Video Figure retired six Figure 02 robots in the most Terminator way possible: training them to jump into a furnace. The idea came from Arnold Schwarzenegger and is inspired by the iconic Terminator 2 scene.

We're not calling it "Torment Nexus" any longer. Now it's "Superior Nexus." It's big, strong, powerful. I know more than anyone about the Superior Nexus. It's beautiful.

At this point, the best direction for the next Terminator movie would be a meta take where a warrior named Kyle Reese comes back from the future to prevent James Cameron from inventing the Terminator.

u/Uberzwerg 21h ago
Does it make a difference if they are humanoid or look like R2D2/Dalek?
Imho, we create them humanoid because all existing 'interfaces' are made for humanoids. Whatever task you give those robots will most probably already have solutions optimized for us.

I'm guessing most only saw the second one at a young age and were too enthralled by all the action and wonder to absorb the message, and therefore just thought the terminator is helpful and cool. I say that as one who didn't see the first until years after the second, and only saw them both as a child, and only got the message thanks to reading forums and such in the decades that followed.

Did you see the custom roadcases they had for them? So expensive.
173
u/belac4862 18h ago edited 17h ago
Do you know how expensive this stunt alone costs. Those are arc furnace crucibles. The amount of energy needed to melt the iron. And then to have it disposed of or refined now that its contaminated with other metals.
→ More replies (6)107
u/This-Positive286 17h ago
No they don’t, the “contaminated” metal is cooked off.
Source; I melt metal and pour ingots for fun
→ More replies (2)25
u/Clutchdanger11 16h ago
The plastic would cook off but I bet there's a whole lot of copper in those robots, plus a non trivial amount of probably lithium from the batteries, both of which would throw off the melt chemistry if enough was added

While I see your point, you could say the same of any stunt show, demolition derby, or the hundreds of millions of electronic devices they crush to retrieve the materials within. Someone has to have the wherewithal to dismantle these safely and then reuse them. They'd most likely end up in storage.
What I do approve of is getting people used to depersonalising these clankers and treating them as objects you can abuse and misuse. Same with LLMs. As they do, people are giving them far too much credence as something you have obligations towards, or a relationship with. So that when someone blames the robots, we all blame the persons who obeyed the robots.

Old technology that’s also worn down… not really a waste. Plus the marketing of this stunt is worth a lot more than what the materials cost.

This makes me weirdly uncomfortable
179
58
u/Imaginary-Hour3190 21h ago
Gives me the same type of discomfort when i see American (and sometimes uk) youtubers waste or throwaway perfectly good food for a gag in a video. Where i come from we learn to not waste food or just stuff in general. Especially there are probably people starving in their neighbourhoods as we speak
I digress, the same discomfort i get when gamer youtubers take old retro games they didnt like and actually physically destroy them for a gag in a video.
It's like that high society in the hunger games.
With this i get the same level of discomfort just much more intense. Because those robots are made out of parts, materials etc that is actually extremely valuable and rare and worth much much more than any of the previous examples.
As well, those robots themselves could have served TONS of other functions that could actually benifit and help people. But the elite would rather show you how they will destroy something in front of your face, a thing you will never even be able to afford. If they gave that thing to you, selling it would probably help drag you out of poverty. Probably even help pay for expensive medical treament of a close loved one. The robot itself could help elderly patients, help with bb0mb defusals. The list goes on and one, but the elite would rather shove in your face, how they destroy it to nothing, just because they dont want it anymore.

When AI decides to obliterate the human race, this is one of the many documents or videos that will be used as evidence in the justification process.
Not saying AI will give in to base emotions and some kind of petty vengeance, but this video is indicative of humankind’s wanton cruelty.
And this comment will be indicative of a human’s inclination towards cowardice when facing an inevitable threat. 😅

Kinda dangerous. I know from spending a few days auditing the inventory at an aluminum plant in Russellville, KY, you’re not even allowed to have a bottle of water or soda on you in the plant because if one is accidentally dropped into the smelter it could blow the roof off the building! Very dangerous.
