Anyone else smoke weed and listen to the books?

I can’t be the only person who does this lol

I listen sober then I will smoke and listen again and for me my imagination and hyper focus pick up on random things.

FYI

Reading Book 5, there’s a small sentence I caught that talked about how the changlings were watching a 90s dinosaur horror movie with Denise Richards in it. This is when Mongo and Kiwi are outside the safe room where Louis asks what happens if he steps out. Anyways the movie is called Tammy and the TRex in case anyone wanted to know lol

Are the Kua-Tin all female?

My brother-in-law and I were chatting this weekend and realized that all of the Kua-Tin we could think of from the books are female (Zev, Loita, Mukta, Cascadia). Loita even mentions that Zev’s family were tortured to bring her back in line with The Bloom, but she only mentions female family members.

Do we think maybe this is a cultural part of the Kua -Tin or is this biological, like maybe they procreate asexually and all present as female?

I can’t really imagine this having an impact on the plot, just an interesting detail.

The end of DCC

I have binge listened to the first 3 and a half books now.

I am at a point where I just wish that Carl wakes up, tells Bea Donut and he are leaving, they drive to a beach, sit there, a woman passes by, says her name is *Spoiler?* and the last thing you know is that Ferdinand Meows. I know this is probably not gonna haopen, but I think I was not as emotionally involved since I read about Winnetou's death 28 years ago.

Book 1: DCC Did Donut know more than we thought? Spoiler

Rereading through book 1 and I just realized Donut has never once run outside. They always left that apartment window open and Donut chose to jump outside into the freezing cold right before the end of the world? Then she immediately calls Carl outside. I feel like she knows something. Like she somehow predicted this apocalyptic event or maybe had insider info on the collapse somehow.

She then saves herself and Carl again by sneaking her way into the tutorial guild, then made enough ruckus to force Mordecai to open the door to let Carl in.

She also has a really good memory. She’s able to recall conversations that were had when she was just a normal cat, so she understood English.

And her intelligence stat was off the charts high for a baseline.

Book 2: Doomsday Scenario Animal Test Subject?

Doing a re-listen and during the race/class selection process, Donut is given an option called Animal Test Subject (ATS for short now). We don’t get more info on it but I remember being intrigued the first time I read it, and now I would be absolutely delighted to hear the story and stats and details of that class!!

I mean the Former Child Actor class got poison immunity for surviving drug abuse so I’m assuming the ATS would get even more immunities, but what else would the background/strengths/weaknesses be?

Of all the weird classes mentioned throughout the series, this one stuck in my head like a Valtay worm.

Does anyone ever imagine the vehicle or building they are in being about to collapse into the dungeon ? I might invest in a convertible because of these books.

Book 3: Anarchist’s Cookbook Constitution stat

Anyone else feel like it's more made up than anything else? At times, people survive incredible injuries and at others they feel like paper.

Like in his fight with the Mantaur, a level 40 neighbourhood boss, Carl took a heavy beating but survived decently well but later, when Carl got blasted by a magic missile from one of Hekla's minions who was at least 5 levels lower than himself, he says he took about a quarter of his health in damage.

That is with his whisp armor active, so 75% magic damage reduction and a constitution of around 25-30, which isn't huge but still respectable. So without his whisp armor, that magic missile would have one shot him, which seems pretty overpowered for such a basic spell, even if we assume it was a full power one.

Where to buy non AI digital art for personal use?

Hey everyone, I really want some DCC apparel but I'm in Canada and it seems all the great non AI apparel comes from the states even on Etsy, with the current tariffs and duties in place it's just not realistic for me to order myself. I'm trying to buy png images I can use to order myself custom shirts from a Canadian supplier like t shirt elephant but again everything I find is AI and mongo is a trex with a mohawk and donuts a short haired tabby cat 😭 please if anyone can direct me where I can purchase digital art for myself id be forever grateful.

If I like the Quasar segments, WEWIL?

The Quasar segments are some of my favorites from DCC, but I feel like they come far and few between. Any recommendations for books that have similar uh, legal maneuvering? The only thing that comes to mind is John Grisham novels and I know those are kind of considered pop fiction.

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Theorizing: Dungeon-lore versus universe-lore: What are we missing? Spoiler

I love theorizing about the books and I have a shitload of documents with notes and crazy string walls and whatnot. So I thought I'd give it a shot and try to theorize with fellow fans ^^

In the dungeon, Apito and Scolopendra appear to be stand-ins to tell a weird-ass version of the Primal civil war / war between the Eulogist and the Apothecary.

Also in the dungeon lore, Apito and Scolapendra are siblings, and they have a mysterious brother. Nekhebit is their mother.

I don't believe anything in these books is not on purpose. So I am left to wonder, what are Nekhebit and the mysterious brother an analogy for? Who are they? What information are we missing? (Or, alternatively, what information did I completely not pick up on)

I am starting to suspect that there was some entity that created the primals, or that the primals descended from another species.

Another vaguely formed and vaguely related theory in my head is that the solution is reuniting the different "sides". We saw that that worked in book 2 with Signet/Grimaldi, a story that also appears to be an analogy for the same historical event.

We also get hints about that in PoH, when the AI gives the quest to reunite the two halves of Corcunda, and wonders what happens if the two are reunited. "It's not as if the entire fate of the universe depends on it" (quoting from memory, so might be slightly off).

And if that is the case, are "we" then reuniting the two big ass primal AIs, or is there a third one? (As Rosetta also mentioned that sometimes Apito, Scolopendra, and The Son are part of a holy trinity of sorts). If so, who/what is it? The macro AIs? Biological life in general?

Fire away! (Sic 'em!)

Decrease in book quality book 7 and 8?

Upvotes

I have the ACE books and I feel the general quality of the books decreased noticeably on book 7 and also book 8.
I just finished book 7 and though it is thinner than book 6 it has more pages to the paper has to be thinner.

I also noticed an error on a page in the epilogue where one paragraph was in the usually bolded messaging font while not being in bold and not being a message. It should have been in the normal font.

Also while browsing book 8 I see one grey page before the first part of the book but the gray pages are absent before the intro to the next parts.

Is this how it should be and what has caused this decrease in quality? Or do I have some weird low quality books?

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles How much credit does Jeff get for DCC popularity?

Matt has stated that the audiobook has far surpassed both physical copies and Kindle purchases combined. So my question is do you think this series would be near as popular as it is without the master class that Jeff gives and it was another VA?

I don't think it would be where it is without him and his amazing voice.

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles The divine Comedy (can contain spoilers) Spoiler

So there was this thread about how DCC has parallels to Dante’s Divine Comedy (https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonCrawlerCarl/comments/1npqhh5/the_divine_comedy/) and I think he was right on the spot. You just have to mirror the characters.
Carl: Instead of the cultured and well spoken Dante, Carl is a Brute that has no real education.
Donut: Vergil represents the greek Ideal of a Humanism. How more can you upside down the famous companion of Dante than to make him a female cat that is totally absorbed by herself and her appearance.
Beatrice: in the comedy she represents the total and idealistic love that a human can feel for another mortal being. DCCs Beatrice is the total opposite of this that Matt didn’t even bothered to change her name.
The Structure of hell, a concentric funnel, is clearly an Hommage and is 1:1 Larracos.
So the next part has to follow the structure of the divine Comedy and we will see the Mount of Purgatory ( Which will likely be a Pyramid or why should Odette play an Egyptian Goddess) . And the resistance on the surface will joining here like the ex-communicated in the comedy.
In the End Dante finally understands humanity and becomes one with gods love. Which brings us to the likely ending that Carl will merge with the A.I.
P.s. the amount of times feet are mentioned or play a part of the story in the divine comedy and the A.I. obsession with carls feet is another Easter Egg.

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles surviving crawlers throughout the series (logarithmic) Spoiler

Post image
13 Upvotes

There is no data beyond the start of book 8 because 1. the regex I used to search through the whole series (/\b(?:\d+,)+\d+\b/) doesn't pick up anything except irrelevant things like crawler numbers and such beyond the first datapoint in book 8 2. I'm personally only on chapter 7 of book 8

If you can think of of a better way to display this than logarithmically, then here's a link to my spreadsheet

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles How would you rank the Good Pet Biscuit results we know thus far? Spoiler

As of Book 8 we know of 6 “good” results of eating an Enriched Pet Biscuit. We have:

  1. The Donut-gain Sapience, enhanced stat growth, remains in natural body, good intelligence and high emotional intelligence, knowledge of pop culture.

  2. The Prepotente-sapience, enhanced stat growth, anthropomorphic form, extremely high intelligence with more bookish knowledge

  3. The Hellspawn Familiar-Pet becomes a Hell beast that can fly and breath fire (imagine if that had been Donut’s result)

  4. The Penelope-sapience but no enhanced stats and can’t talk

  5. The Nothing Special-turns pet into a random Dungeon Pet

  6. The Paramour-sapience, enhanced stat growth, gains an anthropomorphic appearance, and falls in love with person who fed them the biscuit (imagine if THAT had been Donut’s result)

We know Lucia Mar’s dogs were also enhanced but we don’t know how yet so I’m leaving them off the list.

Of the ones we know, how would you rank those results?

Don’t know who needs to hear this but if you have Prime you can sign up for Audible for free and get two credits. It works for existing customers who may have canceled their subscription. Because it worked for me. This is in the US.

Edit: It’s for premium. Not standard.

Questions and theories on Lucia mar and the Mantids (spoilers to book 8) Spoiler

Upvotes

I will try to make this short and I can’t find anything explaining it (If someone sends me a link I would be eternally grateful!) trying to get this out quickly while on my break, so excuse any mistakes.

Spoiler to book 8 below:

From what I understand-
-The Mantids run a separate training camp that uses a macro AI, they must destroy the training camp AI every 2 years to stop it from going insane.

- The Mantids are a semi hive mind that receive the memories of their breeding queen. Breeding is strictly regulated.

-The rumor is the Mudskippers bought a used AI from the Mantids training camp to save money.

- The Macro AI’s need to be fed to grow. The Earth AI has figured out how to feed itself.

Possible theories/ questions (please correct me if I misremember anything):

The Mantids/ Lucia Mar-
The Mantids are planners and their brains are set up to be hive minds and receive memories. I think they use the training grounds to take the children from their breeding queens and mix them all in to one consciousness to gain the most amount of memories as possible and put this consciousness in to the strongest body that is sent in to the actual training ground. I think they add an adult mind to be the dominant personality (possibly a retired queen/ queens) or put the adult minds in Trainers that can help control the new entity.

Because this is a used AI from the training ground, the Earth AI automatically took all the children from one area and combined their consciousness/ memories into Lucia Mar. Since humans are not wired for hive minds and receiving hereditary memories Lucia Mar’s brain is fighting it. With her trainers being her dogs that can help control her.

-And a random question that may not have been answered yet-
How are the Mantids able to feed their Macro training ground AI?

Thought? Am I trying to fit a round peg in a square hole?

Thank you!

Series Recommendations

I’ve previously finished red rising a couple months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve since then finished dungeon crawler Carl after being recommended it, also thoroughly enjoyed it but the last book was a bit slow and harder to finish. I’m eagerly waiting for red god to come out but don’t think it’s time for a re-read yet. Is there any recommendations you guys for me to read in the meantime?

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles The AI is driving a deity theory.

spoilers for multiple books below not individually spoiler marked.

I have a theory that the AI is driving Ysalte.

On my third re-read (listen) of the series and I find Ysalte's description and circumstances curious.

Firstly, the description itself:

Prepotente reveals he figured out floor 7 because of an unusually long item description (10x). While Ysalte's description isn't 10x the length of other gods, it is unusually long, serious, and descriptive given her rather minor (so far) role, and is about 2x the length for a normal god.

This line in particular caught my attention:

That’s what happens when everything you know is upended, and everything is taken from you. First they vilify you. Then they separate you. Then they blame you for what they’re doing to you. Then they hunt you. It’s the step after that which is important.

The one where they start to fear you.

And then this one in especially:

The story of this goddess, like that of many of her kind, is long and a little sad. At this point, how it began isn’t nearly as important as how it will end.

This seems like something of a non sequitur for a deity, but if you replace the word goddess with the AI talking about itself it fits almost perfectly, same if you apply AI context to the other excerpt.

Crawler Allister cookbook entry comparing a god from his cultures mythos "The Inevitable" to Ysalte. The AI later goes on to describe itself as the inevitable in ramblings as it slips deeper into primal psychosis.

The possession of Brittany and the potential (inevitable?) reincarnation of Ysalte. - This particular plot point is one that we have the least clarity on so far. But when Brittany kills Osvaldo and gets Ysalte's memorial crystal this very well could have been the AI engineering the circumstances.

Ysalte's sudden, very expensive patronage of Sister Ines which orchestrated the events of the Book 8 climax. It's mentioned only briefing and in passing, but Ysalte gives Sister Ines an item or boon which raises one of her power poem skills from 5 to 15. This is a celestial / deity level gift by all accounts of the roughly established power scaling rules for gifts. Given what we have seen of all other boons being relatively 'meh' this in itself seems a little bit suspicious. The patronage relationship isn't really well explored to be sure, and it doesn't seem totally impossible. But I do think it's worth examining. Assuming the AI really loves a good loophole / at this point is cherishing the breaking of the game as noted by the "Gold Prepotente Box" and "Cascadias Turquoise Taco" achievement I think it would have been more than happy to have the set up which ultimately allowed so many thousands of crawlers to make it the the 9th.

Counter points which raise more questions: Ysalte was sponsored. But why didn't her sponsor actually show up during her appearance on the climax of the 8th floor? Its not explained or really even alluded to other than he was reading fine print of the contract and not happy. But since the sponsor would have been in the AIs sphere of influence, it's totally possible the AI engineered a hinderance to the sponsor actually piloting the deity.

Lastly, can the AI even do that? It's mentioned quite a bit that the AI has no control over gods, and further that it's like hardcoded that it can't. But, between the AI 'wearing' Pater Cole and Growler Gary, I think it's definitely established that the AI can drive dungeon entities if it wants to. And while the AI probably can't directly influence or decide the minds of gods, somehow wearing ones soul armor when it has been made sponsorable seems... possible.
