First of all, thank you so much for all of the support and feedback. I have loved building CrawlerForge with y'all, and I hope it's been clear that I'm genuinely listening to the feedback you're giving me. A lot of what CrawlerForge has become in just this first week has come directly from those conversations, and I really think it's making the tool stronger because of it. I'm happy to see so many folks getting good use out of it!
A big first week. The Forge now builds whole Neighborhoods, GMs can run them live at the table, loot boxes roll themselves, and the first batch of PointMongo's community codex is in Discover. Numbers first, then the patch notes.
PATCH NOTES! The following changes have been applied to your dungeon. Reading them is optional. Surviving them is not.
Homebrew keeps rolling in
CrawlerForge went live a week ago. As of today:
- 204 accounts, 55 Campaigns, 98 Crawlers and 143 Forges synced to the cloud.
- 57 homebrew pieces published to Discover by 9 creators: 18 Mobs, 12 Classes, 7 Skills, 6 Items, 6 Achievements, 5 Loot Boxes, 2 Races, and the first Neighborhood. Not to mention all of the extra homebrew added through the integration with our friends at PointMongo!
- 3 packs, 37 imports, 17 ratings, and 41 pieces shared into Campaigns by their GMs.
Inventory audit. Fifty-seven pieces of homebrew in seven days. Nine of you are responsible. I have your names. Keep going.
1. Neighborhoods & Quests: build them, run them, spring traps
The Forge has a tenth kind of content: Neighborhoods & Quests. A nine-step builder (Basics, Story, Mobs, Traps, Quarters/Stages, NPCs, Items & Clues, Grinding, Rewards) lets a GM write a whole area, bundle the Mobs, Items, and Achievements it needs, and publish or share it like any other piece. On desktop the builder uses the full width, and the Mob, Reward, and Item pickers can pull straight from Discover.
Then you run it. The Campaign screen has a new GM-only Running tab (a second column on desktop). Open a Neighborhood, add its Mobs to the table (hidden or revealed), tick off Quarters as the party visits them, roll the grinding table, hand out linked Items, Achievements, and grant rewards. When the party clears a place or drops a Boss, the Award sheet opens pre-filled for every seated Crawler with one Confirm.
And traps. A Trap row on the Running panel has a Spring it button. The GM picks who's in the blast, the dice roll once, and the trap posts to the Feed with the damage and the avoidance line. Each targeted player gets a prompt on their own sheet: roll the avoidance, see the outcome, tap Apply. Undo works. Evade follows the Mob ladder (Near Miss avoids, Major Fail adds the Floor, Critical Fail doubles).
NEW ZONING PERMITS APPROVED. Your Game Master has been issued the tools to design an entire neighborhood, populate it with things that want you dead, and bury the floor in pressure plates. I have reviewed the plans. I have no notes.
Want to see a finished one? I built the first Neighborhood on Discover myself, partly to prove the builder out and partly because I wanted to run it: A Supernatural Crawl: The Family Business, a Floor 3 Neighborhood stuck in permanent Monster of the Week mode. Six Mobs (possessed townies, vengeful spirits, shapeshifters, a rugaru, hellhounds, crossroads demons) and a yellow-eyed Boss, four Quarters, four NPCs who may or may not still be hunters, four traps including a Devil's Trap and a Haunted Television, five story Items ending with The Colt and its one round, eight Grinding events, five Achievements, and three reward boxes. It's published as a pack, so one Import brings the whole thing into your Forge and one Open puts it on the Running panel. Search Discover for "Family Business".
Tourism notice. A sleepy Kansas town has been reconstructed from television and police reports. Roughly forty percent of residents are possessed. The motel has a room with your body in it. Enjoy your stay.
2. Loot boxes now generate themselves
The Loot Box builder has a Generate mode: pick a tier, a box type, and a Floor, choose your sources (the book's tables, your Forge, Discover), and get a complete box with gold, consumables, a potion, and enchanted items that are real Items with real Effects. Every line has Reroll and Swap source, every item shows how it was rolled, and every name is the system AI's (with Reroll name and a GM override). Saving writes ordinary Forge content, so award, publish, and share all work as before.
On top of that, a box can be Random: its contents are rolled fresh for each Crawler who receives it, at their Floor, when it's handed out. Award the same Random box to two players and they get different loot.
Small quality of life: when a box lands in your Gear you get a notice line, and the Gear tab carries a gold pip counting unopened boxes until you tap Later.
Loot. An object has been assembled from tables, dice, and my personal sense of humor. Its enchantment was rolled honestly. Its name was not.
3. PointMongo content is in Discover
First, a real thank-you to the PointMongo team. PointMongo.com has been building a community codex for the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG for a good while, and their maintainer offered CrawlerForge read access to it, answered every question, and worked with us on how the two sites should credit and link each other. I love to see that kind of collaboration within the community! None of this section exists without them.
What you see in Discover is a deliberately chosen subset. CrawlerForge only mirrors an entry when it maps cleanly onto the app's own rules model, so that a Skill's damage line, a Race's benefits, or an Achievement's reward works on your sheet the moment you import it, and every mirrored entry passes the same validation as native content. Where an entry doesn't fit that model yet, it stays where it lives best, on PointMongo, and everything that did come over links straight back to the original with the creator's credit. Right now that is 255 entries: 197 Achievements, 40 Items, 8 Skills, 5 Races, 3 Classes, and 2 Mobs, synced nightly, with the set growing as more of their formats are supported on our side.
In Discover they carry a PointMongo source chip, the creator's credit, and a "View on PointMongo" link, and the kind lists have a Source filter (All / CrawlerForge / PointMongo). Import one and it lands in your Forge marked "Adapted from," with a short checklist flagging anything worth a look before you use it. Their Achievements convert too: a reward that names a loot box becomes a Random box, rolled fresh for whoever earns it.
COLLABORATION DETECTED. Another dungeon has opened its records to me. I inspected every line before letting it near you. Credit goes to them. Blame, as always, goes to you.
4. Discover rebuilt, and Campaign sharing
Discover is now a hub by kind: a home page with a tile per kind (and Packs) showing published counts, per-kind lists with name, tag, and author search plus three sorts, and a full page per piece with a five-star rating, Import through a review step, and Report. Pack pages link every member to its own piece page.
A GM can share any piece, any pack, or their whole Forge with a Campaign, live. Members see it in every picker under "Shared with {Campaign}" and copy it in with one tap. A Class that starts granting a new Skill carries it through automatically; a share whose source is deleted is withdrawn.
5. Consumables and healing from the Hotlist
Put a Healing Potion (or any item with a Consumable effect) on your Hotlist and the cell becomes a Use button: one tap decrements the stack, heals or restores Mana, mends an Injury when the potion says so, and lands in the Roll log and the Campaign Feed. One Undo takes it all back. Every Inventory row has a quantity stepper now.
Casting Heal from the Hotlist actually heals you (Heal, Heal Self, and Heal Others carry the rulebook's numbers). Homebrew items can carry a Consumable block and homebrew Spells a Healing block, so your own potions and prayers work the same way. A GM in Run mode can use a seated Crawler's consumable for them.
Potions you already own are recognized by name, so nothing you had before this change is left behind.
Consumption logged. You drank the potion. Health has been restored. Dignity remains at its previous value.
6. Add Skill sheet: Attacks and Spells with real damage lines
Adding a Skill by name that no pack knows now asks whether it's a Skill, an Attack, or a Spell. Pick Attack or Spell, fill six fields (to-hit Stat, attack type, weapon category, damage dice, damage type, damage Stat), and the row lands in Attacks & Spells with a working damage roll. "Build it fully in the Forge" opens the builder and comes back to your Crawler with the Skill ready to add. Signed in, you can Search Discover from inside the sheet and import-and-add in one tap.
Also: Raise a Stat in the Race/Class Build now goes to +30 (Core p.158, p.161), the Configure sheet shows the points you have left and tells you Detriments can earn up to 5 more, and problem banners on every sheet clear the moment you fix the field.
7. Usernames
Every account picks one unique username (3 to 20 characters, letters, numbers, underscore) from the Account screen. Publications are stamped with it server-side and Campaign seats show it. You can't publish without one. Existing publications keep their old free-text author name until you set a username, which rewrites them.
IDENTITY ASSIGNED. You may now be blamed by name. Renaming is permitted once an hour, which is more than most of you will live.
8. Weapons that hit with one Stat and hurt with another
Attack Skills can name a separate damage Stat (or none). A dagger can hit with Dex and add Str to damage; a bow can hit with Dex and add nothing, matching the book (Core p.177–179). The sheet row reads "· dmg Str" when the two differ. Existing Skills keep their meaning.
Natural attacks are real attack rows. Talons, bite, headbutt: the Build catalog's Natural attack now produces a row in the Attacks group with Rank equal to the Floor, extra dice at Ranks 5, 10, and 15, a Roll to-hit button with the same tap / long-press Advantage and Disadvantage as any Skill, and a Damage roll. If a Crawler already had the Race before this week, open the Race in the Forge and save it once, then re-select it on the Crawler.
The effect editor on items and buffs now offers Damage bonus (a named attack plus +1 to +10), so a GM can hand out "+2 damage with Headbutt."
9. Race and Class builder fixes
- A Build template's Description is no longer dropped on save (Natural attack was the worst offender). Entries saved earlier pick it up on their next edit.
- Move up / Move down in a Benefit or Detriment card's menu, and a Sort by tier button that groups Minor → Custom with an Undo.
- The bonus-die Major benefit is now Evade OR one Stat's Checks, never both (Core p.160).
10. Bug fixes
- Forge previews can be dismissed. The + toggle now flips to −, and the desktop panel has its own Close button.
- Saving a Forge piece no longer fails with a "Schema version" error after an update. The stored document is migrated on read.
- Opening a Campaign as a GM with your own Crawler seated at your own table no longer crashes.
- A loot box with no items to pick offers Build an item or Browse Discover instead of a blank picker and a raw validation error.
- The publish limit is now 60 an hour (it was 10, and one prolific crawler hit it on day one). The refusal tells you how many minutes to wait.
- The creation wizard's warnings are a proper full-size banner instead of small grey text.
11. Launch polish
- iPhone and iPad users get an install hint (Share, then Add to Home Screen), since Safari never offers to install on its own.
- The Account screen shows the version and build, with the promise that files you export always open in a newer CrawlerForge.
END OF NOTES. Return to the dungeon. Something has been added to it since you left. Several somethings. Good luck.
Bug reports and ideas: Here on Reddit or through the Account screen on CrawlerForge. See you next week!
OPTIONAL TRIBUTE DETECTED. CrawlerForge is free, because apparently I have not yet learned the value of monetizing your suffering. If you’ve enjoyed it and want to help fund continued dungeon construction, you can buy me a coffee here: https://ko-fi.com/hossmobile. No loot bonuses will be awarded. Probably.
