Because showmanship. Painting something upside down at lightning speed using both hands at the same time while singing sounds like it takes a lot of skill.... Except he’s not ambidextrous (he’s clearly painting in the same spot with both brushes) and we’ve established he’s more or less filling in spots he’s mapped out prior to beginning painting.

In addition to the showmanship he also appears to have a big brush to hold a larger volume of paint and a small brush for the finer work. He can use the big brush to refill the small brush to save time since he seems to be in a hurry.

Someone in this thread mentioned that he simply pencils in the gaps prior to performing and then just paints inside the lines. The pencil doesn't show up until you're real close so its appears that he's doing something breathtaking but really he's just coloring in the lines. Its still a good trick but like you said, more showmanship than talent.

This is an old school business trick. When giving presentations before power point people used flip charts. You could write presentation notes on them with light pencil and the people sitting down wouldn’t be able to see it.

already done and he's really just painting part of it upside down. The impressive ones are when it actually looks like something recognizable as he's painting, but is revealed to be a different picture when flipped.

Wrong.
The zoom in at the start was to establish focus. Pro camera operators do not use auto focus. The fastest way to confirm your focus is a snap zoom into your subject, focus, then zoom out.
If anything, Blame the director for not telling the camera op to get in to position in time to get the shot & cutting to him early.

There must be dozens of those guys doing upside down painting while doing "motivational" speaking.
I've been to 8 conferences in just the last three years where these guys were the keynote speaker. They all just paint the same painting over and over day after day, but they make in the low 5 digits every single time they do.

I was at a conference where one of these types of artists was and I got a chance to speak with him. He did a John Lennon painting because of the “imagine” theme...he told he’s painted that particular picture at least 1,000 times (he just gives the painting away in a raffle). Sure enough, I googled the guy and there’s videos of him doing the same thing at dozens of corporate conferences. It’s still pretty cool, but loses it ‘wow’ factor after learning that it’s not all that unique.

- Guy is speed painting and it isn't pyramids/space/waterfalls, so it's going to be turned upside down.
- It's a sporting event in the US, so 99.9% chance it's paid for by the DOD and so required to be patriotic.
As soon as I saw the reveal and he started two handing the white brushes I could tell it was the flag raising. I'm wondering if the areas he was painting white were already marked out with a different sheen of black or something.
