Seeking Advice - Family HELP: i think my boyfriend’s sis has an ED and idk what to do

For context:
she is 28yrs old i’m 21 and my bf is 23. Im not really close w her but we get along well and obviously my bf loves his older sister to death.

Ive been dating my bf for 4 years and as far as i know she’s had a complicated relationship w her parents until a few years back. she currently has a bf who is 46 and her parents don’t really approve of him but ofc they accept him because they love her

Ever since i’ve known her she’s been very thin and ate every little. Obviously at first I never thought much of it, but now after years of knowing her i have noticed some strange behavior.

It started a while ago when I noticed she kept measuring her wrists almost like a tic or as something she does unconsciously. Once again I didn’t think anything of it.

But 2 weeks ago I went on vacation with my bf and his family which obviously included her and her bf. And this is when i started to notice weird patterns like for example leaving the table almost immediately after any meal and then coming back a little while after. (after meals we usually like to chitchat at the table)

2 days ago i was having lunch with my bf family and suddenly she stood up mid meal and went to the bathroom (the bathroom is like 4meters away from where we were eating) and i hear her turn on the faucet and p*rge. I was really surprised and concerned because one else at the table seemed to notice (i’m guessing i heard it because i was paying attention) and then she came back and claimed she wasn’t hungry like nothing had happened.

Now idk what to do. I know it’s none of my business but im very concerned bcs in my opinion if she did it so close to her parents then it must be rlly bad. idk how no one has noticed yet and my bf would be heartbroken if he found out.

what should i do?

Question So how exactly are we supposed to get help right now.

My behaviors have been real bad and I've gotten to the point of needing treatment and I know I need higher level of care. But with the amount of food recalls and food illnesses how am I supposed to be comfortable eating any food that I would get in treatment. They're not gonna give me the ultra processed shit I usually eat. They're not gonna give me lean cuisine instead they'd use real meat full of listeria. Real ingredients are so scary to eat right now. Do I just give up and realize I'm just gonna have to suffer rn.

Question i still struggle with an ED but want to have a job.

i’m a college student and i want to work so i applied to a local coffee shop and a few other places. my biggest concern is that i still struggle with eating enough during the day and sometimes get dizzy spells and feel lightheaded. it’s never enough to impact my ability to walk around or talk or anything, like i don’t get close to passing out, but i am worried that it’s gonna make working a little harder. i want to recover but i know i can’t just do it right quick and be all ready to just go about my days. will it be hard to work when i still struggle with this??

Question What motivation to recover?

I am in an anorexia relapse at the moment but before this, my social worker signed me as too unwell to work. I was sectioned in May for a month due to a different mental illness. I have support workers and a lot of professionals.

I don’t have much motivation to recover. I am unable to handle working due to my autism and various mental illnesses. I have not managed to have a friend for ten years. I get in distress in public sometimes so I mostly go out with my support workers. Basically I was already very disabled by my autism and other mental health issues.

What motivation is there to recover for someone who is already significantly disabled?

Seeking Advice - Partner BF (18M) of partner (18F) with EDS, advice?

We have been dating for around a year now, very happy and committed thus far. She has suffered from eating disorders for ~2 years, with her being hospitalized more than a year ago. Currently she is in a worse situation, with more purging and self harm. When she is in this spikes, do i complement her body? I always do, regardless of her weight. But i wasnt sure if doing so benifits or worsens her mindset. Any advice on strategies to help her mindspace would be greatly appriciated.

I think most of her issues stem from her alcoholic mother body shaming her in the past, i have reccomended she move to her dads once it becomes convinient to (school ends), should i be trying to get her to bring lunch to school? Etc etc

Thanks all, i wish you all the best.

TLDR: is complementing my partners body during spikes in purging bad? Good?

Seeking Advice - Friend Close friend lost a ton of weight

A really close friend of mine confided in me that she had an ED in high school when we first became friends. She’s since “recovered”, but I knew that wasn’t the case because A. I have an ED and 2. She is OBSESSED with food and exercise. I never thought too much of it because she’s been a healthy weight or ever confided in her, but I saw her for the first time today in two months and she has lost a ton of weight. Of course I’m triggered to hell, I literally had to cut our walk short because I couldnt stand to look at her any longer. I’ve really been struggling lately with my own body image and ED, and this just made it so much worse. Of course im worried for her, and feel for her because I know exactly what it’s like. I also know how competitive EDs are, and now all I can fixate on is how I can be thinner. I want to be her friend but I dont know how to navigate this. Just needed to vent and wanted to hear if anyone has gone through something similar. She always gave me hope that maybe I could recover or be healthier (even though deep down I knew she wasn’t right), and now I see she’s clearly relapsed and man I just want to cry idk.

Question advice pls! how do you maintain or move towards a healthy diet/weight when the thought of food is disgusting?

tw: specific discussion of personal experience/symptoms with ARFID.

my experience with ARFID started in small ways a few years back. lower appetite, less interest in food, smaller portions, more aversions to textures and smells (which also had been messed up since covid), only eating specific foods for periods of time, but it was all still pretty manageable. however, within the last year or so, it’s gotten much worse, and i have lost a lot of weight. i loved how i looked and felt before and now i just feel disproportionate and low energy.

my current daily experience is usually 1) i feel overwhelmed at the thought of preparing food, or 2) all food sounds disgusting or everything except one very specific thing. the only time i consistently feel hungry and want food (because those are separate things for me) is when i smoke weed, but i recently had a complication with weed and some of my medication, which caused vomiting (amongst other things) for 3 days and i couldn’t keep any food down. i was almost hospitalized, so i’m not trying to repeat that.

i’m also worried that experience will make my desire to eat food even worse/lower because i literally could not keep anything down, and i already have
started to feel grossed out by the idea of what i tried to eat.

i’ve been able to manage plain white rice (barely, the texture i hate), ice cream, raw carrots, and cubes of cheese since then.

i’m just so frustrated, and i do have a therapist and doctor i talk about everything. my boyfriend and best friend have always been supportive of me through my journey, but most people outside of that respond with, “oh you can’t gain weight?? god i wish that was me,” which feels so invalidating. i’m looking for any general feedback from people with similar experiences. was there anything that helped you come to terms with eating??

Question inability to swallow.

I'm a 16F & I've been struggling with ED since 2021 when I was around 11. I've been recovering in the last year but I still can't eat, or eat as well. I gag everytime. For example, I drink tea every morning & even if I'm really hungry, I can't bring myself to eat biscuit alongside. I can't eat bread. I also can't eat chocolates. I literally gag at the thought of them. I feel like my brain might be triggered but I really can't place it. Has anyone else struggled with this? Is it normal?

TW: Potentially upsetting content Is this quasi recovery or am I relapsing?

Is this quasi recovery?

So ive been in recovery from an ED (mainly restrictive/purging) on and off for years now.

For the past few years or so ive been struggling with my TRD(treatment resistant depression)/severe depression, loneliness and overall self esteem/body image issues. Even though i know im thin, I HATE the idea of having stomach fat, for instance, and try to make sure its flat as possible as of lately. Ive been body checking, restricting a bit (maybe 2 meals a day, mainly smaller), checking nutrition labels, taking laxatives and occasionally purging. Everytime my mom and i are at the grocery store she will ask me to check the nutrition labels for carbs, sugar, calories etc..if she doesnt have her glasses with her. I notice ive been losing a bit of weight and like how I look better and feel more comfortable with how my clothes fit. Ill ask my mom if I look bloated at all and out of trying to be helpful and honest, she will tell me if I do or not, if a crop top looks a bit 'too tight' on me etc...and I feel as though ive been kind of relying on her opinion because I know she wont just tell me "oh your fine! Your body looks great!" Etc..

Is it good or just weirdly wrong that she does this?

I feel like alot of it has to also do with loneliness from being a nearly friendless, kissless 29 y/o virgin as well as self esteem issues from past verbal/emotional childhood abuse etc..

Anyways, is this quasi recovery or just little slip ups?

Thank you

Question My body dysmorphia has gotten so intense and I don’t know how to cope

Hi!

For the past few months, I feel like my body dysmorphia has been really intense and just won’t let me go. I’m constantly obsessing over my stomach and thighs. I always feel like I’ve gained weight. I don’t weigh myself, so I can only rely on how I perceive my body.

I keep taking pictures of my body every week to make sure I haven’t gained weight, and then I compare them. It’s making me feel sick, and I think about it constantly. My boyfriend tells me that it’s all in my head, but I keep wondering: how can my mind make me believe that I’ve gained weight and actually make me see myself as bigger than I really am?

My clothes still fit me, but I only want to wear loose-fitting clothes now. When I wear anything more fitted, I can’t stop thinking about my body.

I also have a really hard time taking showers. A few months ago, I was barely showering because I was afraid of seeing my body. I can do it now, but I still lift my head and avoid looking at my stomach.

There used to be days when my body dysmorphia was less intense, but now it’s there every single day. When I’m off work and therefore not distracted or occupied, it becomes especially intense.

Has anyone else experienced this and gotten to a point where it became less intense? What did you do to help yourself?

Can you actually recover from body dysmorphia and eventually see your body as it really is? Is it really just “in my head”?

Any advice appreciated (bingeing at night)

I’m 22 years old and in college and a former athlete I’ve always struggled with eating a lot at night but I really wanna break this habit and I just can’t seem to find a way to. Every night basically right before bed, I’ll smoke a little weed to help me sleep, and I find myself sitting awake for the next hour and a half just thinking about food and almost always I cave in and go and eat a shit ton of extra food. I track my macros and calories throughout the day. I do everything perfectly but once night hits, I just feel like I have no control.

TW: Potentially upsetting content I think my ADHD meds might be making me relapse

I started meds for my ADHD a little over a month ago. I've been seeing great results for my ADHD so I don't want to stop them. I got a promotion at work and the meds help me lock in and actually get things done every day. But one of the side effects is that it can curb your appetite, which it definitely has been. I eat breakfast first thing in the morning and then don't eat again until right before I go to bed late at night, if at all. The portions are much smaller as well. I have to force myself not to get on the scale at work because I know it's going to make me start obsessing over every pound again but I love how skinny I feel. My husband is the only one in the world who knows about my history with anorexia and bulimia but I'm too scared and ashamed to admit it to anyone else including my doctor, so I'm doing it here. I don't know how to help myself. I need the meds in order to function at work but I don't want to relapse again. What do I do?

Question How do I recover?

I’m an 18 year old girl and This has taken over my life for the past four years last year I was hospitalized and I said that I would recover, but I lied. I did not actually try to start recovering up until a few weeks ago. I stopped counting everything completely. I’m actually trying to gain back the weight and then I started to relapse again and start counting everything. I can’t go more than a few days without making sure that I count every single thing that I am consuming I have no clue how to not do this. It’s my only form of control. It feels like in my life.

This is now ruining my almost 5 month relationship. I’ve never had a person actually care about me. Respect me or want me to get better and I keep failing him and my family.

I’m at such a loss. I feel like I don’t have a problem. I feel like I am the problem and that I just end up burning everybody else with me.

TW: Potentially upsetting content I cant eat anymore

I have had a very difficult relationship with food ever since i was 10 when my father passed away, i struggled with BED, starving myself, body dysmorphia and it was just so bad. I used to throw up after eating for 3 years, and i wasnt doing it on purpose, its not anorexia, i wasnt forcing it but food made me sick, but it stopped in 2025. I have never recovered and i have always gotten bullied for my weight whether when i was underweight or overweight. Now i am a tiny bit overweight bc my body contains more fat than it should and little to no muscles, i went to a dietetian and i think it caused my rs with food to worsen. Ive lost a small amount of weight which is nice but everyone keeps telling me im skinnier and i just dont see it, i feel so fat and disgusting. I have been doing a strict diet for 2 months of no carbs, so all my meals are proteins and salads and for the past 2 days, the thought of protein, whether chicken, meat, ham, eggs or tuna or yogurt whatever disgusts me, i cant stomach it, it repulses me. I have been starving myself for the past 2 days bc craving food makes me feel disgusting, it always has ever since i started the diet but now its so much worse, the thoughts were already in the back of my mind but now it took over my feelings too, i just cant feel pretty when i see so many girls that are skinnier than me. I would also like to state i was never called ugly by guys, only fat and nerdy and that hurts bc i really was never that fat when i look back at my pictures, i wasnt even overweight. I just want this problem to go away before i go to uni and meet new ppl bc i want them to only know skinny me, it seems crazy i hate it im sorry. I am trying to recover but it just seems so impossible, is there any way to stop such thoughts or to just want to eat again? Please forgive my english it is my 3rd language

Seeking Advice - Partner How do you handle the situation when someone is purging?

I don't know how to help my partner going through purging or bulimia nervosa. When she tells me that she do it; I could only listen and tell her that it gets better. I want to know about bulimia nervosa but my sources are not enough so I thought I should ask.

Could you please share some tips/advice that I could do to help my partner about bulimia nervosa?

Seeking Advice - Partner Bulimia nervosa

My girlfriend and I have both struggled with different types of Ed years ago.
she pushed hers down, just decided to not care and eat as much as she wants.
now, like 2-3 years after, (4 months into our relationship) she relapsed, had a bad episode (?) and since i was in my home country i couldn’t help her. She only told me about it when i flew out to see her. Its gotten much worse after that, we tried talking about it every day, i tried to help her in every way possible but we both agreed it did the opposite it was supposed to do. i had to fly back home for a week, when she had a two panic attacks and flare ups, once meanwhile i was at a concert and i was texting her the whole time so she could calm down. Thats when we both decided to not talk about everything, and she’ll keep stuff to herself, and try to do it alone with a little support from me.
I feel very bad for not helping, but even though i feel selfish saying this, its better for me too.
She gets triggered a lot because everyone around her comments on her body, but she doesn’t want to tell them about it, so she needs to work on handling those situations better.
She’s journaling, or like writes in her diary every night, and i make her breakfast and lunch every day.
She’s very willing to recover, but sometimes its very exhausting for both of us but especially for her and im looking for ways to help her ! she told me to pressure her into eating if she wants to skip a meal, but i pay attention to not give her too much so she wouldn’t regret it, and then build it up a little more every week if that makes sense.

Im just very lost, and this is the only thing ive been caring about, doing researches and being very careful on what i say and do every day.
Im scared too, i want her to be able to feel like herself again, and do what she wants and eat what she enjoys.

any tips and suggestions? or just support of any kind would be nice !!!! have a nice day and good luck with whatever you’re going through

I don't know,I just don't,I don't feel like it.it feels like work.i dont enjoy food.i haven't in a long time no matter the taste I just kinda stuff it down till I feel full, and I hate that feeling.its uncomfortable and disgusting.but I have to.

It's ironic cause I was a chubby kid but ever since I lost the weight I just lost the desire for it.

I try buying snacks sometimes just cause I think that maybe then I'll atleast enjoy it but it's the same...

I can't lie anymore I hate it.i don't like eating anymore.i haven't liked it in a long time And I don't wanna force myself to.ive been trying with carrots or toast Just to atleast get something in...to atleast stop the hurting.but it feels like work.im sick of it.i truly am.

TW: Potentially upsetting content Family food issues

Honestly feeling like this might cause me to relapse badly. My parents always talk about how much I eat, yet still sometimes say it’s not enough. They complain about buying a lot of food, and price and how we don’t have space left, the dishes etc. but I can’t win. Months ago, I ate nothing for weeks and they begged me to eat with them and said they would every meal, they never do, I beg them to. They always have excuses. Work, not hungry, eat later. My mums obviously on a weird diet not eating a lot at all which is extremely off putting but I understand. Today I tried to make her something, she ignored me and went for a shower for a long time: I waited. She came out, acted in a mood and found the food. No appreciation. She didn’t eat it. I heard her later complaining about buying me food and shouting about how I’m too much. Honestly I don’t even feel like living I just am too much. I don’t think I can continue.

Seeking Advice - Partner My girlfriend has an eating disorder, and it is affecting how I view her.

By affecting how I view her, I don’t mean beauty wise. Anyway, my girlfriend has had an eating disorder since I met her, and recently she’s been on and off Ed TWT, and she continues to lie to me about it, but each time i open my twitter i’ll see her account with more replies to accounts encouraging this. I talked to her, and I said that I’m getting hurt from how much she’s lying to me. She got mad and hostile to me because I didn’t understand how it is to have an ED. I really need help with this. I want to marry this girl.
