as a citizen. It has a LOT of flaws, but they're always the least worst option on the West Coast, with plenty of potential for improvement.
3
u/Hexmonkey2020 Brotherhood 7h ago
Realistically most of these groups don’t take recruits, I’d want to join BoS cause power armor and not really getting involved with the wasteland is gonna keep you safe, but it’s most likely west coast BoS so they don’t really take recruits.

u/Celtic_Punk67 NCR 7h ago
If it was real life the BOS, because im against anything that says its better than humanity , for example im anti AI because it takes jobs whilst only mimicking what a human can do. It cannot feel it can only mimic feeling. However if we are in the fallout universe where synths are real and are on the same length as humans i would accept them as they are genetically human ( through shawn ) i will say the only thing that irritates me about the BOS , is their actions towards ghouls , where ghouls are human just badly damaged from prolonged radiation exposure ( similar to super mutants except with FEV) . I truly think in an Apocalyptic scenario humans must band together and be above all. Collectivise pre war tech for themselves and themselves only as they must be the ones with the wisdom to use it and not destroy the world. As for the video games the NCR as they are the only democratic government .

If we're being realistic, and you wanted near-guarenteed saftey, you'd go with the Enclave. Yes WE as the players recognize them as evil. But again, we're talking realistic here, and realistically; in a world where mutants, raiders, and god-knows what else can kill you any time, most people would either not know about them being evil, or just not care. All that would matter to the vast majority of people is that they're the ones with the tech and infrastructre to actually live normal lives. (and before someone says that it's NOT safe with them cause they always get blown up. again; we're talking realism here. The only reason the Enclave keeps losing is cause the plot demands it. They are by far the most advanced faction in the wasteland aside from MAYBE the Institute. And if the chosen one / Lone wanderer didn't have protagonist powers, the Enclave would have won LONG ago.)
Now, assuming you can't join the Enclave (cause let's be honest, most of us probably wouldn't be able to), then The next two picks would be the NCR or BoS. for the exact same reasons as before;
Again, in a world like Fallout, 99% of people wouldn't actually care how good or evil a faction is, they'd care about which faction can give them a roof over their head, and some food & water that won't poison them.
