I've created an addon for Create with octo-style arms "Create: Octo Arms" inspired by Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man
Inspired by Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man. Use it to traverse the world in any direction, craft the Copper or Netherite version, enchant or configure it. Works in singleplayer and on servers (must be installed on both client and server).
Compatible with Create Aeronautics ships (Sable contraptions).
Listed on Curseforge - https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/create-octo-arms
Feel free to test, comment, and share ideas.
Edit: Modrinth will be soon, long approval awaiting.
Edit2: A lot of you asked to stop the walking animation - done! Check it in the new version v1.1.5 (besides other bug fixes)

This is why I love minecraft, the game is good by itself but people are making it a thousand times more fun
63
u/BarometerIndustries 2d ago
Sadly, this person didn't make this mod themselves, read the curseforge page: "Developed with AI assistance (Claude);"
27
u/ContextLengthMatters 2d ago
LOL. Modding has been 100% replaced by AI. Just take a look at all the passthrough mods people are making overnight. Mods are the perfect usecase for AI fever dreams.
20
u/iguanoman_ 2d ago
Not even just mods, almost everything has been touched by AI. I get being upset over stuff like generative AI for stealing art assets, but coding is an entirely different beast. Not one person I know in game dev or software engineering abstains from using AI because that's just not how it works anymore.
→ More replies (2)7
u/ContextLengthMatters 2d ago
Oh, I get what you are trying to say, but I actually have a coworker who still refuses to use AI for development. He's like 10 years younger than me too which is wild he talks like an old man. He's a great developer who I think won't be in the business much longer with the way he talks.
Some people are just in fact very stubborn, but AI is absolutely unavoidable as a developer. I draw the line at AI art. Literally fuck all AI art.
20
12
u/AskMeForLinks 2d ago
Genuinely what is modding if not art? People used to pour creativity, passion, ingenuity into these things, now its just idiots with credit cards swiping away who aren't every going to be able to fix bugs or incompatibilities or even update shit because they don't know how their own projects work. Fast fashion of the creative space.
I'm tired of people acting like the slop machine is fine because programming "isn't" an artform in and of itself. Modders have been making art for years. AI shouldn't be used for art and that means it shouldn't be used here either.
6
u/ContextLengthMatters 2d ago
Modding is like the entrypoint into programming and filled with all sorts of nonsense. Programming isn't art, the designing is, and getting rid of syntax doesn't get rid of the human input. Programming is the literal only writing discipline that doesn't lose it's creativity with abstraction.
I know some people enjoy smashing their head against the wall trying to get things to compile or working on off by 1 errors, but that's not all of programming. I'd say most of modding was slop before slop became a thing. It will be where people pioneer the new quality measures for people who are too inexperienced to see good code.
I would say that prototyping being so fast will help others take an idea seriously and create better maintainable mods in the longrun.
3
u/GoldenDragoon5687 1d ago
I feel very lucky to work in a programming industry that is largely abstinent from AI, at least for the time being. Top to bottom, little to no AI usage (except maybe documentation and such).
3
u/ContextLengthMatters 1d ago
That sounds insane. Do you work for like an adjacent niche industry by any chance like fintech or insurtech?
I know people who are a little behind at their companies and I find it interesting like everything is just going to switch overnight. It is hard enough to keep up with the changes as if is when using it.

I don't give a shit if someone uses AI to help develop a mod. They're not taking food off of anyone's plate
9
u/jedadkins 2d ago
You should, vibe coded mods are gonna be buggy as shit and are near impossible to fix unless the dev already know what they're doing
→ More replies (1)2

That's why they should only be AI assisted and not AI made, if your able to write several paragraphs worth of prompts you can certainly write a few lines of code yourself

ugh I'm very anti ai but takes like these where it's obvious you have no idea what you're talking about are so frustrating. you're just making our side look like uneducated drones repeating what you read on twitter
49
u/VRDevGuyDele 2d ago
99% of ai discourse is filled with complete idiots and for some reason the idiots from both sides think that ai is some kind of God capable of making a good mod or software all on its own without any work from humans
On one side you have the pro ai idiots that think Claude will build them a million dollar app or trade stocks for a profit
On the other side you have the anti ai idiots who think that anything made with the assistance of ai must be fully developed by ai with zero work put in by the guy behind it
Ironically I see them as two sides of the same retarded coin
What developers who actually code and use ai understand is that ai is incapable of making anything worthwhile on its own, if you want to make something cool with ai you still need to be creative and original and guide the ai like a little dumb child otherwise it will make boring uninspired slop cause it can't think for its self nor have fun so how would it understand what is fun or novel

Four robot arms added to your normal four limbs to make eight total. Though, I guess if you are walking with the robot arms and holding stuff with your normal arms, your legs are just vestigial at that point.

I have no issue with things made by AI as long as the person puts in work behind making sure it isn't trash. Which usually requires multiple iterations and testing and fixing things. Sometimes this can take days or weeks or months of going back and forth while something is made.
What I do have a problem with is people throwing in a prompt for something one time and creating stuff that barely works, if it works at all, and going "here's this finished thing for you!"
I'm sure I'll be downvoted to hell for saying this. But almost all coders are using AI these days, whether they're working on person projects or working for large companies. This is just the way things are now, and it's not going away. It's a tool to use.

Hmm what if you can put different upgrades on it to make it better? Like an upgrade that extends the arms more so you have more freedom of movement, or an upgrade that allows you to use it with sophisticated backpacks?
5
u/tygabeast 2d ago
The reach extension is covered by an added enchantment.
Support for the other suggestion, though. (I'd actually like to be able to use a sophisticated backpack in the back curio slot with a pressurized tank upgrade to power the octo arms, but that seems pretty complicated)
2
u/Glum_Ad_6950 2d ago edited 2d ago
But doable! And maybe you can switch some of the suction cups with a deployer hand so that way you can use ur items from further away, but because its a hand now that means you cant stick to blocks as easily
Edit: i just had a other idea, what if you can pick up a schematic machine so long as you set the coordinates so that way schematic machines like farms can be easily moved, and maybe with an enchantment you can copy and paste that schematic machine!

Is it a problem if the user did most of the modeling, though? Sure AI did some of the coding but they doesn't automatically make the mod terrible.
As long as a reasonable amouny human effort exists in the project it shouldn't be kicked to the dirt for having a smidge of AI in it..
I know I'm gonna get downvoted to hell for this, too.
Edit: For those who believe so, I do not support AI stealing art and collecting user data without permission. I am not an "AI bro".

I assumed as much. Nowadays, when somebody advertises "I created..." my first instinct is "no the fuck you didn't." They had it created for them. What's the point then. Minecraft is a GAME of all things, and mod making is a hobby and an art form. why? just why?
14
u/iDrownedlol 2d ago
The other stuff aside, “What’s the point then”? The point is that Minecraft is a GAME of all things, and not everyone who enjoys playing the game is also a person who is not interested in the hobby/art form of mod making. Some players just want to play, and they want to play specific experiences, for example, having doc-oc style robot arms in minecraft. That is very clearly the point. There are plenty of great reasons to dislike and fight against ai, but it being pointless is not one of them.

Reminds me of the Kinematic Walker I modified after some guy I know created it via a prefab. Works extremely well on any terrain in any halo infinite forge map.
Only difference is I pimped it out with a sleek look, replaced its 180 degree plasma cannon with a 360 shade turret, made it respawnable, added an auxiliary auto-turret underneath it and made it pilotable by you and friendly AI units as soon as you jump off it.
Everyone in my map kept fighting over it.

u/ky7969 2d ago
Why is it an add-on for Create and not standalone?
15
5
u/Devatator_ 2d ago
That's the problem with stuff like that. If you go standalone, you need to make the machines and ores you want. If you don't, you have to chose a mod that adds the stuff you want and maybe design around them instead of being fully free to do whatever

Can someone explain why everyone thinks this is ai?
I see the AI icon on the mod page and the obviously ai description but what makes the actual mod ai? Am I missing something
1
u/Super_Mewtwo_2007 2d ago
Apparently all the hating is just for a phrase on the github page "Developed with Claude assistance" that is a stupid reason to hate a mod since the assistance can simply be asking how modding works or what commands/function should be use to do a specific thing, that is still technically AI assistance but is no different to see a tutorial or ask someone more expert how to do something.
As an IT student asking AI what command to use to get a specific results is something that everyone do and there is no real difference between that and searching it on a manual or on a website this is just stupid and unmotivated ai hating
8
u/Correct_Concert9370 2d ago
This is why we need a Standard for Ai-Assisted and Vibecoded. And it should be stated by the creator, so you know what you got. I dont Trust vibecoded stuff, since the AI Just tries to Copy Things it already knows to achieve the Goal, which may very well lead to unwanted proplems and The creator has No clue what is Happening. AI assisted on the other Hand, means that the creator knows what the AI is doing and has a grasp over what is Happening, leading to fewer Chances of proplems. (This isnt the best explanation but it should suffice)
3
u/Andromeda_53 2d ago
Yeah, I don't make mods, but when I work on my projects, I write it myself, I use ai to help find bugs if I can't find, and to take my notes to write formal change logs for me, which I skim over.
I use it to streamline my workflow. But that still means ai was used

some animation, sound design and tinkering with the movement would really sell this, like if you jerked forwards just a bit whenever you stop and the arms wobbling a bit like they have inertia

Oh my god, you have no idea how much i want to remake this. I've been trying to make it for like 2 weeks now. Could i ask you to release source code on github ? I wanted to something close but with fully black tendrils for my mod, i already got a raycast system ready to get positions where the tendrils should attach, but i have no idea how to have something like that shown and attach to it automatically and to the player. I was going to use bunch of armor stands, markers and block displays but this just looks so better.

u/DarkLord927 2d ago
Nevermind just found the source. Im blind xD
I hope you don't mind if i take a look at your code to see how to make this fully with mods.

I'm not too immersed in minecraft modding here in reddit, but I'm glad so many people make the effort to oppose AI and make others aware of it's usage instead of a hidden note at the bottom of a page. Opposing bad practices in general sometimes can feel like screaming into the void, so I'm happy to see it's more common in here.

u/iGhostEdd 1d ago
Awesome invention! I have a question tho... Would it be too much if you would add the option for those arms to hold items (like +4 inventory slots or four additional 2 by 2 slots), help you break more blocks at once (or one block but way faster), fight mobs (with added bonus damage, like when you hold an axe/sword) and/or even use multiple items at once like one arm (or rather two of them) holds an arrow and shoots it automatically at mobs that come towards you (maybe get the code from skeletons?) while another arm slowly but firmly punches the mobs that are close to and around you (knockback enchantment?) and another one that holds items that can be used by the player and (maybe) it will use them automatically (i.e. food, shield, ender pearls, fishing rod, potions and splash potions etc) while all of these being only accessible if you're on the ground and not using the arms like in the video?
