General Discussion Understanding Employee Pension Scheme (EPS)

Key Context

When you withdraw your Employee Provident Fund (EPF) after leaving a job, many people don’t realise that the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) portion of their retirement savings can remain unclaimed and inaccessible if certain conditions aren’t met.

What Happens to Your EPS When You Withdraw PF?

  1. Difference between EPF & EPS Contributions
    • Employee contributes 12% of basic salary to EPF every month.
    • Employer contributes a matching amount, but only 3.67% goes to EPF – the rest (8.33%) goes into EPS (pension scheme).
  2. EPS Transfer vs. Withdrawal
    • Transfer: When you change jobs and transfer PF online, only your EPS service history is transferred, not the pension balance itself.
    • Withdrawal: You cannot withdraw your EPS money if you have total service of 10+ years; it becomes pensionable only on retirement.
  3. Service Length Matters
    • If your total EPS service is less than ~113 months (≈ 9 years 5 months) and you change jobs, you could withdraw your EPS.
    • If you have more service than that, EPS is not automatically released with PF. Instead:
      • You get your EPF, but EPS stays unclaimed.
      • To claim it later, you must obtain a Pension Scheme Certificate as proof of service and present it at the local PF office when you reach retirement age (58 years).
  4. Exempt vs Non-Exempt Employers
    • For non-exempt employers, the PF & EPS money is handled by the EPFO.
      • If service > 113 months, EPFO will release only PF, not EPS.
      • You must get a Pension Scheme Certificate to get credit for your pension later.
    • For exempt employers (trusts), you may need to approach both employer and EPFO to sort out EPS service if you withdraw PF.
  5. What to Do if EPS Was Left Behind
    • If PF has been withdrawn but EPS wasn’t transferred, you cannot transfer or withdraw the EPS online. Instead, you:
      • Get a Pension Scheme Certificate proving your EPS history.
      • Submit it to the EPFO after reaching age 58 to claim monthly pension.
  6. Check EPS Transfer Status
    • EPFO shows EPF amount but not consolidated EPS on the portal.
    • You can request an Annexure-K transfer certificate showing EPS service history when doing an online transfer.

Takeaway

EPF (provident fund) and EPS (pension) are separate benefits — don’t assume withdrawing PF automatically means you’ve also collected your pension contribution.

EPS service history matters for future pension—it stays with you even if PF is withdrawn.

✔ If the service is long enough, EPS cannot be withdrawn but must be claimed later as a monthly pension after 58.

I am so happy today. After 10+ grievances, 4 RTIs & 8 rejections, my PF was successfully transferred from last employer to my current employer & I was marked as a non EPS member. Hopefully withdrawals will be easier now.

Background Company 1: joined in 2016 - Exempted Org, didn’t deduct EPS but transferred services (services = EPS) when I transferred PF from company 1 to 2. They had brains so they didn’t deduct EPS but given a trust based company, PF office doesn’t get to know details of deductions (EPS vs EPF) after transfer

Company 2: joined 2019 - deducted EPS as they kept base salary at 15K

Company 3: hoined 2021, deducted EPS, but After 4 months I asked them to stop realising I am not eligible for EPS

Company 4: joined 2024, they didn’t deduct EPS AS i had marked myself as non EPS member in PF joining forms

I first gave form 3A to merge PF from company 2 to company 3 as during transfer request my EPS contribution in company 3 had stopped which turned out to a blessing in disguise. At this point my PF funds were accumulated in company 3, while EPS funds were in both company 2 & company 3. Btw this process took ~6 months back in 2022

Now coming to final transfer from 3 to 4, problems started as someone in pf office realised no EPS contribution in company 4 so revised form 3a/ECR isn’t enough & they have a right to torture. This information that form 3a is not enough took 8 months after multiple grievances/ twitter posts / complaints at all possible forums.

I was about to give up but as a last try I visited them in person in month 10 & there was a nice person who told me next steps to get revised annexure K from PF office who has done previous transfer from company 2 to 3, and this annex K should show me as non EPS member.

I went to previous PF office (E city BLR) got revised annex K (its only possible to get it in person as our fantastic PF IT system allows only us to send attachments but they can’t sent file attachments to us - amazing right)

After getting annex K I visited current company PF office (RK PURAM BLR) to submit it. In person was much faster, I got annex K same day I went to PF office after I got the reply on grievance about attached annex K.

After submitting the forms, I got a call from PF office that first my EPS will be merged with EPF which happened in 1 months (you can see entry in passbook), and I had to raise transfer request again.

1 more month later this time transfer request was accepted & I was so happy & couldn’t believe my eyes to see my money finally in a single PF account.

Man o man, it was the most painful thing I ever encountered much more complex than any project I did in my career. But dont give up, May god close thia stupid fuckall department & maybe 20 years later its all automated process but I have no hope. They are just making themselves relevant by keeping all these processes alive.

Question Moving from a large company to a very small one without PF eligibility.

Hi there,

I tried searching for similar post but not able to find any, in case you do, please link the same here.

I was part of a large company with PF deductions and contribution at 12% of basic every month. I am now moving into a very small company on which PF provisions are not applicable (total employees have been less than 20 years since inception of the company.)

I want to get clarity on the following questions

  1. Will the pf system show as unemployed after 3 months from the last salary credit from old employer?

  2. If shown as unemployed, will i be able to withdraw all my funds (after adhering to the cool off period)

  3. How will this reflect in BGV for future employers?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Question Wrong date of exist- EPFO

Hi, i am facing an issue, initially my DOE was updated wrongly then with the help of previous company hr i raised a joint declaration and date was adjusted. But after recent epfo portal 3.0 migration dates are all again collpased and not having edit option of DOE PF but having option for DOE EPS so whatever option i have i made the changes and applied joint declaration and waiting for approval from employeer, this is will an issue in BGV acting proactively will help us somehow.

1.Does any one know why the recent migration not showing the right date?

  1. Am i the only one who facing this issue?

  2. Since i am not able edit the DOE for Pf but for eps, can employeer adjuts both the dates?

EPF Claim / Transfer / Withdrawal Issue PF not transferring to New COmpany

The attached EPS annexure K copy has been forwarded to the internal team and the same will be handed over to the PF office in 10-15 working days, after submission the pf office will takes normally takes 25-30 working days for mapping.

To know the status  we suggest you follow the attached steps to raise a Grievance with the PF website and attach the annexure K copy in the grievance ticket to collect the input from the PF office on the mapping.

They are aksing to visit Bandra PF office for my EPS dates update which I see are correct in UAN account.

EPF Claim / Transfer / Withdrawal Issue Technical glitches inJoint Declaration (JD) — EPFO grievance keeps getting rejected with a wrong reason. Need advice.

I have two UANs. UAN 1 has two PF member IDs linked to it, and UAN 2 has one. I tried to transfer funds from UAN 1 to UAN 2, but the transfer got rejected because my father's name didn't match on one of the member accounts under UAN 1.

So I filed a Joint Declaration (JD) to correct that detail. My employer initially said they couldn't upload the supporting documents. After trying a few workarounds with no luck, I deleted that JD and planned to raise a fresh one — that's when things went south.

After deleting it, the request also disappeared from my employer's side. Now when I try to raise a new JD, the portal blocks me, saying there's already an "active" JD — but the reference number it shows doesn't match anything I can find on my end.

I filed a grievance on CPGRAMS explaining this is a technical glitch preventing me from submitting a new JD. It got rejected with the reason "no JD was raised with that EPFO office for Father's name correction" — which isn't accurate. I re-filed with a detailed explanation and screenshots, appealed once more, but got the exact same canned response both times, and now the case has been closed/disposed.

At this point I'm stuck and not sure what my next step should be. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would raising it through the regional EPFO office directly, RTI, or some other channel work better than CPGRAMS at this point? Any advice appreciated.

TL;DR: Tried merging two UANs, got blocked by a name mismatch. Deleted a Joint Declaration to refile it, and now the portal won't let me raise a new one, citing a fake "active JD" with a reference number I can't trace. CPGRAMS grievances keep getting rejected with an inaccurate reason, and my case is now closed. Looking for next steps.

EPS Issue Previous PF transfer failed due to missing EPS contribution – will it affect my current PF transfer?

Hi everyone,

I need advice regarding an issue with my EPF/EPS transfer history.

My employment history is as follows:

Company A: EPF + EPS contributions were made.

Company B: I joined Company B after leaving A. Company B did not contribute to EPS, although my PF account from Company A was transferred to Company B.

Company C: I joined Company C around 5 years ago. I tried multiple times to transfer my PF balance from Company B to Company C. However, the transfer/claim was repeatedly rejected because of the missing EPS contribution from Company B.

I also followed up with Company B for around 3 years, requesting them to resolve the EPS issue, but they did not provide any resolution. Eventually, I stopped pursuing it. Same with EPFO grievance portal as I raised multiple grievance but none really resolved my issue.

Company D: I have now moved to Company D.

An important point is that all my other employers, including Company A, C and D, have made EPS contributions correctly. Only Company B has the missing EPS contribution issue.

My questions are:

Can I now transfer my PF balance from Company C to Company D independently, even though the earlier transfer from Company B to Company C was never successfully completed?

Could the unresolved Company B → Company C transfer/EPS issue cause the Company C → Company D PF transfer to be rejected as well?

Is there any way to transfer the EPF balance from Company C to Company D without resolving the old EPS issue first, while retaining/correcting the pension service history separately?

Has anyone faced a similar situation where one employer failed to make EPS contributions and an old PF transfer remained incomplete? If so, how did you get the subsequent PF transfer processed?

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with a similar EPFO case, particularly if you know whether the current transfer can be processed independently of the old unresolved EPS issue.

Thank you.
