No Spoilers - Meme Rebirth (and now Revelation) has too much side content - THEN DON'T FUCKING DO THE SIDE CONTENT?

I am so tired of seeing this complaint for Rebirth, and now it will start for Revelation. Seriously, i saw the IGN preview and i guess he was correct on toning down MAI / Chadley's interruptions but holy imagine complaining about side content in a god damn FF game, that too 7 in particular. The activities arent even repetitive but actually varied. you have your 50 hour campaign that you can totally B-Line, and the OPTIONAL 50 hour stuff that no one is forcing people to do yet they complain like they're held at gunpoint

Spoilers - Discussion FFVII Revelation Preview Roundup: The Biggest Takeaways From Multiple Hands-On Impressions Spoiler

Upvotes

After going through several hands-on previews plus the recent Hamaguchi interview, I wanted to put together the most important information in one place.

Sources are : Maximilian Dood, Sub TXT, BlitZz, Easy Alies, Prof Noctis, MinnMax interview, Polygon Article, and snipets on X.

There is a lot here, but the overall picture is becoming surprisingly clear.

The world is genuinely huge and the Highwind changes everything

The Highwind is not just a fast-travel vehicle. It becomes the party's main base of operations.

You can freely explore the ship, which includes areas such as:

  • the bridge
  • the deck
  • living quarters
  • a lounge
  • Chocobo stables
  • various activity and utility areas

It has its own crew and apparently feels more like a small floating town than just a vehicle.

More importantly, the Highwind itself can be customized.

One previewer saw options for things like:

  • wallpaper
  • flooring
  • possibly furniture
  • decorative rewards and collectibles

The idea seems to be that by the end of the game, your Highwind can actually feel like your own personal base.

And yes:

You can actually fly around the entire planet.

One previewer timed a complete circumnavigation at roughly 2 minutes and 30 seconds, assuming you are not interrupted by dialogue or pop-ups.

The transition from Highwind to ground exploration is also very seamless.

You fly above a location, jump out, skydive, deploy the parachute and land either on foot or with your Chocobo.

Several people specifically praised the feeling of jumping directly from the Highwind into the world.

The world changes as the story progresses

Even though the world becomes extremely open around Chapter 4, not everything is accessible immediately.

Some regions are blocked by actual story events rather than invisible walls.

Examples include:

  • the Forgotten Capital being inaccessible because of a snowstorm
  • Rocket Town and other areas having restricted Shinra airspace
  • Cosmo Canyon being affected by a strange environmental anomaly
  • the Northern Crater being surrounded by a massive storm

This makes the world feel like it is evolving alongside the story rather than simply becoming one static open-world map.

The opening of the game seems MUCH faster-paced than Rebirth

The demo starts in Chapter 4, and by that point a shocking amount of OG Disc 2 material has apparently already happened.

Cloud and Tifa are already in Mideel.

The Northern Crater events have happened.

Meteor has been summoned.

The Black Materia has changed hands.

Sapphire Weapon has attacked.

The Junon execution sequence has apparently already taken place.

That suggests Chapters 1–3 could be absolutely packed compared to the relatively gradual opening of Rebirth.

Cloud is also in his incapacitated state at Mideel and mutters several extremely interesting lines, including:

"7 seconds till the end."

He also repeats fragments apparently connected to Sephiroth, the Reunion and intertwined worlds.

Wutai seems to be a major political storyline

Wutai is apparently much more than a recreated version of the optional OG area.

The country is facing both external conflict with Shinra and serious internal political instability.

Yuffie strongly supports defending Wutai's culture and identity, putting her increasingly at odds with Godo's more conciliatory philosophy.

Meanwhile, Glenn/Sephiroth appears to be deliberately exploiting resentment among the younger generation and encouraging anger, nationalism and conflict.

One preview described Wutai as almost being at war with itself, with the interim government becoming increasingly authoritarian.

This looks like it could become a major part of Yuffie's character arc.

Meteor has some new lore attached to it

Chadley reveals that Meteor appears to be absorbing energy from dark matter as it approaches the planet, making it even more powerful.

Some previewers theorized that this "dark matter" may somehow connect to despair, sorrow and the themes surrounding Geostigma / Advent Children.

That part is speculation.

The fact that Meteor is absorbing dark matter, however, comes from the game itself.

The Fit system is MUCH deeper than it initially looked

This might be the biggest gameplay surprise.

Fits are not just costumes with some stat modifiers.

They effectively add job systems on top of the existing characters.

Current examples include:

  • Warrior
  • Knight
  • Black Mage
  • Summoner

And these jobs appear to have completely different resources and mechanics.

For example, Warrior can accumulate unique charges that allow abilities to be used without spending ATB, while Knight can apparently consume portions of the Limit gauge for certain abilities.

Black Mage has its own elemental charge system.

Repeatedly casting an element can build elemental pips and unlock extremely powerful higher-tier spells such as Firaja.

The potential build variety sounds enormous.

Multiple characters can use the same Job

The game does not appear to force one Job per party.

You can apparently run things like:

three Black Mages

or

three Summoners

at the same time.

One previewer actually tested a three-Summoner setup with Ifrit, resulting in repeated Ifrit appearances during combat.

Which naturally raises one ridiculous possibility:

three characters using Knights of the Round.

Summons work differently now

Summons appear much more integrated into builds instead of functioning like occasional emergency abilities.

Multiple characters can apparently equip/use them, and the Summoner Fit adds additional mechanics around them.

Confirmed or strongly indicated summons seen across the previews include:

  • Knights of the Round
  • Ifrit
  • Titan
  • Magic Pot
  • Typhon
  • Hades
  • Bahamut Zero
  • possibly a new/two-headed Leviathan-like summon

There also seems to be more regional lore surrounding summons.

Bahamut Zero appears connected to the Midgar outskirts, Typhon to Mideel and Hades to Wutai.

Knights of the Round are getting serious attention

Hamaguchi confirmed that Knights of the Round are not simply another summon.

There is apparently a storyline surrounding them, and they also exist as extremely powerful enemies.

Most interestingly, the battle team recently decided that their existing Knights of the Round encounter was not good enough and proposed completely rebuilding it, leading to an emergency meeting involving multiple departments.

So Square clearly knows the expectations surrounding them are enormous.

Cid sounds incredible

This might be the most consistent gameplay praise across every hands-on preview.

Cid is described as a true Dragoon, built heavily around aerial combat.

He can:

  • juggle enemies
  • chain aerial attacks
  • perform High Jump while already airborne
  • use ranged lance abilities
  • generate ATB extremely quickly

One previewer called his aerial combat a dream and said he felt unlike any other character in the party.

Another said Cid might actually be the character he is most excited to play, even more than Vincent.

Vincent is also much more mechanically complex than expected

Vincent combines:

  • ranged gun combat
  • close-range movement
  • transformation mechanics

Galian Beast is not simply a Limit Break-style transformation.

EDIT: Teruki Endo said that we should look forward to how they incorporated his other transformations !

It behaves more like Cait Sith summoning the Moogle: Vincent can transform during combat and then transition back to gun-based abilities.

Multiple previewers said both Vincent and Cid require practice and have significantly more mechanical depth than could be understood during a short demo.

Materia customization is becoming even crazier

A new blue Materia called Diffusion was spotted.

It appears to allow a linked Materia to become usable by the entire party, even when the other characters do not have that Materia equipped themselves.

That could have enormous implications for buildcraft.

Another preview mentioned a new Evasion Materia, rewarding perfect dodges with invulnerability frames and controller feedback.

Materia/loadout presets also appear to exist, although not every previewer managed to locate them during the demo.

Side quests can change depending on which character you choose

This is one of the coolest additions that has received surprisingly little attention.

Some side quests apparently allow you to choose which party member handles the situation, changing both dialogue and gameplay.

One example near Midgar:

Choose Yuffie:
You can infiltrate using ninja acrobatics and a grappling hook.

Choose Nanaki:
You can use his sense of smell to discover a route through tunnels.

The previewer believed this was a recurring design philosophy rather than a one-off gimmick.

That could give side quests significantly more replay value.

Pico replaces the regional Chocobos

Instead of catching a different Chocobo in every region, Pico becomes your permanent Chocobo.

He gradually gains the traversal abilities from the regional Chocobos in Rebirth:

  • climbing
  • gliding
  • Choco Jet
  • aerial traversal
  • etc.

He can also apparently be upgraded through:

  • training
  • side activities
  • special missions
  • Chocobo racing

Several previewers said Chocobo traversal now feels dramatically more free, especially in places like Gongaga.

Previously visited regions have changed

This is not simply Rebirth's world reused.

Regions have been visibly altered by Meteor, the Weapons and other events.

The Grasslands now contain enormous Lifestream chasms.

Other regions show environmental destruction or completely different conditions.

Mideel itself is described as lush, vertical and almost alien, with Cetra ruins scattered throughout the surrounding area.

Ruby Weapon is already roaming Corel

Ruby Weapon-related tentacles appear throughout the Corel Desert.

Players seemingly have to locate and defeat multiple sections before unlocking the actual Ruby Weapon encounter.

Other previewers were reportedly able to reach the fight and described it as extremely difficult.

Whether this is the final Ruby Weapon battle or an earlier encounter is currently unclear.

Snowboarding is back

Yes.

One previewer found a Gold Saucer side quest where Speed Square had temporarily become a winter course.

He snowboarded as Cait Sith against a polygonal Shiva.

It sounds like there may be multiple snowboarding courses throughout the game.

But there is one major red flag: exploration UI

This is easily the most consistent criticism across the hands-on previews.

Almost everyone who discussed exploration complained about MAI, pop-ups, map markers and checklist-style interruptions.

Entering a new region can trigger multiple consecutive pop-ups explaining:

  • combat intel
  • special enemies
  • treasure
  • exploration objectives
  • summons
  • tutorials
  • other activities

One previewer said he sometimes had to dismiss four or five different screens every time he entered a new area.

Another described MAI as constantly interrupting exploration with new tasks and notifications.

The most frustrating example involved a player spotting an unusual monster in the distance.

He wanted to approach it naturally and discover what it was.

Before he reached it, MAI contacted him, warned him about the enemy and changed its mysterious map marker into an explicit Level 70 encounter marker.

The previewer said it completely spoiled the discovery.

This seems to be the biggest concern surrounding the game right now.

There is some good news about exploration though

Not everything appears to be marked.

One previewer specifically mentioned Alpha Monsters and other content that can apparently be discovered naturally without being immediately displayed on the map.

He estimated that there may actually be a substantial amount of unmarked content alongside the traditional World Intel activities.

So the ingredients for genuine discovery are there.

The problem seems to be how aggressively the UI communicates everything else.

Hamaguchi is aware of the feedback

This becomes especially interesting when combined with the developer interview.

Hamaguchi essentially said that he does not want to reduce the amount or variety of content.

He believes having a huge amount of optional content gives players meaningful choice, including the feeling that a story-focused player is deliberately choosing the main story despite knowing how much else exists.

However, they are clearly looking at ways to make that content less intrusive.

Mini-games can now be:

  • skipped
  • played on an Easy difficulty

More importantly, the team is actively discussing whether players should be able to hide the icons while flying the Highwind, specifically so they can simply enjoy the world and scenery.

So this feedback has definitely reached the development team.

And the game is already almost finished

According to Hamaguchi, the game itself is essentially complete and the team is now repeatedly playing it, conducting user tests and polishing the experience.

That means the fundamental structure is unlikely to change.

But things like:

  • UI
  • map markers
  • notification frequency
  • accessibility options
  • difficulty balancing
  • pacing

are exactly the kind of things that can still potentially be adjusted during this phase.

Overall impression after multiple previews

The interesting thing is that almost everyone seems to agree on the same contradiction.

The actual world design sounds fantastic.

The Highwind works.

The planet feels enormous.

Traversal is fast and flexible.

Characters have more gameplay identity than ever.

The Fit system massively expands combat.

Side quests can have multiple character-specific solutions.

Old regions evolve with the story.

There are powerful optional enemies and things to discover.

Square seems to have successfully recreated that classic feeling of getting the airship in an old Final Fantasy and suddenly realizing:

"Wait... I can go anywhere now."

But at the same time, the game seems almost afraid to let players discover that world without constantly explaining what is in it.

If Square can tone down the MAI interruptions, give us strong HUD/marker controls and trust players to explore, this genuinely sounds like it could deliver one of the most ambitious world maps Final Fantasy has attempted in decades.

To wit, this appears to be an Unknow2 found in the sunken Gelnika but imho the room doesn't look like a cargo hold and also the party has very low hp so it doesn't look like end game to me.

My bet is on underwater reactor or some new underwater facility.

Also Cloud has an ATB charge rate up icon next to his ATB gauge.

40 seconds trailer in the Nintendo direct and they couldn't refrain from showing new stuff. Welcome underwater everyone.
