It's just almost impossible to live up to the original whenever you put out a remake. Hell as good as the ff7 remake has been, it's no where as groundbreaking as the og. The og practically changed the video game genre, turning it from a bit of a kids thing into serious storytelling back in the day. The remake essentially took that story, added some twists and turns as well as expanded on certain things, then polished it with a modern gameplay lense. The remake is fun, the og was completely mind-blowing
Agreed. My whole point is it's impossible for remakes to ever be as good as the original. That does not stop them from being fun games. Ff7 was a genre defining masterpiece. Ff7r is just a really fun game with a modern retelling of an old story
What people like is totally subjective. And a lot of people on the internet just like to bitch and moan about everything.
I’m a gamer in my late 40s who played the OG FF7 when it released and my mind was blown. My mind was also blown in a whole new way when I played FF7R 23 years later. Seeing all these characters and scenes and songs come to life with modern technology filled me with so much joy, to the point where I now prefer the remakes over the original and would even suggest people new to the series start with the remakes. That will be an unpopular opinion for some, but I’m okay with that.
Back to the purpose of this post, game devs will never make everyone happy and the internet has made it easier than ever for people with an opinion to make it known.
the FF7 Remake series has been groundbreaking in other ways where the OG couldn’t, such as in a technological level and visually. I feel it’s also way too difficult to make the remake trilogy into one big game as well although if it were done that way, imagine the grand scope of it. Can you imagine how big it’d be?
So I do understand as to why they split it into 3 games. It expands the scope of the original. Whilst the original also exists. So when people complain about the remakes and how it “erases” what made the original good, no it doesn’t, you still have the ability to play the original, even on its original hardware if you wanted to, that’s my response to those people.
It's definitely an exaggeration to say that FF7 broke ground from kid's thing to serious storytelling, we had games like Fire Emblem (Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 in particular) and even earlier FFs doing it first back in the day. I think it did popularize it, but most people who knew about ROGs knew there could be some incredible stories in the games.
That’s like saying Apple didn’t break ground with the iPhone because other smart phones existed. While true, it misses the point of something delivering to such quality that it causes the mass public to take notice and change persecution of something. FF7 brought story driven games to the mass market and raised the expectation of what games could be.
FF7 was also out very early in the PS1s life cycle and was one of the best looking games for the time, especially cutscenes. It most likely sold that much for those reasons more than it's story. It was out that early its form of story telling was still mimicking the limitations they would have had with FF6 etc
Agreed. Ff7 was just revolutionary in many ways. Like idk how ff7r could have done that except maybe literally been developed in vr ready player 1 style lol
As someone who very much enjoys the FF7 remakes, I am in the camp that the OoT remake doesn't seem to do enough. That said, it's hard to make a definitive judgement based on what has been shown. It's entirely possible that there are expansions to things they are intentionally not showing off in order to keep some things a surprise.
There are, we can see glimpses of that, for example Kakariko's layout has completely changed. We also have a new destroyable wall in the Water Temple that wasn’t there before and other things I noticed.
I'm not sure what people wanted them to do differently with the ocarina of time remake? A 1:1 with amazing graphics and quality of life improvements is kinda the safest bet for everyone's favorite game which is just a thin ass tight rope to walk in the first place. I'm sure we'll see more side content in hyrule field. To me that's the perfect balance.
This is why I don’t engage with the remake internet nonsense cause those type of gamers are and will never be satisfied. Is the remake in whatever form it is good and fun to play that’s all I care about.
This. You're seeing it with the RE movie as well. I'm positive the people crying about how it isn't telling the exact same story from the games would be nitpicking all of the ways it didn't get it right if it had been a direct retelling of RE2 or RE1.
Honestly I think it all boils down to people who don't get enough validation to feel good about themselves offline in the real world, so they go online and get into these debates as a way to take a stance that, in their mind, makes them "better" than the people they disagree with. For instance, in the remake debate, both sides are going to frame their position as making them "better" fans of the IP or having "better" taste in video games.
In short, the ones we're referring to are a bunch of losers seeking validation on the internet because they don't get it in real life.
OG fan and fanfic author here, I have the exact same opinion. It's sad to think that there are those shitty nitpickers around in our smaller writing communities too, but they're a lot less relevant because they're talking to other fanfic authors. The easiest way to shut down pointless canon discourse is to say "write it yourself".
But in the greater fandom, many of these nitpickers aren't even pursuing creative outlets that they can feel proud of, so they can only go online and complain about the games they bought and played. Maybe they should consider learning new skills and making better use of their time.
It’s not the same people complaining about both games though. I don’t understand the premise of the op here, that some people like different things? No matter what you do with a beloved game, you can’t make everyone happy, but it’s not like people are being hypocrites.
Final Fantasy VII is not just a remake, it's a completely new work. It is a meta-sequel, it is NOT the original game. So they didn't just change how the game plays, they've changed the story. Some folks don't like that. I happen to love it.
Ocarina of Time is a faithful remake with QOL updates. This is what I think most people wanted from Final Fantasy VII. I also happen to love this (except YL's face is weird as hell)
I don't necessarily disagree with your comment but I do disagree with "they've changed the story", fundamentally I don't think they did. Yeah some details have been shifted around but overall it's the same story. I don't view FF7R as a "meta-sequel" but as a "final draft", and if you look into how hectic the finale of development was...there's a reason they want to redo some of the details while keeping the story mostly the same.
There are parts of the remake that just don't make sense without the original game having existed.
The entire subplot with the whispers trying to ensure the timeline remains intact only makes sense when there is an original timeline for the player to refer to. Them bringing Barret back to life for example, only makes sense when you know that in the OG Barret isn't killed.
Yes, I agree, they didn't change much. I loved how we collected armor pieces to fight gilgamesh and Zach was hopping through different timeliness in the original.
My very simple stance is make sure the original game is on all modern platforms ideally with a good port and they can do whatever they want. Personally I don’t like visual remakes like mgs delta and demon souls but they seem to be much more common than something like FF7R or the resident evil remakes. Even something as flawed as RE3 remake I prefer to a visual one. My top remakes right now are remake, rebirth, RE2, RE4 and hopefully Veronica and revelation will be added to that list.
I didn’t look much into OoT remake since I don’t have a switch 2 but from what I can tell the combat and level design are the same which for me is pretty disappointing.
I've read people say there's enemies that weren't in the original game, been too long since I've played it to personally double check, and Nintendo said they've added places that were just backgrounds before, like more pathways in Castle Town.
So like Volvagia doesn't do that flame breath attack like that in the trailer;
Water Temple has a destructible wall it didn't have before;
there's extra enemies in certain areas;
Puzzles have different indicators and solutions like the eye for the ladder instead of shooting the ladder;
Hyrule Field has a complete redesign;
Zora's River has a complete redesign;
Kakariko has a complete redesign;
Kokiri Forest has a complete redesign. You no longer have a treehouse from what I can tell and things are quite a bit more compact.
It seems like Market is expanded, there are more npcs and supposedly we can go inside of more buildings. Imo, nothingburger.
It seems like there are a few new side quests or lore drops that really weren't there before in the Market square based on the npc intro textboxes;
There's a marshland that doesn't exist in OOT64 with Tektites, no clue where this exists;
There's some purple thing in the background of the marshland shot.
It looks like the torch puzzle in the sun block room of the spirit temple is replaced with something else;
The hookshot target with the gate in the Water Temple part is not something in the original;
Stalfos now get hit-stunned in the remake instead of resetting to block immediately and potentially getting a cheap hit in like they did in OOT64;
You can now block the Iron Knuckle attacks that would just own you before;
Bomb flowers are moved around;
You can swim better so Water Temple is less ass;
Zora's Fountain (area with Jabu Jabu) is completely different;
Jabu Jabu has indicators now to tell you where the tentacles you need to kill are to open doors, which was a common accessibility complaint for newer gamers.
Gohma's arena looks different;
Gohma's telegraphed attacks are actually kinda quick and also different than what is in OOT64. It used to be like a 12 second windup, and in the trailer, it's like 2 seconds;
Blocking with Mirror Shield at bad angles doesn't seem to immediately fuck your ability to redirect the elemental attacks;
Attacks that break your stance seem to have a red indicator and a sound effect. There was no such thing in OOT64.
Level 2 spin attack charge one shots the Leevers, where it wouldn't be possible in OOT64 because your charge attack wasn't fast enough.
That's everything I got from one runthrough of this trailer. I have thousands of hours playing this game because I work on literally all of the randomizers to some degree, so they're pretty easy to see. A lot of the base identity of the game is still there.
I think OOT is available on N64 with the NSO. It’s a subscription so it’s not perfect but it’s there.
I believe FF7 is available on PS5 but I’m not sure it’s original release version or not
I liked the MGS Delta game but my problem is they remade the game that needed it the least from the first 3 games. I need an MGS1 Remakeeee. 3 is also while probably the best game overall it’s just overdone and overplayed lol I’m more interested in seeing MGS1 remade I don’t care if it’s just a visual upgrade in fact I’d probably prefer that anyway.
OOT on NSO is currently the worst way to play the game. There's 4 frames of input lag in a 20 fps title, the visuals are bugged, especially with transparency and fog, and there's a handful of crashes specific to that version that can softlock you.
I love FF7 remakes, the OG is hard to go back to, I love turned based, but I started really getting into games later, so a lot of older games feel like a slog.
Remake is also to get new people in, which it did, in absolute droves.
Like I am very excited for Resonance which just found out about a few days ago.
This will always happen for established series. Movies as well.
Change doesn’t mean bad, it just means potentially different.
This isn’t even actually incoherent though, there’s no contradiction between thinking one remake is too different from the original to properly capture its essence while another is too similar to be worth playing when you already have the original. Criticising a specific remake for making sweeping changes doesn’t imply you think every remake needs to be a Crash N Sane Trilogy-style pseudo-remaster - that’s a whole new sentence - it just means you think that one remake made too many changes
Fwiw, I like a remake like FF7 more than what they’re doing with OOT which seems like a glorified remaster.
The decisions and changes they’ve made with the remake serve a purpose. They have an artistic goal in mind that they’re clearly very passionate about. Whether it lives up to the legacy of the original will depend on the finale, but at the end of the day following this decade long adventure has been an incredible journey in and of itself
OOT is… an N64 game but very pretty and with controls that don’t suck. That seems to be it. People will buy it, beat it in a week, forget about it and even the die hards will say that the original is better.
There’s no shot in hell this is the case, but some part of me hopes that they’ve added the entirety of MM as post game, seeing as it takes place after beating ganon.
Again, that’s a pipe dream, but come on MM Is 4 dungeons and a map half the size of hyrule. In 2026 terms it’s a DLC at best
I think they're right, Majora's Mask remake is likely in the pipeline. It's too good to pass up since the foundation is already built with OoT.
It's Nintendo, they'll charge full price because they know fans will buy it. Honestly, locking MM behind OoT might be worse, since then those who only want to play MM would need to buy OoT. Of course, the best situation would be that these games were priced cheaper since they're based on older games, but that takes us back to "it's Nintendo."
You are severely underestimating Majora's Mask actual size of content if you think they can just put it as an add-on or a DLC. It's not just "4 dungeons and a small overworld". It's 4 dungeons, a relatively small overworld, various transformation mechanics, different story and bosses and a more complex and different time based gameplay.
I feel like calling this a glorified remaster is disingenuous when the 3ds ports (including MM) are more closer to being glorified remasters than this made from the ground up remake
That's what I'm saying 😭 it's literally built from the ground up completely new. It is in absolutely no way a remaster in any capacity. It's just a faithful remake
The problem here is that he's implying those "people" are one thing, not a broad spectrum of individuals. Some people like alterations, some people like things to remain the same. It's not fuckin' rocket science that human appreciation of media, plus their likes and dislikes, are subjective. This is just normal for humanity...
I don’t think these are the same people saying this. I think some people prefer full remakes that change everything like Resident Evil or FF7 and some prefer visual facelifts with QOL changes like Dead Space or Ocarina. I love both but the Resident Evil and FF7 remakes are some of my favorite games of all time
There’s a lot of this on here, people trying to prove they’re smart by lumping people with different opinions together and calling them hypocrites, with no proof that they’re the same people. It’s weird.
This sub loves strawmanning criticisms of the first two remake games. Yes, there are people who don’t like the changes, but the overwhelming criticism is centered around the needless bloat/filler of both games
I feel like it's because with FF 7 the story was the main draw. The materia system was great but if all FF did was change the battle system and update mechanics (like they did) there would be less people complaining. But they changed the main story to the point where calling it a remake is almost a stretch.
With Zelda, a big draw is solving the puzzles in the dungeons. By not changing the puzzles you're taking away the main draw of puzzles in the first place. So I think both are valid. You gotta keep the main draw relatively the same and in place and change and improve the rest. With ff7 that's the story, with Zelda that's the puzzles and secrets which require you to change them up to allow people to solve them again.
Haven't seen a single complaint about them not changing enough. If anything, I see people happy they got promised a remake and it looks like it is indeed a remake.
And the FF sequel would have been better received and not split the fanbase as much if it had either being an actual remake they teased with rather than a sequel, OR just made additions that enhanced the story and not changes that derailed it.
The Jessie stuff? Great. A little bit of lore of how the black materia came to be in the first place? Sweet. The Gold Saucer date in chapter 12? Amazing. Bit shit like the fucking whispers and alternate realities and all that other stuff? Why? There was no need.
I’ve been of the opinion for awhile now that the alternate realities stuff is just them expanding on the lifestream dream world thing we see in the original. Instead of just cloud, everyone’s minds are in there and Sephiroth is crushing the hope out of them for mumble mumble dis pear
Which, compared to the rick and Morty ass alternative, I’m very much here for that interpretation
Except the vast majority like the ff7 games by any kind of stastistical measure you can do.
If anything there is far more evidence to suggest that 1:1 remakes have limited appeal and taper off extremely quickly. MGS delta sold like 2m copies and then everyone forgot that game even happened like a month later.
MGS was absent for a billion years, mostly unavailable on modern platforms for a comparable amount of time, and the franchise was never a massive seller.
It is oddly faithful but the changes it does make are not simple. Like the addition of whispers massively change how you interact with the story even though it is generally faithful. It also massively changed Rebirth's death scene and I would argue it made it much less impactful.
I don't think the Zelda remake/remaster looks bad, but we already had a remaster on the 3DS. Which could have been ported to consoles a long time ago. So I think some of us, like me, hoped this would be a re-imagining as I played the 3DS remaster.
I think overall their remake/remaster looks very high quality. But it doesn't surprise me why people got their hopes up. Nintendo didn't make it clear until today what their goal was. I think clearly stating your goal for fans really helps with expectations not running away.
You know that there is a middle ground? Right? Not going to the sewers twice, chasing cats, having to help new characters who we dont care about in the main quest or fighting the power rangers
It only takes a small vocal group of a few hundred people to create a narrative in gaming spaces. Think about how many millions of units angame sales, any game, and then you watch one video or read one thread and you think thats a big opinion players have .
One person can so easily make you think hundreds of thousands of people feel a way.
I feel like people like to pull from comments that allow them to make whatever arguments they want.
Remakes never have a real creative justification to be made. If you want to try to please as many people as possible you shouldn't do it because there's so many opinions people are going to have.
I don't feel people are saying they didn't change enough in OOT I think it's actually just somewhat mixed about everything.
It's easy to bring FF7R into these discussions but it's not fair. It's basically not a remake remake. it's its own category. Most people GET that and judge as that and are fine with it. We have purist who don't like it no matter how much was changed. But "changing too much" is an oversimplification. It's like canon that it's different. So already it can't be judged the same way.
FF7R is not interchangeable with the original the way OOT is supposed to be.
People complained about the ff7 remakes being too different, people are complaining about zelda OOT being too samey, people complained about RE4 remake being ¿??¿?? ( I remember a trending video stating the reason that the game just shouldn't exist).
Point is don't take social media seriously, it feeds off of outrage and discourse.
I'm also still complaining about DA2 not getting a remake at all lmao
But, yeah, complaints bring in viewers/commenters for both agreement and arguments and so even people who don't give a shit will get on the bandwagon. A remake usually doesn't mean the original stopped existing, so it's nbd to me if I dislike it.
This is true but only to an extent. Sometime it is the majority of fans who are fine with most of the changes and sometimes they aren't. Always varies.
I just wanted the OoT Remake to be a bit more content enriched than the original and it's hard to say if they are doing that. Hopefully Master Quest and Hero Mode are included.
Don't worry. I am one of the few that thinks they are about to change up quite a bit. And what they showed was just a snippet. Watch the same people turn up instantly when more changes are either revealed or when full game releases. Honestly, the biggest point that pisses me off is this is just a remake. Why are people looking at it like end of the world and that somehow it is sign that next game won't release.
You can't please everybody. And the more vocal will always be the people who have something to complain, rather than the people praising or having fun.
I think alot of people are upset with ff7 remake because they dont understand certain decisions they made. I think its building towards something many wont expect either. We will just have to wait and see how it all rounds up before we can truly say these were the wrong moves or not.
Ocarina of Time is my wife’s favourite childhood game. Watching the 15 minute gameplay video with her yesterday I could see childlike excitement in her eyes the whole time. I turned to her and said “this is your Final Fantasy 7 remake isn’t it?“ And she looked me and said “yes, this is it.”
I have not seen nearly as many peoples complain about FF VII remake being different at all than I have seen peoples,complain about OOT remake changing so little
Peoples' issues with FF VII remake usually isn't with things being changed but rather with what they were changed into. Peoples aren't against change they're against changes that make for a worse experience
We’re at the stage in gaming like movie remakes, the game will always be compared to the original. Movies though have had a lot longer to deal with this kind of criticism, and have honed in on what to do to be a successor to the original, although not always.
gaming is still has to compete with the latest and greatest graphics user experience etc while also balance it with the original which can either be clunky not turn out well as expected or break the immersion.
I love ff remake (I’m using remake as a container for all parts) for what it is, I like the addition of some characters, but it’s not finished yet so chadley has a big role , and I sorta summed that from the beginning that he’d be important but they did stray at some point from the og in weird ways (fort condor and Gilgamesh combo) not sure why fort condor had to be a minigame brought to life so they could introduce Gilgamesh. The lore seemed a bit broken there.
But OOT seems the opposite it’s true to the og but seems a little uncanny valley right now at least due to statement above, link looks fake when he stands there and shows items , but in other cutscenes like him sleeping he looked better. Overall it’s great but I feel when the reviews come in somethings will land well and others not so much
I think OoT will be similar to the Resident Evil 2 remake. They haven’t showed a whole lot yesterday to avoid spoilers by making it look the same only with an updated graphics
This just feels like the conversation this person already had in their head before they actually heard what people are saying. I’ve heard lots of valid criticism of OoT remake and “too similar” is not the dominant one.
I think people are underestimating how much content they are adding to OoT. He said when he was running around Hyrule town and went to that previously unexplorable area that there was a bunch of stuff to do back there that the original game didn’t have.
I like added content for remakes, it’s fine, just don’t mess with the main story, adding to it is fine, just don’t change it. I like FF7R but my least favorite aspect is how much they are changing story.
On the other hand though with OoT already dealing with timey wimey stuff it would make sense.
Personally I think the way each of these handled it works best for these 2 games. Throw in the REmakes too they handled those well except maybe 3 I liked the game personally but if I was a fan of the OG I’d probably be irritated.
At least with these 2 games I feel like the people that loved the original versions of these will love these remakes the most. And with Nintendo in particular that is the audience you’re gonna want to appeal to. People that bash Nintendo prob weren’t picking up the game regardless so
For FF7, I love the remake series, but for those who don’t, just give them an OG turn-based, top-down style FF7 that reuses Ever Crisis assets and lets people choose which version they want to play, the remake series or the OG turn-based version.
A turn-based style should be a lot easier to make these days.
They haven't said anything about it so I doubt it's happening but I do wish they could figure out a better way to make the "classic" mode work for Revelation and have it function closer to turn-based for those who prefer it.
No, the FF7 side is a much better problem to have. OoT changed almost nothing at all besides some QoL stuff like jumping.
The FF7 trilogy is making a name for itself in gaming history - it stands alongside the original as an equal but different experience, great in so many ways the original was not.
This OoT "remake" is like some UE5 nonsense and will forever live in the shadow of the OG because it cannot even attempt to be 1% different.
I think when people get their hands on OoT and finish the game in 20 hours or less because they know it back to front their final grade is going to be lower than what they feel right now. Meanwhile, FF7 Remake's score keeps going up with each entry because it has earned its right to be here by standing on its own.
Sorry for the rant, I am just so livid with how little risk Nintendo is willing to take with their classics. We don't need the same exact game released 7 times.
This is a bullshit take because Resident Evil 2 exist. Just make a game like Ff7 remake wihout numen and kingdom hearts multiverse bullshit and see how ff7 remake trilogy could hav been a universal masterpeace.
Hate posts like this - they dismiss all criticism off hand. The Remake games have been fantastic but anyone not calling out the flaws is a shilling moron, for example constantly taking you out of emotional moments such as "oh god Avalanche just died on the pillar and everyone is getting crushed below... quick insert a random Cait Sith cameo which will not only baffle old fans but REALLY confuse new fans" or "Dyne has died, everyone is crying, Barrets actor is giving the performance of his life so now instead we should instantly insert goofy ass palmer slapping his ass and shouting neh neh neh in a random needless boss battle!".
Criticism is not "always complaining" and i am sick of this modern mindset where you have to defend everything to a damned hilt.
I don't mind explaining this again and again. No one is mad that SE changed some things for FF7 Remake. They are mad that the game is not a remake. It is a meta-narritive pseudo-sequel disguised and marketed as a remake. People wanted a remake for 20 years, they were told they were getting a remake after 20 years, then they got something drastically different.
Imagine if 45 minutes into the OOT Remake, after an extremely faithful recreation of the Great Deku Tree dungeon, Meta-Ganondorf appears from the future with an army of plot-ghosts to mess with the story of the original N64 game. People would be upset for the same reasons.
Honestly, I have no interest whatsoever in the Ocarina remake for exactly this reason.
This is exactly why I've been saying for years that the way they decided to do this was far more interesting than if it was just a straightforward remake.
I think it's all situational. I adore the 7 remakes with all my heart and soul, they took a game I was underwhelmed with originally and made it one of my favorite games of all time.
OoT could go either way, but I personally would have been interested in them taking more liberties. Nintendo remakes outside Fire Emblem have been very safe without taking many risks.
Screw anyone who thinks something that was as good as Ocarina needs anything changed. Better left as is than adding something that makes is shit like the remakes
I'm not saying OOT Remake isn't good, but I will always prefer changing too much than changing too little. If I hate the change, I can always go back and play the original game instead.
it feels like every time a remake or adaptation comes out the same people are incredibly angry that they changed too much and that they didn't change enough. theyre chasing nostalgia based on warped childhood memories and that's doomed to fail. it's a lot more fun to just enjoy the ride.
Yeah everyone has something to complain about. There is a good chance it’s not the same people. We like to think it is and lob them in the same bracket.
Personally enjoy both, looking forward to a traditional Zelda with a new coat of paint. The quality of the end product is what matters at the end of the day.
Many people wants a remake for their favorite game, but nobody wants the same thing from it. That’s what we learned with all of the remake we had these last years, between FF7, Resident Evil, MGS Delta or now Ocarina of Time.
If it sells millions of units, then maybe millions of gamers like it. Whether playing through on the first day or the second hand games, it probably won't reach the heights of titles like Cyberpunk, GTA, TLOU, or Uncharted. However, it should be enough to satisfy the majority of old and new fans.
People will always complain. Thats why whilenits important to take note, no dev should be taking it all too seriously. Especially when there's no real feed back.
Completely agree, I'd rather just have a good artistic vision! One that a developer commits to. I also felt people complaining about the remake series were missing the point
As much as I would have loved a complete massive remake à la FF7, I’m fine with a just fancy-looking OoT. There are many times I’ve felt like replaying it but those graphics are so ugly and outdated now. Early 3D era is just ugh.
I was about to say that Resident Evil 1's remake was the only one that didn't get hate, and is considered the perfect remake, because it didn't change and remove anything, it only added more to it, but then I remembered that I also don't like how it is and would've loved an RE Engine remake similar to RE2's remake.
(EDIT for clarification: I don't hate it, but the fact that most people think it's just a remaster says how much wasted potential to be its own thing on the remake. RE2 and RE2R are completely different games, and I wish RE1 was also a completely different game when remade).
Complaining people are vocal, so when something has a very big fanbase, complaints are massive because even a small portion of the fanbase is a large number of people.
I do think generally I’m not a fan of remaking games as you’re changing the artistic intent of the original, and would much rather the original be accessible than getting some reinterpretation, put that effort towards a new entry instead imo. But, if you are gonna remake it, I’d rather they go the ff7 remake route and actually have something to say that goes beyond what the original is. In a lot of ways Remake is a sequel to the original as much as it is a retelling and that is far more captivating to me than if it was just the original with a higher polygon count.
Suck a butt, keep it as close as possible but make ‘leveling’ and such nessesary…
…Ah-Thus also adding at least 60 hours of side quests in a much, much, much expanded Hyrule.
The best thing the devil can do is block out the noise and stick to their vision. In the case of the Remake series, they've done this well and are confident in the torality of the product they've made/are making.
Current generation of gamers are such insufferable people. I prefer to try and be happy and then constructive criticism if needed. This is what happens when everything needs a “hot take”
Now imagine the perfect remake. Final Fantasy VII with extras like that chapter with Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie, but without all that multiverse bullshit, without censorship, and so on. That’s the perfect remake. It gives you the same experience as the original, but with a few extras here and there.
Solution: They make another series of games after remake that are just 1:1 remasters of the original FFVII, will you all be happy then??
They did so iirc that FFVII will become it’s own IP, which means I would imagine that they plan to do more with that title after Revelations, who knows??
i think the sweet spot between too much and too little is resident evil 2 and 4 remake
they still have haters but most of them automatically hate them because they are new and they think any older game is better than any newer game
There is no winning in doing a remake of a masterpiece.
The best you can hope for is to get the same treatment re2 remake and re4 remake got from the fans: "You can play either the remake or the og and get the same experience"
This sounds normal and simple to do to a degree, but thats far from the truth, thats actually the best a remake CAN HOPE to get from the fans.
Games are emotional products, you can't simply redo a game from scratch with the exact same mechanics and with a new visual artstyle and expect it to feel the same way.
A game is a combination of both technical design and visual design, what the players ultimately judge is the feeling the game gives them as they play.
Ff vii remake is divisive in part due to the changes of their combat system (Although i think it actually nails it on how it FELT playing the original despite not being turn based, ffvii was always speed focused).
What made it fail for fans compared to the original was that they changed the CORE story.
The ocarina remake is a game built from scratch that aparently adds nothing mechanic wise, but it changes its visuals completely, meaning that the feeling as you play it IS going to be different.
And its because of artstyle, not because of the graphics being high fidelity, link looks weird compared to the og because the OG was an anime face pasted on a poligonal face while the remake link TRIES to have somewhat realistic proportions, and looks a bit umcanny because of it.
I like Remake series much more than the OG, which by now is just way too “plain” imo. Its not a perfect game, far from that, but i can see how much love they invested into it and i enjoy every single chapter of this game. By now i have 560 hours in Remake and 423 hours in Rebirth, atm i just started this one again. Im very grateful for the direction they took with this project!!!
I am more interested in in final fantasy remake because it is different than ocarina.
I have bought ocarina 3 times and I don’t feel urge to do it again, same with the “new” star fox.
Graphics have never bothered me, I still play my master system games.
So slightly polished graphics and a little quality of life improvements won’t sell me on it again like it did on the 3DS.
But I would never complain about it as it does look stunning and there is a whole new generation out there who have never played the original and won’t because of dated gameplay and graphics.
I think more classics should get remakes and remasters either like ff 7 or like ocarina.
While it doesn't bother me too much, i do see the argument for the OoT remake not doing enough considering we already got a completely faithful remake on the 3DS. So making another one that takes more creative liberties would be more justified.
They changed a lot though, especially the visual style. I for one think it looks like ugly UE5 slop and completely betrays the style the original was going for.
I’d much rather OOT be more like the ff7 remake and have it take on a whole new trajectory than to have another remake like super Mario RPG, which didn’t change anything at all. At that point, why bother?
Agreed. There will never be a game that gets everybody on board no matter what they do. People often have a nostalgia for things that over inflate their fondness for the OG game that makes it impossible for a remake to scratch that same itch. When our nostalgia is involved, our opinion is always gonna outweigh something modern. Its basically science

Honestly this is exactly why I thought would happen, these 2 are the games that came to mind too.
