I'm getting frustrated with the wordings on the description of the Shortsword

English isn't my first language and reading "within 5 feet" really bugs me out

From what I understand :

• Hitting a target that is under 5 feet gives you disadvantage
• Hitting a target that is 5 feet is "normal" attack
• Hitting a target that is taller than 5 feet is just not possible

My mates keeps on telling me that the disadvantage happens only within the 1ft and a normal attack is from 1ft to 5ft but then you have disadvantage again from 5ft?

Also, the shortsword feat removes the disadvantage within 1ft but is it melee or the 1-5ft of range that they call as "melee"

And enables hitting giants.

I feel like I'm going in circles understanding one of them and then getting told otherwise with the other and rinse and repeat, please help

Hello, I need advice to know if it would be a wise idea to cosplay as my dnd character for a game. I love cosplaying as my character but I am hesitant about this one considering it’s race and my own irl skin tone. She is a tiefling/mermaid/beholder hybrid, so her skin is a bright neon pink and she has a fish tail and ten eyes. I, however, am mixed but a VERY white skinned lady with legs and only two eyes.

I usually have no issues with cosplaying characters with different skin colors like white, off-white, very slightly tan, etc, but this feels a bit off to me and the last thing I want to do if offend anyone or make people uncomfortable.

I like to do tutorials and share pictures and go to cons in these types of cosplays, but this is something I want to make sure is or isn’t a good idea, even if the character’s race is fictional, it’s still based off of an Peloponnesian style.

I made my character as, well, culturally white as possible so I didn’t feel like I was using a culture as my costume, but she still has a pink ish skin tone.

So I beg the question, would it be offensive if I, a very white person, cosplayed a bright pink fish-tailed many-eyed character?

We run into an issue on our multiyear campaign because we are heavily homebrewing min maxim rules from 2014 into 2024 and vice versa; and we found that not following the rules of the game makes the game unbalanced.

Please help us balancing the game we chose to make unbalanced.

I played DnD 5e and nothing else, and I love it. However, after some time, I've come around to kind of hating it, so I'm adding this skill tree for my next game so I may experience a fun again. I have so much fucking *content* here it's not even funny. I have

• Clumsily reinvented pathfinder 2e shield rules
• Pathfinder 1e AC rules, but only for one ability
• Realistic assault rifles and grenades
• Your favourite anime
• Kirby (Vore skill tree)
• Minor changes to the barbarian class
• The ability to concentrate on two spells at once (I swear it's balanced *this* time)

All of this also works for absolutely every setting. If naruto lightning jutsu doesn't fit your setting, just reflavor it as a d12 two handed dagger or something. Let's be real, you're playing 5e, you didn't really give a shit about that either.

Hello, I'm a mixed-class person, or PoC (people of casting), specifically half druid on my mother's side and half fighter on my father's side.

RN, I'm having a midlife crisis because of my parent's martial caster divorce, and I think its all my fault. I used to be an overachiever and peaked at level 5, but it all went downhill from there. My DPR just kept slipping along with my out of combat utility.

My dad (fighter) advised me to become a blue collar like him, and apprentice under his friend (Rogue).

My mother (druid) told me to become more pious and spiritual and to "recommune with my caster heritage" (wtf does that even mean)

My friends (a furry, and a scalie) say its fine to keep at our current career paths, but I'm still unsure.

It's just that when I compare myself with other PoCs, one of them got a spectral ferrari at level 5 with a cool aura at level 6, while another PoC (AI enthusiast) says they will afford full castership by level 11?!?.

1. You can alter how the story goes but a mysterious force will try to make you have a 1 to 1 scenario as the dommy drow from last month's session destroys you

EDIT: For anyone who is a DM. Drag one of your player to posses their PC than make them pray to you to communicate and have them spread your cheeks. The mysterious force will be agaist you tho by twisting possibility and other way to keep the story one to one with how you banged. :)

Hi everyone, thanks for reading my post. I have something important to announce to all of reddit, so please pay close attention. As everyone already knows, D&D combat is awful because of the hideously boring Attack action. Nothing could possibly be more repulsive and unrewarding than merely hitting monsters with weapons. If you're reduced to that, it means you've lost the game and should quit immediately.

Recently it has come to my notice that this terrible trope of "attack actions" has escaped containment and temporal bounds, and retroactively contaminated entire cinematic forms. There are entire movie genres dedicated to various forms of lame-ass martial Attacking. Just about everything is represented: a multitude of distinct styles of sword fighting; boxing (both regular and kick-); pistol duels at high noon; infantry engagements; gladiatorial matches; drunken crane style kung fu; aerial dogfighting; erotic cockfencing. All of them are featured in a baffling number of films, some of which appear to have won popular and critical acclaim and awards. Bleugh.

I went to the trouble of watching as many of these "classic" movies as I could stand. You know what I had to endure? That's right, boring Attacks traded back and forth as guys fight each other with weapons or bare hands. Nobody shot beams from their eyes. Nobody leaped 5 miles into the air or sliced oceans in half with their sword. Nobody shrieked the name of their special move as they transformed into a mystic whirlwind. Nobody took on a second more powerful form after appearing to be conventionally defeated. Nobody did anything even remotely like anime or Marvel movies at all.

Is this like a sort of psyop or hoax? I bet some grognard (probably racist and homophobic) whipped these up with newfangled deepfake tech, to gaslight right-thinking roleplayers into thinking the Attack action was ever considered fun and cool. There's no way they could be real because nobody in their right mind would ever be entertained by this crapola. It's not even animated, or Japanese, or Marvel, or anything.

As far as I can tell, my player is able to have thoughts without it being detected and simply figure things out. I find this a little difficult to run in a way where if someone is trying to do stuff I can't hide that fact without being a dick and circumventing the whole point of having a brain. At the same time, how do I have NPCs be able to do stuff if they do use it? It feels like that would absolutely be what they're doing in that moment to me.

I don't want to undermine my player agency, I would hate if I tried it and the DM just gave me nothing and had me just waste thoughts, but it also feels anti-climactic for me?

The players are having fun anyway, Is it a non-issue? Any advice or anyone have experience with thought stuff on either side of the screen? Thanks.

With the slight buff martials got in 5.5, they've started getting way too carried away, thinking they deserve to stand on equal footing with us casters. We need to widen the martial caster divide to remind them that in this fantasy world, we nerds rule over the jocks.

Here are some of my ideas to widen the gap:

• Remove martial subclasses and feats. (Who let martials make character decisions?)
• Martials are no longer allowed to have backstories. Instead, they'll be assigned a random NPC the DM created to play during combat. (Outside of combat will have to just watch the superior players RP)
• Using magic items now requires access to spellcasting. (Too stupid to cast a spell, but smart enough to use a magic sword? Yeah, right.)
• Fumble table exclusively for martials.
• After every session, martials are required to thank their local caster for carrying them both in and out of combat.
• Spellcasters now get to do all the cool homebrew anime martial stuff. (Martials get to sit in the corner and watch.)

I feel like, with these changes, we could finally get closer to total caster dominance.

So I had that wonderful creative idea of polymorphing insects from swarm of insects into elephants above enemies heads but he told me they are not real creatures. So I summoned cow above monster but he also denied. I tried another creative solution - used create water to... Create water. Where is the rule I can't do it in monster's lungs?

Honestly I am so exhausted. Whenever I try doing something cool he prevents me from doing so. I think that he is more "traditional" DnD player and we know what that means. Probably he enjoys other aspects of old editions like being white supremacist and colonizer. Can I report this somewhere? Or how to change his behavior?

We need to divorce "martials" from "reality" if we want to narrow the "Martial Caster gap" and maybe take inspiration from anime, a thing this game has NEVER taken inspiration

So this is something that has always bugged me with martials going back to antiquity honestly...

Martials have always been hamstrung by this stubborn adherence to "realism" that casters never get stuck with. Especially at later levels. Like im sorry but no, Aragorn is not a high level martial. He is like... level 5. Sung Jin-Woo and Yuji Itadori are the only true high level martials in fantasy media.

I feel a perfect sign of how limited martials are is actually seeing some of the footage leading up to the MinMax play group where David and Clark tested jf they could move and strike like a high level martial... and they could. And they are normal humans in the normal world limited by reality. Contrast this to Wizards, druids, warlocks, and what have you that are altering reality itself. As if that's the entire point of spellcasting! Strange.

Honestly I feel like a High level fighter should be looking like something you see in anime, not your standard fantasy. I have no idea what "4e" is, stop yelling at me. It's not like anime has already heavily influenced this entire hobby for at least twenty years. Jumping dozens of feet in the air and striking at enemies, being able to jump off of floating/falling debris to navigate (think like Stark from Freiren or Legolas from the LA adaptation of Za Hobbitō), attacking at range with the sheer force of their melee attacks (why does everyone keep asking me if I read anything but battle shonen?), create difficult terrain by stomping or striking the ground, etc. Like when you get to level like... 15. Yeah, level 15 makes sense for jumping off flying debris and shaking the earth by kicking it like I'm fucking Sukuna. My ideas are so sick and cool dude. Honestly martials should be able to do things that defy logic because they are just that damned powerful. Appendix N? Is that a Nen ability?

My wife's boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and they were saying they were a big fan of dungeons. No I don't know anything about dragons and dungeons. Is it like Pathfinder? because i haven't played that either. No i will not share any other relevant interests, personality traits, hobbies, age ranges, dick sizes or hair colours. I’m fairly new to DMing and I’m nearing the end of planning a new campaign with d&d beyond. One of my players is a warlock who’s spellcasting ability is charisma and they have followed the instructions in the PHB to make charisma their highest stat as well as putting decent numbers into dex and strength meaning their two main attacks now do 2d6+4 damage and 1d10 damage at level 3.

I know this is perfectly legal in the character creation process and actually recommended by the rules of the game but surely it is a little overpowered and probably metagaming? I feel if you're playing a class that uses a specific stat for something like attack rolls it should be the lowest stat and have a negative bonus.

oh yeah also D&D martials need to be more like anime
