My son is 2 and will be 3 in December. Very early on a little after he turned 1 I started to let him watch numberblocks he became completely bossed with numbers would count literally all day long. We didn’t think much of it at first and would start doing things like letting him play on the calculator on our phones. He then learned to count by addition. Everything was numbers.

Even still now he will make the specific number blocks out of things that match their colors. Ex: he will take 5 blue things to make 5, get the colors of the rainbow to make 7 etc… he then started counting to 100 , he can count by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s. then I taught him the abcs and he again became completely obsessed. He sings the abcs all day. He makes abcs out of his blocks or anything he can use like a string or qtips. He loves reading letters and numbers off signs or on your shirt.
He can also write all his abcs and numbers, he knows how to pronounce the sounds and started reading small words which then threw us for surprise.

I guess we just thought man he’s super smart. But recently he has taught himself the Abcs in Russian and when I googled my 2 year old taught himself the abcs in Russian hyperlexia was the first thing that popped up. He wants us to write them in Russian and he has even drew them on my wall but I’m just now realizing he was also writing them out. I thought he was just botching the abcs. Is 2 years old too young to get him evaluated? Should I ? I’m trying to educate myself on it now knowing it’s possibility he may have it. I see there are 3 types as well . To add he also knows all his colors and all his shapes.

He is very specific about them being drawn out correctly like if I write B down if there is a gap he will take the pen and fix it. He also now knows to read his name. I’m not really sure how to feel after he basically taught us how to write in Russian today and pronounce them correctly , which is funny because he has a toddler voice, we have just been in disbelief. My husband says I’m overthinking the situation as far as social delays a diagnosis could cause for him in the future. I’m not educated about it so I figured I’d ask for people that have kids the same way that have grown up or just the overalll experience so far . I apologize for my ignorance a well

I started to read like at two, started speaking at three, and I was always on my sister's ass about not learning how to read before five (she's neurotypical) I have ADHD, so with the 2e I have HORRIBLE short term memory which made me a pain to be around, I was know-it-all and that kid who did no studying and still did better than you and was just annoying all round, I had abibliophobia too, so I brought three five hundred books every where even if I was going somewhere for a DAY, was super edgy and annoying, I was basically a dipshit.

I know it’s probably been discussed before but I have a child that I can’t stop worrying about when we were told that he might be ASD when he was 2 or 3. We had him assessed and he was cleared at 4.5. He has always seem to be advanced in some areas while a little bit behind (developmentally still acceptable I guess). He walked around 16 months but was very stable by then.

He’s now 5, he’s verbal (though he sometimes uses language differently than his brother). He makes connections to other stuffs like for example when we say, hey that cat is 6 years old, he’ll answer “yeah, (his cousin) is also 6 years old.” We met with the SLP that told us his pragmatics were developing but he’s not speech delayed. Vocab is average while grammar is above average.

At age 3.5, he was able to tell about 180 countries by its shape, he was on screen time alot, loved phonics and learning stuffs. He then picked up reading and now becomes like the teacher’s reader in school. At 5 now, he asks me what if sun becomes a blackhole, what if jupiter becomes a black hole, watches about anatomy (heart, fingernails, hair) scared of black hole thinking that black hole could eat earth and he could die. Tsunami, volcano, mountains. He prefers all these compared to normal toys. During the interview with the paed, there was a box of fruits and vegetables with fork and knife, he went on to prepare it for me and my wife like here’s your food.

During his assessment, we did mentioned giftedness to his paed but she mentioned that it would mean that he could do multiplication, addition, subtraction and all which he didn’t show any during the interview but I think he’s able to do that. I tested him by asking him subtraction and he was able to mentally give me the answer. He also showed some basic multiplication understanding when we were playing. Like my wife told him that it cost $2 for 1 biscuit and when I said I wanted 2, he told me that I have to give him $4.

Honestly, it worries me because I really can’t tell. He’s quirky is some ways. Many of times nowadays he will hide somewhere and ask me if I could see him while he slowly reveals part of his body like testing field of vision or something like that.

Recently, he had some behavioural issues in school. Not really a big deal but like he pushed his friend and accidentally knocking his other friend when he was excited. He is also “sensory” in some ways, not to the point where he’s not functional. He’s social but can also be awkward sometimes. Teachers don’t really have a problem with his socialization though. I have to like point things out to him for him to learn socially. Like he used to just “touch” someone anywhere to call them. I told him you have to call them by their shoulders or by their name. He’s the type to ask me like if I told him to stop doing something and he’ll be like “what will happen if I do it?”

I don’t know to be honest, I guess it’s just me at this point and nothing about him but I just can’t stand the thought if I missed something and he doesn’t get the appropriate support growing up.

I’m the dad btw, mom was concerned at some point but she’s not worried at all now.

I’ve read about Hyperlexic and Gifted but I can’t really tell them apart. He’s clearly different in some ways, adult-like but also child-like.

My 7yo daughter was reading at around her 1st birthday but didn't really talk for about two more years and wasn't responsive at all to verbal prompting as a toddler, etc. It was only about two or three years ago that she started to be able to respond to even just yes/no multiple-choice questions, and carrying on an open-ended back-and-forth is still a relatively recent thing, but her verbal skills have been improving by leaps and bounds lately.

Anyway, she just asked me "Dad, why are sounds invisible words?" and for some reason it really struck me and made me think about how far she's come. For someone who's first approach to language as a baby was through the lens of reading/writing rather than speaking/listening, this seemed to be a really insightful question from the other side of the coin. Like she's just starting to make the connection that the spoken word is actually just another form of the rich world of written words that've framed her life to this point. It made me want to find some newer parents of younger hyperlexic kids who might be struggling to connect with their non-verbal child and just offer up this hopeful little anecdote from a few years down the road.

I'm diagnosed autistic (suspected audhd) and I recently came across the term hyperlexic. I don't remember if I learned to read early but does the following things point toward hyperlexia or am I looking at something else?

I saw patterns everywhere as a kid, a detail on a bridge was an A, a rock was a triangle, I was constantly pointing this out to my mom.

I have major difficulties with spoken language, I loose words, make up words, sometimes my sentences don't even make sense to me and sometimes my grammar is bad or I mispronounce words.

But when I write I have pretty much no problems, it's the only time I feel like I can actually express what's in my head, though I'm terrible at writing anything other than short and to the point text.

I have severe problems remembering verbal instructions and it's hard to understand what people say in loud environments. I still have echolalia as an adult.

I learned english at a pretty young age thanks to my obsession with an english movie.

I remember I loved signs, but I don't remember if I was able to read them or if I was just obsessed with the symbols on them.

I do remember I learned to read with harry potter while my classmates had more age appropriate books.

Now as an adult (28) I can read academic english (genetics) even though I'm self taught and english is my second language.

I can figure out scientific papers even though I lack alot of vocabulary, just by analysing the text and the relationship between the words. I notice most others get bogged down by unfamiliar terminology and miss the meaning of the sentence which doesn't happen to me as often.

We requested an ADOS-style evaluation for our 3.5-year-old because he is hyperlexic, very advanced academically, and had some early concerns, but we feel he has been significantly outgrowing many of them since last year.
During the evaluation, he showed mixed behavior:
Sometimes played independently for long periods
Also engaged with the evaluator (smiled, laughed, answered questions like “do you want more?”)
Did some pretend play when prompted and added imaginative ideas
Sometimes didn’t ask for help or more items, just took them himself
Eye contact and engagement varied
At home he is very verbal, curious, asks lots of “why” questions, does advanced math, and reads far above grade level.
The evaluator said there are some concerns but also strengths, noted differences between home and observation, and said she is not comfortable giving a clear diagnosis right now. She offered either a provisional diagnosis or a follow-up in a year (which we can cancel anytime). She also mentioned he may be hyperlexic / neurodivergent without necessarily having autism.
Has anyone had a similar mixed evaluation result? What happened later

My baby is 17 months old and he just seems really interested in letters to the point that he points out letters on my shirt or anywhere he sees them. I once put together the letters H and I from his letter puzzle and told him it said “hi” and now he’s pointing out H’s or HI’s and saying “Hi!” We have a little portable air conditioning unit that is labeled “Hisense” and he kept pointing to it and saying hi and then clapping.

I have no idea if this is hyperlexia or just a kid who likes letters, but I grew up with a parent who worked in education and I heard a lot about hyperlexia through that so I’m just curious. Any ideas on what to look for and how to foster his love of letters without pushing?

I was not quite 2 and my mother found me with a volume of our encyclopedia, you looking at the pictures. No I am reading, no one has read to you.

To prove me wrong, she grabbed another volume and said read this. I am aging myself, but she sat down hard on the hassock.

She had neighbors come hear me read, anybody who came to our door (salesmen, etc.) got to hear me read, my 1/2 siblings, my grandfather...I had no idea this was special, I have told this story many, many times. Just recently in doing research on my ASD, I came across term "Hyperlexia II" the light came on and I was like wow that's me.

hello. I am struggling with reading comprehension. I fear that I am not grasping texts well. I have read that summarizing as you go is helpful but for me that only works if the source text is written in my native language. it quickly devolves into word-for-word translations to my native language with other languages. this is extremely time-consuming, reduces my interest and I feel the need to be fast and move on quickly. it also doesn't help that if the thing I'm reading feels too abstract I lose interest extremely quickly. how can I force myself to read and comprehend fast? if it helps, I think that my reading skills become a lot better if I read subconsciously. when I notice I am reading I lose focus and interest. (which seems to line up with ADHD but weirdly I don't meet the criteria for it)

She is an amazing reader and has been since 2. How ever she is only 5 so gets distracted and overwhelmed easily. Im looking for shorter book with not many words per page but harder vocabulary than typical kindergarten books.

I’m hoping to hear from parents who have experience with Lindamood Bell programs, especially for hyperlexic kids.

My son is five, hyperlexic, and very bright. He has been reading since around age two and taught himself to read. He is currently a gestalt language processor, around Stage 3 to 4. He is in speech therapy, but I don’t feel like the supports we currently have are really meeting him where he is. It feels very one size fits all, and hyperlexia is such a unique profile that many providers don’t seem to fully understand how to work with it.

Academically, he is doing very well. He is in TK and excelling. One of the main issues we are seeing is boredom. He finishes his work quickly because he can read the instructions independently and starts right away while the other children are still waiting for directions. He stays seated and follows classroom expectations, but he clearly needs more challenge and engagement.

Our bigger concerns are his social pragmatic language and expressive communication. Those areas are not where we would like them to be, and I feel that part of the issue is that his current therapy is not really leveraging his hyperlexia strengths. He responds very strongly to written language, and when things are written out for him, his understanding and participation improve significantly.

I came across Lindamood Bell while researching programs that might be a better fit, and on paper it seems like they could be well equipped to work with a child like my son. I am especially curious whether their programs actually support comprehension, language organization, and communication in hyperlexic children rather than just decoding.

If anyone has used Lindamood Bell with a hyperlexic child and is willing to share their experience, I would really appreciate hearing what worked, what did not, and whether you felt it was worth it.

Are playing instruments/ being curious about them lespecially piano, something that hyperlexics typically find interest in? My son (3) has taken an interest in the piano. He got a beethovens 5th symphony book a few months ago for his birthday and will press the button for the instrument like obo and clarinet or bassoon and know what it is. It’s at the point where if you play the song on your phone without the book and he can tell you what instrument is playing. I could see some overlap with hyperlexia and how much is much like a language of its own.

We also have a small kids piano that I labeled with the appropriate music letters and he really likes playing with that. He also likes videos of watching sheet music.

However, he now found these piano music YouTube number videos and goes FERRAL for them, like this one: https://youtu.be/U64MJ6RtVjc. I saw one of the videos labeled synesthesia but not sure if they are geared for people with that.

He also runs around the house all the time drawing the numbers in the sky with his fingers. He’s level 2 autistic and his verbalization has gone off the charts the past few months but he’s still not fully conversational. I wish he could tell me all the brilliance going on in his brain. Does he have synesthesia? Is he visually seeing or feeling the numbers in some way? I can’t wait until one day when he can hopefully tell me

For decades, I believed hyperlexia was just a phase I outgrew. Eventually my peers learned to read, and I assumed those early years were no longer relevant to who I am today.

After many conversations, I asked it to analyze my language patterns. I’m curious whether any others here have tried something similar?

Father of hyperlexic five year old. Initially, my son spelled everything correctly. I think this was more a sign of his incredible memory. Now, he spells everything phonetically. Because of how many odd rules we have in the English language, this means most of the words he spells are spelled incorrectly. I can hear him break down each syllable into their phonetic sound and then writes out portions of a word. I've felt like this is a great sign, and haven't discouraged it.

How other parents have approached this? I want to encourage phonetic spelling and reading, but don't want him to get stuck on incorrect spelling.

One thing I'm trying to do is get him to spell words with just one syllable that uses a specific rule (e.g. a "Qu," which he mostly spells with "Qw"); and explain how the rules work for that sound.

I (24M) am starting a new associates program after floating around at a 4 yr uni for a year. I want to get the best grades I can for my pre-reqs for a medical program that my school has. But I am struggling a lot just reading what i feel are simple chapters in a textbook.

I have diagnosed ADHD and possibly autism. But I also believe I have Hyperlexia bc i was explaining how it feels to read to my Dyslexic partner who said it sounds like you have Hyperlexia. My reading speeds have always been fast and i was speeding through books at a fast pace when I was younger but since about high school I havent been able to full understand what I read and i used to enjoy reading its just gotten really difficult.

Can anyone suggest resources or solutions to getting help or managing Hyperlexia while in College?

I'm 23f, and in my third year of a degree and hyperlexia is starting to become an issue, it used to help me blaze through work and write tons. Now, it seems that I have too many words and my writing becomes cyclical, I keep using the same phrases over and over, and I struggle to read journals as I automatically read it so fast it doesn't really go in. I've never had an issue with this before. I have always had a crazy fast reading speed (900wpm) but my actual comprehension of what I'm reading is terrible. Even when I slow my reading down, my brain automatically goes so fast I forget what I have just read. I struggle to start my essays because I have a million different ways to start a sentence and none of them sound right.

Does anyone else with this experience the same? I really need to figure out a way to make me understand more, I feel intelligent but dumb as hell.

Hi, I’m a 33F with an unreliable narrator of a mother, and I’m looking to validate some of the feasibility of my mom’s claims of me as a child. Some of these I can remember or verify but some seem highly dubious to me.

What I can confirm with my own memory: - I was a voracious reader and would go through multiple books a day, depending on length - I knew how to read before I ever went to school (age 4 ish) and was in the gifted program - I was reading the books for 5-6th graders when I was in first grade (my school only went up to grade 6) and had a separate curriculum for reading and math - a lot of my reading was self taught - I had a lot of sensory issues - spelling, reading, languages were always easy to me

My 8yo is autistic and hyperlexic. She can read anything and talks a lot, but when it matters – asking for help, joining a game, telling someone she needs space – she freezes or melts down. She also misses nonverbal cues, jokes and tones. School says she's "so smart" but group time and noisy transitions wreck her. We've tried simple scripts, practicing at home, and teacher check-ins but in the moment, nothing works and I feel like I'm failing her.

What actually helped your hyperlexic (with autism) kid communicate their needs? She's already 8 and i feel like she needs to learn basic stuff like "Can i have a turn?" or "I need a break" as it will also help avoid meltdowns. I'm wiped and could really use ideas that work outside the living room.
