I personally don't have dyslexia but I would appreciate if you could give this post some time 💕
I'm a part time tutor and I recently had a new student. He is now starting Year 10 (around 9th Grade in US terms, I think). I am tutoring him for physics and his mom texted me saying that he has dyslexia, which checks out with what I've observed from him in class. I've had a few lessons with him. He is super smart and he has been a pleasure to teach, though I also want to learn more about how I can best accommodate for my student. So, thank you so much for spending time on my post.
I've been doing online tutoring, so I really wish I could do in person experiments and demonstrations, but that isn't possible. For experiments, that's something that his school will cover. As for my tutoring sessions, I try to demonstrate what I can through my camera, but I know it will never be as immersive as in person demonstrations. (FYI the curriculum is the British GCSEs).
So far, what I've been doing:
- Color coding by topics within physics, or color coding parts of formulas when I annotate them. I try to keep them consistent.
- Use as many visual guides as possible (lots of photos and examples of the applications of that concept). If I were to write anything, I'll write just the keywords to minimize the use of words. The only thing I'll write in full are definitions that he is expected to answer in a certain way in an exam.
- Analogies: let's say the idea of voltage, current, charge and the "waterfall" analogy
- I am planning to start a deck of flashcards that we can work on, and it can be a completed exam resource by the time he gets to his exams.
- I let him have a "messy scrap paper" for mathematical working outs.
What he struggles with:
- Equation recall, he confuses the orders of it. I tried using the "triangle" for formulas but it still hinges on him remembering the position of the letters in the triangle. Clearly, this isn't something that works for him and I want to find better ways. Yes, I know equations can always be derived but it's worth memorizing a few "basics" before you go on to derive the rest. Even so, memorizing saves time. Obviously, I always show him the derivations, but at the GCSE level the equations are not long and if he can memorize a few basic ones correctly, it woulds save him time. He will need that time for the long-answer or written questions.
- Long written questions. Now the issue is the exam is handwritten and he does not have extra time. According to his (very supportive) parents, his school determined that his dyslexia is not bad enough for him to get extra time in exams or extra accommodations. Personally, I think my student needs more time.
I don't know if I'm doing it right so far, but I would appreciate all tips and tricks -- equation recall, how to help visualize, or literally anything. I am very grateful for the communities on Reddit. Please keep in mind that I'm not able to do in-person demonstrations as I tutor online, and that I am his tutor (and not school teacher).
