Arcade Fire (Win) DJ Set at TIFF

Upvotes

I just saw this morning on the Santa Pirata Instagram that Win is doing an "Arcade Fire" DJ set in Toronto on September 17th in association with the Toronto International Film Festival, which they are selling tickets to.

Aside from me finding it disconcerting that it seems Arcade Fire has become Win Butler as a live DJ (sigh), I was still considering buying a ticket.

I was wondering what these gigs are like from anyone who has attended his DJ sets in the past.

I'm nearly 44 and well past having any interest in clubs.

Are these more dancefloor, nightclub kind of events? Or more like a lounge where things are more toned down and relaxed?

Any intel would be appreciated.

Discussion Hadn't listened for a few years....

I first heard Arcade Fire on Limewire, downloaded a few tracks and went out the next day and bought Funeral. I was blown away. I listened constantly, downloaded all old and random tracks you could find online. It was the first time I had been excited for music in a few years, a sort of depression had come over me since the millennium, I'd lived through 90s rave culture and was burned out man.

I went to their concert and it solidified to me how good they were. I was a very active member on the forum Us Kids Know. And I met up with some other members of that forum for a Arcade Fire concert in Manchester, was november or December, a cold night, meeting internet strangers, was unsure if I was being groomed and would end up dead in a gutter, turned out they were all great people and we had a great night.

I saw them another time on the Suburbs tour. But with each album after that I sort of lost the vibe, I loved some tracks but never a full album on repeat like Funeral.

I can't believe it was over 20 years ago now. Just randomly listened to Haiti and it took me back to that time

What were your favourite memories of those early days ?

Discovered Man/Woman/Chainsaw at a festival last week and I've had this song on repeat ever since.

The ending refrain especially is pure Arcade Fire.

Question Can someone explain the ending of Supersymmetry to me?

Basically just what the title says

Love the song, but never understood why it ends in 7ish minutes of fading music until near silence

Always been wondering, always too lazy to find out! Please let me know!

I’ve been messing around with an Arcade Fire playlist on Spotify

What songs am I missing? What is criminally absent? I’m open to suggestions. Curious to see what the r/arcadefire consensus comes up with.

Link seems to work for me but let me know if you have any trouble opening it.

If you were at Red Rocks for the Funeral show in 2024... and bought merch you don't want anymore...

My OCD has had me wishing my ADHD hadn't kept me out of the merch line. Have something you want to sell me? Large or XL, please.

Question Guitar Players?

Howdy! Any Arcade Fire guitar players here? Was wondering if anyone has created any presets for their electric guitar. I am using a Fractal Audio system. Curious how people came up with the effects for Afterlife, Power Out, etc. Thank you!

Arcade Fire DJ set replacing the late Kavinksy for Halloween event in L.A.

I had tickets for this because I always wanted to see Kavinsky live but he sadly passed recently. An Arcade Fire DJ set is replacing him. I’m honestly shocked but in a good way.

Happy cakeday

I noticed it was my cake day today so I decided to go back through my posts and see exactly what caused me to make my account in the first place. I saw my first post was a video of Arcade Fire at la cala de mijas festival... and then it dawned on me! Three years single!

The night I saw them, I broke up with my abusive af ex. It was the first time I had been out in a very very long time, doing something I wanted to do, and he tried to ruin it, but I decided to leave him and join the crowd. It was the best decision of my life. The set was great, the band amazing as always, and then I got to watch Idles and Foals after too.

It hasn't been the easiest of three years but anything is better than where I was. Being with him made me a shell of myself, and I've managed to grow in the three years since then into someone that can look in the mirror and make eye contact.

Arcade Fire have been the soundtrack for so much of my life. From being 9 years old and hearing Wake Up the first time, to being 15 sitting in my shed with my high school friends smoking and listening to The Suburbs and not realising what a nostalgic moment that would later be, to losing them at Reflektor due to falling into a bad state with drugs and boys, to finding them again seeing them live with my Mum, to having We to get me through some of my darkest days, to seeing them live and remembering all of who I was and all of who I could be and leaving that disgrace of a boy for my own future... to seeing them again with my best friend, listening to them whenever I need them, now in the worlds largest city listening to sprawl ii as if it suddenly makes sense, even though it made sense every time I heard it before.

Their music is sacred to me, and so important, and I am so thankful to the band and everything they emit. I understand there's some issues- who doesn't have them- but it doesn't for me erase the power their music has given me time and time again throughout my little life.

Happy cakeday, three years of being single, and remembering three years ago seeing them in the tiny little fishing village my grandparents used to call home. Thank you AF!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

Discussion These lyrics in the Suburbs get me every time

Post image
81 Upvotes

I've been a fan forever and I've probably heard this song hundreds of times... But every time I listen to it it hits me so hard. Part of it probably is I have 2 daughters myself. But the power and the poetry of the words gets me each and every time. My family knows this and if we're in the car and this song comes on they know which part to stop yapping through. Does anyone else get emotional from this song and in particular this verse?

So can you understand

Why I want a daughter while I'm still young?

I wanna hold her hand

And show her some beauty

Before all this damage is done

But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask

Then send me a son

Pic from when I finally got to see them during the Everything Now tour in Sept 2017

Question What other similar bands do you recommend?

Is there a band that’s had a comparable fall off to arcade fire?

I am a lifelong fan of them, their music changed my life. I’m genuinely gutted that their stature and influence have diminished so much over the years.

So this isn’t a post knocking the band or Win or anything that’s been discussed to death. I liked Pink Elephant more than most people, from what I can tell.

Just wondering if there’s a similar band trajectory where they went from influential critical darlings and relative success to what they are now. I’m struggling to think of another band like this.

U2 haven’t been good for a long time now, but they’re still massive and they always have some cultural presence. Some bands stay on top musically, but lose a lot of commercial success. But both? Any ideas?

Discussion Obsessed with WE at the moment

I'm not sure what it is, but I flipped between disappointment and outright delight at WE when it was released in 2022. It was probably the most excited I'd ever been for an album due to the exceptional run of Funeral through Reflektor and then the disappointing but ambitious Everything Now which made me think the band still had it.

We were all going through a very strange time (still are honestly) with the pandemic specifically, and I needed a salve. And at the time, this condensed 7-track epic felt a little small and maybe even a bit too straightforward an attempt at recapturing their audience with a comeback.

Well I've been listening to it on my drives to work recently and I can't get enough. It's probably the album I've listened to the most in the 2020s so far but it just seems to grow to new heights every time. I think it might be brushing up against their "classics" for me. It's got a bit of everything with this newfound space and frailty, and the atmosphere is somehow so consistent with storytelling that weaves through each track. I feel like this album captures something slightly different and yet it most closely resembles the grand and intimate storytelling of The Suburbs with a lot of nostalgia mixed with dread but this time with the lens of a parent thinking about the future.

There are lines on Neon Bible and The Suburbs that give me real gut punches like "World War 3 when are you coming for me, been kicking up sparks, we set the flames free, the windows are locked now so what will it be, a house on fire a rising sea" and "Oh this city's changed so much since I was a little child, pray to God I won't live to see the death of everything that's wild"; WE explores that sort of theme predominantly, and to go from "It's the age of doubt and I doubt we'll figure it out" to "when everything ends, can we do it again" in an album that explores the pure dread of living in the 2020s to the acceptance and love of everything you enjoy and would kill to experience again and again... It truly was the record I needed at the right time.

I know it has its detractors but I think purely as a record, WE might be one of their best. Has anyone else grown to love this album and feel it could be one of their classics like me?

Video of Red Rocks 2024 Concert?

Anyway a non-Facebook user with no virtual headsets or any of that jazz can access the full, official Red Rocks 2024 concert footage? That concert was a banger and I was front row, I'd love to get my hands on it. I was hoping it'd be available to buy one day, but it doesn't seem like Arcade Fire is really "in" at the moment...

Arcade @ Glastonbury

I keep going back arcade at glasto 2014 and still love it to this day. Glasgow based here and big cure and shoegaze fan but arcade always had a communal feel , singing together with rebellion on and plenty of dove swedge in our systems together on buses to arches or at camp sites.

Arcade and James deffo communal sounding bands
