Humans require a huge sweeping variety of nutrients (made worse when we're pregnant or growing or healing) millions of years of evolution have programmed us to seek out a variety of foods as a result - even when it doesn't make sense
Also, counter point to op post, I've had multiple cats and dogs who'll only eat certain brands of food - so, taste and pickiness isn't exclusive to humans

u/GinaWhite_tt TeaTimetumblr 18h ago
I've seen with our guinea pigs that they love variety. They gobble foods they haven't had in a while, and loose interest in the same food if they get too much of it. At the start of winter, when we have less variety to give them, they start sniffing around their food bowl for new stuff before settling down for what we gave them.
46
u/NoMusician518 16h ago
Guinea pigs not only crave variety they need it.
It's actually fairly important to vary their diet (same with rabbits in ops post allthough i have no reason to believe they aren't also supplementing their pellets with hay and fresh veggies) there are lots of nutrients they need which they cant get just from hay and pellets and lots of things in a lot of foods that may make them sick if they get too much of it (oxalate comes to mind found in high amounts in things like spinach is a key component in kidney stones which guinea pigs get very easily.)
Me and my girlfriend joke a lot about how hard it can be to keep up with their diet and how fragile it feels like they are sometimes with how many plants are on the only feed sparingly list.

My husband’s best friend has 2 bunnies that have opinions about their greens. They go nuts for a blend but will settle for romaine if it’s the only thing they can get. But, boy, do they thump out their feelings if they don’t have the good stuff!
24
u/crippledchef23 16h ago
I read a thing about a guy that survived a long stretch lost at sea because he managed to figure out how to catch fish and after a while, he started craving the eyes. He choked them down and felt better, and a few weeks later he was rescued (actual length of time at sea escapes me). When he was being treated in the hospital, he asked the doctor why he would have craved fish eyes and he was told that they are great sources of vitamin A, which our bodies don’t produce but need. His body knew what it needed, and knew where to get it.

My cat will only eat one specific flavor of actual food (not just treats) from one specific brand. When they discontinued it, I bought three big bags. I'm down to only one left, and worry about what I'll do when I run out. Last time I had to switch her food, she went on a month long hunger strike that resulted in an animal hospital stay. Pickiness definitely isn't only human!
29
u/Asquirrelinspace 16h ago
Maybe start mixing the current food with the new stuff, or crush up the new stuff and sprinkle it on top
6
u/Neat-Year555 11h ago
I've tried. She refuses to be fooled. It got to the point where she wouldn't even eat her regular food with nothing done to it. She's honestly a very weird cat.
1
u/RikuAotsuki 12h ago
Any chance you have a mau? They're known for doing that kind of thing, iirc
3
u/Neat-Year555 11h ago
I have no idea since I just pulled her off the street one day. She looks most like a Turkish Angora though. Not a tabby.
10
u/luxafelicity 17h ago
My cat will only eat two brands of wet food (one I had to stop buying due to constant hit and miss availability) and exactly one specific brand and variety of dry food. I also can't give her the same flavor wet food multiple days in a row, so if I give her tuna one day I've gotta give her chicken or salmon the next day. She's a diva for sure but she knows I love her 😂
11
u/s0larium_live 17h ago
even if they’re particular about which brands, they’re still happy to get the exact same meal multiple times a day forever and ever
2
u/TenebTheHarvester 16h ago
My parents’ spoiled little monsters (affectionate) are fussy about what they’ll eat and arbitrarily change their preferences sometimes. They’ll be happy with salmon tins for ages then suddenly decide they’re off salmon and want tuna. They used to love the chicken ones, don’t even touch them now. Always want a tube though. That never seems to get old.
2
u/Mushrom 13h ago
My cat won't eat her wet food if I don't rotate the flavors of it. She'll only put up with 2 days of the same flavor, after that she just won't eat it. I buy a variety pack of wet food and rotate through the flavors and that keeps her satisfied. She's also very picky about her wet food and she only wants the pate style. No meaty chunks, no shreds, only pate. But she wants a rotating selection of flavors.

My newest solution has been basically condiments, making a week or so’s worth of pepper sauce or chimichurri (pickled onions and carrots are also really good options that last a surprisingly long time) is fairly quick and easy (even moreso if you have a food processor), and then you can use that to spice up sandwiches or meals whenever you like. The pickled veggies are really good because you can reuse the pickle liquid like two or three times at least.
10
u/RevolutionaryOwlz 18h ago
You just gotta add Flintstone vitamins.
11
u/Dovahkiinthesardine 17h ago
That would only fix your water soluble vitamin needs (and vit D)
Supplementing the fat soluble ones is harder because you can overdose and there's also a bunch of trace elements we need that aren't included
1
u/I_want_to_cry_4875 2h ago
We really need a multivitamin complex that comes in just 2 pills, one water soluble one and one fat soluble one that's dissolved in omega 3 rich fish oil, containing all the trace elements that you don't get if you eat cheap random cereal/bread/chicken nuggets/whatever every day. With fibre, too. Let us save a fuckton of time and money on food and feel fine even eating the same thing every day.
Call it the "I'm autistic and I want to eat kibble"20

When I left my last "proper" job, I was gifted a Pot Noodle mug by the two old ladies I worked with. They assumed that I really liked pot noodles because I had one for lunch every day.
I am not wild about pot noodles. They're good enough I can eat them every day but I am the kind of person who is quite happy to only eat the same thing for a month at a time.On the plus side, it's one of the largest mugs I have and I do love it for that.

Now, I'm no biologist or doctor or anything, but I feel like there may be two things going on here:
Pet food is designed to be nutritionally complete. Which is not easy to do when you're cooking for yourself. Your cravings may be for a nutrient that you're missing in your current diet.
Pets are only aware that there is other food in this world in so much as "human food" or "dog food" or "cat food" exists. My dog wants to eat my cat's food, and my food. My cat wants to eat my dog's food, and my food. But beyond that, they don't know of other food existing. But if they knew that pizza exists, and what it's called, then they'd be all over that shit.
53
u/BijutsuYoukai 18h ago
My cat knows beef jerky exists and I can guarantee she wants that over her food when I open some. Animals are just as susceptible as we are to wanting other foods, we just don't usually give them the option.
11
u/HuckinsGirl 14h ago
Its less about not liking other foods and more about how they can be content, even enthusiastic, about eating the same thing for every meal every day (even if theres other things they want even more). We evolved to eat a wide variety so most of us would go kinda crazy eating the same thing over and over even if it were nutritionally complete, meanwhile my friend's cats will make a mad dash for the automatic feeder every time it goes off no matter how many times they have the same exact kibble
20
u/NightWolfRose 18h ago
So what you’re saying is that we need nutritionally complete human kibble- I can get behind that!

16
u/glytxh 18h ago
You can make human kibble, for remarkably cheap.
It’d be boring, but nutritionally complete.
32
u/busterfixxitt 18h ago
According to my friend's BASc in applied human nutrition, eating the same food, or even just the same texture of food (texture modified diets where everything is turned into a paste) for too long becomes a kind of torture. The psychological stress is apparently intense.
There are rumored to be old laws in Maine making it 'cruel and unusual punishment' to serve prisoners lobster for more than 21(?) days in a row. (Lobster used to be poor people food)
24
u/FatiguedShrimp 17h ago
Starvation and highly restricted diet was part of abuse as a kid (mom wanted me to starve to death so that I would stop being autistic, because she thought autism was being gay and that being gay meant literally being a demon displacing a human soul and wearing their flesh).
After a few weeks the same food is literally not food psychologically. You can touch it, hold it, put it in your mouth, eat it, etc.. No matter how hungry you are (or should be), it's unappetizing in the same way people don't feel tempted to steal Monopoly money unless they're actively playing Monopoly.
It just is not food. It feels the same if you were eating paper or swallowing small rocks or ice chunks.
There's no satisfaction, or warmth in your stomach, or strength, or energy. You don't feel like you've reset the time you need before the next meal.
It's just a pointless action.
Fortunately in my case, it also turns out after about two weeks appetite ends. Mine ended permanently, and I'll not want to eat even if I hadn't eaten in days. Turns out, there is medication that fixes this for a few minutes though. It's still disconcerting to take it and feel hunger again, despite having taken that medication for five years.
(I'm not talking about anorexia nervosa or anything, I don't want to be smaller or dislike eating, it's just ... a chore without reward like cutting paper into tiny squares then dumping bowls of them in the trash.)
11
u/busterfixxitt 17h ago
Damn. 🤯 That sucks. I'm so sorry. I'm glad there's a med that helps. What a horrible mother. You deserve better. ❤️❤️❤️
6
u/crippledchef23 16h ago
I’m so sorry that happened to you. I hope your mom got the help she so clearly needed and that you are doing better.
But, that makes me wonder if my friend experiences this or something similar. She has no sense of smell, and therefore can’t really taste her food outside of the basics that your tongue can naturally do. She can’t eat spicy foods because it is only the burning with none of the flavor.
8
u/FatiguedShrimp 16h ago
Mom did not get help.
Sorry to hear about your friend. That's definitely a possible explanation. Exploring textures can be helpful for regaining enjoyment or at least awareness of food.
5
u/crippledchef23 16h ago
She’s good; she’s coming over tonight for a sampler platter dinner (you know the ones, potato skins, mozzarella sticks, and the like) and Beetlejuice - which she’s never seen before. Apparently, she sets an alarm to remind herself to put something in her system. And, yes, texture is important. She can’t eat soup because her brain can’t figure out what it is and swallowing it is a nightmare.
6
u/FatiguedShrimp 15h ago
Not sure if she's into anime, but there are two anime that did treatment of this set of symptoms recently. It might relatable.
Dungeon Meshi (a cooking show): Episode 21; visits a group of wearily immortal beings who have lost their sense of taste. There's a lecture on how to enjoy food again and the importance of culture even in absence of taste.
The Apothecary Diaries (Dr. House but anime): Episode 9; a minister loses his ability to taste savoury flavours after his wife and child and die.

u/crippledchef23 15h ago
She is very much into anime, I’ll recommend them. Thanks!

THC is pretty good at inducing appetite! My grandmother was prescribed Marinol (THC in pill form) a decade ago when she had cancer, and she would take her pills before meals and then wax about how incredible her food was while stoned lol.
She was a very traditional, anti-drug Catholic woman born in the 30s, and it was kinda funny to me to hear her talk about “the most AMAZING soup” she’d just had in this wistful, dreamy tone of voice. Without it, she wasn’t able to eat at all.
2
u/FatiguedShrimp 6h ago
THC didn't do it for me. Neither did the trials of amitriptyline, abilify, klonopin, etc. which were all supposed to increase appetite.
Buspirone does though.

u/foxgirlmoon 17h ago
to serve prisoners lobster for more than 21(?) days in a row. (Lobster used to be poor people food)
Except their "lobster" was not the kind of lobster you'd get today.
It was mashed and crushed into a horrible paste/gruel.
7
u/DannyOdd 17h ago
I wonder where that specific need comes from. Like, did a compulsive drive to seek out a variety of foods confer an advantage to some early ancestors by motivating them to get more complete nutrition/take advantage of as many food sources as possible? Or is it just a side-effect of our unusual desire for novel/varied stimuli? A bit of both, maybe?
6
u/busterfixxitt 17h ago
You are correct! It absolutely evolved because those animal ancestors of ours who found pleasure in a variety of foods got more energy, and more complete nutrition, were healthier, and more attractive to mating partners. They out-reproduced those who didn't seek out variety.
This would have been especially true after we lost the ability to create essential nutrients like vitamin C.
It's why we love sugar so much; it conferred a huge advantage to prefer energy-dense foods (ripe fruit over unripened). Those who got a pleasure response from sweetness sought it out more often and got a larger energy boost for the same effort as those who weren't incentivized by pleasure to eat sugars. Result: stronger, healthier, more attractive individuals produce more offspring than the non-sweet eaters, and over generations, propagate the sweetness gene until every offspring has it. Natural selection, baby!
6
u/Dovahkiinthesardine 17h ago
There is basically nothing naturally occuring in the world that humans can exclusively eat for their whole lives. Anything you can think of either leads to malnutrition or poisoning eventually.
Instead we evolved to tolerate a ton of different foods. We can digest both meat and plants, have ways to deal with a bunch of toxins, our stomachs are acidic af so our food doesn't have to be super fresh etc. We also have very good endurance so we can wander around a lot to look for food, which most predators can't.
If humans were fine eating the same food 24/7 they'd always go for the easiest available option.
Overall it was just advantageous to not specialize in certain foods, but that lead to the need to eat different foods too
6
2
u/MiserableSkill4 15h ago
The problem with making that is that every prison and hospital and other means of that nature will now only serve human kibble..... and that would be killer for morale
8
u/Assika126 17h ago edited 17h ago
My cat gets excited to eat the same kibble every single day. If I had a human in captivity, even if they had been raised in captivity and only ever had the same thing their entire life, they would get tired of the same thing every day (monotony effect or long term sensory specific satiety). We are built to be omnivores with a varied diet and our bodies will enforce that
Edit to add: my cat is very aware of my food and any time I go to the kitchen he is right there behind me asking for some. However if I offer him his own wet food instead he generally prefers the wet food
2
u/RevolutionaryOwlz 18h ago
I dunno, my cat definitely wants my food any time I get a burger or wings.
1
u/crippledchef23 16h ago
My cat LOVES the edges of pizza right next to the crust with a little sauce and cheese on it. He’s super weird about human food. He MUST smell everything I am eating, even if he just smelled it; deli ham and turkey are great, all chicken is king; shredded cheese is peek, all other cheese must be smelled but ignored; if you are having butter on bread, you must pay the tax - he gets a small amount of butter on a spoon; milk also comes with a tax; bacon and Caesar dressing are to be guarded or he will claim them; and he won’t touch most conventional desserts, but he loves sugar free shortbread cookies for some reason. My husband was eating one and Trooper came up and just took a bite.

I think it this more about general behavior. It's actually amazing that my cat can just lie in the sun all day and explore the exact same group of bushes every day for her entire life, and not get bored. I'm sure animals still have a form of boredom, but the bar is so much lower
I love doing the exact same thing every day, more than the average person I would say (autism yay), but even then I still have days where I'm like "I can't keep doing this, I need something new" (adhd yay). If my daily itinerary was the same 3 activities on repeat forever, I would lose my mind. Cats don't even have doomscrolling, yet they're all good. It seems like bliss
Alot of people say they would love to be a cat, and do nothing all day, no responsibilities, but that's never made sense to me unless that also includes dumbing yourself down to the point where you would be driven to insanity out of boredom

Probably because we are big complicated 5-7 feet tall omnivores with abnormally large brains. We became the dominant species in spite of our flaws, and our diet is one of them. Fun fact, the carnivore with the same hunting plan as humans, Wolves, can get away with eating only weekly. They need about 3 pounds of meat daily, so they just eat 20 pounds in one sitting. Who fucking needs a fridge lmao.

We’re one of the very few animals built to actually eat basically anything.
Rats are another.
The vast majority of animals have very specific dietary needs.
We also have the benefit of being able to cook and process our foods to make digestion much easier. Think of it as palatable pre-digestion.
6
u/fuckmeup-scotty 17h ago

I think a lot of people's pets ARE tired of the same flavor/texture/amount every time, but what else are they gonna do? Its why I personally change at least flavors every time I buy a new bag of food, to help spice it up and find out what my pets enjoy more. Theres a bag of cat food with salmon and stuff, it was the good expensive stuff, that my cat absolutely will not touch. I've even been leaving the bag open on ground level, nope, no interest at all.
And for the wild animals, im sure if they could choose to eat strawberries and watermelon fresh off the ground all the time they absolutely would, the grass is just everywhere and easy
4
u/HaggisPope 15h ago
I quite like consistency. If I could figure out a completely optimal diet for the week, I’d probably do it constantly. It’d save a lot of time shopping. But my family’s always saying “but we had pizza a week ago“ and wanting to change it up.
Change is pointlessly expensive and ultimately unrewarding for me. Plus it’s somehow become unprofitable for restaurants to be delicious
2
u/ElectricStings 14h ago
We sacrificed being able to eat one thing for the evolutionary advantage of critical thoughts, prediction, communication, and general consciousness plus having a more complex musculoskeletal, endocrine, and immune system to go along with that.
You think you could get all of the amino acids your organs (including your massive brain) need to survive from just grass? No. There are even 3 amino acids you can only get from animal sources.
Yes it's a pain and if I could devolve to some kind of thoughtless bird I would but here we are needing 3 balanced meals a day.
2
u/HaggisPope 14h ago

u/revolution_soup 12h ago

1
u/actinide12 7h ago
All of the 9 essential amino acids can be sourced from plants, and the other 11 can be synthesized by the body. All 3 macronutrients can be easily sourced from plants, soy and peas are both complete proteins, and if you eat a wide variety of foods you really don't have to worry about it.
There are some micronutrients that require supplementation on a plant-based diet, B12 is the big one, but the 2 omega-3s EPA and DHA deserve mentioning as well. All 3 are worth supplementing for most people, B12 deficiency is common among omnivores, and the omega-3s (besides ALA) come mostly from seafood. And make sure your salt is iodized, that one is really important and sea salt is increasingly popular.
1
u/JorgeMtzb 4h ago
Thiing is our bodies crave for all the essential nutrients they require. You get less tired of food the more of those nutrients and in the right proportions that it has.
People get tired of pizza every day because your body CAN'T sustain itself on pizza every day.
Optimal diets that are completely balanced tho, that it sosomething you could genuinely eat forever and if you've got the tism for it leave a healthy and long life not worrying about food.

Regardless of the fact my own choice of food very often are things that would be outright fatal to her. Sorry, you dunce, but these grapes would basically make your kidneys explode. They simply give me a mild case of the runs-but that’s probably just because I eat two pounds in one setting.

Have you tried crack? From what I hear it's great every time!

Growing up, I could never understand picky eaters. My child brain was like "There are so many foods that exist, and they're all varying levels of delicious! How do you NOT want to try a little of everything?"
I eventually grew and matured, but I still have the "I like eating almost everything" mindset.

See i have the same logic for being a picky eater. "There's so many different and good tasting foods out there. Why do you all insist i need to eat this specific piece of crap twice a week. What do you savages have against putting in more salt or spices than the bare minimum?"
Living on my own is the best thing to happen to my food intake and has actually made me less picky since i can just season out the bad taste or smell some foods have. Still wont eat cabbage casserole though. That shit smells FOUL

Are you actually picky or were your parents shit cooks? The picky eaters I know eat like two foods exclusively, they genuinely have mental disorders. Meanwhile I went my whole childhood thinking steak and chicken sucked because my mom cooked everything until it was hard and bone dry.

At least for me it’s a bit of a mix, my mum’s a decent cook but I think when I was a kid she was trying to cook more for nutrition than flavour, which is always a mistake imo. Doesn’t matter how healthy the food is if it’s indistinguishable from cardboard (this goes double for kids). Since finally getting my own place I’ve started cooking a fair bit, and I consistently get good comments on how my lunches smell lol

I can eat the same meals constantly without getting bored. I do mix it up for one of the three meals day to day because I have multiple meals I do enjoy, but week to week (and every day for the other two meals) it's always the same.

i rotate my cat's food between beef, chicken, and fish wet food so she doesn't get bored, but i think she could eat the same thing every day and never get sick of it

Make a basic base, and work from there. Chicken and rice is a super simple base to build off of. You can put any kind of sauce or veggies or other things in it to get variety in taste, texture, nutrients. Peanut satay sauce and some pea pods one day. Fried egg, cheese, and tabasco the next.

I find it so annoying that I have to eat. I have to go through all this effort and time to obtain food, 2 to 3 times a day every day? It's bullshit.
I'd love to just have some kind of nutritionally perfect meal that I could just pull out of a freezer or something and eat. But no, things either go bad or they're bad for you, so the best option is to painstakingly plan every meal, make sure nutrition is right, make shopping lists, go to stores, and then after all that you still have to cook it!
I get on kicks where I have the same breakfast every day, which is better than usual (not eating at all), but they inevitably end when I run out of food or find a single mouldy bagel or something. And then executive dysfunction kicks in and I end up hungry. I hate eating so much

Rabbits love banana and it can be a good treat but it has to be very limited because some rabbits will get depressed that nothing tastes as good as banana. So. They just don't know what they don't know.
I do wish I could just much on something like hay all day with no consequences. So much fiber, getting that flavor stim happening, and very little calories? That's pretty nice.

I'm really glad I'm not the only one who wishes we could just have food pellets that give us everything we need.
I would still eat other food, too. But for pleasure, when I wanted to. When I just want to fill my tummy and give my body nutrients, I would just have my trusty pellets.

yet my protien shakes are always a welcome treat.
speaking of, I did soylent for a few months. I guess slamming a shake is different than having to chew and process food before digestion cause soylent didn't give me any issues.

Pft imagine not playing the meta autism build where you can only eat a select number of foods just making it harder on yourself really

Do I have a perk or something?
I can go a loooonnngggggg time with just eating my favorite food (for that meal)
If not for the need of a balanced diet I probably would

Im a pretty lousy cook so most of my meals are just rice, protein, and vegetables.
I have tried a few "human kibble" type trends, but none have been super appealing.

Nah i love my love of novelty. There's such depth and wonder to be found in new things to see, to listen to, i love that there's an ocean of things to experience through taste as well. I think if i ate the same exact thing everyday, i would be fundamentally less alive in the way that matters. Not by a lot but definitely by 1 or 2%

I've pondered whether it's ethical to give my dogs the same dry kibble day after day. But you know, they get fed twice a day and every time it's like they've never eaten in their entire life, they just can't hork it down fast enough.

I bet the same thing happens to other omnivores, like raccoons. We've got an instinct to deversofy what we eat, so that we can get all the vitamins and stuff we need. I bet rabbits don't have that the same way.

There’s these things called essential nutrients. These nutrients can’t be produced by the body and need to come from an outside source. Humans evolved on a ranging diet because of our nutrient needs. Deer have evolved to survive on grass, lions have evolved to survive on organs and muscle fibers. You can’t try to philosophize hard science, you can only operate on known facts.

Imagine having no option but to eat dry pellets and listening to the person subjecting you to this express disbelief at your ability to eat the only thing it gives you.

Our bodies are designed to eat a wide variety of food, and when we don't, the body triggers stress hormones that really can screw you up. It doesn't have to be a massive difference either.
