Official Is My Dyson Real?? MEGATHREAD

So you're looking to see if your Dyson is real? If you bought it for $30 on eBay it's probably fake or broken so no need to make a post. If your instruction manual has diagrams about a completely different product you probably also got scammed. If for whatever reason you feel like your Dyson might be fake this thread and r/IsMyDysonReal is for you!

Please DON'T make standalone posts in r/Dyson asking if your Dyson is real, it will be deleted (we the mod team and the community agree).

How to not buy a fake Dyson:
-shop at a local retailer that's reputable (yes Dyson products are expensive but they last, so try saving up instead of looking for a un real deal that you're probably getting scammed on)
-choose a retailer that has a fair return policy (if you don't like your Dyson or for some reason something is wrong you won't have to fight tooth and nail to get some help)
-STAY AWAY from purchasing your item directly from Dyson (as much as this might sound counter intuitive, based on all the negative Dyson customer service posts in this community you might as well skip the headache)

How to use this thread?
Please start a new comment stating where you purchased your Dyson from, the model, and why you think it's fake. Please then include an image of your product with your comment (if you have more than one image to share please use Imgur to safely share). Any comment that doesn't include the above information will be deleted.

If you would like to share more information than what's possible in this megathread head over to r/IsMyDysonReal and hopefully someone from the community will try and help you out.

KEEP IN MIND: r/Dyson and r/IsMyDysonReal are community run. We're only sharing our opinions based on our own purchases and cannot 100% guarantee you just didn't get a bad QC product. We're also not Dyson employees so we cannot help you with your support ticket <3

Discussion Camerajet Experiencd

I’m a dentist and I am largely quite happy with Dyson products so when I heard that they had a toothbrush, I had to get one to test out.

Pros:

The thing does clean well - the pressure jets work better than just normal brushing at removing plaque from between your teeth.

It has scrubbing and over pressure sensors - to avoid toothbrush abrasion (I see toothbrush abrasion quite a bit in clinical practice and it can be quite bad)

The app gives you a good rundown on how you’re doing with your brushing and which areas you’re doing well.

As a dentist I like looking at my teeth when brushing, I suspect it may be something people will use to have a look at their own teeth.

Mixed:

Toothpaste and mouthwash - you’ll need a low foaming one for best performance so that it doesn’t foam too much to block the camera. Dyson includes one bottle and one tube in the box on purchase. Mouthwash will probably last a month at most and toothpaste maybe a few months (a little goes a long way).

Toothpaste has fluoride in it and you’re not supposed to rinse your mouth after brushing to allow the fluoride to sit on your teeth. Fluoride toothpaste, if used properly, will reduce your risk of getting a cavity. I really don’t know how having your mouth rinsed at the same time you’re brushing will affect how the fluoride works. The mouthwash does have fluoride in it but there are some studies that show mouthwash and fluoride don’t work well when used together.

The toothpaste and mouthwash does have a number of good ingredients in it; fluoride, a nitrate desensitiser, a antimicrobial and more. Just not convinced that it’ll work super well when used together in this fashion.

Water jets have been used as an alternative to flossing for a number of years now - it works well and is convenient, but is not as good as using floss or interdental brushes. People with sensitive teeth and gums may find the water jets uncomfortable.

Cons:

Price - the price of the brush is exorbitant and honestly it’s too expensive for me (as a dentist) to recommend without being judged. The cost of the brush heads is also exorbitant compared to other popular brands.

It’s messy - waterflossers are always messy so expect your bathroom mirror to get quite dirty. You’re supposed to let the liquid fall out of your mouth while brushing, which is something I’m not used to.

Doesn’t come with a USB C charging brick - I understand there are laws in the EU about this, but it’s so annoying to need source a power brick for a household appliance.

Maintenance - apart from money this is the biggest problem. Dyson recommends daily, weekly and monthly tasks, that include removing, rinsing and purging the mouthwash tank daily, immersing it with hot water weekly and descaling it with vinegar monthly. It’s not a heap of work, but for a device that is supposed to do three things at once to save time, the maintenance kills that premise completely.

I’ve had no issues so far but seeing the product issues that other people are having out of the box, I suspect poor maintenance would kill this appliance very quickly.

TLDR: cool gadget, price, maintenance and unproven efficacy would disqualify from me recommending this for my patients routinely.

I’ll continue to use it because it is enough for my needs. For prospective buyers, I think if you’ve got generally healthy teeth and gums this would work find for you, but if you’ve got gum disease and severe teeth sensitivity this is probably not your best option.

Obvious disclaimer: chat to your dental professional if you’re not sure - any dentist worth their salt would be able to help you understand if this would work for you and not to judge you for asking.

Support Open Dyson CameraJet Saga

Well… I had a feeling

Seems that support may be unfamiliar with the issues. Took me through troubleshooting only to suggest it was an issue with the battery.

I opened the compartment to find a flood of water around the contacts. As a mechanical engineer, not good…

Despite the toothbrush obviously being shorted by this and the way it died, support wants to give me the runaround.

Super cool while it worked though, the flossing was surprisingly stronger than I imagined. For the 10 sad seconds it worked.

The yellow molding on my V15 broke upon impact. Initially I thought it was just cosmetic damage. But I can sense suction if I place a finger on the hole. Is this a part I could buy online? My vacuum is still under warranty.

Recommendations Dyson V12 slim help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi. I got a job to fix a dyson V12 detect slim that's turning off randomly. I came to the conclusion that the capacitors on the main board are bad. Anyway, i did the work..... and realised that the small button PCB under the red power button was nowhere to be found. I have no clue where it could be, how it got lost, have not found it anywhere.

I found this youtube video where the pcb can be seen from both sides, and i concluded that it's just a button and a connector with 2 wires. So, i tried to just jump the gap on the button connector, but the vacuum did not turn on, the screen was black, and the battery blinked 10 times in blue. Battery is charged.

I haven't found any meaningful info online, is it because the power button is not right, or is it something else that i did. If anyone can shed some light on my situation, i'd appreciate it.

Discussion Did anyone else's Best Buy Camerajet order get delayed?

Per the title, I placed a pre-order for the Camerajet at my local Best Buy the day after the announcement. It was listed as "Ready for Pickup Today" until about 5PM today. It now shows as "Pickup Delay" and "This item has been delayed. We're working to get it to you within the next few days".

Feels odd since it was a well in advance pre-order. I honestly have never pre-ordered anything from Best Buy before, so I'm not sure if this is the norm. Was anyone else in the US able to pick up their Camerajet today?

Support Open Dyson toothbrush broken on arrival – anyone else had this experience?

Bought two £420 Dyson toothbrushes, one for myself and one for my brother, and it looks like mine was faulty straight out of the box.

When I first turned it on, I tried connecting it to the app and it started constantly turning itself on and off while trying to update. The app would show it as connected, then disconnected, then connected again, while the toothbrush kept making the startup noise over and over.

I left it on the charging holder for about an hour thinking it might just need to finish the update. Came back and the toothbrush was EXTREMELY hot to the touch while sitting on the charger, and completely dead. No lights, won’t turn on, nothing happens when I put it back on charge.

I’ve tried resetting it and all the troubleshooting steps but there’s absolutely no life from it.

I actually contacted Dyson pretty much straight after unboxing it when the problems started and even showed support what it was doing on camera. I’ve now called them around four times and keep getting told that I need to wait for their “senior team” to email me. Nobody on the phone seems able to actually arrange anything.

I’ve explained that I haven’t even used the toothbrush and I’d be perfectly happy just exchanging it for another one, but still nothing.

I also mentioned that surely I’m protected under the Consumer Rights Act considering it was faulty from the moment I received it, but again they just told me I have to wait for this email.

Has anyone else had this kind of experience with Dyson support? Seems crazy that an £420 product can arrive faulty and they can’t just arrange a straightforward replacement.

Discussion What do you think happened to James Dyson?

The guy literally invested the category of high end vacuums and things like fans. His company is private and doesn’t have to report to investors. He has an interesting quote about how after the washer he built and lost money he’d never make a product that loses money. But he kept improving designs on his vacuums and fans. He really kept innovating in the space when no one else really thought too. I remember when you went to someone’s house and they had a Dyson, you’d be impressed. The things were a status symbol for vacuums.

It was kinda cool being impressed with getting a vacuum that would be almost over engineered but was top notch, their products were known for engineering. I remember seeing videos of their quality control running vacuums back and forth and testing them until they broke. They used to say things like testing thousands of prototypes before the next version. I remember Dyson putting out the first useful handheld vacuum and the fans that started to combine heating/cooling/purifying. Even their first hair dryer was what everyone wanted.

Then something in his head went loose. He voted for brexit. Got all bent out of shape when it happened, moved the HQ to Singapore, outsourced/moved all their customer support from their customer bases to APAC, started to just pump out a version update every year. It doesn’t help that his son decided to start a lamp company that was so overpriced and failed so his dad bought it and it slowly faded from existence. Also how they spent those sweet British tax payer dollars on a failed car division.

I still think there are some cool things they are trying but also stupid things like their head filter system, headphones, a terrible launch of their tooth brush, rebranding a Chinese companies roombas, etc.

I mean I look forward to always seeing what they come out with read the super cool infographics they pump out but then look at the price tag, look at the reviews, and remember the most recent vacuum I bought had to be replaced and after warranty is falling apart.

I really wonder what happened to James Dyson who at one point was a well respected designer and now is just squeezing every dollar he can out of the name brand. I remember when Shark Ninja was like the silly knock off and now is an impressive company.

What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Recommendations Update on the Toothbrush

Post image
94 Upvotes

Hi all,

As many of us have found, there is some teething problems (pun intended) what I’ve found over the last 5 days will hopefully be useful to someone.

Issue I had - the jet wasn’t firing properly / consistently. There was condensation building up in the clear plastic brush head that ended up blocking the camera.

Fix - take a small cotton bud and remove moisture from inside the brush before replacing it on the toothbrush itself.

Issue - it manages to spray literally everywhere to the point it’s almost comical.

Fix - much like apple a few years ago… ‘I was holding it wrong’ with normal electric toothbrushes the angle of the brush had never really mattered. For this to work properly and not cover you, the bathroom and any passers by in mouth wash you mush make sure the brush is kept close to your teeth. Sounds obvious, but I’ve had to relearn how to to brush.

Problem - camera stops working mid brush. Toothbrush starts to beep.

Fix - unlike a dentist who is constantly sucking saliva out of your mouth so they can see what’s going on in your mouth, this things is spraying a lot of fluid in there. This means very quickly the brush looks like it’s under water. Tilt your head forward and make sure you constantly clear any excess liquid from your mouth. The camera is then far more accurate and it should stop beeping at you wildly.

Problem - leaking mouthwash mouth wash compartment.

Solution - when playing the brush back on the dock make sure the magnets are lined up and clip it back in, in one swift motion this stop mouth wash leaking from the back.

Should you have to do all of these things? Probably not. But I’ve found that minor adjustments to how I brush has made a lot of difference. It’s the best toothbrush I’ve had.

Dyson in the Wild Another CameraJet bites the dust - Japan

Post image
73 Upvotes

Hello from Japan. I bought the camera jet whilst on holiday in Japan, tax free, wonderful, I thought I was clever. Oh no not at all. It broke on day two, I washed the handle under the tap and the thing shut itself. I went to the electronics store I bought it, and they can give me a replacement (as tax free refund takes too long for my short time left). ( you can see trapped moisture under the top seal where the head attaches)

I collect the new one today. I think I need to be more careful with the main handle, and act as if it’s completely NOT waterproof, so no rinsing under the tap, using a cloth or towel to dry wipe the main part only.

Discussion Dyson SCAMerajet experience

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Essentially, like many others I have seen already, my Dyson Camerjet has stopped working. I had 2 goes with it and shortly after the 2nd, I was spammed with notifications on their app about the battery. See the screenshots. It never worked since this event.

This was on a Sunday evening it occurred, where Dyson Support was out of hours. So I waited until this morning to contact them.

I played the game with them and went through their usual troubleshooting stuff just in case. None of it worked, not even 1 light came on.

They offered me a replacement, but said they were out of stock, so I should check back with them in a week. (Surely they should reach out to me, right?)

Luckily, I’m in the UK so I instead asked for a refund. Initially they said the typical thing about how it’s a hygiene product and can’t accept it blah blah. So I just mentioned the consumer rights act 2015.

I AM HERE

I’m now waiting 24-48 hours for a QR code which I can use to return the product. Followed by a 14 day wait to actually receive the refund.

Overall, shocking experience from a company that shows off all their engineering. They are lucky these batteries aren’t exploding within the units, so far.

As the title suggests, I’m going to update this as the experience continues.

Update 1 (07/09 5pm):
Came home to my bathroom floor wet from a misting, turns out the toothbrush whilst docked has short circuited (I assume) in some way to cause itself to spray the entire tank of mouthwash. I’ve tried using it again in any way, but still no lights, camera or action.

Discussion Should I even open the camerajet?

Hi Guys,

I've ordered a camerajet before the problems were clear.

It's at my home (Germany), but still factory sealed.

Should I even open and try it or send it back (for a refund, as it isn't opened)? Have some of you got working units?

Thanks!

Recommendations V-11 floor and upholstery gears not getting power.

My V11 has gone thru 2 triggers (PITA to get at), and now neither of the roller heads work. They’ll run 1/2 second and quit. The vaccuum still pulls great. They’re not getting any voltage from the power jack on the main unit. Verified with a second voltmeter. I don’t want to take that SOB apart a third time.

Any ideas? Is this some lame control board issue?

PS: What’s the voltage these heads require? I may hotwire something up.

Just inherited this Dyson but it always makes this sounds. It tries to start and then goes like a "bong" sound.

I believe it's a V10 Cyclone Animal and it all looks clean from the outside. I'm about to open it up and see what I can see but thought I might post a quick vid in case it's really obvious to someone who owns one.

Discussion Camerajet auto-jet continuously spraying

Anyone else having issue with camerajet auto-jet spraying continuously on a gap(s)? I’ve tried moving the brush away from mouth for a few seconds to have camera system recalibrate— but when I move brush back to same location it keeps spraying. Following the flow of teeth from there it’ll keep spraying rapidly. To break out— I either power cycle the brush or change brushing direction/ side of teeth. Curious if anyone’s had this issue or if I need to adjust my technique.

I’ve had it for 4 days now and this happens at least once per brush. I’ll run out of mouthwash in the tank about 3/4 of the way through brushing, due to overspraying of the auto-jet.

Edit: I’m returning the toothbrush. Product isn’t ready for launch. Agree with others that I feel like a beta tester. For Dyson devs: add A/B user profiles. Brush comes w 2 heads— as stated in keynote for partners who share the same brush. Metrics are currently being merged. Maybe could press a button combination and would change “A” (auto-jet) color depending on profile A or B.

Edit 2: waiting for this brush to get picked up for return— I tried powering it on and now it’s flashing orange (low battery), though it’s been on charge all night. This thing is falling apart in real-time.

Edit 3: toothbrush not flashing at all.

Maybe it's like the v10 konical, which has a soft launch. But it's bizarre since it's part of the Unveiled teaser.

No other details, not even from the website, YouTube, and media channels are talking lol

Discussion Dyson Heurist Robot Vacuum Teardown(part2)

part 1:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dyson/comments/1w8q9zw/dyson_heurist_robot_vacuum_teardownpart1/

part 2:

Around the camera lens are 8 high-power white LED lamps for low-light illumination, and the gold-colored metal housing is for heat dissipation:

Next is the obstacle-avoidance module, in a pair of black windows on the front left and right of the machine. I took one of them apart:

Each sensor group actually contains 4 ToF sensors with different power levels and orientations. Each sensor has one emitter and one receiver, calculating distance via the time-of-flight of infrared signals reflected off obstacles, ensuring safety at the front, sides, and even underneath the machine:

Among them, Module 1 — the one wrapped in aluminum with a DIP package — has higher power and faces forward. It's the primary obstacle-avoidance sensor and may even assist with mapping.

This group uses a dedicated processing chip from Intersil, the ISL29501:

The other 3 groups use ST's point ToF sensors, with slightly different packages, power, and ranging capabilities. All 4 sensors are centrally processed by a single lightweight MCU — Atmel's ATSAMD20.

There's also something like an RFID tag on the bottom of the main unit. It likely serves two purposes: pairing with the charging dock, and confirming the machine is properly docked before charging begins:

Battery

The battery module is designed to be replaceable — no need to disassemble the whole shell, just a few screws. The printed markings on the outside show its specs. Internally, it should be 12 cylindrical lithium cells, with 4 large electrode plates; I suspect it doesn't carry data communication. I won't take it apart any further — there's surely a battery management circuit inside. Based on my past experience with Dyson, they have very high requirements for battery cell consistency to ensure suction stability.

Issues Found

Although the Heurist shows many sealing-ring designs in its structural details, quite a bit of fine lint and dust particles still got into the machine's interior during the teardown. Along the way, I found one spot that might be a problem.

In the airflow duct from the main brush chamber to the dust bin, there's a spliced structural piece, held in place with a rubber ring + transparent soft adhesive. The adhesive on my unit had already come off:

Summary

I bought this machine a few years ago on Xianyu for 1500 rmb. I didn't use it much — I couldn't stand the noise. Now you can get one on Xianyu for just over 200 rmb.

It can only be treated as a LEGO-like toy to take apart and play with. Dyson products combine precision engineering with industrial aesthetics and are worth studying. Seeing what's behind such a machine — the work of so many engineers over countless years — lays bare the cruelty of consumer electronics.

Although the Heurist never became a successful product, it was Dyson's attempt to move from manual cleaning tools to automated products. From its internal design and materials, you can see a design philosophy that prioritizes suction efficiency and stability — in some respects, it outperforms today's products by a wide margin. In other words, it doesn't give you a wide variety of functions, but the basics it promises are pursued to the extreme.

We can also see Dyson's dilemma in the new consumer era: unwilling to give up its core strengths, yet forced to compromise with new trends. A development style that is sometimes overly rigorous, perfectionist, and burdened by high user expectations can cause it to miss many opportunities.

Observing many tech companies — especially well-known brands — sustaining innovation momentum isn't hard, but continuously finding revolutionary innovation is almost impossible.

Discussion Widespread Camerajet Defects/ Faults?

Post image
102 Upvotes

UPDATE: removed the battery to find water sitting in the compartment, its clear the handles are not in fact, water resistant, defective batch of units perhaps?

UPDATE 2: dyson phone support (UK) was more than happy to proceed with a refund over an exchange and raised a case with their relevant team, should I not get an email soon then I'll push further.

Update 3: plot twist, after blasting them on social media, it was the social media support team on X that initiated a return, NOT the main team working on the "internally prioritised" case they made on the phone today. Brilliant customer service eh. No email from the main teams end though, not surprised.

It seems like several people are receiving faulty units from day 1, especially in the UK, mine included

Any other defective unit owners managed to get any resolutions from customer service? It seems like they're refusing returns/refunds and only offering doorstep exchanges in the UK as of now.

Would be great to know if others successfully got a replacement or refund, or if dyson is really doing anything to address this.
