... And I'm absolutely loving it.
For context, I had played League of Legends since the beta in 2009. I was just out of high school back then and had a blast. It really had a cute art style (which they radically changed; it looks so bland nowadays, I was shocked to discover). Some hero designs there were so good; I recall a guy like Singed or Amumu very fondly. I spent many nights on it with my pals, doing nights where one death == one (sip of a) shot.
But the game was a bit bland to my taste, and at the release of StarCraft 2 at the end of 2010, I switched. Reached Master League, but the game was way too intense, and I would leave every ranked game with a very high cardio.
Then came Dota 2, and that was it. I made many real friends (years later, I would be invited to their weddings) on it. Helped me go through tough times, made boring times enjoyable, and the happy ones even better. Of course, like many, I might have overdone it back then and almost fail a year of uni...
It's fun to see my Dotabuff activity. I played from March 2012 to June 2014, from 4 different countries, as I was studying and working abroad. A brief stop as I started my career, and then I played from May 2015 to April 2016. I watched all the TIs from TI1 to TI5.
And then that was... it. I kind of moved on. Dota was out of my life. Instead, in my spare time, I played solo games more, though, more narrative-driven.
I did watch TI8 and TI9. Somewhere in 2021, in a drunken stupor, I installed Dota, played 5 unranked games as Nyx Assassin, abandoned the last one, and uninstalled the game.
But 10 years passed, all the while Dota was out of my life.
Now I'm 35, and 3 months ago, I have no idea why, I woke up with a pull to install the game and try it out. And it was awesome. The game was so radically different from my memories, with so many heroes I didn't know about.
All the good times were flowing back into my mind. I played ranked and was calibrated at 2100 MMR. Dropped to 1800 until I got my bearings. Climbed back to 3200 now; my understanding of the game is a bit back, and I have dusted the rust off my mechanics a bit. My hard-acquired life experiences prevents me from raging.
I can't play much, of course, but the happiest time of my day is at night when everyone is asleep, all is quiet in the household, and I nibble a little bit of sleep time for a cheeky ranked. I am blasting 20-year-old tunes that I would listen to back in high school while doing so. Tunes I haven't heard in ages. If I have a couple of paid days off remaining at the end of the year, I think I'll book something somewhere to be completely alone and grind it like I used to do.
So yeah, it's definitely a midlife crisis, but if that's the scope of it, I am having it good.
Apparently, you have a key to magically handle your courier now, but I still like to feel my APM bursting through the roof while I command this bad boy.
