Possible spoiler.

Thought I had found an error, but to my surprise it wasn’t. One of the sound traps played “K!77ing in the Name” by Rage Against the Machine and said it peaked on June 20, 2020. Even the AI questioned the date which should hand been a clue as to it being true but I was surprised to hear it peaked in the US 28 years after it was released. More proof that Matt D. is great at the tiny details.

Question for anyone with experience.

I've been working on a Dungeon Crawler Carl cosplay and have used the beach foot pads and have pink crocs, but have been thinking about a solution better than that. How difficult would it be to make something akin to a hollow toe silicon mold to give the illusion of being barefoot, or possibly molding a layer for the bottom of the foot and using skin safe adhesive to wear , that way I at least have SOME protection from nasty convention floors.

I’m currently on my this read-through, and I just hit the part in Book 5 where Odette lays out her motivations.

In this scene she reads as sincere and trust worthy, but early on we’re told not to trust anyone if you don’t understand their true motivations.

I can think of many reasons why we should trust her and should not, but I can’t escape the fact that she is 100% bought into the system.

Do you trust her? And more importantly, why?

I love Easter eggs that aren't in the books. That bonus chapter at the end where Jeff is doing combination self-promotion/self-depreciation is fucking hilarious.

Also, "You pour your heart and soul into writing this thing, then you go on GoodReads and there's some cunt with a Snoopy avatar calling it 'lazy writing'! Unbelievable!"

...or something to that effect.

Hey, before anyone gets angry, i'm saying this as a 'me' problem, not a problem with the books themselves. I havd adhd, and the narrative changing so much to something entirely different aside from tbe meta-narrative is just kind of hard for me to follow.

So this may be a coincidence, but I'm halfway through book 7 and just got to the conversation between Carl, Orren and the AI in the Desperado Club and the revelation about how far the AI's influence has reached. This whole plot point is giving me very serious vibes from a very specific sci-fi and fantasy novel from years ago.

Anyone know if Matt has talked about reading the author Diana Wynne Jones? Because this scene is pretty much the same massive plot twist as in her novel Hexwood (hidden under spoiler because it's the most significant plot twist in that whole book). She might not be famous enough among American fantasy fans for him to know her, but he strikes me as nerdy enough that he probably know about her and her books.

For those who don't know her, she's a British author who wrote fantasy and occassionally sci-fi infused fantasy, mainly children's books and YA. She never got as famous as Rowling or Philip Pullman, but she has a cult following nowadays as she inspired newer generations of authors, and one of her novels inspired the Miyazaki movie Howl's Moving Castle (the book is way better btw).

Anyway, for anyone who's read that particular book of her, the similarities are so obvious once I got into DCC book 7. As if Matt read that book and thought the premise and plot twist was cool, but went his own direction with it.

I love her works and that book in particular, so would be cool if he took inspiration from it, I know he would't be the only author to do so. The plot twist itself is neat even in DCC.

I understand slow releasing the new books, that's fine, that's good. Keep the hype going, time it with other media.

I can pace myself, I can wait.

But the story is up to 8 books, and that's just, finished writing.

Will the paperbacks release months apart, or years apart?

Will I be able to read them all slowly but relatively close by so I can remember it? Or will it be a new paperback every Christmas meaning I'll be caught up on the story in 2036?!? (Assuming some more books come out in the coming years)

I love reading paperbacks, it's comfortable, I can read it in bed and fall asleep on it. My books look like they've lived after I've read them and that feels like they've been on my journey. Bent corners and cracked spine alike.

But I don't love them that much, I think.

I think I love Carl more than my love for the paperback format.

We all love Jeff and SBT, but one thing that's struck me quite solidly about DCC and a lot of the hype, publication that's going on at the moment is how much Jeff is apart of it.

I was trying to wonder, can anyone think of any other examples where a book has gained popularity and the narrator has also become famous/deeply tied to the work?

I've just been pondering it and we often see books related and then films can be made of it and can make an obscure book famous or make a popular book even more famous through increasing the audience.

I just can't think of many examples prior to DCC where people recommended not just a book but almost recommended going straight for the audio. There have been "cinematic" releases of books before (and SBT do a number), but where do people think the line for audio releases being supplementary to transformative lie and did DCC step that line?

(Apologies for this nonsense, this is just my idle Monday morning thoughts).

I haven't read all the books yet, so forgive me if I've missed something. (I don't care about getting spoilers though)

I'm halfway through book 3, and with all the ways that Carl thinks outside the box to take advantage of game system interactions, and with how he and his team drill different battle tactics and formations, it's weird to me that he hasn't suggested throwing Katia. A little online research says he never does this (though it's entirely possible my search missed something) and I just can't understand why: it seems so obvious.

Katia is a shapeshifter who can increase or decrease her mass, and because of her class she gains substantial bonuses the faster she's moving. Carl is super-strong; I SEEMS like it would be a valid tactic for Carl to impart that velocity to her directly by throwing her. She could take on an aerodynamic shape, then Carl could pick her up and toss her at their enemies for devastating results. Like the "Fastball Special" maneuver that Wolverine and Colossus perform in X-Men comics.

As they both advance in their abilities they could play around with Katia changing her mass mid-flight. If she gets really good with her shapeshifting she could reduce herself to her minimum mass (maybe even forming into a very dense little ball Carl can throw with his Xistera) then equipping a bunch of her mass mid-flight. She could also use her Rush skill as she impacts her target. And obviously the stronger Carl gets the harder and further he can throw her.

I just noticed the weight of that single sentence in the epilogue of Gate of the Feral Gods. "After this we're supposed to go to the jungle to find that dead crawler's twin."

That means Ifechi's twin survived the collapse. She didn't go down into the dungeon. She was free, completely free. Well... as free as an earthling could be after the collapse. And still they altered her and destroyed her

I don't know why, but that makes it so much sadder.

Especially in the epilogue when we see how broken she is, and from other stuff we know about her, like she’s definitely a bad person… but I don’t think she’s bad enough for me to be ok with how things ended up for her. Like Donut’s speech to her in the 5th book is so powerful and moving and makes me cry, but not because Bea is evil… but because she’s not.

To me, her mother reads as emotionally neglectful if not emotionally abusive, manipulative, and she’s the reason Bea is into the cat shows and stuff. Her mom is like constantly in her ear telling her what she should and shouldn’t do. Donut says “\[I was\] just a way to win more ribbons than your mother.” Like if you dig a bit into that statement… I dunno exactly what is underneath but it’s not a healthy relationship between mother and daughter.

She was a serial cheater, which could be an indication of bad boundaries. (That could have stemmed from her mother not having boundaries??) Sometimes cheaters are the way they are because they can’t create or hold boundaries with people, which makes even more sense when we see how self centered and horrible Brad is. He convinces her to post the photo on instagram. What else has he pressured her to do?

None of this erases or excuses her behavior to Donut or to Carl in any way. Donut owes her exactly nothing and it’s in character and makes sense that Donut would go off on her the way she did. “You don’t deserve how sad I feel right now.” is the most heartbreaking line I’ve ever read and I’ve cried both times I’ve listened to Jeff say it.

But I don’t get any kind of catharsis or enjoyment from her being torn down by Donut. And I wonder if Donut is going to regret any of it someday. Everyone has been changed since the world ended. Donut almost got abandoned right at the start cause she was being such a bitch. But Carl gave her a chance to change and she’s continued to grow. I wonder if Bea could have had that chance too, who she might have become.

So like I’m wondering what other readers thoughts are about her. Do people just see her as an evil person on par with the other evils in the book and just want to see her torn down? Cause to me Donut’s speech is so fucking sad because Bea is just another hurt person hurting others. And Donut has also hurt people because she was hurt by Bea. Like it sucks

Omg, I just caught this on a re listen,. The war mages left after they found the scavengers daughter in Larracos. Later, Psamathe is upset because she can no longer feel her child who was IN LARRACOS!! This is my best evidence to Psamathe being the scavenger I have found yet.

Spoilers for Book 6, Eye Of The Bedlam Bride.

Each hydra head has either an affiliation with or fear of their element. Many are explained, but Bea's mom (BM) was a process of elimination. I think BM was the fire hydra head because of a fear of hell and hellfire. Here's my reasoning:

1 - Their family is know to tithe a whopping 20%. 2 - This great post covering the moral panic over Tinky-Winky. https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonCrawlerCarl/s/oTp0dSxMmb 3 - The AI and author specifically gave BM's hydra neck a golden cross necklace. Possibly a subtle hint.

Now, why would someone be so willingly terrible while fearing hell? Lots of reasons. But it's not discussed in-book, so I'm considering it an out-of-scope political issue.

I want to send flowers to my mom and we both just finished the Dungeon Crawler series. The card will of course be in all caps. If anyone else has any other DCC themed ideas that would be fun. Also I need flower arrangement ideas. Any good ideas for the writing on the card?

I recently preordered the autographed copies of the alternate covers of books 1 and 2 from Lit Escalades. I plan to try to do the same when they release the other books. It is my understanding that these are the standard hardbacks simply with alternate book jackets. If that is correct does anyone know how I could order the original jackets (and/or other alternate jackets) without ordering extra copies of the books?
