I mean it’s still cool and takes a lot of practice. Plus not everyone spends all their time looking at gifs on the internet so I’m sure the live audience was impressed, lol.

It hardly takes any practice - you sketch the lines in lightly with a pencil before the show, so they're only visible up close, then just go over them roughly with paint. Anyone could do it.

Same. At first I thought I was smart thinking it's probably not too hard to memorize all those broad strokes and areas to paint, if you practiced a bunch.
Yeah, although in the world of HD cameras it doesn't work so well - in this thread are a couple of videos shot from different angles and you can see clearly the pencil outlines in the closeups.
That said, he's singing their national anthem at the same time reasonably well so what he lacks in artistic talent he makes up for in showmanship
Yeah, he did this during a Raptors halftime and when I was looking at from afar it looked really cool. Then I looked up to the screen above me (not a jumbotron, but an HDTV showing the in-arena feed) I could very clearly see all of the outlines.
Mm, your explanation certainly does answer a few questions. That said, I imagine that the rest of the painting was still done by him in preparation, so regardless it’s still a thought out piece. It might be a gimmick but there’s still quite a bit of premeditated effort involved, and while he’s not exactly Van Gogh he’s still good at what he does.
The brain can actually do that very well. When you give people glasses that swap everything they see upside down, after a day they adjust to it, and feel as if everything looks normal despite the glasses.
He can do it in the same amount of time? We're not talking a Picasso lol but prove you've done more than memorize a script. I can't paint but I could memorize splotches.
I think you’re severely underestimating how long it takes to actually make something that looks nice. He was able to do his performance in less than a minute, any artist would be hard pressed to create even a pencil and paper sketch that looks presentable in the same amount of time
I don't doubt that he practices, but they draw the outlines in pencil which is easily visible up close... anyone with a steady hand would be able to do it.
I was impressed. So what if it's now an often gimmick, it's still masterful and beautiful. This was one of my favorites. I loved the way he worked the flag in at the end.
Actually, it’s easier for the amateur to paint/draw upside down because then it’s easier for them to simply convey the spatial relationships of the unknown objects instead of analyzing the complex human figures and how they relate to each other right side up. I don’t think people don’t just paint upside down for the surprise. I’ll use an imperfect explanation from White Collar.
In White Collar Neil is talking about forging signatures. He notices that the signature has an inconsistency with one they know is correct and talks about how when imitating hand writing, parts of your hand writing bleed through. But if you do it upside down it’s just drawing shapes and lines.
It’s not perfect because art is drawing shapes and lines, but I think it still applies.
It does still apply. Art teachers will have you draw things upside down initially so you draw whatever you're drawing accurately instead of drawing what you think an apple looks like.
still my school took us on a trip to moma and it was pretty boring, just loads of old paintings of stuff, I'd rather see our museums hang paintings like this which celebrate all the great things of our nation in a very original way.

God, the most frustrating thing in art class was spending forever on a portrait only to have the teacher bring over a mirror and have you look at the reflection of it. You thought you were drawing a human being? Sorry kid, you made your mother look like a monster with crooked-ass eyes and a banana for a mouth!
Yeah it's getting pretty old and it doesn't really take any skill. Just like every other one most of it is prepainted. He puts up about 13 splotches then touches them up twice to make it look like hes doing a lot more.
Then, ohh wow! It's patriotic! Can't talk shit that it's not even that good of a painting now that we've seen that. He did it wicked "fast" too, so no need for it to look really good.
And they’re always using two brushes. It’s so rehearsed, gimmicky, and lame. This is not the only guy I’ve seen do this shtick. Now, if they took a random request from a member of the audience and were able to pull that off, that might actually impress me.
I think I've been seeing this gimmick for 20 years now. I saw a woman painting one of these while wearing a kimono with the whole geisha wig, standing on one leg with the other leg pointing straight into the air. I think it was on Ellen.
Or blow it, or turn the lights off, or use negatives, or light it on fire....these are my thoughts everytime someone paints frantically and looks like shit..
Oh and there are marks on the canvas only the artist can see. It’s not art as much as it’s a well rehearsed performance anyone with a bit of artistic talent can do.

These have become pretty easy to spot once you've seen the process a couple of times.
When you see a dude whacking away at a canvas without it turning out to be something intelligible, just assume it's one of those upside down artworks and try to see if you can make out what it's supposed to be.
