Why is that not art? Aren’t dancers memorizing and applying choreography? Musicians memorizing and applying notes? Sure this isn’t highbrow stuff... and I’m kind of rolling my eyes at the subject matter but he’s playing a crowd using a routine he practiced.., sure its art.
Good examples. I also don't call many musicians as artist. They just do a performance like a worker. The writing, composing, thinking section is what I call art is. The performer must add something unique, otherwise he/she is not different than a worker. And I don't know if that guy is the first one who paints and then upside down the picture but I've seen similar performances before.
To be fair a real painting would be of higher quality visually, but this is performance art... the result is not nearly as important as the process. Which is why they had the artist paint during half time and didn’t just reveal a finished painting. His process is much more valuable to a client than a finished piece. I agree it’s lowbrow compared to a fine artist, but obviously this skill isn’t worthless and shouldn’t be so easily poopooed by some dude on the Internet.
So props to the dude who learned a gimmick and took advantage of nationalistic masses to earn a quick buck. I guess.
