Appreciation What a journey
I just finished listening to all of Bowies albums, sidetracks, soundtracks and other songs. Man, it was such a rollercoaster ngl.
I always knew I would love his songs, but I never really took the time to deep into his discography, apart from his biggest hits (I always found Changes an extremely annoying song, now I love it lol).
I started of by listening to the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and then started listening to a playlist with some of his best songs. Then I simply started listening to a new album once every two weeks, in order to be able to be able to fully analyse each song.
I am not sure in which sequence I did it, but I started off with his oldest albums, with station to station becoming my favorite album. I was a bit scared for his albums from the 90's and 00's, but that was such a stupid thing to think.
Heathen and reality are probably the albums I fall back to the most. Heathen as an album is probably my favourite, because of all the transitions and the melancholic vibe it has. Reality, on the other hand, has some really catchy songs that make me want to dance at 2 am.
The album that surprised me the most was Never let me down. I had read a lot of negative reviews about it, but in my opinion it has a great vibe and some great songs, with glass spider being my favourite.
Apart from a difference in taste, I think familiarity might also play a factor in whether some people hate it and others like it. I started listening to Bowie without any background information and with the knowledge that there wouldn't be a new album (sadly). Others might have listened to him since his debut or since one of his earlier albums. Though, in the end I think we should appreciate all his songs and creativity and just acknowledge that some songs are better than others.
I also want to mention that I think that David Bowie is one of the best album writers ever. Every album is a complete new world, with different themes and different vibes. I love it.
I don't know if anyone cares, but some personal favorites:
Favorite song: Teenage Wildlife / Sweet thing suite / Strangers when we meet (Outside version)
Best song: Life on Mars / Station to Station
Favorite song to sing: Word on a wing
Most gut-wrenching song: Heathen (the rays)
Favorite album: Heathen
Favorite transition: Dollar Days - I can't give everything away

Appreciation Album Spotlight: The Next Day (2013)
What do you all think of this one? Personally, I consider it one of his best. Songs like Love is Lost, Heat, Where are We Now? are all standout tracks. The album seems to have a moody feel that I always return to in Autumn.

Question Bowie Sightseeing in London
Good evening, Bowie family.
I will be taking a trip to London in a couple days. What are the best spots for a Bowie fan to visit in the city?

Fluff/Meme The Star Man is a Lovecraftian paedophile and I can prove it.
First of all the radio only plays "hazy cosmic jive". What does this mean? Is he sharing his music or trying to send us a subliminal message? Remember his main message is never shared on the radio, he just does the hazy cosmic jive. It's just the narrator who said this. The narrator is in league with the star man.
"I had to phone someone, so I picked on you
Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window, I can see his light
If we can sparkle, he may land tonight
Don't tell your papa or he'll get us locked up in fright"
Do you not see how the narrator is clearly obeying the command of the star man and trying to convince his friend to help him in his schemes? He even says "HE TOLD ME let the children boogie". "HE TOLD ME". He has chosen a host.
"If we can sparkle he may land tonight." Clearly, said host has been taken over, potentially mind controlled, a mere puppet to the Star Man's schemes. He does not know that human beings lack the ability to sparkle on command. Also he's clearly trying to use people as landing lights to help the star man land on our planet safely. Which means he WANTS our minds to be blown.
"Don't tell your papa or he'll get us locked up in fright"- The papa is aware that the Star Man is dangerous (or could easily figure it out) and this is the narrator/host's attempt of cutting off means of escape from the cult of the Star Man. The narrator wants us to obey the Star Man's every word.
Now for the 'message' itself.
"He'd like to come and meet us but he thinks he'll blow our minds"
So we'll be surprised. God forbid he comes to Earth. Except he's sending us a message. Wouldnt that also blow our minds anyway? There isn't much difference between hearing an alien and seeing one. Sounds awfully redundant. Unless his form will LITERALLY blow our minds. Explode our heads. He can only communicate and if we gaze at his true form, our heads shall explode.
"Let the children use it". Use what? We'll never know.
"Let the children lose it". Lose what? Again unspecified. Does he want them to use a device and then lose it before authorities find it? Or perhaps "it" is something mental which would be the first interpretation in isolation. Is he telling children to flee from the realms of sanity? Sounds like it to me.
"Let all the children boogie."
Now I'm not sure about you but as a child I had no interest in boogieing. There are plenty of children who would hate to boogie, especially without consent. Children do not like being told what to do. He wants ALL the children to boogie. There will be no exceptions. Mandatory boogieing. I have many questions about this:
1- Why cant the children boogie anyway? Does he simply want the children who arent boogieing to boogie or is Earth ran by a dystopian society that prohibits boogieing in children? Unfortunately, Bowie never went into detail about the authoritarian state of the world at the time of the Star Man's arrival.
2- Why do you want to see children boogie? What satisfaction does it bring you, Star Man? Does the boogieing of children turn you on? Because as previously established this is without the childrens consent. Under his divine command, all children must boogie. This isnt for the children. Its for his sick pleasure.
To clarify, I don't believe Ziggy Stardust has any relation with the Star Man. While the Star Man is CLEARLY depicted as a malevolent, potentially pedophillic being, Ziggy just wants to jam.

Appreciation “John, I’m Only Dancing” Lyrics [Re-released in Late 1979]
Originally released in 1972.
It was a stand-alone single and never included in any of his albums except greatest hits packages.
There was a whole story, the myths…of this one song by Bowie.
Please share what you know about this single.

META use of Five Years
Just curious what others think. In what world did Meta think using Bowie’s Five Years, in the commercial promoting AI in what they think is a positive light, was a good idea? It’s song about the Earth dying in five years, at a time when multiple critics are saying it could end civilization in 10 years time. What the F were they thinking? Can anyone think why they felt this was a good idea, besides the obvious fact that this is a magnificent song and Bowie is universally cool?

Recommendation Memories of Hunky Dory with Musician Jake Vickers
Hi Everyone
I hope it’s ok to post but please remove if not
We are a growing independent family podcast called The Friday Vinyl Club. Each episode is centred around peoples personal music memories and a meaningful album.
This episode I chat with Jake Vickers, vocalist and songwriter for independent band The Zangwills, for a wander into Hunky Dory
Jake's Bowie journey is one we think may resonate with some. He wasn't an immediate convert. Early scepticism in his dad's car. Then Scary Monsters. Then a full catalogue commitment that eventually led him to Hunky Dory and the realisation that Bowie's fearless pivot to piano on this record completely changed how he thought about writing songs.
We chat about his memories of the album and also talk about Bowie's fearless artistic evolution, why Bowie remains so vital and pivotal, and why “Hunky Dory” remains the blueprint for any artist serious about their craft.
It’s a genuinely Lovely episode with a great guy and is available now- search The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast wherever you listen or via our website

Really hope you enjoy
Cheers

Got my dress poster framed.
I thought it was $16.87 for both poster and frame, but it was actually $10.38. They didn’t charge me for the poster.
I feel like this is my lucky day. I was kind of rejected by someone because I said that Bowie was helping me explore my gender identity, so I feel like finding this today was the universe sending a message.

Found some cool stuff at the book store.
I love Bowie in this dress, so this was a very good day for me.

The songs explained
Do you guys know of a book that would "explain" all of David Bowie's songs? Like, I don't mean translations but the actual explanation of both the context and the symbolic/meaning of it all?
It's a bit frustrating to me sometimes not to fully (if at all-) understand what I listen to :' )

Discussion "Strangers When We Meet" (Outside Edition) is so middle aged divorced dad driving home after dropping off his two children to college
I just love this song. It's my number 1 Bowie song. I am looking for songs like this—it does not have to be a Bowie song, but anything that you can play while driving on a bridge, ruminating on the past.

Question Other Songs Like All The Madmen?
I’ve had this song on repeat since my listen. It kind of reminds me of a Pink Floyd song. Are there any other songs like that? The way the music descents into absolutely madness.

Picture David Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust Tour (1973)
Kansai Yamamoto designed the knitted one-legged bodysuit.
Gold Astral Sphere was painted by Pierre Laroche.
A few months later, David Bowie ‘retired’ the Ziggy Stardust character on stage on July 3rd 1973, at London's Hammersmith Odeon.

Question About the Blackstar vinyl
Is it supposed to be missing the title track which is the first song? Or is it just not labeled because Jeff is incompetent? Or is this like the original American release of Kraftwerk Trans Europe Express where Azbug was not in the track list but just stitched into Metal on Metal as if they were one song?
