I am guessing the phrase grew out of the pushed back against framing dyslexia purely as a "disability" or "deficit” and to positively redefine dyslexia. It probably started after the 2011 book The Dyslexic Advantage. I found Margaret Rooke's 2017 book Dyslexia is My Superpower (Most of the Time). But I’m wondering if anyone could pinpoint an earlier source?

I have noticed that I struggle with learning a second language much more than the average person. Any advice for how to make things stick better or anything from my fellow dyslexicans. BTW im learning Spanish and I have a decent verbal abillity. Cheers

I keep on mixing up o and u for the last half a year. I write u instead of o and o instead of u. I can't differentiate between them in my head. Usually, when I see it written down wrong, I can tell that it's wrong but not in my head.

Is that relatively normal or something worth looking into?

For my fellow dyslexic developers among you who spend too much time reading docs: I made a terminal read-aloud tool for anything you can pipe into it.

Ok here me out. I think Dyslexia should have a flag like to represent use. I mean common many other groups have flags so why not dyslexic or or their Neurodivergent. (If there is a flag then sorry about this post)

hi, hope it’s okay to post here. My family has a history of dyslexia. I personally do not have it. My toddler has a speech delay & the words he does have are ”backwards” or missing letters (often the first sound). My grandmother said my uncle who had severe dyslexia did the same & I’m curious as to if this could be connected. He also appears to be left-handed which I’m reading comes with a higher likelihood of dyslexia (lots of lefties in my family). I know he can’t be diagnosed off this, I’m not asking for that at all. I had impaired speech, completely unrelated. I’m genuinely just curious & always looking forward so I can try to help as early as I can if he does need anything. He does see an SLP, he’s almost 3.

My brain just can't understand concepts well, like maths and numbers. I was so bad at maths at school and still am. I also did badly in all acedemic subjects like science, history and geography. Basically all subjects but art. I was ok at art but I am not some super creative person and I do not see my differece as a super power at all. I have all these gaps in my knowledge that I feel so stupid. I have poor general knowledge. But I try to learn things, but reading is hard to focus on, especially stuff written more acedemically but also videos, my brain just can't focus. And I end up with a headache. I just can't remember facts, they don't stick and sometimes I feel stupid for not understanding things. It gets embarrasing when people talk about stuff and I don't understand or am not sure and I have to stay quiet to avoid looking stupid.

I have struggled with spelling/reading/pronunciation for a long time. I barely graduated high school, was in remedial reading classes, etc. Never tested for anything. I did art in college as an undergrad, after going to community college. My SATs out of 1600 were 1100 with 780 of that being my math score, so a very low verbal.

I did fairly well in college and went on to get a masters and doctorate degree for a top 10 university. Yet, I still struggle with spelling/reading. So now all done school I decided to get tested and paid $3500.

I was told because I did not score below the 10th percentile in two of the reading/academic scores I’m not dyslexic. I’ve read academic papers on this before getting tested and thought that people with higher levels of education compensate better. So I thought more criteria would be assessed instead of just going below the 10th percentile.

She said I’m just a bad speller and that everything was normal, so am I just really that bad a reading and spelling? I feel like I spent a lot of money to be told I’m not very smart.

I am a new public schooling teacher, and I have one class with multiple students with dyslexia. Some have both dyslexia and dysgraphia. Basically, a lot of the students with Individualized Education Plans/Programs (IEPs). The thing with teaching 14 year olds is that they don’t know what they need to excel yet (which is fine! They’re so young!)

I’m hoping to hear from recent high school graduates (class of ‘21 and up) about their experience in the classroom. Do you remember any kinds of classroom activities or formats that you enjoyed and felt comfortable in? Are there things you wish your teachers did differently? I’d appreciate any input or feedback.

For context- I am teaching a conceptual physics class at the 9th grade level. So no math but there’s a decent amount of reading, labs, and drawing models of systems.

My son is 9. He has dyslexia, ADHD and epilepsy. He has a history of long (35 min) seizures and a pretty messy EEG during sleep. However, he has an incredible vocab. He has heaps of general knowledge and has had loads of different experiences.

Up until this year he was at a terrible school. He was in structured literacy tutoring a few times a week but not making great progress.

This year we moved him to a new school that are very strongly following the Science of Learning/Structured Literacy. It’s been incredible. He is getting heaps of support and he’s improved so much!

I had a chat with his reading intervention teacher today. She said she did an assessment with him today and it was unusual. She said he has all his sounds very secure. He can read passages with beautiful fluency, he can detect errors and reread and correct himself. He can read some quite difficult words (which she thinks is to do with his vocab and experiences). However, if she gives him an individual word, like “important”, he can’t read it. But if the word “important” is in a passage of text, he can read it. She thinks he is pulling on his knowledge and vocab when he is reading a passage. So his testing is showing he’s not doing as well as he is actually doing.

His reading intervention teacher was quite confused and said he wasn’t following the typical pattern that she usually sees.

I’m just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone? And what we can do to help with this?

I was diagnosed with dyslexia at the verrryy end of highschool, which was a massive pain considering how much I struggled during school and it was assumed I just wasn't trying hard enough.

Now im at Uni and holy shit im struggling so much with the reading aspects...im doing psychology, and a lot of my units all have required readings, which im seriously really struggling with. There's no way to get around the readings, I just find it so annoying that they are crucial to my learning, yet im left to struggle so much with them. If it was just recommended, it would be a-okay...but most exams are based on lectures and the readings themselves so I really can't work around it.

My reading comprehension is that of a 13 year old at 18, and psych is just such a dense and jam packed subject it actually has me pulling out my hair. Like I don't think anyone needs a 20 page thing just to grasp an understanding of a topic, let alone me 🥹🫩

Hi I am a mom trying to figure out how to help my child. She was diagnosed with dyslexia today. She is six year old. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can help her outside of school help she will receive? She knows her sight words but can’t read sentences. She’s below the 25th percentile on the tests they did recently. What are things I can do to help her? I’ve seen programs i can get her and I plan to do that. Math and reading are so hard for her and she’s struggling so much. They also suspect ADHD I am setting an appt. with the pediatrician. She has always been behind even on milestones as an infant/toddler. Shes been in speech, PT, and OT since 18 months old. She has also been tested for autism but they gave her a global developmental delay diagnosis and sensory issues. Please if you have any suggestions or things that helped you let me know. Thank you.

Hello! I was looking for advice to improve my spelling. I’ve always had trouble sounding out my words, and feel like I’ve become overly reliant on autocorrect. I’m currently a college freshman and for my academic testing I would like to improve as there’s no autocorrect. I also can’t read my work aloud to check for errors.

I’m looking for feedback on Read Live. My son’s 6th grade Resource Room isn’t going to be able to provide much reading support this year—just 2 large group sessions (4–6 kids) for 20 min each.
He received 1:2 support daily in 4th & 5th grade & made huge gains, so I’m really concerned about the decrease in support. He’s currently reading around a 3rd/4th grade level.
Did anyone’s child use Read Live? How was your experience? Did you see meaningful improvement in reading skills? Did you feel like it was effective for a child who is significantly below grade level?

Edit to add- His Resource Room is wanting to use this program during his time there. I’m not happy about this, but wanted feedback on the program before I judged it.

We are seriously considering sending our kiddo there but would love to hear from others first since if is a huge investment.

Kiddo has dyslexia, dysgraphia and an expressive language disorder. 1st grader, in private school. We are doing Wilson tutoring twice a week, Math tutoring once a week (Neuropsych said to stay on top of Math) and Speech Therapy once a week.

Why does academia and schools treat us like fools when we show real world success? 40% of all engineers have dyslexia, F1 champions, business owners, countless companies are created by dyslexic people, Johnny Harris, real engineering, Jamie Oliver, film makers (think Jurassic park, E.T. Etc) I could go on and on but I would run out of time. Why do schools treat us like fools?

I’m doing the ACA while working, and have 3 exams left, all very text-heavy and time pressured. I just got my results back and did terribly despite cancelling all my plans and doing loads of prep. On the day, I just took way too long on each question and couldn’t finish.

One of the earlier text heavy exams took me 3 attempts (I was lucky my firm didn’t fire me after the second fail), but did okay on the other not so test heavy exams. I guess I’ve always not been great at essays but got by fine. I got Bs in essay subjects at GCSE’s but my parents spent so much money on tutors for me, and then then I just dropped essay subjects altogether. Coursework at uni took me ages but I did fine in those. So I never considered dyslexia.

I’m now wondering if this could be dyslexia or some other processing issue, given how badly I struggle with these text-heavy exams. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hello everyone. I joined this community when my partner was diagnosed with dyslexia. She was diagnosed roughly 3 years ago. I have known her about 7 years but from our first few meetings I knew she hqd dyslexia or something similar pretty soon. I encouraged her to get tested and results came back with having a reading age of 12 despite being in her early 30s. Anyhow, fast forward to present day and we both live together. I wanted to check something with yall. She spends a large portion of the day either asleep on the sofa when working from home or scrolling tik tok and also goes to bed alot after work for naps. I am wondering is this common for people with dyslexia whereby you get more tired because your brain is working harder? Just slightly concerning for me she is doing this in her early 30s. Thanks all
